    The question about the benefits of historical education is serious in the Polish cultural space. The most prominent Poles spoke about this issue. Marshal Józef Piłsudski, for example, said: "Who does not respect and does not value his past is not worthy of respect in the present or right for the future." The Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz assured that: "Whoever talks about history is always safe." Pope John Paul II said this in a more emphatic manner, namely: "A nation that does not know its past dies and does not build the future." Our great countrymen were right. It's history that makes us Poles. Thanks to it, we have our own state, laws, symbols, language, culture, religion and national imaginarium. Thanks to historical education, we know the price and the rank of these values. We can talk about them, even telling alternative stories. We can feel pride, responsibility, admiration, assertiveness, aversion and hate. Historiography meets our integration, psychological, political, cultural, educational, social, artistic, folk, compensation and personal needs. It can be either a "big national flag" or a "quiet haven for hobbyists". This is what the above article is about..

    The aim of the article is to discuss the significance of historical anniversaries in the period of People’s Poland by comparing the celebrations of the Year of Copernicus in 1953 and 1973. First, the focus is placed on the institutional analysis of the celebrations and the characteristics of their main participants. Then, the discursive mechanisms of attributing significance to the figure of Nicolaus Copernicus are presented, with a particular emphasis on the value of progressiveness, revolution, anticlericalism. Finally, the author makes an attempt to evaluate the effects of commemoration policy in the Polish society.

    The Kazakh folk epic talks about the heroic deeds and life of nomadic tribes, being the historical and cultural heritage of the nation, which has been passed from mouth to mouth for centuries, thereby preserving national memory and contributing to the maintenance of patriotic feelings. The purpose of this article is not only to consider the Kazakh epic in the traditional vein of narrating about the historical past, but also to emphasize its ethnographic and genealogical value. By analyzing epic poetry, folk songs and folklore in general, as well as examining fragments of individual works, the authors recreate a holistic picture of the genealogical basis of the folk epic. The article compares the differences in the traditions of the Kazakh epic poetry of the 16th-18th and 19th centuries, which are observed, first of all, in the compositional structure, the subject of the story, the worldview in general. According to the results of the study, it was determined that the genealogical basis of the Kazakh folk epic lies in a certain archetype of a hero, the only son born to become a defender of the honor and dignity of the nation. At the same time, special attention is paid to describing its origin through a poetic description of its family tree. From this follows the complex genre of the epic chronicle, which has artistic and historical value and is an example of spiritual heritage. This study is of practical use for specialists in the field of history, literature, ethnography and genealogy.

    The subject matter of this paper concerns the early phase of Vasily Grossman’s literary career in the mid-1930s. Prior to this period, the author proved his ability to evaluate the mechanisms of censorship and developed his understanding of what was publishable and what could be sanctioned through the publication process of his first novel (Bit-Yunan, Fel’dman 2019). The research material selected for this paper is the lesser-known short story Zhizn’ Il’i Stepanovicha [The life of Il’ya Stepanovich], published in 1935, and the aim is to provide a close reading and an interpretation key to this text. In order to expose the hidden ambiguity of the short story, the chosen research perspective includes a focus on the function of the protagonist as an entity that does not legitimise the socialist myth; a narratological approach on the use of proper names, on “perspective” and the role of the narrator with regard to the axiological structure of the text.

    Artykuł przestawia problematykę portretu filmowego jako elementu konstrukcji dzieła filmowego i kreacji bohatera. Kolejne dziedziny sztuki, w ramach których rozwija się portret, oferują nowe środki i możliwości opowiadania o postaci (bohaterze). Silnym elementem tworzącym konstrukt dzieła filmowego jest portret zarówno w wymiarze formalnym, jak I psychologicznym. Podjęte badania łączą analizę portretu filmowego ze współczesną tendencją gatunkową w kinematografii, jakim jest kino komiksowe i superbohaterskie. Jan Komasa stworzył nowoczesny, eklektyczny obraz wydarzeń historycznych w filmie Miasto 44 o Powstaniu Warszawskim, łącząc konwencję filmów o superbohaterach z opowieścią historyczną, odtwarzającą autentyczne wydarzenia II wojny światowej. Poprzez analizę elementów sztuk plastycznych (m.in. kompozycji, kolorystyki, perspektywy, stosunkach światła i cienia) oraz elementów filmowych (takich jak muzyka i dźwięk, ruch, montaż i zastosowanie efektów specjalnych) udało się ukazać inspiracje kinem superbohaterskim oraz wskazać na możliwości portretu w oddawaniu psychicznych i fizycznych cech bohaterów.
    The article presents the issues of the film portrait as an element of the construction of the film work and the creation of the protagonist. Subsequent fields of art in which the portrait develops offer new means and possibilities of telling about the character (protagonist). A strong element creating the construct of a film work is a portrait, both in a formal and psychological dimension. The undertaken research combines the analysis of the film portrait with the contemporary genre tendency in cinematography, which is comic and superhero cinema. Jan Komasa created a modern, eclectic image of historical events in the film Warsaw 44 about the Warsaw Uprising, combining the convention of superhero films with a historical story that recreates the authentic events of World War II. By analyzing elements of visual arts (e.g. composition, colors, perspective, relations of light and shadow) and film elements (such as music and sound, movement, editing and the use of special effects), it was possible to show inspiration from superhero cinema and indicate the possibilities of a portrait in reflecting the mental and physical characteristics of the heroes.

