Opis:
The laser-matter interaction using nominal laser intensity above 1015 W/cm2 generates in vacuum non- -equilibrium plasmas accelerating ions at energies from tens keV up to hundreds MeV. From thin targets, using the TNSA regime, plasma is generated in the forward direction accelerating ions above 1 MeV per charge state and inducing high-ionization states. Generally, the ion energies follow a Boltzmann-like distribution characterized by a cutoff at high energy and by a Coulomb-shift towards high energy increasing the ion charge state. The accelerated ions are emitted with the high directivity, depending on the ion charge state and ion mass, along the normal to the target surface. The ion fluencies depend on the ablated mass by laser, indeed it is low for thin targets. Ions accelerated from plasma can be implanted on different substrates such as Si crystals, glassy-carbon and polymers at different fluences. The ion dose increment of implanted substrates is obtainable with repetitive laser shots and with repetitive plasma emissions. Ion beam analytical methods (IBA), such as Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) and proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) can be employed to analyse the implanted species in the substrates. Such analyses represent ‘off-line’ methods to extrapolate and to character the plasma ion stream emission as well as to investigate the chemical and physical modifications of the implanted surface. The multi-energy and species ion implantation from plasma, at high fluency, changes the physical and chemical properties of the implanted substrates, in fact, many parameters, such as morphology, hardness, optical and mechanical properties, wetting ability and nanostructure generation may be modified through the thermal-assisted implantation by multi-energy ions from laser-generated plasma.

Opis:
We consider the Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation which arises, e.g., as a linearization of a model for wave propagation in viscous thermally relaxing fluids. This third order in time equation displays, even in the linear version, a variety of dynamical behaviors for their solutions that depend on the physical parameters in the equation. These range from non-existence and instability to exponential stability (in time). It will be shown that by neglecting diffusivity of the sound coefficient there arises a lack of existence of a semigroup associated with the linear dynamics. More specifically, the corresponding linear dynamics consists of three diffusions: two backward and one forward. When diffusivity of the sound is positive, the linear dynamics is described by a strongly continuous semigroup which is exponentially stable when the ratio of sound speed×relaxation parameter/ sound diffusivity is sufficiently small, and unstable in the complementary regime. The theoretical estimates proved in the paper are confirmed by numerical validation.

Opis:
In Poland cancer is the second cause of death overall, and the first before 65. Demand for new anticancer therapies is increasing every year. The main objective of studies on medical and technical aspects of new anticancer methods is to reduce unwanted side effects and costs associated with conventional methods of treatment. Percutaneous (noninvasive) HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) technique gives the chance to radically reduce both of these factors. The main goal of this work is automation of HIFU technology for producing thermal damage to the entire volume of a solid breast tumor implanted into a rat mammary gland using the proposed bi-modal ultrasound equipment, enabling the ultrasonic heating of a small volume within the tumor under the ultrasonic imaging control, as well as 3D scanning of the heating beam focus throughout the entire tumor volume. Design of the proposed equipment includes the heating probe of low frequency (about 1MHz), allowing penetration of pulsed focused waves into tissues, and the linear phased array probe of high frequency (from 4 MHz to 10 MHz), allowing visualization of the locally heated area inside the tumor in real time. Automatic 3D scanning of the heating beam focus provides the thermal damage to its entire volume.

Opis:
Physical Education classes fail to reach the minimum levels of moderate-vigorous activity recommended by international policies (50% of the class duration). Although several methodological strategies have been suggested in scientific literature to combat this limitation, few proposals exist in educational practice in this context. In this sense, the objective of this work was to integrate the emerging high intensity interval training method into a traditional learning unit of Physical Education with the intention of increasing intensity. The results showed that the students analysed improve their body composition and some components of the physical condition, in a non-significant manner. In conclusion, it seems to be a priority to include methodological strategies during physical education classes in order to achieve adequate intensity. The method presented in this practical proposal shows a positive trend in improving health in schoolchildren, although future research is necessary to confirm or refute the results found.

