    The suitability of the IREQ (insulation required) index for predicting the thermal responses of 6 participants wearing chemical protective clothing was tested during exercise at -20 and -25 °C. IREQ was used to calculate duration limited exposure (DLE). Measured DLE correlated (r= .899, p < .001) with the predicted DLE. In exposures exceeding 40 min, however, the predicted DLE tended to be 10-20 min too short compared to the measured one. During short exposures the prediction was 5-20 min too long. The results show that IREQ overestimated the cold strain in participants wearing chemical protective clothing during cold exposures longer than 40 min. Nevertheless, predicted DLE never exceeded measured times and thus the prediction was always safe from the occupational point of view.

    This study consists of assessments of the thermal environment and physiological strain in tasks associated with airport, construction, and metal jobs. The number of male and female participants was 108. Environmental heat stress was evaluated with the WBGT index. Physiological strain was evaluated by the relative cardiovascular load (%CVL) based on the measurements of heart rate. Also the increase of body temperature, weight loss, and perceived discomfort were determinated. At work sites the assessments lasted for 2 to 4 hrs for each participant. The mean physiological strain exceeded the level of 30%CVL. Severe peaks (over 60%CVL) were observed in specific tasks being in agreement with perceived discomfort ratings. The increase of body temperature and weight loss in most cases remained within acceptable limits. For the most strenuous tasks, various ergonomic improvements were developed in consultation with workers and managers.

    W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań zużycia tribologicznego stopu na osnowie fazy międzymetalicznej Ni₃Al z dodatkami stopowymi cyrkonu i boru, metodą "pin-on-disc" w warunkach tarcia suchego. Na podstawie wyników badań stwierdzono istotny wpływ jednorodności struktury na odporność na zużycie tribologiczne badanego stopu (homogenizacja składu fazowego i prawdopodobny wzrost stopnia uporzadkowania). Próbki poddane procesowi rekrystalizacji po uprzednim odkształceniu plastycznym na zimno materiału ze stanu po odlewaniu lub homogenizacji posiadaja dobrą odporność na zużycie tribologiczne. W przeciwieństwie do nich materiał w stanie po odlewaniu i po odkształceniu plastycznym na zimno wykazuje istotnie niższą odporność na zużycie tribologiczne. Pomimo znacznego umocnienia (dwukrotnie wyższe - w porównaniu do stanu po odlewaniu), stop Ni₃Al odkształcony plastycznie na zimno wykazuje najnizszą odporność na zużycie tribologiczne.
    Resistance to tribological wear of Ni₃Al-based intermetallic alloy with the alloying additions of Zr and B was investigated using "pin-on-disc" method at room temperature. It has been found that tribological wear resistance of investigated alloy strongly depends on a degree of homogenisation of its structure (predominantly chemical homogenisation and probably a level of ordering). Samples with structure modified by homogenisation treatment and by cold rolling followed by recrystalization showed excellent wear resistance in opposite to as-cast or cold rolled condition. Even though cold working significantly increases (doubled - in comparison to as-cast condition) level of Ni₃Al alloy hardening, a tribological wear resistance for this case is the lowest among all investigated samples.

    Five students of a rescue training school cycled at 50 W for 20 min at 20 oC before walking at 5 km/hr up to 30 min in a climatic chamber at 55 oC and 30% relative humidity. 4 different types of clothing ensembles differing in terms of thickness and thermal insulation value were tested on separate days. All subjects completed 28–30 min in light clothing, but quit after 20–27 min in 3 firefighter ensembles due to a rectal temperature of 39 oC or subjective fatigue. No difference in the evolution of mean skin or rectal temperature was seen for the 3 turnout ensembles. Sweat production amounted to about 1000 g in the turnout gears of which less than 20% evaporated. It was concluded that the small differences between the turnout gears in terms of design, thickness and insulation value had no effect on the resulting heat physiological strain for the given experimental conditions.

