    Opis:
    A comparative analysis was made for different measures of location and variation in height increment of the main stem of the mature black alder from the north−eastern region (N) and two southern regions (S1 and S2) of Poland. Correlation was found between annual height increment and tree age and height, as well as the number of the nodes along the shoot and the length of the internode. It was demonstrated that the trees producing long shoots in a given year would produce long shoots also in the successive years.

    Opis:
    On the basis of the research on relationships between the height growth and different stand characteristics carried out on the material collected from 100 spruce stands three empirical equations for determining the height growth of stands were proposed. The most precise equation based on the average values of dbh increment, dbh and stand height allows to estimate the height increment with the average error equalling ±17.0%.

    Article presents the assessment of growth and survival of silver fir seedlings planted under stand canopies constituted by common beech, European larch, Norway spruce, Scots pine and silver birch. Measurements were carried out in Karkonoski National Park (SW Poland) in 2001 and 2011. The tallest trees were growing under the canopy of larch both in 2001 and 2011.

    Opis:
    The study focused primarily on the analysis of the periodic annual and mean annual increment and on the recognition of the growth phases for beech growing in the lower storey of beech−pine stands. The empirical material collected from 12 beech−pine stands located in the territory of the Miłomłyn and Stare Jabłonki Forest Districts was used for the study. The height increment of the beech trees from the second storey of beech−pine stands under study culminated earlier than the height increment of the beech trees from pure, one−storied stands. The beech trees growing in the second storey are also characterised by a shorter juvenile phase.

    The paper is the analysis of annual height increments in three−year−old silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) seedlings planted under the canopies of Norway spruce, common beech, Scots pine, European larch and common birch stands in the Karkonosze National Park. The objective of the research was to define the time span after which seedlings of silver fir (Abies alba Mill,) adapted to light conditions under the crowns of different tree species. The comparison of annual height increments of seedlings and the analysis of variance of light conditions permitted to preliminary assess the effect of individual species forming the canopy on the height response of regeneration.

    Opis:
    The study presents the results of an analysis of the pine tree growth increments (height increment, dbh increment, basal area increment and volume increment) for a 5-year period. The study involved Scots pine trees of Kraft's class 1, 2 and 3 (dominant stand) in stands of different age classes (II, III, V) growing in fresh mixed coniferous (BMoew) and fresh coniferous (Boew) forest habitats. The multivariate analysis of variance was performed to assess the statistical significance of age and dominance of trees within a stand on their increment. The dominance position was classified for each tree using Kraft's criteria. The following characteristics were also measured: dbh of the trunk in two directions (N-S and W-E), and crown projection area on the basis of the characteristic tree crown points, projected using of a crown projector, characteristic points in tree crowns (7 to 14 on average). The actual height was determined after trees were felled. The following measurements of the single tree growing space were selected and determined: crown projection area – pk (m2), crown diameter – dk (m), Seebach's growth space number – dk / d1. 3 , crown projection area to basal area ratio –d d k 2 1 3 / 2. , crown deflection coefficient –d h k / , single tree space ppd=pk·h (m3). We assessed the strength of the relationships between tree growth parameters and tree growth space, crown length, relative crown length and slenderness. Both the age and dominance position of trees within the stand affected the growth increments. The strongest correlation among measured traits was between the 5-year volume increment and decreasing slenderness.

    The European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) belongs to the group of trees characterised by fast height growth in the juvenile phase of its development. The paper describes the length and variation of height growth phases and the age at which the current and average height increments culminate. The empirical material comprised 178 cut trees that were analysed for their height growth. The trees were collected from the larch stands located in different regions of Poland.

    In the study the formation of the dbh increment in spruce stands throughout their whole life in the Skrzyczne massif in the Beskidy Zachodnie Mountains has been presented. This increment can be illustrated by means of an exponential function according to the following formula: Zr=exp(a + b·ln(w)+c·ln2(w)), regardless of the altitude above see level at which trees grow. This altitude however has an effect on the value of function parameters.

    Opis:
    The study presents the analysis of the increment of tree diameter at the breast height in connection with two variants of the method of assessment the damage to Norway spruce stands. Variants utilise different assessment criteria. The first one is based on the tree's defoliation, the other one – on the damage index W that links defoliation, condition of the tree−top and branching in the middle part of the crown. Detected relations between damage criteria and type of the increment reaction show that index W characterises the damage to trees and stands better than feature A (defoliation). Therefore, method of assessment the damage to trees and stands based on this parameter is suggested for utilisation in the forestry practice.

    Opis:
    The objective of the research was to determine the relationship between the dimensions and increment of the aboveground (easy to determine) and the belowground biomass of fir undergrowth in different shelter conditions. In the examined samples, the length of taproots (DKp) up to the age of 30 was dependent on its increment during the first three years of development. Later years saw an intensified growth of taproots. However, the differences from the first years of growth did not compensate for the differences in the first years. Reduced DKp growth was observed in the group of seedlings incrementing to a height of less than 4 cm. The height increment of fir undergrowth at about 20 years of age should not be less than 20 cm. The growth of roots and aboveground parts depends on other factors. The growth of roots was related to the growth of aboveground parts only to a small degree. Under the conditions of suppression, the extremely poor height increment of firs was compensated by the development of the aboveground biomass. With a moderate height increment (sufficient light availability) root growth was more intense. No clear relationship was found between the development of taproots and horizontal roots.
