Opis:
This paper deals with an advanced modeling of the feed drives of a five axis machine tool within the context of High Speed Machining. The management of the multi axes as well as high velocities causes problems to the set machine tool – Numerical Controller throughout the trajectory execution process. As a result, many errors are introduced during machining all process long affecting the surface quality. The paper aims at modeling the feed drive dynamics during trajectory follow-up including the current, the velocity and position loops as well as the feed forward terms, which characterize classical drives on actual HSM machines. It concerns translational axes as well as rotary axes. A procedure of identification of the virtual axis model are detailed for three and five axis trajectories presenting various types of geometrical discontinuities.

Opis:
Subtracting manufacturing technologies have entered that realm of production possibilities which, even a few years ago, could not be directly adapted to direct production conditions. The current machines, i.e. heavy, rigid cutting machines using high spindle speed and high feed speed, allow for manufacturing very thin and relatively long parts for use in the automotive or aerospace industry. In addition, the introduction and implementation of new 70XX aluminium alloys with high strength parameters, as well as monolithic diamond cutting tools for special machining, have had a significant impact on the introduction of high-speed machining (HSM) technologies. The main ad-vantage of the applied manufacturing method is obtaining a very good smoothness and surface roughness, reaching even Sz = 6–10 μm and Sa <3 μm, and about four times faster and more efficient machining compared to conventional machining (for the beam part). Moreover, fixed and repeatable milling process of the HSM method, reduction of operational control, easy assembly of components and increase in the finishing efficiency compared to other methods of plastic processing (forming) are other benefits. The authors present a method using HSM for the manufacturing of aircraft parts, such as the chassis beam at the front of a commuter aircraft. The chassis beam assembly is made of two parts, front and rear, which – through a bolted connection – form a complete element replacing the previous part made using traditional technology, i.e., cavity machining, bending and plastic forming. The implementation of HSM technology eliminates many operations related to the construction of components, assembling the components (riveting) and additional controls during construc-tion and assembly.

Next-generation of High-Speed Machining (HSM) systems demand advanced features such as intelligent control under uncertainty. This requires, in turn, an efficient administration and optimization of all system's resources towards a previously identified objective. This work presents an optimization system based on Markov Decision Process (MDP), where an intelligent control guides the actions of the operator in peripheral milling processes. Early results suggest that MDP framework can cope with this application, yielding several benefits, which are discussed in detail. Future work will address the full integration of the developed optimization scheme within a commercial machining center.

Opis:
The paper deals with the impact of high-speed machining production methods on the integrity of component surfaces. One has to point out that cutting conditions during machining have a significant impact on the final properties of surface and subsurface layers of the workpiece. The conclusion summarizes and analyzes the achieved results of experimental activities on stainless austenitic steel 1.4301, hardened tool steel 1.2343 and high-speed steel 1. 3344 (ASP 2023). The results of the work experimental parts demonstrate the influence of cutting parameters on selected surface integrity ones, specifically strengthening the surface and subsurface layers. The performed experiments show that microhardness of a surface layer of the machined material can be influenced by suitable cutting conditions and other cutting process parameters.

Opis:
At the present time both clutch and mechanism housings, which are the main components from automotive gear boxes, are made of special aluminium alloys. These alloys are extremely light when compared with steel, making them a perfect choice to mitigate the cars weight and machining costs. Nonetheless they possess a high thermal expansion coefficient, which can be considered a major disadvantage since it makes necessary to pay extraordinary attention to dimensional variations during the production cycle due to temperature deviations. High speed machining of precision components made of aluminium requests thus their temperature to become previously stable. This procedure is the only way to force dimensions to stay inside its tolerance intervals. The main purpose of the present work was to assess the possibility to avoid the use of special ovens to make the clutch housing temperature become stable prior to machining. The dimensional stabilization of 40 sample parts, pre-heated at three temperature levels, was accomplished through the use of this system. The achieved results were made possible by analysing the part's temperature at the machine's entrance, the machine's interior temperature, 35 measured dimensions and their tolerance intervals as well as the average temperature deviations of each of the five considered batches. By analysing the obtained results in detail it was possible to determine which dimensions show high sensitiveness to temperature (high correlation between dimension's variation and temperature). Among these dimensions we can point out the ones related with depth, since they display the highest deviations due to temperature. Being a work with practical application it was possible to confirm the benefit of using this methodology by achieving significant enhancements on production efficiency, energy savings and reduction on maintenance costs, through the application of small adjustments to the machining sequence and by adopting a systematic tuning of certain dimensions.

Opis:
Aircraft structures are designed to mainly consist of integral elements which have been produced by welding or riveting of component parts in technologies utilized earlier in the production process. Parts such as ribs, longitudinals, girders, frames, coverages of fuselage and wings can all be categorized as integral elements. These parts are assembled into larger assemblies after milling. The main aim of the utilized treatments, besides ensuring the functional criterion, is obtaining the best ratio of strength to construction weight. Using high milling speeds enables economical manufacturing of integral components by reducing machining time, but it also improves the quality of the machined surface. It is caused by the fact that cutting forces are significantly lower for high cutting speeds than for standard machining techniques.

Opis:
This study aims to investigate the interplay between cutting speed and Thermal-Assisted Machining (TAM) concerning surface roughness during the high-speed machining of SKD11 steel. The integration of pre-cutting workpiece heating introduces a temperature factor that intricately affects surface roughness. The primary objective is to ascertain optimal speed and temperature ranges that synergistically enhance machining efficiency, curtail costs, and elevate surface quality. The experimental protocol initiates with room temperature milling of SKD11 steel, progressively elevating the temperature gradient to systematically appraise temperature's impact on surface roughness under both conventional and elevated cutting speeds. Subsequent experimentation, conducted within specific temperature thresholds, entails stepwise augmentation of cutting speed to elucidate the influence of high-speed conditions on surface roughness. The ensuing analysis meticulously examines the ramifications of distinct cutting speed intervals on surface roughness. Ultimately, the study furnishes pragmatic recommendations for judiciously selecting cutting speeds and heating temperature parameters across diverse machining scenarios.
