Opis:
A thermal wave skin model incorporating surface heat flux from a skin simulant sensor is developed to characterize the thermal performance of heat resistant fabrics covering the skin simulant sensor. Comparisons of time to 2nd-degree skin burn and temperature elevation of skin beneath a layer of fabric between the Pennes’ equation and the newly developed thermal wave skin model are performed in this research. Results of tolerance time from the Stoll criterion method are also compared with those from 2 skin models in a thermal protective performance calorimeter. It is concluded that the thermal properties of heat resistant fabrics can be characterized more precisely than previously.

The net longwave radiation flux LW↑↓ in the Baltic Sea in 2001 has been subjected to spatial and temporal analysis. Maps of the mean monthly LW↑↓ over the Baltic were drawn using the new semi-empirical formula for the Baltic Sea (Zapadka et al. 2007). The input data for the formula, such as sea surface and air temperatures, and cloud cover, were obtained from the Tiros N/NOAA and METEOSAT 7 satellites and from the UMPLfo recast model (see http://meteo.icm.edu.pl). The mean annual LW↑↓ for 2001 was estimated at 63 W m−2 and compared with available data from other sources. The monthly maps of the net flux LW↑↓ over the Baltic show that the total values reach a minimum (LW↑↓≈50 W m−2) in April, September, October and a maximum (LW↑↓≈80 W m−2) in November. The statistical error of daily maps, on which the monthly maps were based, is no more than 18 W m−2.

Opis:
Heat waves were analysed on the basis of maximum daily temperature from 24 meteorological stations in Poland. Heat waves are defined as the longest continuous period during which Tmax (daily maximum air temperature) is equal to or higher than 30°C in at least three days, the mean Tmax during the whole heat wave is equal or higher than 30°C and Tmax does not drop below 25°C during the whole period of heat wave duration. Heat waves occur in Poland from April to September with their maximums in July and August. Four-day-long heat waves are most frequent but the longest one lasted 31 days. The most persistent heat waves were in 1994 and 2015. An increasing trend in heat wave frequency and intensity is observed in Poland, however the increase is statistically significant at only about 60% of analysed stations. Four synoptic patterns favouring heat waves have been distinguished. A strong high over the Azores accompanies all of them, as well as slightly higher than normal pressure over Central Europe – this causes calm and sunny weather over Poland. Strong blocking appears over the North Atlantic during heat wave events, proofing that the development of strong heat waves in Poland is related to large scale circulation and that they are not of local origin. The analysis of the impact of soil moisture in months leading up to the development of heat waves should be the next step in analysis.

Opis:
Under warming climates, heat waves (HWs) have occurred in increasing intensity in Europe. Also, public interest towards HWs has considerably increased over the last decades. The paper discusses the manifestations of the summer 2014 HW and simultaneously occurring coastal upwelling (CU) events in the Gulf of Finland. Caused by an anticyclonic weather pattern and persisting easterly winds, CUs evolved along the southern coast of the Gulf in four episodes from June to August. Based on data from coastal weather stations, 115 days-long measurements with a Recording Doppler Current Profiler (RDCP) oceanographic complex and sea surface temperature (SST) satellite images, the partly opposing impacts of these events are analysed. Occurring on the background of a marine HW (up to 26°C), the CU-forced SST variations reached about 20 degrees. At the 10 m deep RDCP mooring location, a drop from 21.5 to 2.9°C occurred within 60 hours. Salinity varied between 3.6 and 6.2 and an alongshore coastal jet was observed; the statistically preferred westerly current frequently flowed against the wind. Locally, the cooling effect of the CUs occasionally mitigated the overheating effects by the HWs both in the sea and on the marine-land boundary. However, in the elongated channel-like Gulf of Finland, upwelling at one coast is usually paired with downwelling at the opposite coast, and simultaneously or subsequently occurring HWs and CUs effectively contribute to heat transfer from the atmosphere to the water mass. Rising extremes of HWs and rapid variations by CUs may put the ecosystems under increasing stress.

Heat and cold waves in Warsaw (the Okęcie district) have been determined determined basing on daily average air temperature values in Warsaw (the Okęcie district), measured for 60 years between 1951 and 2010. Air temperature cycles, i.e. periods, amplitudes and phases have been determined by means of a sinusoidal regression method. Especially worth noting are 15 to 18-day long cycles of air temperature in given months (e.g. 16-day long cycles during 6 months: March, April, May, August, September, and October). Heat and cold waves result from interferences of cycles whose duration ranges from several to teen days of daily temperature values, and long-term cycles of average annual temperature.

Opis:
Observed basic meteorological quantities, heat and radiation fluxes from three different measurement stations in the Baltic Sea are compared with model data of the coupled sea-ice-ocean model BSIOM in order to evaluate the atmospheric forcing, corresponding surface fluxes and the sea surface response. Observational data weremade available from the BASIS winter campaigns in 1998 and 2001 as well as from the r/v ‘Alkor’ cruise in June 2001. Simulated fluxes were calculated from prescribed atmospheric forcing provided from the SMHI meteorological database and modelled sea surface temperatures. The comparison of these fluxes with observations demonstrates a strong correlation, even though mean differences in sensible heat fluxes range from 4 to 12 W m−2 in winter and −25 W m−2 in the June experiment. Differences in latent heat fluxes range from −10 to 23 W m−2. The short-wave radiation flux used as model forcing is on average 15 W m−2 less than the corresponding observations for the winter experiments and 40 W m−2 for the June experiment. Differences in net long-wave radiation fluxes range from −5 to 12W m−2 in winter and −62W m−2 for the June experiment. The correspondence between measured and calculated momentum fluxes is very high, which confirms the usability of our model component for calculating surface winds and wind stresses from the atmospheric surface pressure.

