    Reintroduction of local government in 1990 was one of the main pillars of the post-socialist transformation in Poland. Municipalities assumed several tasks previously performed by the central administration and its territorial agencies. This paper presents the results of mass surveys conducted among Polish municipalities and compares the findings with similar surveys conducted almost 20 years earlier. The results prove that the learning process among representatives of local governments in Poland is regionally differentiated, and that the differences can be attributed to the historical trajectories of particular macro-regions of Poland.

    Historical regions remain the most common basis for the formation or promotion of regional identities in Europe. However, regions and regional identities are in the process of constant formation and can change significantly in line with new conditions. In this paper we focused on the changes of the spatial spread of identities with historical regions in Ukraine in comparison to the initial boundaries of those. The results show that identities with historical regions are markedly adapting to modern administrative boundaries. At the same time, the symbolic value of historical regions constitutes an essential element of identity building in contemporary administrative regions.

    Georgia can be characterised by its turbulent history, centuries-old traditions, and a great ethnic diversity. This makes it necessary to include historical determinants, in addition to geopolitical and economic factors, when making a regional analysis of its territory and contemporary governance issues. Five stages of the development of the present territorial division of Georgia are distinguished. They have been identified by means of an analysis of key events (critical junctures) of significance in the formation of its historical regions. Additionally, their influence at each of the three levels of the current territorial division of independent Georgia is discussed, in particular in the context of territorial governance.

    The study contains the reflection on the usefulness of the notion East-Central Europe as a historical region in the research on confessional relations in the early modern era. It begins with the description of the discussion on regionalization of European history, with particular emphasis on the frequently ideologized division into East and West. Next, the author recalls the genesis of the notion of East-Central Europe as a historical region, which was introduced after the Second World War by Oskar Halecki, and the popularization of this notion in the second half of the twentieth century. In the author’s opinion, the most important criterion in the evaluation of usefulness of this construct should be its research functionality checked not in syntheses or reviews, but in detailed research into specific problems, including comparative research.

    The work is a continuation of (Wendt 2004) attempts to present changes in the administrative division of the Romanian lands. Efforts were made to take into account and indicate the influence of geographical conditions, especially orographic and the river system, shaping of boundaries/natural barriers both within the country and outside its borders-starting from the geographical regionalization through arrangement of the historical regions of the Romanian territories and showing the first rise in the country's administrative boundaries. Also the role of geopolitical factors, among which the development of the borders of Romania and its historical regions and the greatest administrative impact, were three wars in the Balkans in the years 1913–1945 and the change of the Bessarabia, and Transylvania territory inhabited by the Hungarian population. It also presented proposals for changes in the contemporary administrative divisions and the creation of new regions. On the one hand, they take into account the EU's legal standards, placed Romania in the accession process and the EU membership. On the other hand, proposals for new administrative divisions include regional traditions and historical factors shaping the Romanian regions
    Praca stanowi kontynuację (Wendt 2003, 2004, Wendt, Ilieş 2004) podjętej dziesięć lat temu próby przedstawienia geograficznych i geopolitycznych czynników zmian w po-działach administracyjnych ziem rumuńskich. Starano się uwzględnić i wskazać na wpływ uwarunkowań geograficznych, zwłaszcza orograficznych i sieci rzecznej na kształtowanie się granic/barier naturalnych zarówno wewnątrz kraju, jak i na jego zewnętrznych granicach. Wychodząc od regionalizacji fizycznogeograficznej poprzez układ historycznych regionów na ziemiach rumuńskich, pokazano powstanie pierwszych granic administracyjnych w kraju. Wskazano także na rolę czynników geopolitycznych, wśród których na kształtowanie się granic Rumunii, jej regionów historycznych i administracyjnych największy wpływ miały trzy wojny toczone na Bałkanach w latach 1913–1945 oraz zmiany przynależności Besarabii, a także terytorium Siedmiogrodu zamieszkanego przez ludność węgierską. Przedstawiono także współczesne propozycje zmian podziałów administracyjnych i tworzenia nowych regionów. Z jednej strony uwzględniają one unijne normy prawne, stawiane Rumunii w procesie akcesji i po uzyskaniu członkostwa UE. Z drugiej strony propozycje nowych podziałów administracyjnych uwzględniają tradycje regionalne i historyczne uwarunkowania kształtowania się regionów rumuńskich.

