    The main topic of the article is the role of public television, the NHK (Nippon hōsō kyōkai, Japan Broadcasting Corporation), takes in shaping the collective memory in contemporary Japan. The NHK, as a public institution, modelled on the British BBC, conducts a so-called “public mission”, meaning their active and creative participation in shaping social and civil attitudes as well as personality models amongst the Japanese. One of the ways in which the NHK carries out its mission is taiga dorama (“Big River Drama”), the NHK’s flagship productions released yearly since 1963. The creators of these year-long TV series design great national epics recounting historic events and portraying famous historical figures. “Big River Dramas” do not only retell historical events, but also rekindle the interest of the Japanese in their own history and culture. As the carriers of collective memory, they contribute to developing its three elements: cognitive (propagating historical knowledge amongst the society), emotional (creating certain attitudes towards history) and behavioural (developing national tourism).

    The paper is an attempt to reconstruct the content of the drama Dzieci nie chcą żyć (Children Don’t Want to Live) by Marcelina Grabowska as well as its staging and reception. Using the methodology from the field of philosophy of history (Benjamin), theory of performance (Rebecca Schneider) and anthropology of memory (Michel-Rolph Trouillot), the authoress analyses the collected archival material. She thus problematizes the notion of a silent archive and an archival gap. The archives concerning probably the first and only staging of Grabowska’s play (May 1938) and the sociopolitical reality turn out to be the subject of reflection upon the materiality of history and recurrence of time. The crisis of psychological support for children and adolescents of the 1930s comes into dialogue with the (re)current appearance of this issue that happened during the pandemic. The paper contributes to the feminist archive production as a consciously political and architectural gesture that supports non-hegemonic narratives of the history of Polish theatre.

    Gałązka rozmarynu [Rosemary Twig] is a popular art. The article attempts to identify the distinctive features of this type of writing with the aim of positioning it against an earlier literary tradition. In the drama two trends are shown: on the one hand – building a legend of Brigadier Piłsudski and legionary community; on the other – depriving people of heroic qualities: portraying a biological perspective of war participants.
    Gałązka rozmarynu jest sztuką popularną. W artykule podjęto próbę określenia cech dystynktywnych tego typu pisarstwa, usytuowania go względem tradycji literackiej. W dramacie zaznaczają się dwie tendencje: z jednej strony budowanie legendy Brygadiera Piłsudskiego i legionowej społeczności, z drugiej – deheroizacja, ukazywanie biologicznej perspektywy uczestników wojny.

    Worldwide interest in Korean popular culture, especially television series produced in Seoul, has continued to grow since it first came to the attention of international audiences during the 1990s. This is due, among other things, to the numerous costume productions that not only provide entertainment but also popularise the history of the Korean Peninsula, which affords local politicians a specific tool for conducting modern historical policy. Meanwhile, despite the growing popularity of K-drama, Poland still lacks the scientific basis that would allow the ancient history of Korea to be studied. To fill this gap, the author of this article decided to present key issues related to the Three Kingdoms Period (313–668) and the political, social, economic and cultural functioning of the Korean state of Silla. Since the successes of this small country were determined by a combination of factors, including: the nongjajeongbon policy aimed at the welfare of the village and its inhabitants, the hwabaek council with its controlling and mediating function, the golpum bone-rank system that ensured social stability, as well as (shown by the producers of the television series Hwarang from 2016) the chivalrous ethos of members of the elite Hwarang Corps, which remains one of the most important national symbols of Korea to this day.

    Focusing on a 24-episode TV drama series Borderline on Fire, the presented text offers an analysis of the long-lasting discussion of both the series and the Second Republic of Poland with which the series is bound up. The main goal I set myself in writing the article was to show the significance of the inter-war era – which is inseparably associated with the person of Józef Piłsudski and which has been the subject of much mythologization – in public discourse. The article supports the conclusion that the inter-war period still attracts much interest, especially among history-lovers, and that the series dealt with in it can be considered to be one of the factors to which the epoch owes this interest.
    Prezentowany tekst, którego kanwą jest dwudziestocztero odcinkowy serial historyczny pt. ‘Pogranicze w ogniu’ to analiza dyskusji, jaka do dnia dzisiejszego toczy się na temat tego serialu, ale i obrazu Drugiej Rzeczpospolitej. Naczelną przesłanką było pokazanie miejsca i znaczenia w dyskursie publicznym dwudziestolecia międzywojennego – epoki, która nieodłącznie kojarzy się z Józefem Piłsudskim, a która współcześnie uległa znacznej mitologizacji. Wynikiem tych rozważań jest konstatacja, że, przynajmniej dla entuzjastów, historia międzywojnia nadal cieszy się zainteresowaniem, a jednym z elementów je podtrzymującym był, i jest, analizowany serial.
