The article presents the issue of formation for hermits, which is currently experiencing a specific heyday in the Church. Recently, more and more people have chosen one of the forms of individual consecrated life as their vocation path. Therefore, the life of the hermit is very popular. In order to take up this specific path of life, one needs an appropriate formation that will allow the future hermit to be correctly formed. In the article, the synthesis contains three selected documents: Hermit Life in the Tarragona Archdiocese. Statutes; The Basic Order of Hermit Life in the Diocese of Regensburg and The State of Hermits. Auxiliary Materials for the Church in Poland and an appendix to this document: Selected Pastoral Guidelines for Consecrated Hermits, which have a valuable full view of formation for this form of consecrated life. These documents are not only to be understood through their application in Can. 603 of the CCL, the spiritual and legal elements, but also unique elements inscribed in the history and spirituality of a given region, are indicated, which can serve the entire community of the Church and constitute a valuable source of the exchange of experiences on the subject of formation.

Życie pustelnicze jest ogromnym darem dla Kościoła. Obecnie można zauważyć zwiększone zainteresowanie tą indywidualną formą życia konsekrowanego. Kobiety i mężczyźni udają się na współczesne pustynie, aby trwać w Bożej obecności i złączyć swoje życie z Ukrzyżowanym Chrystusem. Ich tożsamość na nowo została wytyczona po Soborze Watykańskim II w kan. 603 Kodeksu prawa kanonicznego. Zwraca on uwagę na teologiczne (odsunięcie od świata, milczenie odosobnienia, gorliwa modlitwa, pokuta) i prawne (indywidualna forma życia, publiczna profesja trzech rad ewangelicznych oraz życie zgodne z statutem osobowym) elementy tożsamości pustelniczej.
A hermit life is a significant honour for the Church. Currently, we can notice an increased interest in this individual form of consecrated life. Women and men go to modern deserts to stay in God’s presence and unite their lives with the Crucified Christ. Their identity have redefined after the Second Vatican Council in canon 603 of the Code of Canon Law, which singles out the theological (retreat from the world, silence of seclusion, ardent prayer, penance) and legal (individual life form, public profession of three evangelical councils and life in accordance with the personal statute) elements of hermit identities.

Mark the Hermit is one of the most important theoreticians of ascetic life in the ancient Church. In his ascetic writings, he takes up a number of subjects, including teaching about freedom and grace. This is not a systematic doctrine, but rather statements scattered in his works, occasional, often similar to each other. “Freedom” is defined by St. Mark the Hermit by the term ἐλευθερία, while “grace” – by the term χάρις. He also reminds us that freedom is given to man by Christ; man also receives it in the sacrament of baptism, because it frees him from the burden of sin. Grace, in turn, is presented by Mark the Hermit always as a gift from God given to man. Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven is a gift, and not a reward for deeds, and the salvation that we receive from Christ is also grace. St Mark the Hermit’s teaching on freedom and grace certainly differs from the views of the Messalian sect, whose followers did not want to admit that grace and freedom are given to the baptised, so that they can perfect themselves throughout their lives and become similar to God.

Mark the Hermit, a monk from the 4th century, active probably in Asia Minor, indicates in an original way that the cause of passion in man is forgetting about good thoughts (lēthē), carelessness (rhathymia) and ignorance (agnoia). This threefold evil is opposed by the following means: forgetfulness – by memory of good works, carelessness – by most sincere readiness, ignorance – by enlightened cognition. Nobody before him had ever dealt with the causes of passion in such a way and indicated such an antidote to them. In order to understand Mark the Hermit’s theory, it is necessary to look in detail at this writer’s teaching about passion and the ascetic fight against it. This article is devoted to this spiritually important issue.

By taking up the problem of baptism in his writings, Mark the Hermit responds to the tendencies of the Messalians, who denied the value of baptism. Pointing to the consequences of the sacrament, he emphasizes its effectiveness in terms of being rescued from the corollaries of Adam’s sin, restoring freedom and the ability to fulfill the commandments. He emphasizes the priority and efficacy of grace given in a secret manner at the time of baptism. He reminds, however, that baptism does not deprive man of free will, but it can support it in fulfilling the law of God. He also emphasizes the mysterious indwelling of the entire Holy Trinity in the heart of the baptized and its activity. For Mark the Hermit baptism itself also involves “being placed in the paradise of the Church,” which he understands as the ability to perform acts of love towards one’s brothers.