Opis:
Joining of metals with ceramics is very difficult, because properties of these materials are very different. One of the methods of improving mechanical strength of the obtained joints is the introduction of an additional interlayer to the joining area. This paper presents the Zr and Cu-rich layers in C and SiC substrates obtained using the high intensity pulsed plasma beams method. The results of Zr plasma modifications were beneficial and similar to the results obtained in previous works with Ti. The measured contact angles were below 90 centigrade. The results with Cu plasma were unfavourable with contact angles close to 180 centigrade. Apart from the sessile-drop test and to extend the range of analysis, the investigated samples were examined by stereoscopic optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), grazing angle X-ray diffraction (GXRD), and Rutherford back scattering (RBS) measurements.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of ultrasound ciliary plasty (UCP) for treating refractory glaucoma during one year follow-up. Material and methods: A total of 57 patients (37 F, 20 M; mean age: 67.6 years) with primary and secondary refractory glaucoma were enrolled to undergo UCP. The inclusion criteria for the study were: ≥ 18 years, uncontrolled open-angle glaucoma (IOP > 21 mmHg), contraindication to incisional glaucoma surgery, intolerance to glaucoma medications despite well-controlled IOP. The exclusion criteria were: pregnancy, age < 18 years, IOP > 30 mmHg, angle-closure glaucoma and neovascular glaucoma. Complete ophthalmic examinations were performed preoperatively and as well as 1 week and 1, 3, 6, 12 months postoperatively. An IOP reduction of 20% or > 5 mmHg as compared to the baseline value was considered as successful treatment. Complete success was defined as cessation of antiglaucoma medications. Results: The mean IOP at the last follow-up was reduced by 26.9%. The success rate was 87.7% and the complete success rate was 12.3%. The mean ± SD values of the number of antiglaucoma medications were: 4.0 ± 0.9, 0.9 ± 1.1, 0.9 ± 1.1, 1.1 ± 1.1, 1.8 ± 1.4, 2.1 ± 1.4, 2.4 ± 1.4 (p < 0.001 for all values), respectively. The best-corrected logMAR visual acuities were: 0.37 ± 0.46, 0.47 ± 0.45 (p = 0.003), 0.46 ± 0.45 (p = 0.004), 0.31 ± 0.37 (p = 0.151), 0.36 ± 0.45 (p = 0.880), 0.39 ± 0.47 (p = 0.504), respectively. Following the procedure, choroid detachment was observed in three patients (5.3%) and macular in two patients (3.5%). No other major intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred. Conclusion: Ultrasound ciliary plasty is a safe and well-tolerated procedure in medium-term follow-up. Further studies with a larger group of patients and longer follow-up are needed to confirm these results.

Opis:
Stress-strain mechanical properties of polystyrene foam plastic material were tested under different loading conditions. An empirical constitutive model for describing metal materials was proposed for the polystyrene plastic foam. The static and dynamic tests results show that the ductility and watertightness of the polystyrene plastic foam are significantly improved. At the same time, in order to check its seismic-isolation property, the high-performance foam concrete as filling materials of Galongla tunnel in Tibet was simulated by FEM. The simulated results show that the polystyrene plastic foam can remarkably decrease the stress and the plastic zone in final lining, so it can effectively reduce the seismic damage of the tunnel. Considering the seismic-isolation property and low price of polystyrene plastic foam, it is a good reference for the anti-seismic design of tunnels in high intensity zones.

This study aims to find the effectiveness of different exercise intensities (high-, moderate-, and low-intensity) on the dynamic and static balance of elderly women. A single-blinded factorial design study was conducted in healthy older adults (>65 years) in 12 weeks. The authors have assessed the Forward Reach Test (FRT), Lateral Reach Test (LRT), One Leg Stand (OLS), Tandem Stand Test (TST) in 60 healthy older women at a gym centre, Fit House located in Bukit Rimau, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Participants were randomly assigned to a High-Intensity Training (HIT) group; (n=15) (Mean age 69.60 ± 3.68) who performed four exercises [Leg Press (LP), Leg Extension (LE), Leg Curl (LC), and Calf Raises (CR)] at 80 to 90% of One-Repetition Maximum (1RM); Moderate-Intensity Training (MIT) group (n=15) (Mean age 69.27 ± 3.41) performed at 65 to 75% of 1RM; Low- Intensity Training (LIT) group (n=15) (Mean age 69.27 ± 1.94) performed at 50 to 60% of 1 RM; and a Control Group (CG) (n = 15) (Mean age 68.67 ± 2.38) with no training. Data was collected at pre-test, 4th, 8th, and 12th weeks of intervention. 60 participants were analysed and the main effect of time showed a statistically significant difference in the mean of all variables (all p < 0.001), and also there was a statistically significant interaction between intervention and time on all variables (all p < 0.001). Different levels of intensity on only the lower extremities muscles had a significant effect on the dynamic balance and static balance of the elderly population. After four weeks of training HIT, MIT, and LIT illustrated significant improvement in dynamic balance, as well as static balance.

