Burnout (MBI) scale
Opis:
Burn-out or exhaustion syndrome is caused by a prolonged exposure to a chronic professional stress. Public Health Professionals are the most exposed to this kind of risk. The ultimate goal here is to determine the prevalence of the burn-out and search for factors associated with this pathology among those who work in the field of health. Our sample, which is from the Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, consists of 150 nurses, 80 doctors, and 40 administrators. A self-questionnaire was employed, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) as well as a clinical interview. The results of this study show a high degree of burnout. Moreover, 56.66% of participants show a high level of emotional exhaustion, 45.18% suffer from a high level of depression. Meanwhile, the loss of a sense of personal accomplishment is high among 48.51% of those surveyed. The emotional exhaustion observed among people who have worked for a long time ago is associated with the means of transportation used and to the unsuitable hours of work. Depersonalization exists among elderly people and the oldest at work. This study confirms the existence of a high level of burnout among health professionals. Many socio-demographic and socio-professional factors contribute to the increase in the level that people are affected. These factors encourage the promotion of better working life conditions.

The article describes vocational trajectories of migrant doctors who work in Poland. A typology of careers is introduced. It encompasses three models: migrants who graduate from Polish medical schools, migrants from third (non-EU) countries who come to work in Poland after graduation, an “intra-European” migrants, who benefit from the free movement of workers and services in the European Union. The statistical part situates the discussed issues in the macro-sociological context, demonstrating the main countries of origin, countries of medical education and frequency of naturalization. The qualitative study focuses on a description of individual motivations for migration and work in Poland. The study indicates that in the case of labor migration the reasons for international mobility include (also) non-economic, cultural factors, for example reluctance to work in the grey market in the sending country, where low official income is compensated by bribes.

The Western Balkan countries have been faced with a rising outward mobility of health professionals, driven by the increasing demand for this category of worker, especially in European countries. Labour-market imbalances are pushing many health professionals to leave the Western Balkan region. As a consequence, shortages of health professionals are looming and access to health services in the region is put under strain. The purpose of this study is to shed light on the recent pattern of mobility of health professionals from Western Balkan (WB) countries. A gravity model is implemented to analyse the push-and-pull factors of mobility during 2000–2019 and towards European countries. The analysis finds that income differentials between WB and European countries are strong pull factors. Additionally, policy changes in the destination countries shape the mobility patterns and several European countries, especially Germany, have benefited from the mobility of health professionals from WB countries.

Background: Tattoo is becoming a more and more common form of body decoration of people from representatives of various professions. The aim of this study was: what is the opinion of university students about medical staff having visible tattoos. Material and methods: The study was conducted among the students of four universities in Gdańsk. The questionnaire contained questions about the acceptance of visible tattoos in people working in medical professions. The respondents were also asked about their attitudes to tattoos as a form of body decoration and whether they had tattoos themselves. The statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software. Results: Filled-in questionnaires were obtained from 676 respondents, including 477 students of the medical university and 199 students of non-medical universities. The students who have tattoos themselves accept visible tattoos in healthcare professionals to a significantly greater extent (92%) than those who do not have tattoos, but the acceptance of visible tattoos in healthcare professionals in this group turned out to be very high too (75%). The respondents most readily accepted a visible tattoo on the skin of a laboratory diagnostician (75%). Conclusions: University students, regardless of their university profile, consider a visible tattoo as a completely acceptable phenomenon in healthcare professionals.

Opis:
This paper discusses the mechanisms that lead to consensus in shared decision-making (SDM) from a theoretical point of view. It considers the way in which SDM interventions are expected to share information, preferences and create shared mental representations in treatment decisions. It draws on consensus theory to argue that both content-based and process-based consensus are needed in SDM interventions in order to achieve an acceptable level of shared-ness. Three types of conditions are identified from the literature for fostering consensus: content, agent and process conditions. These conditions are further pursued in one Practitioner Training support document and one SDM intervention evaluation report. The analysis revealed that the SDM interventions analyzed pursue only process-based consensus, while disregarding content-based consensus. Further research is required for generalized conclusions. Further implications for practice of these findings are expected to be in the area of patient adherence to treatment and patient satisfaction with service quality.
W literaturze można odnaleźć trzy rodzaje warunków wspierających osiąganie konsensusu: wewnętrzne, indywidualne i zewnętrzne czynniki procesu. Trzy wymienione warunki zostały zastosowane w dokumencie wspierającym szkolenie pracowników służby zdrowia i raporcie z ewaluacji interwencji w podejmowanie wspólnej decyzji.

