Opis:
The inevitable loss of post-industrial heritage is becoming an increasingly frequent phenomenon. Despite the successes in its protection, engineering monuments are still treated as second-class heritage, which makes rescue operations difficult. Often their scale and location contribute to making radical decisions based mainly on economic factors. The protection of the identity of the industrial heritage requires well-thought-out solutions embedded in the future in order to become a permanent record of the past. The article presents a case study of Île de Nantes as a good practice in preserving post-industrial heritage. The 337 ha Île de Nantes project is one of the largest urban projects in Europe, giving new use to the site of the former shipyard while respecting its past. The scale of the problem is very wide: from urban planning, through architecture, to sites that are postindustrial monuments.

This essay illustrates not only an initiative of yielding The European Heritage Label, but also the significance of that enterprise for the objects placed in the territory of Central-Eastern Europe. The cultural European Union project described in the article shows ambitious efforts of that institution in counscious creation of the own heritage. One of the aims of yielding The European Heritage Label is enforcement of effiliation with European Union among European citizens especially young people. In this context the important issue is the question of effectiveness of this enterprise.

Artykuł wprowadza w problematykę tożsamości osobowej podkreślając szczególnie rolę poszukiwania początku i punktu odniesienia. Analizy prac artystek działających na przełomie XX i XXI wieku (Louise Bourgeois, Kary Walker, Eleanor Antin, Marty Deskur i Joan Jonas) ukazują, jak sztuka przedstawia powracanie do własnego dziedzictwa biologicznego i kulturowego („archiwów”) oraz wyraża napięcie między reinterpretacją i reprojektowaniem w odniesieniu do tożsamości konstruowanej w oparciu o takie powracanie. Ostatecznie poetyckość reinterpretacji okazuje się podpowiedzią metafizycznego punktu odniesienia.
The article introduces the problem of personal identity studying in particular the role of searching the beginning and the reference point. An examination of the artists working at the turn of the century (Louise Bourgeois, Kara Walker, Eleanor Antin, Marty Deskur and Joan Jonas) presents how art shows return to personal biological and cultural heritage (“archive”) and expresses the tension between reinterpretation and re-projecting in the identity constructed on the basis of such return. Finally, poetic reinterpretation appears to suggest a metaphysical point of reference.

From an anthropological point of view, the elaboration of identity mechanisms (rooted in monuments and landscapes) can be deconstructed in order to understand the impact of cultural heritage upon inhabitants. This study, based on the French city of Grasse (French Riviera), demonstrates how cultural heritage is used in the creation of local identity and how it can impact social, cultural, economical and political fields. Cultural heritage is used here to understand identity strategies. It is established as a point of reference and a local marker. It legitimizes social order and validates local identity. This situation is not an exception in the area, and these cultural constructions can be seen in others touristic cities on the French Riviera.

Opis:
Man inhabits an ecological niche, creates a bond in society, settles down and manages the niche transforming it into the environment. In this process, he creates culture. In culture, he shapes the view of the environment, which he names nature. It is important to indicate that what we consider to be nature is created by a human. The environment is subject to changes due to human activities. Transformations of views about it are not their simple consequences. Nature is a cultural interpretation. As such, it is part of the heritage, or resource considered important in the construction of identity. The environment reacts to human activity in a way that views do not control. On the other hand, they influence interpretations, consciousness. In this sense, nature can become part of the national heritage. Nature played a special role after the partitions; along with the language it created another space of freedom. The Polish language referred to speaking and feelings focused on the ideal of the “country of childhood”. Regaining independence transferred images and feelings into the realm of myth, above all the borderland myth. Then urbanization and industrialization treated as a synonym of progress gave birth to a new form of longing for nature and opposition to its limitation through ownership. The revolution was supposed to give nature back to society and at the same time to subordinate it to the requirements of a planned economy. In free Poland, nature has been separated from the concepts and policies related to modernization. Natural heritage comes down to resources that can be commercialized. It leads to the stagnation of thinking about national identity. The author postulates to examine whether what we inherited is still a useful resource for the national community in constructing the necessary adaptations of Poland to global challenges.

Opis:
Bytom is a city located in Upper Silesia, in the southern part of Poland which after World War II found itself within the boundaries of Poland after several hundred years. For many centuries, the main function of the city has been metal-ore and hard coal mining, which considerably contributed to its historical identity. The over 800-year history is full of numerous social, economic and ethnic conflicts caused by frequent changes in the city’s political affiliation and frequent redefinitions of its identity. After the collapse of communism, during the political and economic transformation, there arose a need to determine a new development path, in particular a new perspective on the heritage from the times of German dominance and from the times of communism. The mining and heavy industries have already ceased to be the basis of Bytom’s identity. Taking account of these historical rationales, this article attempts to answer the question of whether, among a number of contradictions and conflicts, the urban community of today’s Bytom, heterogeneous in terms of its origin, will be able to generate a model of cultural identity and historical remembrance accepted by all. All these complex and at the same time contradictory processes have been discussed through the prism of their reflection in the urban space and examined by means of historical analysis and contemporary cartographic and photographic sources.