The emergence of high-intensity focused ultrasound applications brings great potential to establish noninvasive therapeutic treatment in place of conventional surgery. However, the development of ultrasonic technology also poses challenges to the design and manufacture of high-power ultrasound transducers with sufficient acoustic pressure. Here, the design of a sector vortex Archimedean spiral phased array transducer that is able to enhance focal acoustic pressure is proposed by maximizing the filling factor of the piezoelectric array. The transducer design was experimentally verified by hydrophone measurements and matched well with acoustic simulation studies. The focal deflection was shown to be feasible up to ±9 mm laterally and up to ±20 mm axially, where the effective focal acoustic pressure can be maintained above 50% and the level of the grating lobe below 30%. Furthermore, a homogeneous pressure distribution without secondary focus was observed in the pre-focal region of the transducer. The rational design of a high-intensity focused ultrasound transducer indicates promising development in the treatment of deep tissue thermal ablation for clinical applications.

In order to improve the physiology of plants, this research evaluated the effect of high-intensity LED light (red, blue and green) on the following variables: germination (PG), hypocotyl length (HL), fresh (FW) and dry (DW) weight, in three types of lettuce seed (White Boston, Romana and Black Simpson). Exposure times with colour light were 12, 6 and 3h, with a complement of time for treatments with 6 and 3h of white LED light. We used a completely randomised design with four replications of 30 seeds. Treatments with green and red light to 12h had increases above 90% in HL against the control for the three varieties. The blue light treatment (3h) increased 23% in FW White Boston variety and the red light (3h) increased 14% the DW variable in Roman variety, compared to the control. In this study, treatments with colour light presented results above the control; however, a treatment with a single type of light is not optimal to improve plant physiology. The physiological responses evaluated showed variation related to the genotype of seed and to the time of exposure to high-intensity LED light, so this type of light is a viable option for improving the physiology of plants.
W celu uzyskania poprawy fizjologii roślin, w badaniach dokonano oceny wpływu światła LED wysokiej intensywności (czerwone, niebieskie i zielone) na następujące zmienne: kiełkowanie (PG), długość hipokotylu (HL), świeżej (FW) i suchej (DW) masy nasion trzech odmian sałaty (White Boston, Romana i Black Simpson). Czasy naświetlania światłem barwnym wynosiły 12, 6 and 3 h, z uzupełniającym doświetlaniem wariantów z czasami 6 i 3 h białym światłem LED.

Przed i po serii 10 zabiegów HILT pacjentom pobrano krew w celu oznaczenia markerów obrotu kostnego: osteokalcyny (OC, marker kościotworzenia) i markera resorpcji kości, C-końcowego telopeptydu kolagenu typu I (CTx). Dodatkowo oceniono wpływ terapii HILT na dolegliwości bólowe, za pomocą skali VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) oraz zmodyfikowanego kwestionariusza Leitinena. Wyniki i wnioski.
High Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) is a quite new method in physical therapy. There is not enough information on the influence of a therapeutic high intensity light on human body. It is well known that electromagnetic radiation influences the metabolism and stimulates vascularisation, as well as proliferation of many cells, among them osteoblasts. Aim. The aim of this work was to evaluate the changes in bone metabolism after bone fracture in patients subjected to this kind of laser irradiation (HILT). Material and method. The group of 22 patients with a radial bone fracture was subjected to the therapy HILT (? = 880 nm, P=1500 mW, ED=4 J/cm2). Before and after the treatment the biochemical markers of bone turnover were evaluated, as well as pain level was estimated. Results and conclusions. The obtained results confirmed good analgesic effect of HILT, already just after first administration. The examination of biochemical markers of bone turnover did not confirm the influence of HILT on the process of bone healing.

Opis:
The article attempts to theoretically systematize conflicts in contemporary Asia. At the beginning, attention was paid to the cultural and civilizational determinants of disputes and tensions in the region, which have a direct impact on the sphere of political activity of individual states. It has been found that ethnic and religious heterogeneity is the cause of tensions in Asia in most cases. The critical role of the United States in creating new security architecture across the Asian region has been determined. At the same time, it has been emphasized that multifaceted diversity is not always at odds with conflict-free development and stability. The exemplification of this hypothesis is Malaysia – a country of three cultures (Islamic, Chinese and Hindu). This country gives an example for the whole Asia that diversity does not mean the fatalism of internal conflicts. Malaysia can be an inspiration, especially for the Islamic civilizational circle.