Opis:
Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between high air temperatures and occupational injuries (OIs) occurred during the summer seasons 2000–2013 in agricultural workers from the Autonomous Province of Trento (APT), North-Eastern Italy. Material and Methods Data about OIs for the APT from 2000 to 2013 occurring during the warm season (N = 7325) was provided by the National Institute of Insurance for Occupational Illness and Injury. Daily average and daily maximum temperatures values for the specific geographical site of events were retrieved. Daily temperatures were then assessed in 3 time lags: for the day of the event (lag 0), and for the previous 24 h (lag 1) and 48 h (lag 2). Daily temperatures were then categorized in 3 exposure groups (< 75th, 75–95th and > 95th percentiles). The risk of OIs was assessed as odds ratio (OR) calculated through a Poisson regression model controlled for age, sex, ethnicity and time period, and assuming OI rates for days on which temperature was comprised in < 75th percentile exposure groups as the referent ones. Results Estimated incidence of OIs during the study period was 3.4±2.3 events/day. The peak of work-related accidents occurred on days characterized by severe thermal conditions, and in particular during heat waves (incidence rate ratio = 1.09, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02–1.17, p = 0.0165). Days having temperatures higher than 95th percentile, assessed as daily average, both on current days (OR = 1.119, 95% CI: 1.008–1.242) and in lag 1 (OR = 1.125, 95% CI: 1.013–1.249), as well as daily maximum temperatures, were at the highest risk of work-related injuries (OR = 1.144, 95% CI: 1.029–1.272). Conclusions In conclusion, presented findings recommend policymakers to develop appropriate warning/alert systems for agricultural workers regarding high environmental temperatures. Opis:
The stability of micropolar fluid flow in a channel under the influence of heat function, magnetic field and radiation was investigated. Using the similarity solution and non-dimensionalizing, the governing partial differential equations (PDEs) where transformed to a set of non-linear differential equations (ODEs). We therefore perturbed the system and determined the stability of the system. Wolfram 9 software (Mathematica) was used to analyze the various stability effect of the material parameters on the fluid flow. The graphical results reflects the expected physical behavior of the flow configuration under consideration. The study reveals that the Prandtl (Pr), wave (a), Radiation (R) and heat function parameters at a certain critical value of the wave number hastens the onset of stability. While the Electroconductivity (σ), Magnetic field (M), Micropolar (K) and Microrotational (λ) parameters delays the onset of stability. The result are in agreement with the works of other literature sited.

This paper introduces a novel form of the Adomian decomposition (ADM) method for solving fractional-order heat-like and wave-like equations with starting and boundary value problems. The derivations are provided in the sense of Caputo. In order to help understanding, the generalised formulation of the current approach is provided. Several numerical examples of fractional-order diffusion-wave equations (FDWEs) are solved using the suggested method in this context. In addition to examining the applicability of the suggested method to the solving of fractional-order heat-like and wave-like equations, a graphical depiction of the solutions to three instructive cases was constructed. Solution graphs were arrived at for integer and fractional-order problems. The derived and exact solutions to integer-order problems were found to be in excellent agreement. The subject of the present research endeavour is the convergence of fractional-order solutions. This strategy is considered to be the most successful way of addressing fractional-order initial-boundary value issues in science and engineering. This strategy is presented here.

In this paper, effects of non-Fourier thermal wave interactions in a thin film have been investigated. The non-Fourier, hyperbolic heat conduction equation is solved, using finite difference method with an implicit scheme. Calculations have been carried out for three geometrical configurations with various film thicknesses. The boundary condition of a symmetrical temperature step-change on both sides has been used. Time history for the temperature distribution for each investigated case is presented. Processes of thermal wave propagation, temperature peak build-up and reverse wave front creation have been described. It has been shown that (i) significant temperature overshoot can appear in the film subjected to symmetric thermal load (which can be potentially dangerous for reallife application), and (ii) effect of temperature amplification decreases with increased film thickness.

Heat waves are defined as at least 3 consecutive days with maximum temperaturę >30°C (Krzyżewska, Wereski 2011). Their course largely depends on the circulation conditions, but local conditions related to the geographic location and surroundings of the station also play an important role. According to the International Panel for Climate Change, heat waves are treated as extreme events (IPCC 2014) that will be longer and more intensive in the future (Meehl, Tebaldi 2004). One of the longest and most intensive heat waves in Central-East Europe occurred in the first half of August 2015. In the Lublin Region, it commenced on 3 August 2015, and lasted continuously for almost two weeks. The objective of the paper is to present the variability of the thermal conditions that occurred in the Lublin Region during an exceptionally strong heat wave in August 2015. The analysis was performed based on data obtained from six stations of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) and seven automatic field stations of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS).

Opis:
Research in termoacoustics began with the observation of the heat transfer between gas and solids. Using this interaction the intense sound wave could be applied to create engines and heat pumps. The most important part of thermoacoustic devices is a regenerator, where press of conversion of sound energy into thermal or vice versa takes place. In a heat pump the acoustic wave produces the temperature difference at the two ends of the regenerator. The aim of the paper is to find the influence of the material used for the construction of a regenerator on the properties of a thermoacoustic heat pump. Modern technologies allow us to create new materials with physical properties necessary to increase the temperature gradient on the heat exchangers. The aim of this paper is to create a regenerator which strongly improves the efficiency of the heat pump.