    Artykuł prezentuje regionalizację krajobrazów historyczno-kulturowych współczesnej Polski. Zaproponowany podział odnosi się do terytorialnego zróżnicowania materialnych przejawów kultury. Uwzględnia czas zasiedlenia, liczbę nawarstwień kulturowych, przebieg historycznych granic politycznych, zróżnicowanie współczesnej sieci osadniczej, strukturę krajobrazu. Skalą opracowania jest mapa 1:1000000, lub 1:1500000. Zaprezentowane zostały podstawy teoretyczne, sprecyzowano kryteria podziału dla każdego szczebla regionalizacji współczesnych krajobrazów historyczno-kulturowych. Regionalizacja przeprowadzona została metodą „od góry”, obejmuje środkowe stopnie hierarchicznego podziału. Postawiono tezę, że Polska nie stanowi obszaru granicznego kręgów cywilizacyjnych.
    The article presents the regionalisation of the historical-cultural landscapes of contemporary Poland. The spatial division proposed in the article refers to the territorial differentiation of the material expressions of culture. It accounts for the time of settling, the number of cultural layers, the course of the historical political boundaries, the differentiation of the contemporary settlement network, and the structure of landscape. The scale of analysis is provided by the map of 1:1 000 000 or of 1:1 500 000. The theoretical foundations are presented, and the criteria of division are made concrete for each level of regionalisation of the contemporary historical-cultural landscapes. The regionalisation was performed with the top-down method, and it encompasses the middle degrees of the hierarchical structure. The proposition is forwarded that Poland does not constitute the border area in the broad divisions of civilisations.

    Przedmiotem artykułu są dwojakie konsekwencje przystąpienia Polski w 2009 roku do układu z Schengen. Jako pierwsze następstwo, otwartej przestrzeni znoszącej blokady graniczne, uznano w nim nieuchronność zmian infrastrukturalnych na pograniczach państw sąsiedzkich powiązanych tym układem. Szczegółowego ich przeglądu dokonano na przykładzie pogranicza polsko-niemieckiego. Drugim w kolejności logicznym następstwem tej integracji staje się scalanie regionów historycznych jakie na pograniczach tych istniały, zanim rywalizujące o nie państwa podzieliły je swymi granicami. Wymaga to zupełnie nowego podejścia do tworzenia euroregionów. Ex definitione powinny być nimi tylko regiony historyczne porozrywane granicami państwowymi. Podziały administracyjne, właściwe dla Europy Państw, zostaną wówczas docelowo zastąpione przez regiony historyczne Europy Ojczyzn.
    The subject of the paper are twofold consequences of the Poland access to the Schengen Treaty in 2009. The first result of opening the borders are inevitable in the infrastructure of the areas adjacent to the borders in the treaty countries. They are discussed using the example of the Polish-German border. The second consequence is the consolidation of historical regions which exist before being divided by the state borders. This calls for a completely new approach to creating Euroregions. They should be, ex definition, historical regions, divided now by political state frontiers. The administrative units, typical in the Europe of National States should be replaced by the historical regions of the Europe of Homelands.

