    In this paper authors presents the reconstruction of floods which occurred between 1945 – 1972 in the Wadowice area. The Reconstruction is based on press articles deriving from polish daily newspaper “Dziennik Polski” witch have been launched after II World War. Historical press issues are very succulent and copious source of geographical information. Even though the reconstruction of flood events based on newspaper data might be sketchy and also misleading, it gives the exceptional view on episodes from the past. Newspaper articles comprehend a lot of tragic stories of emergency services, troops, and society struggling with damaging power of streams, rivers, and landslides. It is a highly emotional type of narration entirely different from scientific papers. The newspapers were publishing also a plenty of additional information e. g. names of fatalities or the courses of relief efforts including rescue missions and mercy dashes. This sort of data are missing in other publication regarding to flood events. Accordingly, historical regional press may fortify our knowledge about flood events with new facts and facilitates comparisons between former and present-day floods. Moreover, in previous century printed press was a one of the main propaganda instrument, which was especially present and useful during natural disasters. For that reason historical newspaper articles are object of study for sociologists and historians.

    Popular science magazines published in Poland between 1758 and 1939 are an important resource for all kinds of research including interdisciplinary analysis as well testing new methodological approaches. They provide insights into the changing understanding of science and its social functions, the status of the scientist, models of popularization of science, the channels and forms of communications, techniques of construction of the popular science text enhanced with graphics and illustrations.

    Positioned within the discourse-historical approach (DHA) to discourse analysis, this paper examines the function of discursive constructions of the welfare state as a concept in asserting political identities in a corpus of British newspaper articles. It finds the boundaries of the concept are an important factor in the construction of such identities and proposes that delineation of concept boundaries be considered among the discursive strategies analysed in DHA.

    W drugiej połowie XIX wieku polskie czasopisma ilustrowane publikowały między innymi reprodukcje obrazów historycznych. Priorytetem dla wydawców były dzieje narodowe. Malarze podejmowali zarówno tematy wzniosłe, syntetyzujące w jednej scenie procesy historyczne, jak również sięgali po anegdoty, odsłaniając odbiorcom prywatne życie bohaterów z przeszłości. Zygmunt August i Barbara Radziwiłłówna, Święty Kazimierz Jagiellończyk czy królowa Jadwiga to postacie najczęściej pojawiające się na płótnach dziewiętnastowiecznych polskich malarzy, a co za tym idzie – na łamach tygodników. Pisma ilustrowane ukazywały się w Warszawie, ale ich dystrybucja opierała się na prenumeracie na terenie dawnych ziem Rzeczypospolitej. Pozwalało to na kontakt z malarstwem także osobom mieszkającym poza miastami, gdzie odbywały się wystawy sztuki. W ten sposób tworzyła się wspólna dla wykształconych warstw społecznych narracja historyczna, odwołująca się do kanonu dawnych bohaterów.
    In the second half of the 19th century Polish illustrated magazines published – among others – reproductions of historical paintings. For the editors, the scenes from the Polish history were the most important. Artists created monumental works which fuzed the effect of complex historical processes into one picture, but also searched for anecdotes from the private life of past characters. Sigismund II Augustus and Barbara Radziwiłł, Saint Casimir Jagiellon or Jadwiga of Poland were the figures who were portrayed most often by Polish painters and, consequently, popularized by illustrated press. The magazines were published in Warsaw, but they had subscribers in every part of the former country of Poland. This enabled the readers who lived outside big cities to have contact with the art. It was a way to create a historical narrative that would be shared by every member of educated social classes.

    The article deals with the issue of the informative value of Galician law journals in research on the history of notaries public in the years 1871–1914. The text presents the analysis of such titles as „Kwartalnik Stowarzyszenia Kandydatów Notarialnych w Krakowie”, „Prawnik”, „Przegląd Sądowy i Administracyjny”, „Urzędnik w Połączeniu z Prawnikiem” [“Quarterly of the Association of Notary Candidates in Krakow”, “Lawyer”, “Judicial and Administrative Review”, “The clerk combined with the lawyer”]. A large part of their content was devoted to texts on the notary public’s services. The continuity, cyclicality and quality of published materials are noteworthy, as they provide opportunities for research on the professional group of notaries, especially with the use of an ego-documentary perspective.
    Artykuł podejmuje zagadnieniem wartości informacyjnej galicyjskich czasopism prawniczych w badaniach nad dziejami notariatu w latach 1871-1914. W tekście zajęto się analizą takich tytułów jak „Kwartalnik Stowarzyszenia Kandydatów Notarialnych w Krakowie”, „Prawnik”, „Przegląd Sądowy i Administracyjny”, „Urzędnik w Połączeniu z Prawnikiem”. Sporą część ich zawartości zajmowały teksty dotyczące notariatu. Na uwagę zasługuje ciągłość, cykliczność oraz jakość publikowanych materiałów, które stwarzają możliwości badań nad grupą zawodową notariuszy zwłaszcza z zastosowaniem perspektywy egodokumentalnej.

    Celem artykułu jest nie tylko informacja o odnotowaniu lub nie przez krakowskie periodyki przebiegu uroczystości rocznicowych w 1930 roku lub opublikowaniu artykułu okolicznościowego, ale szukanie odpowiedzi na zasadnicze pytania: czy tematyka powstania listopadowego i obchodów rocznicowych z nim związanych służyła aktualnej polityce i sprowadzona została do tych właśnie wymiarów, czy też tekstowi dziennikarskiemu nadano jeszcze inną funkcję? Czy i w jakim stopniu prasa krakowska spełniała w tym względzie rolę popularyzatora w zakresie społecznej edukacji historycznej?
    The article seeks to establish whether the November Rising was — or was not — duly acknowledged in the Centenary Year 1930 in the Cracow press. But the point is not merely to take note of the coverage of the anniversary celebrations and the commemorative articles, but rather to fi nd out if these texts were infused with current political concerns. We ask further to what extent the latter came to dominate the ostensible historical theme and what other functions may have been served by the Centenary journalism of 1930. Of course, the article also considers the manner in which the Cracow press took up the role of a popular historical educator.