    Zofia Kossak introduced Maryna Mniszchówna as one of the historical characters in her novel Złota wolność. By doing that she took the challenge of facing the tradition of writing about the empress (present for example in Józef Szujski’s dramas). The article includes an analysis of the method in which Kossak turns Maryna into a literary character, using available sources thoroughly, but creating a different, new story. The writer emphasizes the difference by introducing into the novel the character of Jadwiszka Paryshazówna as an alter ego of the empress, personifying all the vices attributed to her in stereotypes. Kossak used her own social experience (including the traditional role of a woman) to show a famous historical figure in a different way, thanks to which she was able to satisfy her female readers, who did not find a fully developed heroine in previous historical novels. Researchers who deal with Kossak’s work have not paid attention to Maryna Mniszech before. In the analyses that investigate the presence of the empress in cultural texts, the novel Złota wolność has been neglected or mentioned briefly. The article fills this gap.

    In the article there have been analyzed the theme of Ukraine during the period of the First World War, the specificity of the problem of man and war and also the image of the main hero in the work of Oleksandr Lugovoi „In the claws 147 of a double-headed eagle” (1955). In the story-chronicle the author has depicted the Battle of Galicia and Brusilov breakthrough which were successful for the Russian army and also consequences of the Galician-Tarnuvsky breakthrough by the troops of the Fourth army. The artistic skill of the author is mainly directed to uncovering the problem of man and war. Naturalistic, Oleksandr Lugovoir depicts pictures of human losses on the battlefield, reveals the psychological soldiers’ metamorphoses during the war, skillfully using historically credible facts of Galician’s evacuation. He describes using of “burned land tactics” by the Russian army during the retreat and also exposes the terrible truth about the Great War. The central theme is connected with the plot that is the way of its disclosure. The plot of the work is connected with life of the main character V. Povolotsky. In thoughts the main hero comprehends the events of the war, philosophically generalizes their consequences. Through the image of the main hero Oleksandr Lugovoi reveals the internal motivations of ideological and moral sources of human behavior in the war. The author reveals the theme of the war on ontological and anthropological levels. The character of the main hero is revealed by the author through the characteristics of the narrator, internal monologues of the main hero, during dialogues of V. Povolotsky with other characters, description their attitude to him, the behavior of the hero both in peaceful life and on the battlefield. The problem of man and guilty is depicted by the author with the help of the motive of pain and hopelessness. The motive of pain stands out during the descriptions of war victims. The depiction of the totality of war in the work is achieved through the landscapes. The problem of man and war reveals by the author by means of the descriptions of life of a simple soldier in the war. The motive of humanism and antimilitarism appears from the author’s retreats and thoughts of V. Povolotsky. The author of the article appeals to scientific research about Oleksandr Lugovoi. The central theme of the work is revealed at the level of the phenomenon of individual, author’s life. So, in the historical story-chronicle “In the claws of a double-headed eagle” Oleksandr Lugovoi through the prism of the world perception of the officer of the Russian army V. Povolotsky highlights the central theme of the work – Ukraine during the First World War. With the help of depicting the image of the main hero, forming his character, critical attitude to world political reality reveals the problem of man and war. Motives of pain, despair, humanism and antimilitarism sound in skillfully drawn landscapes, author’s retreats, bloody military tops.

    This article is devoted to the construction of the concept of the “hero” and of “heroism.” In contrast to the majority of Western works on societies that did not experience direct mass war actions during the Second World War and, in the opinion of some scholars, have entered the “post-heroic era,” the author concentrates on Ukrainian society, which since 2014 finds itself in a state of political, social, and military conflict in connection with the mass protests in the winter of 2013–2014, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014, and the ongoing war with separatists in two eastern regions of the country. The author’s main aim is to analyze the process of the social construction of a hero in conflict conditions. While making use of the examples of activities serving to make heroes of the participants of the Revolution of Dignity and the war in Donbass, the author presents (1) the means of socially creating important meanings and stories about the “new Ukrainian heroes,” (2) the entities taking part in that process, and (3) the function of commemorating heroes in a society experiencing war.The author claims that the armed conflict in Ukraine, which in a brief space of time produced thousands of victims, resulted in the crystallization of national borders and of the political community, with its consolidation in the face of a common enemy. She presents the role of “new heroes” in these processes.
