Opis:
The article is devoted to the problem of human relationships with special attention paid to the experience of helplessness, powerlessness and social anxiety in contacts with other people. The problem is described from the existential-psychological and social-cultural perspective. At first the author presents the essence and reasons for feeling helpless and anxious in the psychological context. Then various aspects of human alienation in contemporary culture are enumerated. In the second part of the article the author discusses the category of usefulness and utility in thinking about oneself and other people, the alienation of language and loss of the so-called “individual initiative”. Theoretical considerations have been supplemented with the results of the author’s own research. At the end of the article the author indicates the role of education in preventing the development of helplessness among young people.

Opis:
The present research explores the role of repetitive thought (RT) in developing control deprivation deficits. The two main RT theories lead to diverging predictions. The response style theory suggests that RT in reaction to distress leads to negative effects in terms of emotional and cognitive functioning. However, the theory of Marin and Tesser and its elaboration by Watkins, suggest that the effects of RT depend on its form and that individuals who are not depression-prone usually adopt the constructive form of RT that leads to positive effects. To test which of these predictions is true for control deprivation situation, two experimental studies were conducted. Participants after control deprivation were induced RT or distraction, followed by the measurement of their emotional and cognitive functioning. The results suggest that repetitive thought reduces both emotional and cognitive helplessness deficits and has no effect in no control deprivation condition. This supports the theory of Martin and Tesser and its elaboration by Watkins.

Opis:
The article focuses on the links between attributional style (regarded as personal trait) and succeeding, in the situation of previous failure. The attempts of research and describing these mechanisms derive from the researches of learned helplessness. To be precise from the Attributional Helplessness Model of Abramson, Seligman i Teasdale. The aim of this article is attempt to explain the lack of direct proofs between attributional styles and learned helpless arising whereas there are reliable proofs between particular attributional styles and succeeding. The article begins with survey of the most important conceptions of helplessness. Then some researches of links between succeeding and attributional styles were described. Finally the attempt of explaining the lack of direct proofs between attributional styles and learned helpless is proposed. This explanation is based on distinguishing between the situation when a lack of control is experienced (helplessness training) and the situation of experiencing single failure. The article ends with the proposal of the experiment which is planed to be a empirical verification hypothesis that individual attributional styles have relevant impact on the motivation and succeeding in the situation of previous failure.

Człowiek traci wówczas poczucie przyjemności (anhedonia) i sensu życia. Staje się bezradny, bezsilny i apatyczny. Towarzyszą temu liczne objawy fizyczne, takie jak: ból głowy, brak apetytu, zaburzenia snu. Cel pracy. Przedstawienie realizacji pielęgniarskiego planu terapii pacjenta z depresją przebywającego na oddziale psychiatrycznym. Materiał i metody. Opis przypadku. Sześćdziesięciodwuletni pacjent przyjęty do Szpitala Psychiatrycznego w Toszku, z rozpoznaniem epizodu depresyjnego. Wnioski. Zamierzone cele procesu pielęgnowania zostały osiągnięte. Stan psychiczny chorego poprawił się. Został wypisany do domu bez zamiarów i myśli suicydalnych. Wzmocnił swoje poczucie wartości. Chętnie nawiązywał kontakt z pacjentami, personelem i rodziną. Brał udział w zajęciach terapeutycznych. Pomagał w pracach na oddziale.
Introduction. every human has experienced some disillusionments connected with personal or professional life. We react by being miserable, anxious or we withdraw from regular, every day activity. Soon afterwards our mood comes back to its normal state and we return to a normal life functioning. There are, however, some situations when the depression and isolation last longer. The human looses the sense of pleasure (anhedonia) and the sense of life. The person becomes helpless and apathetic. The feelings are additionally accompanied by some physical complaints such as headache, loss of appetite and sleeping disorders. Aim.The presentation of the implementation of a nursing plan for a patient suffering from depression in a psychiatric ward. Material and methods. The data concerning the patient has been completed through an interview with the patient in whom the depression was diagnosed. For the research a questionnaire containing questions prepared earlier was worked out. The information about the patient and his family was obtained though observations and documents’ analysis. Case description. The patient was a 62-year-old man admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with depression. He has been hospitalized for the fourth time and treated for 10 years so far. He has expressed his assent to be treated. He was relegated to the hospital by a mental health clinic because of increasing fear, thinking of death, insomnia and suicidal thoughts. At the beginning, the patient was miserable, scared, tired, drowsy and slowed. For the first few days he refused eating and drank only little amounts of liquids. He expressed verbally his suicidal thoughts. He spent most of the time in bed and was not interested in the ward life at all. He did not stay in contact either with other patients or the staff. He isolated himself from the environment and did not care for his physical appearance. Conclusions. The aims stated in the nursing process have been achieved. The patient’s mental state improved and he was discharged from the hospital without suicidal intentions. He strengthened his self-esteem and started contacting other patients, the staff and the family. He took part in therapeutic activities and helped on the ward.

Opis:
Previous studies reported that mental health and emotion regulation strategies deteriorated in the refugee sample. The main goal of the study was to analyze the mediation effect of emotion regulation strategies as expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal between resilience to helplessness – depression and flourishing. The second aim was to determine to what extent emotion regulation strategies and resilience to helplessness-depression predicted flourishing. Forty-seven Syrian refugees, aged 18-64, who were settled in Istanbul fulfilled the coping competence questionnaire (CCQ), the flourishing scale, and the emotion regulation questionnaire (ERQ). The serial mediation analysis indicated that expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal had a significant indirect mediating effect between resilience to helplessness-depression and flourishing. Multiple regression analysis showed that expressive suppression was a negative predictor of flourishing. However, both cognitive reappraisal and resilience to helplessness – depression were positive predictors of flourishing. Moreover, ERQ, flourishing, and CCQ scales showed good internal reliability consistency scores in the refugee group. The study suggested that improvement in emotion regulation strategies may be a helpful strategy in the therapeutic setting.

Learning in unknown circumstances is a great challenge for young people, particularly those who lack the ability to regulate their emotions. This text presents the results of research on the image of the life of students in higher grades of primary school, measured by the sense of self-efficacy and the sense of helplessness. The research was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic among 303 students. It was found that (1) students rather express their belief in their own effectiveness (agency), and, at the same time, (2) half of the students indicated the feeling of helplessness; (3) helplessness is significantly higher among girls; (4) in the case of girls, there is a clear and strong negative relation between the sense of effectiveness and the helplessness.

Opis:
In this research paper the Game of Thrones video game is juxtaposed with the original book and TV series in order to investigate the differences in failures experienced by the characters, primarily in the context of its fairness. J. Juul's book from 2013 serves as a main source of theoretical framework. It is argued that by misinforming the player about their influence on the plot, the game causes the player to develop learned helplessness, which, in turn, causes a lack of interest and lowered enjoyment.