psychiatric hospital
Opis:
Purpose: To estimate the frequency of aggressive behaviors in health care institutions, and determine their influence on emotional reactions of medical workers. Materials and methods: The study involved 201 health care professionals from the regions of Lower Silesia and Opole in Poland. The authors employed the exposure to patient aggression inventory, based on the questionnaires of Merecz and Nowicka & Kolasa; this inventory divides patient aggression towards medical workers into seven different forms. Results: In over 90% of cases, health care professionals fell victim to patient aggression in a workplace. It mostly took forms of verbal aggression, a raised voice and shouting. A physical attack was reported by 45.6% of the surveyed; it resulted in physical injuries in 27.9% of psychiatric hospital workers and 24.7% of general hospital workers. As a reaction to patients’ verbal aggression, medical workers usually calmly explained that such behavior was improper. Violence and aggressive behaviors of patients evoked workers’ anger, fear, a feeling of resignation and the loss of their sense of safety. In most case's victims of patient aggression either coped with the problem themselves or asked their co-workers and superiors for help. Conclusions: Aggressive behaviors of patients arouse in medical staff, mostly anger. Medical workers usually cope with patient aggression themselves; nurses more often than other health care professionals ask their superiors and co-workers for help. It is necessary to conduct further research into the problem of patient aggression towards medical staff so that actions ensuring safety for workers can be taken.

BackgroundWhen assessing physical activity (PA), particular attention should be paid to medical university students who are taught to be health care professionals (HCPs) responsible for maintaining health in humans. However, different studies have shown that HCPs exhibit the same unhealthy behaviors as the general population. This study analyzed PA among medical university students of different faculties and their adherence to current PA recommendations.Material and MethodsData from 216 medical university students of physiotherapy, dietetics and pharmacy, including males (N = 44) and females (N = 172), the mean age of 22.3±1.8 years, were collected. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire in its long form (IPAQ-LF) was used to assess and classify PA behaviors. The results were analyzed in accordance with World Health Organization recommendations regarding PA.ResultsOver 60% of all the students were classified as active during all-day activity. However, while analyzing PA in different domains, the same shares of all the students were still insufficiently active during leisure time, and so they did not meet the recommendation of >75 min/week of vigorous PA, >150 min/week of moderate PA or an equivalent combination. All the students self-reported PA mainly in the work and transport domains. Generally, physiotherapy students were the most active and performed PA with higher intensity.ConclusionsThis study revealed a low level of leisure time PA among the students, and no habit of regular PA. Some changes in medical education should be suggested to include physical education as a long-term subject in medical school curricula. Future research is needed to investigate the exercise barriers that students perceive, which can guide future interventions aimed at improving their PA, and thereby impact on the quality of health care which they will provide.

Opis:
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic exerted significant mental burden on healthcare workers (HCWs) operating in the frontline of the COVID-19 care as they experienced high levels of stress and burnout. The aim of this scoping review was to identify prevalence and factors associated with burnout among HCWs during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. A literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL. Studies were selected based on the following inclusion criteria: cross-sectional, longitudinal, case-control, or qualitative analyses, published in peer-reviewed journals, between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021. Studies carried out on other occupations than healthcare workers or related to other pandemics than COVID-19 were excluded. Following the abstract screen, from 141 original papers identified, 69 articles were eventually selected. A large variation in the reported burnout prevalence among HCWs (4.3–90.4%) was observed. The main factors associated with increase/ decrease of burnout included: demographic characteristics (age, gender, education level, financial situation, family status, occupation), psychological condition (psychiatric diseases, stress, anxiety, depression, coping style), social factors (stigmatisation, family life), work organization (workload, working conditions, availability of staff and materials, support at work), and factors related with COVID-19 (fear of COVID-19, traumatic events, contact with patients with COVID-19, having been infected with COVID-19, infection of a colleague or a relative with COVID-19, higher number of deaths observed by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic). The findings should be useful for policy makers and healthcare managers in developing programs preventing burnout during the current and future pandemics. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2023;36(1)

Background The unexpected outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led huge impact on health and safety of employees. Although now the epidemiological situation has improved, but it remains a challenge, especially in light of the emergence of new threats. The aim of the work is to present an epidemiological analysis of data on COVID-19 as an occupational disease in Poland. Material and Methods The analysis covered all cases of occupational diseases sent by state sanitary inspectors to the Central Register of Occupational Diseases. The years 2020–2022 and such available data as: age, gender, activities and territorial differentiation were analyzed. The data were presented as absolute numbers and incidence rates per 100 000 employed persons and for healthcare workers also per 100 000 persons authorized to practice. Results In the period 2020–2022 in Poland 7030 diseases recognized as occupational diseases were recorded, of which almost half were infectious diseases (47%). Among infectious diseases, dominated COVID-19 in number of 2059 cases. In this period 98.6% of all cases of COVID-19 were concentrated in the health care and social activities. According to workplaces, most diseases were caused by working in hospitals – 1825 cases (88.6% of all COVID-19 cases in the healthcare workers). Most cases concerned nurses – 1355 cases (65,8%) and doctors – 212 cases (10,3%). The incidence of COVID-19 in the group of physicians per 10 000 persons entitled to practice ranged from 2.6 in 2020 to 68.3 in 2022, while among nurses and midwives the rates were 7.9 and 194.9, respectively. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic changed the picture of occupational diseases in Poland. Therefore, it is very important to understand the key contributions of people working in environments where workers are at increased risk of contracting COVID-19 due to the nature of their work, and to promote the recognition of COVID-19 as an occupational disease.

