Opis:
In the history of the German language of the period between 750–1050, the term “Old High German dialects” is used to characterize the Franconian, Bavarian and Alemannic languages, in which the records from this period are written. The author of the article analyses the meaning of the term in question and explains why the languages of those records have been called “dialects” (despite the fact that the common language, whose dialects they might have been, did not exist at that time yet), and on what grounds they have been called “German” dialects (though the German nationality did not exist at that time either).

The purpose of this article is to present grammatical achievements of Franciszek Betlejczyk, a nineteenth century linguistic publicist, representing the normative approach. Betlejczyk’s scientific achievements have been presented in the context of accomplishments of Onufry Kopczyński and Jan Niecisław Baudouin de Courtenay, whose dissertation titled “O drěvnepol’skom jazyke do XIV-go stolětija” gave rise to scholarly Polish linguistics. This article discusses Betlejczyk’s most important works, which contain numerous, accurate assessments of the Polish language of the time.

The paper describes a very significant role of Bible translation in the development of the Slavic national languages. The author focuses on the Polish language which in its literary form was shaped in the Middle Ages but its full functional efficiency was reached in the 16th century. Among the medieval relics, the translation of psalms and other Bible passages played a great cultural role. However, the complete Polish translations of the Holy Bible appeared in the 16th century (Biblia Budnego, Leopolity, Wujka). Those renditions enriched the Polish language with a number of new words. Moreover, they provoked a scientific reflection on the Slavic languages. As a result, the author proposes a thesis asserting that the act of Bible philological translations contributed to further linguistic research.

The aim of this article is manifold: first, to present a fragment of a work little or nothing known in the Hispanic world: Waaren-Lexicon in zwölf Sprachen by Philipp Andreas Nemnich, published in Hamburg in 1797. Then, to analyze a lexical group documented there (names of precious and semiprecious stones) in order to deepen knowledge of the Spanish lexicon of the time. Finally, to encourage all interested in the history of Spanish lexicon to discover the sources hitherto investigated for being them a very promising source of new linguistic findings.

Opis:
The article begins with the presentation of the previous syntheses of the history of the Polish language. Next, the foundations of the description have been presented. According to the author they should comprise, among others, the processes of linguistic differentiation, occurring at the level of the: a) system, b) style as well as the process of linguistic integration leading to the creation of a general language. In the historical and linguistic description, the author distinguished 3 levels: a) political, social and cultural background, b) communicative aspects, c) linguistic aspects. While discussing the problem of linguistic communication, the author draws readers’ attention to three communicative breakthroughs in the history of the Polish language: a) in the first half of the 16th c., b) after World War II, c) at the turn of the 20th century. The article is concluded with a proposal of periodization of the history of the Polish language. The author has divided the history of the Polish language—comprising more than ten centuries—into two great epochs: a) until the beginning of the 16th century, b) from the 16th century until the modern times. They have been divided into subperiods on the basis of varied criteria: historical, linguistic and communicative.

The aim of the paper is to present the modern Prekmurian language that is nowadays used in Porabje. Porabje, located in Hungary, is a part of the bigger historical region named Prekmurje. While the Prekmurje was divided between Jugoslavia and Hungary after the first world war, one could see that the role of the Prekmurian language in Porabje was marginalized. Now it is used only in a few language areas. The consideration leads to some terminological conclusions.

Names of attributes of Gods: one, sole in Polish translations of Bibles and the QuranThe present article spans many different areas of linguistics (the history of Polish, theolinguistics, Islamic linguistics, kitabistics, religious language) and translation studies. The purpose of the article is a comprehensive presentation of how Arabic lexis and phraseology were rendered in Slavonic languages (especially in the Polish dialects of the northern borderland of Poland, and also in Belorussian dialects); and how Arabic and Turkish forms were transposed into grammatical and lexical system of Polish and Belorussian. The article analyses the transpositions of the Arabic names for God into Slavonic languages in the writings of Tatars in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and in Polish printed translations of Koran, in comparison with the names of God that appear in the Polish translations of the Bible.

Unclear meanings of selected verbs from the first half of 19th century (based on Podróż bez celu by Fryderyk Skarbek) The aim of the article is to initiate the lexical research of Polish novels from 1800–1830. It is pursued by analyzing the meanings of verbs on the basis of Podróż bez celu (1824–1825) by Fryderyk Skarbek. In the conducted research, both the methods of computer linguistics and the classical philological method were used, which allowed for the necessary immersion into contexts and connotations. Verbs with meanings not noted in modern dictionaries of the Polish language were subjected to a detailed analysis. From the perspective of the general contemporary language, these are lexical, semantic and morphological archaisms. Half of them disappeared completely, in the remaining ones there were semantic shifts: extensions, narrowing, changes in designation, the analysis of which proves a significant tendency of the nineteenth-century resource to differentiate and expand.

Opis:
The article contributes to the discussion on the interpretation of processes taking place in the contemporary Polish language from two perspectives: diachronic and synchronic (ahistorical, to be precise). The author draws attention to the problem of not accounting for the achievements of diachronic linguistics, which is visible in the studies devoted to the analysis of the language used by the contemporary Poles. This leads to a situation in which the same research questions are not infrequently examined and interpreted in completely different ways in synchronic studies and those dealing with the history of language. Sometimes the differences are so vast that coherent scientific discourse becomes disabled. Enriching the investigation of the processes occurring in the contemporary Polish language with conclusions drawn from analysing historical sources is thus an important claim. Considering the diachronic perspective could be particularly beneficial for discussing the issue of the norm. Since a number of problems with language correctness result from tendencies and processes which have been happening in language for centuries, only becoming acutely aware of them can bring a change in understanding codification and the linguistic norm.

Jan Kochanowski
Opis:
In the Middle Ages, words from the nest ‘pogarda’ (contempt) are characterised by semantic and axiological diversity. They can be found in religious texts in requests addressed to God for not rejecting a man or in negative evaluations of the human disregard for God’s commands and rules. With respect to interpersonal relations, they mean that one person disregards another one, rejects or refuses to help him or her. The latter might have had legal consequences if the person was obliged to provide such help. In Jan Kochanowski’s works, the meanings of such words do not change signifi cantly; fi rst of all, they are specifi ed in their humane dimension in the human world and the stylistic use of their religious markedness is also noticeable. A further semantic evolution goes in the direction of “sharpening” the negative sense of the lexemes, which involves, among others, a change of ethics in the democratic society, where every human being is entitled to equal respect.