Artykuł ukazuje brata Józefa Żarnowieckiego (1913-2003) i ma na celu zachowanie pamięci o jednej z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych postaci w sanktuarium w Kalwarii Zebrzydowskiej. Brat Józef przez ponad pół wieku wiódł ascetyczny żywot w kalwaryjskim sanktuarium. Ponieważ nie udało się zgromadzić o bracie Józefie zbyt wielu informacji z powodu jego skrytości, w pracy oparto się głównie na kilku publikacjach (artykule o kalwaryjskich pustelnikach, wywiadzie udzielonym przez brata Józefa, filmie dokumentalnym Pasja). Wizerunek brata Józefa wyłania się również ze świadectw pielgrzymów, pamiętających go osobiście. Ich wypowiedzi stanowią dodatkowe źródło informacji, jak brat Józef był postrzegany i jak wpływał na innych. Z przywołanych w artykule świadectw wyłania się postać skromnego, ubogiego człowieka, przemierzającego z nisko pochyloną głową dróżki, pogrążonego w głębokiej modlitwie. Swoją pełną pokory postawą przykuwał uwagę pielgrzymów, którzy chętnie obdarowywali go drobnymi datkami i prosili o modlitwę w różnych intencjach. W ich pamięci zapisał się przede wszystkim jako cichy pustelnik, „dziad” kalwaryjski.
The article presents the character of Brother Józef Żarnowiecki (1913-2003), and aims to preserve the memory of one of the most recognisable characters at the sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. Brother Józef, for more than half of the century, was an ascetic in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. Due to the secrecy of Brother Józef, not much direct information about him has been gathered. Therefore, the work was based on the publications such as: an article about Kalwarian’s hermits, an interview given by Brother Józef and a documentary titled Pasja [The Passion]. An image of Brother Józef emerges from testimonies of Kalwarian’s pilgrims as well. Their statements provide an additional source of information on how Brother Józef was perceived and what influence he had on others From the quoted in the article testimonies, we obtain the character of a modest, poor person, traversing Kalwarian’s paths with his head bowed low down, deep in prayer. With his humble attitude, he attracted pilgrims’ attention, who willingly gave him small donations, and asked for prayers for various intentions. In their memory, he primarily remains a silent hermit, “a Kalwarian’s beggar.”

Przykładem „nieprzeciętnej świętości” jest znana na Pomorzu postać błogosławionej Doroty z Mątów Wielkich, która urodziła się w Mątowach Wielkich 25 stycznia 1347 roku. W wieku siedemnastu lat Dorota wychodzi za mąż. Sakrament małżeństwa ma przybliżyć ją do doskonałości. Życie przyszłej rekluzy poznajemy dzięki trzem podstawowym dziełom łacińskim: Żywot Doroty z Mątów, Siedmiolilie Doroty z Mątów (1347–1394) oraz Księga o świętych, wszystkie autorstwa Jana z Kwidzyna. Aktualność przesłania jej osoby oraz błogosławionego życia dla człowieka XXI wieku widać szczególnie w trzech wymiarach: miłości bliźniego, modlitwy i Eucharystii. Miłość bliźniego bł. Dorota realizuje jako podejmowanie różnych uczynków miłosierdzia względem drugiego człowieka. Modlitwa rozumiana jako spotkanie z Bogiem towarzyszy Dorocie przez całe życie. Najważniejsza jest jednak dla niej Eucharystia, dlatego dąży do częstego przyjmowania Jezusa Eucharystycznego do swego serca. Błogosławiona jest wzorem dążenia w swoim życiu do świętości. 
Blessed Dorothy of Montau, a well-known Pomeranian saint born in Matowy Wielkie (Montau) on 25 January 1347, is an example of an outstanding sanctity of life. At the age of 17 she gets married. The sacrament of matrimony is to bring her closer to the perfection of life. What gives us a plenty of information on this future hermit are the three fundamental Latin works: “The Life of Dorothy of Montau”, “Dorothy of Montau’s Septililium (1347–1394)” and “The Book of Saints” by Johannes of Marienwerder. The relevance of her blessed life for the 21st – entury people is especially seen in three areas: the love of one’s neighbour, the prayer and the Eucharist. She practices the commandment of love in many acts of charity for the poor. The prayer – a meeting with God – accompanies Dorothy through whole her life. However, the Eucharist is of paramount importance to her and she strives to receive the Holy Communion frequently. Without doubt, Blessed Dorothy is an example of how to achieve sanctity in our lives.

The article analyses the figures of hermits and recluses presented in The Quest for the Holy Grail, and functioning in this anonymous Arthurian romance of the 13th century as variants of the figure of a spiritual mentor, complementing the figure of a master in chivalry. These characters shape the narrative discourse and enrich the sapiential, moral and formative aspects of the work. They also re-define the courtly ethos by introducing the idea of celestial chivalry, which complements the idea of terrestrial chivalry, typical of the Arthurian romance of the 12th century.
L’article propose une étude approfondie et interdisciplinaire de deux types de personnages emblématiques et inspirateurs qui manifestent leur présence dans la Queste del Saint Graal, texte arthurien français en prose du XIIIe siècle : le personnage de l’ermite et celui de la recluse. Figures du maître par excellence, ils sont porteurs du savoir et de la sagesse qui dépassent largement le cadre d’un simple didactisme et de la parénèse. Leur présence témoigne de l’ouverture de la littérature occidentale au souffle puissant de la spiritualité du christianisme oriental. Elle importe également pour la construction et le sens de l’univers représenté de l’ouvrage analysé.

