The article recalls two literary texts which signalled the facts denied or marginalized in Polish historical memory: a phenomenon of szmalcownictwo (blackmailing for money of Jews who were hiding) and the search for “Jewish gold”. The context for the study of both narrations is the contemporary historical discourse and its evolution that can be observed in the recent 10-20 years in the Polish public sphere.

Opis:
Isabel Burdiel (2015) points out that since the realism of the 19th century – the genre which inspired Almudena Grandes for her ambitious narrative project Episodios de una guerra interminable – there has been a constant exchange of narrative goals, interests and strategies between historic and novelistic discourse. Our aim within the present paper it is to ask ourselves about the significance of the cultural representations of emotions within her literary discourse, in this case, linked to the concept of community, as well as the implications that such a confluence has within the fictional recreation of some aspects of Spain’s recent past, taking Inés y la alegría as an example. If it is true, as some historians state, that the rules that regulate emotions constitute social differences, and therefore, are a key aspect for explaining historical change, it seems that some of the time, works of fiction try to explain complex historical processes based on, not only individual, but also collective, emotional changes. According to Grandes’s social worldview, an individual’s sense of fulfilment only seems possible within the framework of a community that provides support and solidarity networks. In this sense, we can link her novel in an indirect way with the emergence during recent years – as Jo Labanyi (2016) states – of “communal options that reject market-oriented logic. A pattern of thought which prioritizes the relation and not the individual”.

The concept of four-level context by Ruth Wodak is to provide triangulation and minimize the risk of being biased. Simultaneously the analysis of this concept in combination with the research programme of HDA is an expression of interdisciplinarity’s importance in this approach. One should notice that interdisciplinarity is not an aim itself and it is a subject to limitations. The most specific limitations are those which result from triangulation on the interdiscursive level.

The article deals with the problem of polysystem differences between Polish and English historical text dealing with Middle Ages. In the Polish literary tradition, the Renaissance poetics of translation favored free adaptations, totally independent of the originals. The British tradition of translation, codified at the end of the eighteenth century, did not allow paraphrase. On the contrary, translation should give a full transcript of the idea of the original text, while the style and manner of rendering should have the same character as in the original. As for the rhetoric of science, in the Polish language, it was first shaped by literary models of highly declensional Latin and then French models of purple prose. In the English language, scientific diction was based on inherent Germanic and Norman syntax-oriented models and openness to foreign patterns which was valued as a resistance against smooth reading and straightforward interpretations. The article analyses Henryk Samsonowicz’s introduction to Rozkwit średniowiecznej Europy [The Heyday of Medieval Europe] (2001) as well as the Polish translation of Chris Wickham’s Medieval Rome. Stability and Crisis of the City, 900–1150 (2015). The conclusion is that Polish and English scientific texts – not only those treating about Italy in the Middle Ages – belong to different genres. While Polish authors try to create linguistically transparent, smooth, and stylized essays belonging to belles-lettres, their English colleagues seem to be down-to-earth and precise, consciously preserving traces of cultural (Italian/ Roman) foreignness.
L’articolo affronta il problema delle differenze di polisistema tra testi storici polacchi e inglesi che trattano del Medioevo. Nella tradizione letteraria polacca, le poetiche rinascimentali della traduzione prediligevano il libero adattamento, del tutto indipendente dall’originale. La tradizione britannica della traduzione, codificata alla fine del XVIII secolo non permetteva la parafrasi. Al contrario, la traduzione dovrebbe trasmettere totalmente l’idea del testo originale, mentre lo stile e il modo di renderle dovrebbero avere le stesse caratteristiche dell’originale. Per quanto riguarda la retorica della scienza, nella lingua polacca, essa è stata dapprima formata da modelli letterari latini altamente declinanti e in seguito da modelli francesi di prosa ornata. Nella lingua inglese, la dizione scientifica era basata su modelli orientati alla sintassi germanica e normanna e l’apertura verso modelli stranieri era valutata come una resistenza ad una lettura scorrevole e ad interpretazioni chiare. L’articolo analizza l’introduzione di Henryk Samsonowicz a Rozkwit średniowiecz-nej Europy [Lo splendore dell’Europa Medioevale] (2001), così come la traduzione polacca di Medieval Rome. Stability and Crisis of the City di Chris Wickham (2015). Si conclude che i testi scientifici polacchi ed inglesi – non solo quelli che trattano dell’Italia nel Medioevo – appartengono a generi diversi. Mentre gli autori polacchi cercano di creare saggi linguisicamente trasparenti, scorrevoli e stilizzati appartenenti alle belles-lettres, i loro colleghi inglesi sembrano essere più concreti e precisi, conservando consapevolmente le tracce dell’alterità culturale (italiana/romana).