    Istotnym problemem w dnach sitowych wymienników ciepła jest zamocowanie rurek w płycie, np. przez rozwalcowanie. W wyniku tego procesu następuje trwałe odkształcenie plastyczne wokół otworów, co ma wpływ na kształt sąsiednich otworów, a następnie na pracę całej płyty i rurek. Dla konstruktorów wymiennika ciepła istotna jest analiza wytrzymałościowa połączenia, pozwalająca na określenie stanu naprężeń i przemieszczeń dna sitowego w jego warunkach pracy. Metoda elementów skończonych umożliwia wierne odwzorowanie konstrukcji, a także technologii wykonania i montażu wymiennika. W pracy przedstawiono obliczenia naprężeń i odkształceń dla różnych grubości dna sitowego.
    For designers of heat exchangers, the strength analysis of the connection, which allows for determination of the state of stress and the calculation of displacements of the perforated bottom after fixing pipes in it, is of special importance. It results from the computations carried out that maximum reduced stresses in the perforated bottom are significantly lower than the values of admissible stresses. In this paper, the computations of stresses and strains for various thicknesses of the perforated bottom have been presented. As a result of decrease in the thickness of the perforated bottom, its deflection increases.

    In the present paper the onset of plastic strain localization was determined using two independent methods based on strain and temperature field analysis. The strain field was obtained from markers displacement recorded using visible light camera. In the same time, on the other side of the specimen, the temperature field was determined by means of infrared camera. The objective of this work was to specify the conditions when the non-uniform temperature distribution can be properly used as the indicator of plastic strain localization. In order to attain the objective an analysis of strain and temperature fields for different deformation rates were performed. It has been shown, that for given experimental conditions, the displacement rate 2000 mm/min is a threshold, above which the non-uniform temperature distribution can be used as the indicator of plastic strain localization.
    W niniejszej pracy początek lokalizacji odkształcenia plastycznego wyznaczono przy użyciu dwóch niezależnych metod bazujących na analizie pola odkształceń i pola temperatury. Pole odkształceń wyznaczono na podstawie przemieszczeń markerów zarejestrowanych przy użyciu kamery w świetle widzialnym. Jednocześnie, na przeciwległej powierzchni próbki wyznaczano pole temperatury przy użyciu kamery podczerwieni. Celem niniejszej pracy było określenie warunków, w których niejednorodny rozkład temperatury może być użyty, jako wskaźnik lokalizacji odkształcenia plastycznego. Aby osiągnąć postawiony cel, przeprowadzono analizę pola odkształceń i pola temperatury dla różnych prędkości deformacji. Pokazano, ze dla zadanych warunków eksperymentu, prędkość przemieszczenia 2000 mm/min, stanowi próg, powyżej którego niejednorodne pole temperatury może być używane, jako wskaźnik lokalizacji odkształcenia plastycznego.

    This work concerns numerical modelling of thermal and structural strain, resulting in heating and cooling of laser butt-welded joints. Numerical analysis of strain is carried out in Abaqus FEA. Through the use of additional author's subroutines, the structural strain caused by phase transformations during heating and cooling of welded elements is taken into account in the analysis. V.I. Machnienko models as well as Continuous Heating Transformation (CHT) and Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) diagrams for S355 steel are implemented into UEXPAN subroutine in order to determine the kinetics of phase transformation in the solid state. The model takes into account thermomechanical properties of the base material varying with temperature. The paper presents results of numerical simulation of temperature field, predicted structural composition, thermal and structural strain in laser butt-welded joints.
    W pracy przedstawiono numeryczne modelowanie odkształceń cieplnych i strukturalnych, powstających podczas nagrzewania i chłodzenia, złącza spawanego doczołowo wiązka promieniowania laserowego. Analizę numeryczna odkształceń przeprowadzono w programie Abaqus FEA. Dzięki zastosowaniu dodatkowych autorskich aplikacji w analizie uwzględniono odkształcenia strukturalne wywoływane przemianami fazowymi podczas nagrzewania i chłodzenia spawanych elementów. Do wyznaczenia kinetyki przemian fazowych w stanie stałym zastosowano modele V.I. Machnienki oraz wykresy CTPA i CTPc-S dla stali S355 implementowane do procedury UEXPAN. W modelu uwzględniono zmienne z temperatura własności termomechaniczne spawanego materiału. Przedstawiono wyniki symulacji numerycznych pola temperatury, prognozowanego numerycznie składu strukturalnego oraz odkształceń termicznych i strukturalnych w złączu spawanym doczołowo wiązka promienia laserowego.

