Opis:
Background. Occupational factors have previously been mentioned as contributing to decreased kidney function and the development of chronic kidney disease of unknown cause. Sea salt workers are one of the occupations facing high outdoor temperatures and a highly, intensive workload. Objective. The purpose of the study was to examine whether the kidney function of sea salt workers at the beginning of the harvest season differs from kidney function at the end of the harvest season and to identify factors that can predict the change of kidney function. Material and methods. Data were collected from salt workers (n=50) who were between 18–60 years of age without hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease in Samut Sakhon province, Thailand. Urine specific gravity (USG) was used for hydration status and the estimated glomerular filter rate (eGFR) was used to measure kidney function. The mixed model was used to find differences over the harvest season and prediction of factors. Results. On average, the eGFR was estimated to decrease by 15.2 ml/min/1.73 m2 over the harvest season. The decline in eGFR of sea salt workers with moderate and heavy workloads were significantly faster than their light workload counterparts after controlling for other covariates. Similarly, dehydration (USG ≥ 1.030) significantly accelerated the rate of kidney function loss. Conclusions. Our study confirmed exposure to heat over the harvest season leads to decreased eGFR in sea salt workers. The rate of change of eGFR could be predicted by workload and hydration status. Workers with dehydration who performed medium to heavy workloads in farms showed faster kidney function decline than those who performed light workload.

Opis:
Background. Excessive heat exposure and dehydration among agricultural workers have been reported to reduce kidney function and lead to chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu). Objective. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess heat exposure, factors related to dehydration and the relationship between dehydration and biomarkers of kidney function among sea salt workers in Thailand. Material and methods. Wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) was used at the time workers started work outdoors on salt farms. Urine-specific gravity, urine osmolarity, and serum creatinine were collected from 50 workers after work. Results. The results showed that more than 50% of the participants were dehydrated after work. The maximum hours spent working per day was 10. The average water intake was 1.51 L. Urine specific gravity was highly significant correlated with urine osmolality (rs = 0.400, p<0.01), and urine osmolality was significantly correlated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (rs = 0.349, p<0.05). In bivariate analysis adjusted for age, sex, and current alcohol consumption, we found that a WBGTTWA ≥ 30°C (OR = 0.08, 95% CI = 0.01-0.44, p = 0.003) and hours spent working (OR=2.22, 95% CI = 1.42-3.47, p <0.001) were independently associated with dehydration. This suggests that workers should increase their time spent on breaks and increase water consumption. Conclusions. Educational program on heat exposure and heat-related illness prevention strategies should be provided.

The dynamics of physiological stress and thermal balance were investigated in men subjected to endogenous and exogenous heat loads. The study was conducted using the thermometric method. Substantial differences in the dynamics of the tested parameters and their quantitative characteristics were observed in 1 out of 8 participants. In this article, the observed differences are rationalized in terms of the deficient sweat rate mechanism. It is pointed out that it is indispensable to address these cases in work safety regulations.

Opis:
Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between high air temperatures and occupational injuries (OIs) occurred during the summer seasons 2000–2013 in agricultural workers from the Autonomous Province of Trento (APT), North-Eastern Italy. Material and Methods Data about OIs for the APT from 2000 to 2013 occurring during the warm season (N = 7325) was provided by the National Institute of Insurance for Occupational Illness and Injury. Daily average and daily maximum temperatures values for the specific geographical site of events were retrieved. Daily temperatures were then assessed in 3 time lags: for the day of the event (lag 0), and for the previous 24 h (lag 1) and 48 h (lag 2). Daily temperatures were then categorized in 3 exposure groups (< 75th, 75–95th and > 95th percentiles). The risk of OIs was assessed as odds ratio (OR) calculated through a Poisson regression model controlled for age, sex, ethnicity and time period, and assuming OI rates for days on which temperature was comprised in < 75th percentile exposure groups as the referent ones. Results Estimated incidence of OIs during the study period was 3.4±2.3 events/day. The peak of work-related accidents occurred on days characterized by severe thermal conditions, and in particular during heat waves (incidence rate ratio = 1.09, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02–1.17, p = 0.0165). Days having temperatures higher than 95th percentile, assessed as daily average, both on current days (OR = 1.119, 95% CI: 1.008–1.242) and in lag 1 (OR = 1.125, 95% CI: 1.013–1.249), as well as daily maximum temperatures, were at the highest risk of work-related injuries (OR = 1.144, 95% CI: 1.029–1.272). Conclusions In conclusion, presented findings recommend policymakers to develop appropriate warning/alert systems for agricultural workers regarding high environmental temperatures. Opis:
Aerogels are distinguished by their low density and thermal conductivity, which predisposes them for application in materials against extremely low or high temperature. Aerogel resistance to aging factors such as moisture, high temperature and thermal radiation was studied. Aerogel resistance to moisture absorption was studied by the weight method, at a relative humidity of 65% and 95%. For aerogels exposed to heat (at 260 °C) and thermal radiation (heat flux density 20 kW/m2), structural and textural characteristics (specific surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution) were determined. It was found that in an environment characterised by 95% humidity, the moisture weight absorbed was similar for all aerogels and amounted to less than 1%, corresponding to low moisture absorption capacity. The most significant changes in specific surface area were recorded for aerogels in powder form, where the value of this parameter after exposure to high temperature increased by 13% compared to the reference sample. An increase in the specific surface area can effect a reduction in thermal conductivity; thus this change is positive in character in the context of application to clothing designed against thermal factors.
260 °C) i promieniowanie cieplne (przy gęstości strumienia ciepła 20 kW/m2) wyznaczono cechy strukturalne i teksturalne (powierzchnia właściwa, objętość porów, rozkład wielkości porów).