Although many studies have been carried out regarding the tabloidisation of opinion forming media, it has not yet been examined whether the tabloidisation process applies to popular scientific discourse on historical topics on YouTube and, if so, whichdeterminants of this process can be identified. This article pursues this objective by reviewing the content and style of the Historia bez Cenzury [History without Censorship] channel. The main analytical categories used were personalisation and sensationalism.The analysis of the content made it possible to see to what extent personalisation and sensationalism are present within the subject matter of, Historia bez Cenzury [History without Censorship], while the analysis of the style identified the stylistic determinants of the two identified mechanisms of tabloidisation. The results allow us to conclude that, in terms of the subject matter, the potential for personalisation and sensationalism is exploited equally on the channel. In terms of stylistic solutions, personalisation is achieved by depicting the privacy of historical figures using lexis typical of this human sphere. In addition, politics is portrayed through the prism of human relationships, which is served by saturating the text with names, surnames, and names of professions or positions. Simplifications are also applied (narrative, colloquialisms, dialogicality in the youtuber-viewer relationship). Sensationalism ismainly materialised at the level of content, whereas within the style, it is executed by means of an emotionally charged and highly evaluative lexis. Comparison of the determinants of tabloidisation with the characteristics of historical discourse on YouTube and with those of popular science discourse indicates mutual influences, evident at the level of content and style. The means specific to tabloidisation and atypical of the other discourses discussed emerge as the exposure of the privacy of historical figures and the dialogicality used in their description. The process of tabloidisation is thus evident in, Historia bez Cenzury [History without Censorship].

The purpose of the article is to analyse the process of change in Russian historical policy from a foreign policy perspective. The article hypothesizes that the historical policy can be considered as an indicator of changes in Russia’s foreign policy, allowing to infer the direction of its future development, playing both an ‘integrative’ and ‘disintegrative’ role. Using the example of the EU, the impact of Russia’s historical policy on the EU’s historical narrative is examined. While in the analysed context the new Russian historical narrative signalled a growing distrust and a more confrontational stance towards the EU (a disintegrative role), its unintended side effect was the construction of a common European historical narrative (an integrative role) pushed by the Central and Eastern European states in response to Russia’s aggressive rhetoric on historical issues, the interpretation of which few years earlier had divided the ‘old’ and ‘new’ member states.

Political extremism and particularly right-wing political extremism is a present phenomenon, which is from the perspective of Criminology research so specific, that it requires a specific approach in its assessment, especially from a position of legal experts. therefore it is advisable to choose a suitable specific methodology of scientific research on this phenomenon and the need for the court to provide findings that are relevant in the decision in a particular case. in conclusion, the author is then proposing general principles and approaches to solve this current phenomenon of our time.

Positioned within the discourse-historical approach (DHA) to discourse analysis, this paper examines the function of discursive constructions of the welfare state as a concept in asserting political identities in a corpus of British newspaper articles. It finds the boundaries of the concept are an important factor in the construction of such identities and proposes that delineation of concept boundaries be considered among the discursive strategies analysed in DHA.

The article deals with the concept of solidarity in the context of the current refugee crisis. Specifically, employing the Discourse-Historical Approach, it explores how solidarity is constructed in the discourse of the EU and in two member states, in Poland and in the Czech Republic which have been very critical of the EUropean approach to refugees from the beginning of the refugee crisis in 2015. As the findings suggest, relocations seem to be the only contested aspect of a more complex solution. On all other initiatives, there is an agreement between the EU and Poland and the Czech Republic even though the discourse might seem escalated at first sight. Moreover, drawing on the theoretical overview, the balancing of solidarity as a value with national interests and focus on security seems to be in line with the theoretical conceptualisation of international solidarity.
