Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present Karol Boguslaw Reichert, a relatively unknown anatomist and embryologist born in Kętrzyn, Poland. The disciple of Johannes Muller and professor of various universities: Dorpat (Tartu), Berlin and Wrocław, he become famous for his theory of the internal ear bones development from pharyngeal arches. He was also a proponent of Theodor Schwann’s theory on the development of organisms from single cells.

Opis:
The main goal of this article was the analysis of the changes of mechanical properties, thickness and histology of the cartilage in different regions of the femur head in advanced stage of the osteoarthritis. Methods: The study material consisted of cylindrical specimens (9.7 mm) prepared form proximal epiphysis of the human femur bone after hip arthroplasty. The thickness was determined from the reconstruction of the specimen from microtomography (SkyScan 1172, Bruker®) images. Mechanical properties of the cartilage tissue were identified in static indentation test conducted the use of MTS® Synergie 100 testing machine. Histological study enabled us to determine cartilage total thickness as well as location and orientation of the collagen fibers. Results: Depending on the region of the head, the cartilage tissue thickness was in the range (0.74–2.23 mm). The lowest thickness values were obtained for the R5 region and the lowest for R4. Samples from R1–R4 regions differ by 24%. Measurements of cartilage tissue indentation, determined with the help of Hayes’ formula, showed that the values of mechanical parameters in regions R1, R2, R3 and R5 have similar values (the difference between them is about 5.5%). Region R4, which had the smallest thickness, also had the lowest values of mechanical parameters. Conclusions: Using κ coefficients, proposed by Hayes, enabled us to obtain similar values of mechanical parameters in the regions R1, R2, R3 and R5, despite differences in cartilage tissue thickness. The R4 region, which had the weakest mechanical parameters, was characterized by the strongest reduction of the articular cartilage tissue, which was accompanied by an unformed mass of cartilage residue originating from the abraded surface and bursa fluid.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the work was to create an appropriate substrate for organ transplantation using bioactive tissue-based scaffold populated by cells of the graft recipient. The purpose of the modeling was to investigate the mechanical effects of wave loading of aortic and pulmonary tissue material. Methods: The biological properties of tissues of aortic and pulmonary valves were modified by the process of decellularization. The host cells were removed by various physical methods with focus on minimal degradation of the extracellular matrix. Thus, the decellularization process was controlled by histological methods. The tissue decellularization process was simulated by finite element modelling. Results: The mechanical results represented by a displacement at the center of the sample were coherent and the heterogeneity of the distribution of the caves on the surface of the samples was confirmed, both by experiment and in the simulation by the alternate occurrence of local minima and maxima. The latter results from the uneven removal of cells from the effect of the wave causing decellularization were also predicted by the numerical model. Laser radiation had a destructive effect on the components of the extracellular matrix (e.g., collagen and elastic fibers), mainly depending on the fluence and number of pulses in a single exposure. Conclusions: The differences between the valve tissue materials were shown, and the impact of the process of decellularization on the properties of the tissues was analyzed. It should be emphasized that due to low absorption and high scattering, laser radiation can deeply penetrate the tissue, which allows for effective decellularization process in the entire volume of irradiated tissue.

Opis:
Placoid and polyodontode scales of stem chondrichthyans have been found in the early Lochkovian “Ditton Group” of the Brown Clee Hill district, Shropshire, England and at Talgarth, south Wales. One of the forms is assigned to a new species of Altholepis Karatajūtė-Talimaa, 1997, a genus already recognised from Lochkovian shallow marine deposits in Celtiberia, Spain and the Northwest Territories, Canada as well as the type locality in Podolia, Ukraine. Altholepis salopensis sp. nov. is based on small polyodontode scales with typically three to eight high odontodes; the scale form was previously considered to belong to acanthodian “Nostolepis” robusta (Brotzen, 1934). The structure of other scales formerly assigned to “Nostolepis” robusta has led us to erect a new genus Jolepis for this scale form, which differs from Altholepis in lacking an ordered layout of odontodes. Jolepis robusta (Brotzen, 1934), originally (and possibly still) considered to be an acanthodian, is also known from the Baltic countries, Russia, and northern Germany (ex erratic limestones). Scales of acanthodian Parexus recurvus Agassiz, 1845, and/or possibly from the stem chondrichthyan Seretolepis elegans Karatajūtė-Talimaa, 1968 (scales of these two taxa are barely distinguishable), and of stem chondrichthyan Polymerolepis whitei Karatajūtė-Talimaa, 1968 are also present. Altholepis, Jolepis gen. nov., Seretolepis Karatajūtė-Talimaa, 1968 and Polymerolepis KaratajūtėTalimaa, 1968 are found in marine deposits elsewhere; the British occurrence of these taxa adds to the debate on the sedimentological origins of the Lower Old Red Sandstone deposits in the Welsh Borderland. The geographic range of several early sharks is now known to extend around the Old Red Sandstone continent and beyond.
