Opis:
Objectives To identify blood lead predictors and the prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in firearm users of public security in Mexico. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was performed on 65 males. We obtained socio-occupational data and determined venous blood lead (blood (B), lead (Pb) – BPb), as well as neuropsychiatric symptoms using the Q-16 questionnaire. A multiple linear regression model was constructed to assess determinants of BPb. Results The mean age in the study group was 34.8 years (standard deviation (SD) = 6.9, range: 21–60); the mean number of years spent in the company amounted to 14 years (SD = 8.5, range: 1–48). Twenty percent of the respondents (N = 13) used leaded glazed clay pottery (lead (Pb), glazed (G), and clay pottery (C) – PbGC) in the kitchen. During practice they fired a mean of 72 shots (SD = 60, range: 20–250), and during their whole duration of employment 5483 shots (SD = 8322.5, range: 200–50 000). The mean BPb was 7.6 μg/dl (SD = 6.8, range: 2.7–51.7). Two caretakers from the firing range had 29.6 μg/dl and 51.7 μg/dl BPb. The subjects who had shooting practice sessions ≥ 12 times a year reported a greater percentage of miscarriages in their partners (24% vs. 0%). Twelve percent of the respondents showed an increase in neuropsychiatric symptoms. The BPb multiple linear regression model explained R² = 44.15%, as follows: those who had ≥ 12 practice sessions per year – β = 0.5339 and those who used PbGC – β = 0.3651. Conclusions Using firearms and PbGC contributes to the increased BPb in the studied personnel. The determinants of BPb were: shooting practices >12 times a year and using PbGC. Blood lead concentrations reported in the study, despite being low, are a health risk, as evidenced by the prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Introduction and aim. Anemia remains a leading contributor to years lived with disability (YLDs), being responsible for 50.3 million (5.82%) YLDs worldwide and 19.3 million (12.03%) YLDs in India, respectively. Results of the National Family Health Survey 2019-2021 (NFHS-5) suggest a high burden of anemia in India among women of reproductive age and children aged 6-59 months at the national level (57%, 67.1%), and in the state of Bihar, India (63.5%, 69.4%). Iron deficiency is the leading cause, accounting for more than half the cases. Anemia bodes harmful implications for both the mother and child, with long-lasting consequences for the latter. Anemia control programs have yielded little benefit despite efforts stretching over five decades. This narrative review aims to highlight the burden of anemia and the probable factors behind it among under-5 children and women of reproductive age in the Indian state of Bihar. Material and methods. The paper is a narrative review. The following databases were used to search and select literature: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. In addition, the websites of relevant government departments and national health programs were searched for pertinent material. Analysis of the literature. A multitude of reasons seem to be behind the unabated high prevalence in Bihar: low socioeconomic status, gender disparities, traditional customs and practices, food insecurity, lack of diverse diets, poor consumption, and no adherence to iron and folic acid (IFA) supplements, groundwater contamination with arsenic and fluoride, and supply chain mismanagement, all playing roles of varying degree. Conclusion. An all-encompassing approach and not merely the provision of IFA supplements are necessary to unravel the intricate web of factors that lead to anemia.

Opis:
The present study was initiated to understand the accumulation of toxic heavy metals in sediments of Bhavan's College Lake of Andheri, Mumbai. The study was performed for a period of one year starting from June 2011 to May 2012 to quantify the toxic heavy metals like Cu, Pb, Cr, Ni, Fe, Hg, As and Cd by atomic absorption spectroscopy technique coupled with cold vapour technique (for Hg analysis) and hydride generation technique(for As analysis). It was observed that the yearly average concentrations of these heavy metals in lake sediments were 0.53, 0.25, 0.42, 0.43, 4.6, 0.14, 0.12 and 0.11 ppm respectively which were above the WHO limits for aquatic life and CPCB limits for inland surface water. These heavy metals accumulated in lake sediments may enter the water thereby creating threat to aquatic life. They may enter the food chain through biomagnifications and may create adverse effect on human health. It is expected that in addition to the water analysis which is practiced for years, sediment analysis performed in the present investigation will help in evaluating quality of the total ecosystem of the lake. It will also provide environmentally significant information about natural and anthropogenic influence on the water body.

Opis:
Many etiologies are held accountable for nasal septum perforations. Topical nasal drug usage, previous surgeries, trauma, nose picking, squamous cell carcinoma, some rheumatological disorders such as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener granulomatosis), some infectious diseases such as syphilis and leprosy are among the causes of the perforations. Occupational heavy metal exposures by inhalation rarely may also cause nasal septum perforation. Here, we present a 29-year-old patient without any known diseases, who is a worker at a metallic coating and nickel-plating factory, referred for investigation of his nasal cartilage septum perforation from an otorhinolaryngology clinic. The patient questioning, physical examination and laboratory assessment about rheumatic and infectious diseases were negative. There was a metallic smell in the breath during the physical examination. The analysis showed serum nickel level at 31 μg/l and urine nickel at 18 μg/l (84.11 μg/g creatinine). Other possible serum and urine heavy metal levels were within normal ranges. Nickel exposure is usually together with other heavy metals (chromium or cadmium), it is rarely alone. Nickel ingested by inhalation usually leads to respiratory problems such as reduced olfactory acuity, ulcers, septum perforation or tumors of the nasal sinuses. This case demonstrates the importance of occupational anamnesis and awareness of diagnosis. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(6):963–967