    In dem Beitrag werden ausgewählte Fremdwörter in historischen Zitaten aus Wirtschaftsartikeln der Jahre 1885–1886 und 1995–1996 präsentiert und analysiert, um zu zeigen, wie sich die Wirtschaftssprache in einer Zeitspanne von 100 Jahren verändert hat. Das ausgehende 19. Jh. und das ausgehende 20. Jh. wurden gewählt, da es in dieser Zeitspanne großen technischen Fortschritt gab, der einen Ausbau und Wandel des Wortschatzes zur Folge hatte. In der Untersuchung soll zum Ausdruck kommen, wie sich die Wirtschaftskommunikation insbesondere auf dem Gebiet des Handels und der Industrie entwickelt hat, welche Wörter von den Umwälzungen unberührt geblieben sind und welche aus dem Gebrauch kamen. Das Augenmerk ist hier auf häufig auftretende Fremdwörter sowie Ausdrücke mit Fremdwörtern gerichtet; das Interesse gilt auch hybriden Zusammensetzungen aus einem nativen und einem nicht nativen Wort. Der Beitrag basiert auf einer vorgenommenen längeren Analyse des Wirtschaftswortschatzes aus dem ausgehenden 19. und 20. Jh., der Wirtschaftsbereiche wie Handel, Industrie, Arbeitsmarkt und Finanzen umfasst. Die Wortschatzbeispiele werden ausschließlich aus der Wirtschaftspresse geschöpft. Diese Untersuchungen wollen sich auch in Beiträge einreihen, die den Fachsprachen gewidmet sind.
    In this paper, selected foreign words are presented and analysed in historical quotations from business articles from 1885-1886 (19th century) and 1995-1996 (20th century) to show how business language has changed over a period of 100 years. The end of the 19th century and the end of the 20th century were thus chosen because there has been a great technical progress during this period, which resulted in an expansion and change of vocabulary. The study aims to show how business communication had developed, especially in the field of trade and industry, which words remained unaffected by the upheavals, and which came out of use. The focus here is on frequently occurring foreign words as well as expressions with foreign words; interest is also directed at hybrid compounds of both native and a non-native words. The article is part of a longer analysis of economic vocabulary from the 19th and 20th centuries, covering economic areas such as trade, industry, the labour market.     Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań dotyczących wymiaru przestrzennego wybranych aspektów życia społeczno-gospodarczego wsi w okolicach Szadku w drugiej połowie XIX w. i na początku XX w. Analizę przeprowadzono na podstawie kwerendy artykułów i notatek zamieszczonych na łamach dwóch czasopism prowincjonalnych wydawanych w badanym okresie: „Kaliszanin” i „Gazeta Kaliska”. Okazało się, że zawierają one wiele wartościowych danych, często nieuchwytnych w świetle innych typów źródeł historycznych. Badania pozwoliły ukazać główne kierunki przeobrażeń oraz różnorodność problemów odnoszących się do kwestii społeczno-kulturowych, działalności gospodarczo-agrarnej oraz stosunków własnościowych na analizowanym obszarze, a pośrednio możliwe było nakreślenie sytuacji panującej na obszarach wiejskich w zaborze rosyjskim w okresie pouwłaszczeniowym.
    The article presents the results of research on the spatial dimension of selected aspects of socio-economic life in the countryside around Szadek in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis was carried out on the basis of a query of articles and notes from two provincial magazines published in the analyzed period: “Kaliszanin” and “Gazeta Kaliska”. It turned out that they contain a lot of valuable data, often unavailable in other types of historical sources. The research allowed to show the main directions of transformations and the variety of problems relating to socio-cultural issues, economic and agrarian activity and ownership relations in the analyzed area, and indirectly gave an opportunity to present the situation in rural areas in the Russian partition in the period after the enfranchisement of peasants.

    Artykuł przybliża rolę kieleckiego „Magazynu” „Słowa Ludu” w popularyzacji dziejów narodowych, w ostatnim roku obchodów Tysiąclecia Państwa Polskiego (1966 r.). Dzielący los całej ówczesnej prasy polskiej „Magazyn” miał wówczas wykazać szczególną ofensywność w polemice z przeżywającym Millennium Chrztu Polski Kościołem katolickim, promując świecką wizję historii narodowej. Szczegółowa analiza wszystkich numerów „Magazynu” z 1966 r. wykazała jednak, że poza ideologiczno-propagandowym oddziaływaniem tygodnik ten spełnił również pozytywną rolę. Aktywnie włączył się w promocję historii regionalnej, pogłębiając tym samym świadomość historyczną mieszkańców Kielc i okolic
    This article examines the role of the ‘Magazyn’ supplement of the Kielce daily Słowo Ludu in popularizing Polish history in the last year of the celebrations of Poland’s Millennium (1966). Like the rest of the Polish press the Magazyn was expected to take part in the ideological offensive against the Catholic Church’s idea of the Millennium. Although the Magazyn did adopt the outlines of the secular narrative sanctioned by the authorities, it also managed to bring in a lot of material dealing with the history of the region. In this way it did a good job of raising the historical awareness of the residents of Kielce and its environs