    The purpose of this study was to develop a body characteristic index (BCI) based on the distribution of maximal oxygen uptake per body mass (VO2max/mass), body surface area per body mass (BSA/mass), and percentage of body fat (Fat%) to evaluate the relative level of individual physiological responses to heat strain in a group of workers. BCI was based upon the data obtained from 10 males and 10 females exercising for 60 min on a treadmill at 2 relative exercise intensities of 25% and 45% VO2max in mild, warm wet, and hot dry climate condition, separately. BCI was developed into 2 formulas, which were proved to be better predictors for heat strain responses than each individual characteristic, and more sensitive than body type to describe the distributions of individual characteristics and distinguish the differences in physiological responses to heat.

    In this paper a technique has been developed to determine constant parameters of copper as a power-law hardening material by tensile test approach. A work-hardening process is used to describe the increase of the stress level necessary to continue plastic deformation. A computer program is used to show the variation of the stress-strain relation for different values of stress hardening exponent, n and power-law hardening constant, α . Due to its close tolerances, excellent corrosion resistance and high material strength, in this analysis copper (Cu) has been selected as the material. As a power-law hardening material, Cu has been used to compute stress hardening exponent, n and power-law hardening constant, α from tensile test experiment without heat treatment and after heat treatment. A wealth of information about mechanical behavior of a material can be determined by conducting a simple tensile test in which a cylindrical specimen of a uniform cross-section is pulled until it ruptures or fractures into separate pieces. The original cross sectional area and gauge length are measured prior to conducting the test and the applied load and gauge deformation are continuously measured throughout the test. Based on the initial geometry of the sample, the engineering stress-strain behavior (stress-strain curve) can be easily generated from which numerous mechanical properties, such as the yield strength and elastic modulus, can be determined. A universal testing machine is utilized to apply the load in a continuously increasing (ramp) manner according to ASTM specifications. Finally, theoretical results are compared with these obtained from experiments where the nature of curves is found similar to each other. It is observed that there is a significant change of the value of n obtained with and without heat treatment it means the value of n should be determined for the heat treated condition of copper material for their applications in engineering fields.

    Hardening is one of the manufacturing processes used for improving mechanical properties such as strength, hardness and wear resistances of the mechanical components for machine parts. This paper describes modelling of the processes of steel C80U hardening. The first priority was given to thermal phenomena, phase transformations in a solid state and mechanical phenomena. A numerical algorithm of thermal phenomena was based on the Finite Elements Methods in the Galerkin formula of the heat transfer equations. In the model of phase transformations, in simulations heating process, isothermal or continuous heating (CHT) was applied, whereas in the cooling process continuous cooling (CCT) of the steel. In the model of mechanical phenomena, apart from thermal, plastic and structural strain, transformations plasticity was also taken into account. The stress and strain fields are obtained using the solution of the Finite Elements Method of the equilibrium equation in rate form. The thermophysical constants occurring in constitutive relation depend on temperature and phase composite. In order to determine plastic strain, the Huber-Mises condition with isotropic strengthening was applied, whereas for determination of transformation plasticity a modified Leblond model was used. In order to evaluate the quality and usefulness of the presented models a numerical analysis of temperature field, phase fraction, stress and strain associated hardening process of a cone-shaped fang lathe made of tool steel was carried out.