W warunkach laboratoryjnych badano wpływ soli chromu, ołowiu i miedzi na wagę grzybni wybranych grzybów glebowych: Mucor mucedo, Penicillium claviforme, Alternaria alernata, Trichothecium roseum, Trichocladium aspenim, Aspergillus niger, Metarrhizium flavoviride. Wyniki badań wskazują, że grzyby glebowe wykazywały się zróżnicowaną reakcją na wprowadzone do podłoża sole metali ciężkich. Działanie ich zależało od gatunku grzyba, rodzaju metalu i jego stężenia. Spośród badanych soli metali ciężkich najmniej toksyczny w stosunku do masy grzybni okazał się Pb(NO₃)₂ wnoszony nawet w dużych stężeniach. Największe spadki masy grzybni zaobserwowano pod wpływem związku chromu i miedzi.
Effect of chrome, lead and copper on the weight of spawn of some soil fungi: Mucor mucedo, Penicillium claviforme, Alternaria alernata, Trichothecium roseum, Trichocladium asperum, Aspergillus niger, Metarrhizium flavoviride were investigated under the laboratory condition. The results of investigations show that soil fungi produced diverse reaction to the salts of heavy metals introduced to the substratum. Out of the investigated salts of heavy metals the least toxic in relation to the spawn sige was Pb(NO₃)₂ introduced even in high concentrations. The biggest decrease of the spawn weight were observed under the influence of chromium and copper compounds.

The effect of intensive irrigation with wastewater on the zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) concentration in soil solution was investigated. The experiment was parallel conducted on two soil profiles. The soil microcosms were watered with purified wastewater and purified wastewater with an the addition of zinc and cadmium. The results indicate clearly that neither intensive overhead irrigation of the soil nor its flooding with these wastewater and exceeded sorptive capacity. The application of treated wastewater and wastewater with heavy metals addition did not appear to pose a threat to the natural environment. In all the cases under analysis, zinc and cadmium concentrations in the soil solution were several-fold lower than the permissible levels.

Opis:
Landscape plantations are significantly water demanding in many parts of the world, particularly in dry regions. Adequate water supply is the main limiting factor behind landscape development, maintenance and beauty in such environments. On the other hand, monitoring the growth response of ornamental and landscape plants to irrigation water containing heavy metals can be useful in management and application of municipal wastewaters to these plantations instead of application in edible vegetable crops production, which is common in many urban areas. In the present study, one year old seedlings of Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum) were irrigated for two years with water containing 0, 15 or 30 mg L–1 of lead (Pb) in absence or presence of cadmium (0 or 5 mg L–1) in a factorial design, and under greenhouse conditions. Heavy metal treatments had no significant effect on leaf SPAD value; however, plants treated with Pb15Cd0 combination had significantly higher SPAD value than Pb30Cd5 combination that showed the lowest leaf SPAD value. Increasing the lead and cadmium levels of irrigation water increased the number of chlorotic and necrotic leaves of plant than control, whereas it reduced the average leaf area and new shoot growth. The control plants or plants treated with lower level of heavy metals showed the highest leaf area and new shoot growth. Leaf photosynthesis rate was significantly reduced in all heavy metal treated plants than control plants, as the lowest amount was in Pb30Cd5 combination treatment. All heavy metal treatments showed higher leaf soluble carbohydrates and proline content than in control plants. Leaf soluble carbohydrates were highest in Pb30Cd0 and Pb30Cd5 treatments, and leaf proline was highest in Pb30Cd5 and Pb15Cd5 treatments. The results indicate that Judas tree is a relatively tolerant species to high concentrations of Pb and Cd in root medium added through the irrigation water, and long term dual application of these heavy metals can have additive harmful effects on plant growth.

The concentrations of mercury in the hair of workers employed in the fluorescent tubes plant in Warsaw were determined and compared with the results obtained in our previous studies in the years 1970/1980. Total mercury in the hair was analysed by means of flameless atomic absorption spectrometry. The average mercury concentrations in the non-exposed population was at a similar level (0.17 µg/g) as in the results obtained in 1970/80. The average concentrations of total mercury in the hair of exposed subjects were approximately 30 times lower than in the years 1970/80 and ranged from 0.38 to 1.42 µg/g. This substantial reduction in Hg concentration in the hair of exposed people was due to improvements in the technological process.

Oznaczono Cd, Hg, Pb, Cu i Zn w próbkach grzybów jadalnych dziko rosnących pozyskanych w latach 1990-91 z sześciu rejonów Polski.
The amount of lead, cadmium, copper, zinc and mercury has been determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy in 96 samples of edible mushrooms, growing wild fresh edible fungus and dried (Boletus scaber, ceps) mushrooms, acquired from 6 regions in Poland: zielonogórskie, toruńskie, ostrołęckie, radomskie, warszawskie and lubelskie in 1990 and 1991. The level was found to be higher than that allowed by the polish standard PN-89/A-78510 Mushroom Processed Foods. Dried mushrooms and other legal acts eg. Instruction of the Ministry of Health § Social Welfare of 12th November 1990, the content of zinc in dried mushrooms (all samples) and in fresh edible fungus from the zielonogórski and toruński region. The content of copper in fresh edible fungus did not usually correspond with the requirements, whereas in the dried mushrooms (Boletus scaber, ceps) it exceeded the level only insignificantly in individual samples (average from studied regions was found to be within limits). The content of lead in dried mushrooms complied with the requirements of the standard, except for samples of ceps from zielonogórski region, where it insignificantly exceeded the allowed level of 2.0 mg/kg. The average content of zinc and copper in dried mushrooms did not exceed the allowed levels. The levels of mercury determined in the studied samples do not cause any excitement in light of the FAO/WHO agreements. A high level of contamination with cadmium was noted in all studied samples, being 2.5 times higher in edible fungus, 6-8 times higher in Boletus scaber and 19-23 times higher in dried ceps. This fact requires attention of sanitary services, although it should be stated that mushrooms are not the basic nutritional group, and thus their participation in the overall intake of metals in consummated foods is insignificant.