In the article, a perspective of interpretation of the phenomenon of female anachoresis (departure to the desert as a gesture of discarding “the world”), slightly different from traditional one, has been proposed. The hermit-monkish tradition has been shown in reference to the psycho-transgression theory and the concept of socio-cultural habitus. The main goal was recognition of the anachoresis as a phenomenon of spiritual emigration, in a certain sense close to the internal emigration, and exposition of the model of hermit’s life as an unobvious act which involves not only ideas commonly known but also less frequently emphasized predilections and psychological mechanisms of a transcendental and transgression nature. For that reason, the fact of defining spiritual emigration turned out to be important, since it was realized as a kind of way out of the world: migration to the desert which was to reflect the socio-cultural notion of internal emigration, broadly understood as movement and change, motivated by projected or secondary achieved satisfaction, happiness, perfection, etc. In the presented reflection, an approach to the phenomenon of female anachoresis as an act of symbolic transgression was crucial, since it was conceived as going beyond the socio-cultural habitus framework, and a s a rejection action resulted, despite the paradoxically continuous duplication of dominant order matrices, in some loosening the habitual corset. An universal concept of the ideal of hermit-monkish life along with typology of spiritual attitudes shaped and implemented in various spatiotemporal contexts have remained, however, a peculiar frame of consideration discussed in the article. In intention and result, the reflection is in the current of commonly accepted rudiments, and has a linear conceptual dimension combining early Christian and medieval patterns, and growing out of the ground of diverse and time-differentiated, however, ideally close or even common body of cultural texts.

This article takes up the idea of hermits as an individual form of consecrated life. It is based on the available sources concerning the life of a hermit, especially in the initial period, and on publications. Raised questions are related to the specifics of hermit life and spirituality of the hermits. The hermit characteristics is made on the basis of the modern Code of Canon Law. It takes up the issue of the traditional activities of hermits. At the end there are suggestions for the formation for the life of a hermit and the premises resulting from the hermit spirituality for virgins and widows.
Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie pustelników jako przedstawicieli indywidualnej formy życia konsekrowanego. Oparto się na dostępnych źródłach dotyczących życia pustelniczego, zwłaszcza w jego okresie początkowym, oraz na opracowaniach. Postawiono pytania odnoszące się do specyfiki życia pustelniczego i duchowości pustelników. Scharakteryzowano życie pustelnicze w oparciu o współczesny kodeks prawa kanonicznego. Podjęto zagadnienie tradycyjnych zajęć pustelników. Na końcu podano sugestie dotyczące formacji do życia pustelniczego oraz przesłanki wynikające z duchowości pustelniczej dla dziewic i wdów.

Celem artykułu jest omówienie sytuacji finansowej konwentu Paulinów na Łąkach Panny Maryi pod Głogówkiem. Postawiono kilka pytań badawczych: 1) jakie były źródła dochodów, 2) jaka była wysokość dochodów, 3) na jakie cele wydatkowano pieniądze i w jakich kwotach, 4) jak kształtował się bilans finansowy placówki. Wszystkie ustalenia zostały opracowane na podstawie zachowanych źródeł archiwalnych, które znajdują się w Archiwum Zakonu Paulinów na Jasnej Górzew Częstochowie.