    The article discusses changes in Polish regulations concerning assessment of the climate hazard in underground mines. Currently, the main empirical index representing the heat strain, used in qualification of the workplace to one of the climate hazard levels in Poland is the equivalent climate temperature. This simple heat index allows easy and quick assessment of the climate hazard. To a major extent, simple heat indices have simplifications and are developed for a specific working environments. Currently, the best methods used in evaluation of microclimate conditions in the workplace are those based on the theory of human thermal balance, where the physiological parameters characterising heat strain are body water loss and internal core temperature of the human body. The article describes the results of research on usage of equivalent climate temperature to heat strain evaluation in underground mining excavations. For this purpose, the numerical model of heat exchange between man and his environment was used, taken from PN-EN ISO 7933:2005. The research discussed in this paper has been carried out considering working conditions and clothing insulation in use in underground mines. The analyses performed in the study allowed formulation of conclusions concerning application of the equivalent climate temperature as a criterion of assessment of climate hazards in underground mines.
    W artykule omówiono zmiany w polskich przepisach dotyczących oceny zagrożenia klimatycznego w kopalniach podziemnych. Obecnie głównym wskaźnikiem zaliczenia stanowiska pracy do jednego ze stopni zagrożenia klimatycznego jest temperatura zastępcza klimatu. Ten prosty wskaźnik mikroklimatu umożliwia wykonanie, w łatwy i szybki sposób, oceny zagrożenia klimatycznego. Proste wskaźniki mikroklimatu w dużej mierze posiadają uproszczenia i są opracowane do konkretnego środowiska pracy. Najlepszymi obecnie metodami oceny warunków cieplnych pracy są metody oparte na teorii bilansu cieplnego człowieka, gdzie parametrami fizjologicznymi charakteryzującymi obciążenie cieplne jest ubytek wody z organizmu oraz temperatura wewnętrzna ciała. W artykule opisano wyniki badań nad zasadnością zastosowania temperatury zastępczej klimatu do oceny obciążenia cieplnego w wyrobiskach podziemnych. W tym celu wykorzystano model numeryczny wymiany ciepła między organizmem człowieka a otoczeniem, zaczerpnięty z normy PN-EN ISO 7933:2005. Omawiane badania zostały przeprowadzone przy uwzględnieniu ciężkości pracy oraz izolacyjności termicznej odzieży stosowanej w zakładach górniczych. Zrealizowane badania pozwoliły na sformułowanie wniosków dotyczących zastosowania temperatury zastępczej klimatu jako kryterium oceny zagrożenia klimatycznego w kopalniach podziemnych.

    Porównanie wyników badań wykonanych w komorze klimatycznej z udziałem ochotników w warunkach otoczenia: ta = 42°C; RH = 80%; prężność pary wodnej = 6,56 kPa, V=0,5 m/s; z prognozami z symulacji numerycznej wykonanej programem PHS wykazały ich zadowalającą zgodność. Potwierdza to możliwość wykorzystania programu PHS do prognozowania obciążenia cieplnego człowieka w ekstremalnym środowisku gorącym, kiedy prężność pary wodnej w otaczającym środowisku przekracza wartość 4,5 kPa, przyjętą w normie PN-EN ISO 7933:2005 jako wartość maksymalną zakresu normy.
    Comparison of the results of tests carried out in a climatic chamber with volunteers at ambient conditions: ta = 42°C, RH = 80%; the vapor pressure = 6.56 kPa, V = O 5 m/s, with predictions from numerical simulation made by the PHS program, they showed their satisfactory compatibility. This confirms the possibility of using the PHS program to predict the heat load of a human being in an extreme hot environment, when the vapor pressure in the surrounding environment exceeds 4 5 kPa, indicated in PN-EN ISO 7933 2005 as a limit value.

