Opis:: The study was done in five Scots pine and five Norway spruce stands. Pine stands were infested by Heterobasidion annosum sensu stricto and spruce stands by Heterobasidion parviporum. In all stands the pathogens’ genets were identified. In Scots pine stands 54 genets were found. The biggest one covered area of 160,2 m² and was isolated from 11 stumps. 40% of genets were isolated only from one stump, but in some cases two or three genets colonized the same stump. In Norway spruce stands 55 genets were found. In most cases they were small and only two covered area of 38,5 m² and 40 m². The other ones colonized only one stump or more genets were found in the same stump. Genetic diversity among genets varied from 0 to 77%.

Opis:: Tolerance of several strains of the P-, S-, and F- intersterility groups of Heterobasidion annosum to low pH and high concentration of aluminium ions was studied on malt extract agar. There were marked intraspecific, but not intergroup, variations in tolerance to both factors. Some strains were relatively tolerant or sensitive to low pH and aluminium, while the others were tolerant to low pH but sensitive to Al. There was no relationship between tolerance of the strains to low pH and their tolerance to aluminium stress.

Opis:: Three products (RotstopF, RotstopS and PGSuspension) based on lyophylised spores of registered isolates of Phlebiopsis gigantea and non−registered Polish PgIBL as a control were tested in Scots pine stumps locat−ed in 3 forest regions (north−west, north, east) of Poland in autumn 2007, spring 2008 and autumn 2008. One year later the presence of: a) subcortical mycelium and b) the fruit bodies of P. gigantea, and c) symp−toms of sapwood decay were counted and compared as Biological Treatment Efficacy (BTE) index. Obtained BTE values inform that generally PgSuspension preparation was the most effective if applied in spring 2008, whereas both Rotstop preparates showed similar and compared effectiveness in all terms of application. The differences in preparation efficacy between forest regions were found.

Opis:: Changes in silvicultural and phytopathological parameters have been assessed in a 55−year−old pine stand established on post−agricultural land after 30 years from the application of three types of cutting (selective 10%, line every 4 and every 6 row) in this stand. It has been demonstrated that root rot causes changes in number and volume of merchantable timber of trees when protective treatments to stumps using the fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea are not applied during first improvement cuttings.

Opis:: Interactions between members of microfungal communities of three arable and two fallow land soils and three P strains of Heterobasidion annosum were investigated in vitro. The effect of soil fungi on the pathogen was evaluated with two methods. In the first, the mycelial growth of H. annosum strains was measured and the experimental data were analysed using statistics. In the second, the biotic series method was used. The differences between the effects of soil fungi dominating in arable and fallow land soils were statistically significant. The microfungal communities of fallow land soils inhibited the growth of the pathogen more than those inhabiting arable soils. Evaluation of suppressive effect of the soil fungi on the pathogen with biotic series method showed also far more negative influence of microfungal communities of fallow land soils on the growth of H. annosum strains. Considering the positive effect of chemical and biological properties of the fallow land soils on the growth of Scots pine and highly suppressive effect of microfungal communities of these soils on the growth of H. annosum observed in the presented study, it may be concluded that arable soils left barren for many years are more beneficial for establishing of Scots pine plantations than cultivated soils.
