Opis:: Introduction. Medicinal plants are perfectly suited to interact with biological macromolecules like proteins and nucleic acids. All sources of natural products such as plants, microorganisms, animals, etc. are therefore biochemical potential. Aim. The goal was to present a typical plant often found in abandoned places, fields, meadows in the Podkarpacie region of Poland. Medicinal plants presented here were collected in Summer 2021 close to the city Jarosław. Material and methods. Plants collected for herbarium, immediately after harvest, are laid out between paper sheets that absorb moisture. Dried plants retain the shape of individual organs and usually also the colors. As the result of our collection, in this article are presented Papaver rhoeas L., Centaurea cyanus L., Capsella bursa – pastoris L., Taraxacum officinalle F.H., Wigg Coll and Lamium album L. Analysis of the literature. The desire to summarize information for future generations and to present the writings of the classical scholars to a wide audience was the major stimulations for presenting a most popular medicinal plants to the reader. The plants most often obtained for pharmaceutical purposes include: chamomile, fennel, St. John’s wort, nettle, mint, dandelion, yarrow, marshmallow, sage, foxglove, lemon balm, dandelion, rosehip, aloe, ginseng, and milk thistle. Conclusion. The history of plants collections is well documented.

Opis:: Jacob Breyne, who lived in Gdańsk in the 17th century, was one of the most important botanists in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was fascinated with the exotic flora and was also interested in the flora at home. Like many other botanists in Gdańsk in the 17th century, he planned to publish the work devoted to autochthonous plants of Royal Prussia and Kashubia, but his plans were interrupted by his death. In the collection of Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in Leiden there are preserved two of his horti sicci prepared correspondingly in 1659 and 1673, where specimens of indigenous plants from Gdańsk Pomerania were included. They are the oldest sources of this kind to be found in the territories of early modern Poland. The author of the article presents the botanic interests of Jacob Breyne in the Pomeranian local flora. The edition of the texts from the Leiden herbaria was enclosed.

Opis:: The main theme of the text is the wartime and postwar history of the area of the German Nazi extermination camp Treblinka II, seen from the perspective of the production of landscape – with a special focus on the identity aspect, i.e. the nationalization of nature and the naturalization of the nation. The argument refers to imaging conventions of nature and ethnographic photography, like the German Heimatphotographie and the Polish Fatherland Photography, that go along with landscape production. This paper also touches upon the issue of classification as the principle organizing the workings of the human mind as well as the uses made of classification in terms of cognition and identity – up to and including the deadly consequences thereof. Another crucial point of reference is the history of the herbarium as a form of organizing knowledge (Maria Sibylla Merian, Rosa Luxemburg, Szymon Syreński) and its connections with the visual arts (Krzysztof Jung, Alina Szapocznikow). The rich iconography illustrates the analyzed representation patterns, with particular focus on the axiosemiotics of Polish antisemitism, going back to its elitist forms in Jagiellonian Poland. The text summarizes fifteen years of the author’s work on Herbarium, a photographic project carried out on the site of the former German Nazi extermination camp Treblinka II.
Osnową tekstu jest wojenna i powojenna historia terenu niemieckiego nazistowskiego obozu zagłady Treblinka II z perspektywy produkcji krajobrazu – ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem aspektu tożsamościowego, czyli unarodowienia natury i naturalizacji narodu. Wywód odnosi się do towarzyszących tej produkcji konwencji obrazowania w fotografii przyrodniczej i krajoznawczej, takich jak niemiecka Heimatphotographie i polska fotografia ojczysta. Poruszone zostało też zagadnienie klasyfikacji jako zasady funkcjonowania ludzkiego umysłu wraz z jej zastosowaniami poznawczymi oraz/lub tożsamościowymi – do morderczych konsekwencji włącznie. Ważny punkt odniesienia stanowi ponadto historia zielnika jako formy organizacji wiedzy (Maria Sibylla Merian, Róża Luksemburg, Szymon Syreński) oraz jej związki ze w sztukami wizualnymi (Krzysztof Jung, Alina Szapocznikow). Bogaty materiał ilustracyjny odnosi się do analizowanych sposobów reprezentacji ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem aksjosemiotyki polskiego antysemityzmu, sięgając do jego elitarnych form w Polsce Jagiellonów. Tekst podsumowuje piętnaście lat pracy autorki nad projektem fotograficznym Zielnik na terenie byłego niemieckiego nazistowskiego obozu zagłady Żydów Treblinka II.

Opis:: Józef Rostafiński w 1883 r. wystosował ankietę, zwaną Odezwą, której celem było zbadanie tradycji używania roślin wśród ludu żyjącego na terytorium trzech zaborów Pierwszej Rzeczpospolitej. Rostafiński chciał uzyskać dzięki temu materiał źródłowy dotyczący zwyczajów stosowania ziół w kuchni, obrzędach i medycynie ludowej. Na podstawie uzyskanych danych wydawał publikacje naukowe. Archiwalne odpowiedzi na Odezwę Rostafińskiego w dużej części zostały zachowane w zbiorze Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Natomiast część uznawano za zaginioną. W 2014 r. zostały one odnalezione w dokumentach po prof. Tadeuszu Wilczyńskim ze Lwowa. W odnalezionych archiwaliach Rostafińskiego znajdują się odpowiedzi związane z Odezwą oraz inne dokumenty np.: listy: ks. Pawła Smolikowskiego CR, Jana Karłowicza, które zostaną zasygnalizowane w artykule.
In 1883, Józef Rostafiński launched a questionnaire, called the Appeal (Odezwa), the objective of which was to look into the tradition of using plants among the people living in the three territories of the First Polish Commonwealth annexed in the partitions. Thereby, Rostafiński wanted to obtain source material concerning the customs related to the use of herbs in cooking, rituals and folk medicine. Based on the data obtained, he published scientific works. The archival responses to Rostafiński’s Appeal were largely preserved in the collection of the Jagiellonian University. However, a portion was considered lost. In 2014, they were found among the documents left by Prof. Tadeusz Wilczyński of Lviv. Among the recovered archives of Rostafiński there are responses to the Appeal as well as other documents, e.g. letters by Fr. Paweł Smolikowski CR and Jan Karłowicz, which will be mentioned in the paper.

Opis:: The subject of the article is “Zielnik herbarzem z języka łacińskiego zowią…” (In English: “Herbarium”) by Szymon Syreński, also known as Syrenius, published in 1613 by the printing house of Bazyli Skalski. The thoughts of the eminent Polish botanist and physician presented in this work concern two issues: the expression of the author's attitude towards plant witchcraft (love and protective magic) and the assessment of people (alchemists, witch doctors, traders) dealing with secret practices in which particular species were used. The theses of the author were discussed having taken into account the position of Renaissance medicine and the role of natural and demonic magic in the life of society at that time. The important context for the analyses conducted herein is also the presentation of the work of Syrenius juxtaposed with other literary texts and treatises from the 16th and 17th centuries, the authors of which dealt with similar issues (incl. “Czarownica powołana or Postępek prawa czartowskiego przeciw narodowi ludzkiemu”). The article is based on the researches of literary scholars, general and medicine historians as well as anthropologists.