    The article presents and discusses the historiographical concept of North Eastern Europe which has been coined by the German historian Klaus Zernack (1931–2017). Firstly, the article looks into the origins of the term, which date back to the nineteenth century, and stresses the significance of the research on the multicultural region of Old Livonia conducted by the Estonian-German historian Paul Johansen. His findings turned out to be crucial for shaping Zernack’s understanding of the concept of North Eastern Europe, which is discussed in the second part of the text. Zernack first referred to the term in his research on early modern Swedish-Russian diplomatic relations, but in various articles published subsequently he expanded his understanding of North Eastern Europe to comprise the multicultural history and political entanglements of the whole Baltic Sea region. The third part of the article discusses the impact of Zernack’s notion. In contrast with the influence he had on shaping the historiographical concept of East Central Europe within German scholarship, North Eastern Europe as a historical region has not gained similar traction among scholars. This may be explained by three factors. Firstly, the Baltic Sea region has once more become a more convincing geographical term, also in international scholarly discussion, especially when compared to Zernack’s deliberately artificial term. Secondly, the notion of Norden, in particular since the 1990s, has expanded to incorporate the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and thus started, at least partly, to compete with North Eastern Europe. Thirdly, the concept of North Eastern Europe has been ambiguous by a reference to, on the one hand, only the eastern part of the Baltic Sea region and, on the other hand, to this whole region. Thus, North Eastern Europe proves to be an epistemologically stimulating notion that, however, is more difficult to handle outside scholarly debates.

    The article defines concepts related to mining tourism and the reasons why some destinations are chosen as the sites of hundreds of thousands of visitors per year, while others are only visited by “regional fans” of mining history. The authors attempt to ask questions, which will be clarified by formulating a better definition and understanding of mining tourism. Issues discussed include marketing and management of mining tourism, as well as tourists’ preferences. The article focuses on definitions of different forms of tourism, to ultimately argue that mining tourism is a separate type of tourism. A substantial part of the article is devoted to historical personalities, whose activities and interests in historic mining regions of present-day Slovakia can be considered as the beginnings of mining tourism.
    W artykule zdefiniowano pojęcia związane z turystyką górniczą i opisano powody popularności niektórych obiektów górniczych, przyciągających setki tysięcy turystów rocznie, w sytuacji gdy inne budzą zainteresowanie jedynie lokalnych miłośników historii górnictwa. Autorzy zadają pytania i próbują znaleźć odpowiedzi, proponując nowe, lepsze definicje pojęć i nowe rozumienie zjawiska nazywanego turystyką górniczą. Omawiane są problemy marketingu i zarządzania w turystyce górniczej. Autorzy przedstawiają też definicje różnych form turystyki i dochodzą do wniosku, że turystyka górnicza stanowi osobną gałąź przemysłu turystycznego. Duża część artykułu poświęcona jest postaciom historycznym, których działalność i zainteresowanie historycznymi okręgami górniczymi na terenie dzisiejszej Słowacji moga być traktowane jako początek turystyki górniczej.

    Artykuł porusza zagadnienia związane ze znaczeniem nostalgii we współczesnej turystyce. Jako przykłady zaprezentowano zjawiska nostalgicznej turystyki sportowej oraz turystyki kulinarnej związanej z wild food foraging. W pracy poruszono też kwestię historycznych eventów sportowych i ich znaczenia dla budowania wizerunku miast i regionów turystycznych. Dziedzictwo sportowe w postaci historycznych eventów sportowych zapewnia alternatywę dla zhomogenizowanych, komercyjnych i bardzo drogich imprez sportowych, których organizatorzy przywiązują niewielką wagę do miejsca rozgrywania zawodów. Historyczne eventy sportowe dają szansę na zrównoważony rozwój turystyki. W pracy uzasadniono potrzebę troski o dziedzictwo kulturowe związane ze sportem w regionach turystycznych.
    In the article, the authors show the significance of nostalgia in modern tourism. They also describe the problem of historical sports events and their role in the development of the image of cities and tourist regions. It turns out that nostalgia is a more and more popular trend in modern tourism. Many tourists visit places related with historical events or special occasions. The situation of territorial marketing is also presented before, during, and after the sports events. The host cities must prepare all infrastructure for the show. Therefore, many smaller and greater businesses expand and try to adjust their offer for the tourists. The article includes many examples of nostalgia in modern tourism and historical sports events so that the reader can perceive the whole complexity of the issue.