    Wstęp Kąpiele w saunie suchej i w łaźni parowej ze względu na różny stopień obciążenia cieplnego wywołują też różne reakcje organizmu. Duża wilgotność powietrza w saunie mokrej utrudnia parowanie potu ze skóry. Ponadto dynamika pocenia się jest różna u kobiet i mężczyzn. Celem pracy była analiza zmian wskaźników fizjologicznych oraz porównanie wpływu sauny suchej i mokrej na odczucie komfortu cieplnego ocenianego w skali termicznej Bedforda, a także zbadanie wielkości obciążenia fizjologicznego (physiological strain index – PSI) i skumulowanego wskaźnika obciążeń cieplnych (cumulative heat stress index − CHSI) u młodych zdrowych kobiet. Materiał i metody W badaniach wzięło udział 10 kobiet w wieku 22−24 lat. Pomiary w obu typach sauny prowadzono w fazie folikularnej cyklu miesięcznego. Każda sesja trwała 60 min i składała się z trzech 15-minutowych ekspozycji cieplnych z 5-minutowymi przerwami na odpoczynek i schłodzenie wodą. Temperatura w saunie suchej wynosiła 91±1,2°C, w mokrej – 59±1,3°C; wilgotność powietrza, odpowiednio: 18±0,7% i 60,5±0,8%. Dokonano pomiarów masy ciała, ciśnienia skurczowego (systolic blood pressure − SBP) i rozkurczowego (diastolic blood pressure − DBP), częstości skurczów serca (heart rate − HR), temperatury rektalnej ($ \text{T}_\text{re} $) i odczuć termicznych według skali Bedforda. Wyliczono współczynniki obciążenia fizjologicznego: PSI oraz CHSI. Wyniki Po saunie suchej średnie ubytki masy ciała badanych kobiet były istotnie wyższe niż po kąpieli w saunie mokrej. Po zabiegu w saunie mokrej zaobserwowano istotnie większe przyrosty $ \text{T}_\text{re} $ oraz HR. Oba zabiegi powodowały wzrost SBP. Podczas obu kąpieli ciśnienie rozkurczowe ulegało obniżeniu. Subiektywne odczucie uciążliwości zabiegu oraz PSI i CHSI było większe podczas kąpieli w saunie mokrej. Wnioski Ekspozycja cieplna w saunie mokrej stanowi większe obciążenie dla organizmu młodych kobiet niż taki sam zabieg w saunie suchej, a zmiany badanych cech są większe od tych, które zaobserwowano u mężczyzn poddanych podobnym obciążeniom termicznym.     Background There are differences between dry and wet sauna baths because of the heat load and human body’s reactions. High humidity in a wet sauna makes evaporation of sweat from the skin surface more difficult. In addition, the dynamics of sweating is different in men and women. The aim of the study was to assess changes in physiological indicators and to compare the impact of dry and wet saunas on the thermal comfort feeling, which was assessed using the Bedford thermal scale, and the physiological strain index (PSI) and the cumulative heat stress index (CHSI) in young healthy women. Material and Methods Ten women aged 22−24 years took part in the study. A session in each sauna lasted 60 min and consisted of 3 thermal 15-min exposures, in 5-min intervals for rest and cooling with water. The temperature in the dry sauna was 91±1.2°C and in the wet sauna 59±1.3°C, while the humidity was 18±0.7% and 60.5±0.8%, respectively. Body weight, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR), rectal temperature ($ \text{T}_\text{re} $) and the thermal sensation (Bedford scale) were also measured. The PSI and CHSI values were both calculated. Results The average weight loss after a dry sauna bath was significantly higher than after a wet sauna bath. Significantly higher increases in $ \text{T}_\text{re} $, as well as in HR were observed after treatment in the wet sauna, compared to the dry sauna. Both treatments resulted in an increase in SBP and a decrease in DBP. The arduousness of thermal discomfort and the levels of PSI and CHSI were skurgreater in the wet sauna bathing than in the dry sauna. Conclusions Heat exposure in the wet sauna creates a greater burden for young women’s bodies than the same dry sauna treatment, and the changes observed in the examined traits were higher than in men subjected to similar thermal loads.     Thermal phenomena related to plastic deformation can be commonly observed. By simply touching a ruptured or bent sample, it is clear that the temperature has risen at the deformation site. Such observations can be carried out for qualitative or quantitative assessment. This paper serves to qualitatively relate the changes in the structure of the deformed material to the temperature increase observed with an infrared camera.

    This paper describes the study of ventilated car disc brakes stress-strain conditions and friction under the pressure using the ANSYS environment. Such influencing factors are taken into account in the course of research as angular speed value, the pressure of the pads on the disk, the nature of the load application, convection, thermal expansion, etc. Computer modelling of the stress field and the transient thermal field in the area of contact between the pads and the disk is provided by the method of sequential thermostructural communication of the intermediate states of the brake model directly in the ANSYS Coupled Field Transient environment. Besides, the ANSYS calculations were also performed based on the primitive assembly model of two steel blocks (the discrepancy was less than 3%) to determine the identity of the theoretical knowledge about the heating of bodies as a result of the work to overcome frictional forces. Finally, a high level of calculation results convergence by analytical formulas and computer modelling was established. Since this approach justified itself, its principles were taken as a basis in the calculations of ventilated disc brakes of cars, which significantly facilitates their application, knowing the area of the active part of the disc (the rest of the boundary conditions are typical and correspond to the normal operating modes of the vehicle).