Opis:
Objectives The objective of this study has been to evaluate the occupational heat exposure of 12 workers at 5 plants in a subtropical country. Material and Methods The heat stresses and strain on workers in 5 plants were assessed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7243 index (wet bulb globe temperature – WBGT) and the ISO 7933 index (maximum allowable exposure time – $ \text{D}_\text{lim} $). Results Results indicated that 42% of the subjects (5 workers) surpassed the WBGT limits. According to the $ \text{D}_\text{lim} $, 42% of the subjects could not continue working in the hot environments. The relationships between the various heat stress indices and the WBGT index were also correlated. However, further studies from different heat environments and more subjects should be performed. Conclusions The sensitive dependence of skin temperature on meteorological and physiological indices for each subject was clearly observed. Obviously, the heart rate response to metabolic rate was much greater than that caused by environmental heat alone. The exponential relationship between workers’ duration-limited exposure time, predicted by various estimated criteria, and WBGT were also found. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(3):379–395

Opis:
The paper presents results of simulation tests for the heat balance of double, triple and quadruple glazed windows with eastern, southern, western and northern exposure, conducted for the climate conditions of the city of Poznań and the Wielkopolska region in response to the needs of eco power engineering. It was shown that in the summer period a greater number of window panes and a change in exposure from southern to eastern, western and northern result in a considerable reduction of heat balance for these windows. In the summer months from May to August heat balance of windows with eastern, southern and western exposure is comparable. The heat balance of windows with the northern exposure is much lower in each month of the summer period. In the winter period the highest and positive heat balance is recorded for windows with the southern exposure. Windows facing the other geographical directions have a comparable balance with values around zero. At all the exposures an increased number of window panes to a relatively limited extent improves heat balance, in general for the entire winter period and in its individual months.

Opis:
Objectives To investigate 4 loci of 3 HSP70 genes in caustic soda production plant former workers, who have been exposed to metallic mercury vapors for a long time, and including numerous cases of chronic mercury intoxication (CMI). Material and Methods Polymorphisms in HSP70 gene family members (HSP1A1 (+190G/C, rs1043618), HSPA1B (+1267A/G and +2074G/C, rs1061581) and HSP1AL (+2437T/C, rs2227956)) genes were studied among 120 male workers involved in caustic soda production by mercury electrolysis at 2 plants in Eastern Siberia. These subjects had been chronically exposed to metallic mercury vapors for > 5 years and divided into 3 groups based on the occurrence and time of the CMI diagnosis, or absence of this disease. The Group 1 consisted of individuals (N = 46), who had had contact with mercury but were not diagnosed with the CMI. The Group 2 included workers (N = 56), who were diagnosed with the CMI longer than 14 years ago. The Group 3 consisted of the subjects (N = 18), who had been diagnosed with the CMI 3–5 years ago. The logistic regression analysis was used for 3 genetic models with and without adjustment for age and duration of mercury vapor exposure. Results We found that genotypes СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) had a high predictive risk of the CMI development (adjusted odds ratio ($\text{OR}_\text{adj}$) = 5.58, p = 0.026 and $\text{OR}_\text{adj}$ = 14.7, p = 0.0015, respectively). Twelve individuals with the CMI had a specific combination of СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) genotypes, which strongly associated with the diagnosis ($\text{OR}_\text{adj}$ = 12.3, p = 0.0285). Moreover, significant association with the CMI was also obtained for the haplotype G-C of 1267A/G and 190G/C polymorphisms (OR = 2.1, p = 0.018). Conclusions The association of СС-HSPA1A (+190G/C) and GG-HSPA1B (+1267A/G) genotypes and their combination for the CMI individuals suggests the role for HSPA1 genes in mercury-dependent mechanisms of the CMI development and progression.