Work, beside prayer, that is to say God’s service were the essence of the first Monks life, what was rightly described by Benedictines’ maxim: ora et labora. First representatives of the life, which was completely given to God in Catholic Church, strived to make their work a prayer at the same time, so they could keep constant relation with God.  Main purpose of work, being a form of imitation of hard-working Christ and Apostles, was also participation in His redemptive work, and obtaining means needed for simple living, in accordance with evangelical poverty.  Work had also ascetic aspect for Monks, because it gave possibility of overcoming their own weaknesses, more complete realization of requirements included in the Gospel, and at the same time more accurately becoming similar to Christ. Thanks to work the Religious could give help to the people in need. Basic rules regarding meaning, understanding, and performing work were given in  Apophthegm of Desert Fathers, and Monastic Rules, whereas the rest had to be personally found out by each Monk, together with fulfillment of their duty performed in silence, and concentration, as well as obtaining experience in art of connecting prayer with work.  At the same time they all were aware, that to be a real Monk meant “to work with their own hands”.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie motywu pustyni w myśli duchowej Piotra Damianiego. W pierwszej części zaprezentowany został krótki rys biograficzny Piotra Damianiego, pozwalający lepiej zrozumieć jego wybory w życiu duchowym. W drugiej części została pokazana koncepcja życia monastycznego wzorowanego na życiu jego mistrza duchowego – św. Romualda. Piotr Damiani rozróżniał dwie drogi w życiu zakonnym: życie wspólnotowe i życie pustelnicze, eremickie. Według niego życie wspólnotowe było swoistym przygotowaniem do życia pustelniczego. W trzeciej części artykułu została zaprezentowana wartość i znaczenie życia pustelniczego, a także różnica między życiem wspólnotowym a życiem pustelniczym. Piotr Damiani podkreśla, że pustynia i cela jest idealnym miejscem dla mnicha, który chce osiągnąć doskonałość w życiu duchowym. Życie na pustyni jest pewniejszą drogą do zbawienia, ponieważ daje możliwość oderwania od świata i możliwość kontaktu z Bogiem poprzez modlitwę, kontemplację i praktyki ascetyczne. Pustynia jest miejscem ćwiczenia się w cnotach przez post, milczenie i modlitwę, jest także miejscem walki ze swymi wadami i z szatanem. Pustynia jest niezbędnym etapem dla tych, którzy chcą osiągnąć szczyty życia mistycznego.
Le but de cet article est de presenter la signification du desert dans la pensee spirituelle de Pierre Damien. Dans une premiere partie on a présenté une courte biografie de Pierre Damien qui a permis de mieux comprendre ses choix dans la vie spirituelle. Dans la deuxieme partie on a montre sa conception de la vie spirituelle qu’etait inspiree de la vie de son maitre spirituel - saint Romuald. Pierre Damien a distingué deux voies dans la vie monastique: la vie communautaire et la vie solitaire, érémitique. D'apres lui la vie communautaire est une sorte de préparatoire pour la vie solitaire. Dans une troisieme partie on a présente la valeur et l’importance de la vie érémitique et la difference entre la vie communautaire et la vie solitaire. Pierre Damien a souligne que le désert et la cellule est l'endroit idéal pour le moine qui veut atteindre la perfection dans la vie spirituelle. La vie au desert est la voie la plus sure pour atteindre le salut car elle nous separe du monde et elle donne des conditions plus favorables a la priêre, à la contemplation et aux pratiques ascétiqucs en union avec Dieu. Le desert est l'endroit ou on s’exerce dans les vertus par le jeune, le silence, et la priere, mais aussi un endroit de combat avec nos vices et avec Satan. Le desert est un passage indispensable pour ceux qui veulent atteindre le sommet dans la vie mystique.
The purpose of this article was to present the meaning of the desert in spiritual thought Peter Damian. In the first part we presented a short biography Peter Damian has provided insight choices in spiritual life. In the second part we showed his conception of the spiritual life that was inspired by the life of his spiritual master - St. Romuald. Peter Damian distinguished two ways in monastic life, community life and the solitary life, hermit. Community life is a kind of preparatory for the solitary life. In a third part we presented the value and importance of the hermit's life and the difference between community life and the solitary life. Peter Damian pointed out that the desert and the cell is the perfect place for the monk who wants to achieve perfection in the spiritual life. Life in the desert is the surest way to attain salvation because it separates us from the world and it gives more favorable conditions for prayer, contemplation and ascetic practices in union with God. The desert is the place where it is exercised in virtue by fasting, silence and prayer, but also a place of combat with vices and with Satan. The desert is a vital passage for those who want to reach the top in the mystical life.

This paper deals with the problem of the Burma-Korea relations. It starts from the intriguing fact that both Burma and Korea, despite not having much in common, have been called the Hermit Kingdoms. This paper asks whether this “hermit” similarity has had any effect on their relations and what the place of Korea in Burma’s foreign policy has been. After describing the hermit heritage in the Burmese and the Korean political cultures, this papers concludes that Korean issues have not been central to the Burmese policy. They form an important, though a secondary, dimension. As for the place of Korea(s) in Burma’s foreign policy, the answer is equally unimpressive. The political relations between Burma and both Korean states have not been strategic. Two events attracted the world’s attention to the Burmese-Korean relations – the assassination in Rangoon and Burma’s nuclear affair with North Korea – but both turned out to be mere incidents. North Korea – Burma relations stalled, or hibernated, after Burma started its reforms and opening up to the West in 2011. For the same reasons of reforms, however, Burma has become even more interesting for South Korea. Myanmar may become a place for massive South Korean investments soon. It is the economic dominance of South Korea that makes the Burma-Korea relations asymmetric. It’s a “normalized asymmetry”, however, one where both sides are confident of fulfi lling their basic interests and expectations of mutual benefits. This “normalized asymmetry” makes the Burma-South Korea relations bound to develop in the future.