Opis:
Religious heritage is an important cultural resource for a city. First, cities are at the crossroads of conflicting trends in globalisation. Urban communities are looking for that which makes them universal and unique at the same time. Second, reflection on identity in relation to the heritage and history of a city reveals the multicultural past of Central and Eastern Europe, and shows an image of social change and transformation. Religious heritage plays, therefore, various roles. Places connected with religious identities have symbolic, sacred and artistic meanings. They construct a local universe of meaning; they are an important factor of the local narrative and customs, and they place it in the context of national, regional and ethnic traditions. Churches, temples, and cemeteries are also a sign of memory, this shows not only history but also the contemporary processes of remembering and forgetting. The city of Bielsko-Biała was a cultural and religious mosaic until 1945. Jewish, German and Polish cultures were meeting here everyday with diverse religious belonging and boundaries. Today, the heritage of its religious identity is recognized mainly via monuments, tourist attractions, and cultural events. Only occasionally is the religious heritage of the city analysed in the context of collective identities. Urban space still reflects the complexity of the relationships between religious, national, and regional identities. The purpose of the paper is to describe the variety of functions of religious heritage in a contemporary city on the example of Bielsko-Biała in Poland. The analysis will be based on demographic data from the national census of population, religious community documents, available sociological research outcomes, and historical and contemporary images of the city such as maps and plans, postcards and tourist brochures.

The need to redefi ne Australia has been particularly urgent in the recent two decades when the image of this antipodean society as almost a model multicultural one, craving for freedom and tolerance, was demolished by growing intolerance and nationalisms. In today’s world, torn by confl icts of interests, racial hatred and social divisions, the nineteenth-century concept of a nation and national ideology, which only apparently faded away in the era of the late twentieth-century globalisation, is now being given a new prominence not just by minor politicians who want to win the favour of their electorates but by surprisingly large sections of democratic, egalitarian societies as Australia and New Zealand.

Masurians in the East Podolia: Memory, Identity and HeritageThe theme of this article is specific identity and memory of the Polish population in the selected villages of Khmelnytskyi Raion of Ukraine, with the second most numerous Polish population in Ukraine. The specificity of this Polish population results from a long habitation in the same territory. From the moment they arrived on Podolia until their deportations to Kazakhstan and Siberia in the 1930s, this group did not migrate at all. The article is based on research conducted in three the so-called “Masurian” villages. The inhabitants of these areas are defined as Masurians – they are descendants of Polish peasants who settled therein the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The text shows the identity of the ethnic community of “Masurian” villages and the memory of their Polish peasant roots. Hundreds years of living together in one region and endogamy rules in force since the Second World War have contributed to the fact that these local communities have preserved memory of their Polish and peasant origin, as well as their specific dialect and religion. W tekście przedstawiono charakter tożsamości ludności wsi mazurskich, pamięć wspólnotową dotyczącą polskich i zarazem chłopskich korzeni grupy. Kilkusetletnie życie w jednym regionie, jak i obowiązująca do czasów II wojny światowej zasada endogamii spowodowały, że wspólnoty wsi mazurskich zachowały pamięć o swoim polskim i zarazem chłopskim pochodzeniu, gwarę i wyznanie.

This article is devoted to the analysis of new tendencies in the painting of Uzbekistan since the independence. The pivotal changes which have influenced the development of art process in the Republic, caused by refusal former ideological norms, restoration of historical and cultural continuity and traditional spirituality with nation ideals, conservative attitude to heritage, become apparent. Freedom of artistic expression has become a main principle in art. A new system of ideas comes, leading to the abandonment of past trends replaced by the interest to different areas of twentieth-century modernism. Appeal to the traditions of the people of culture stimulated the new interpretation and understanding of their own history, national and universal values at the present stage of their development, and intensified traditional and innovative artistic concept. The analysis of some pieces which is carried out by the author has shown that such tendencies as realistic, symbolic and metaphorical and conditional and decorative, connected with reference to mythopoetic heritage, to traditional and innovative art concepts developed in the painting of Uzbekistan. The principle of dynamic development in close contact with world art process, when traditions are preserved, encourages the development of major cultural achievements of the past and familiarizing with new modern forms.