Introduction: Stress among healthcare professionals has become a major issue in healthcare organizations operating at the domestic, international and global fronts. This profession however, requires people to be physically, emotionally and mentally alert, in order to care for other people. Purpose: To ascertain stress factors among healthcare professional in Nigeria. In order to rank and establish causal relationships among the various stress factors using the Multi-Criteria Decision Making methods (MCDM). Materials and methods: A validated AHP-based questionnaires was used to conduct a survey of 386 healthcare professionals from two tertiary teaching hospitals in South-west, Nigeria, using proportional quota sampling procedure. Results: The results reveal that relationship factor has the most significant impact on the stress of healthcare professionals with an Eigen vector of 0.3531. It finds also that the role factor has the least significant criterion, having an Eigen vector of 0.0778. At the global level of ranking the alternative decision occupational stress factor, speed of change has the highest priority, the least being financial problems. Conclusions: In comparison with others, the health care profession is highly stressful, due mainly to the fact that it has a higher rate of psychological distress. Keeping this in mind, this study has examined what determines occupational stress among healthcare professionals in teaching hospitals in Nigeria.

Aim. Identification and construction of the typology of attitudes of health care professionals in Ukraine to the current COVID-19 situation and vaccination process. Methods. Transcripts of 49 semi-structured interviews subjected to thematic analysis constituted the subject matter of the analysis. On the basis of the categories identified within the thematic analysis process, a typology was developed, with due account of two parameters: the idea about the origin of the virus: artificial or natural, and the attitude of the informants to the policy (implementation of policy decisions) chosen by the authorities to fight the virus. Combination of these two parameters gives four standpoints—types of attitude of health care professionals to the risks associated with COVID-19. Results and conclusion. Analysis of the results has enabled to outline the problem field for assessing the risk of COVID-19, which includes three topics, as well as to point out four typical standpoints in the attitude displayed by health care professionals that are marked as “magical thinking,” “technological thinking,” “negativistic thinking,” “critical thinking.” Originality. The research was conducted during the third wave of coronavirus in Ukraine, therefore, it reflects the analysed opinions of health care professionals about the threat of COVID-19 and vaccination process. The fact that the research was performed using qualitative methods ensured focusing on subjective peculiarities of the perception of changes in the COVID-19 situation.

Pracownicy ochrony zdrowia odgrywają niezwykle ważną rolę w wykrywaniu przemocy i zaniedbań wobec dzieci, a ich aktywna postawa może skutecznie przyczynić się do zapobiegania kolejnym przypadkom stosowania przemocy wobec małoletnich. Osoby doznające przemocy mają prawo oczekiwać, że lekarze prócz pomocy medycznej okażą im wsparcie i pomogą znaleźć wyjście z trudnej sytuacji.
Health care professionals play an extremely important role in detecting child abuse and neglect, and their proactive attitude may contribute to preventing further incidents of violence against children. Victims of violence have the right to expect that doctors will not only provide them with medical care, but also support them and help them find a way out of a difficult situation. Doctors have direct contact with people in their daily work. If they are trusted by their patients and have adequate motivation and knowledge, they may play a key role in stopping violence. Constant training for health care professionals, as well as organizing prevention activities and awareness raising campaigns are essential for strengthening the child protection system.

ObjectivesIn this study, healthcare professionals’ beliefs about sportive recreational activities were examined.Material and MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted with 940 volunteer healthcare professionals. The Sociodemographic Information Form prepared by the authors and the Health-Belief Scale on Sportive Recreational Activities (HBSSRA) determined on the basis of their literature review were used to collect data.ResultsAlthough it was concluded that 72% of the healthcare professionals did not have enough free time, the participation rate in sportive recreational activities reached 71.4%. The study revealed that 44.9% of the participants preferred to engage in sportive recreational activities individually, while 55.1% wanted to do such activities in a group. It was found that 72.9% of the participants took part in sports activities for health-related reasons. The mean health-belief score of the healthcare professionals regarding recreational activities was found to be 80.38 (SD = 10.32). As this score is very close to the maximum value (105.00), it can be stated that their health beliefs are high.ConclusionsIt is understood that participation in sportive recreational activities has positive effects on individuals’ physical and mental health; however, there are also some factors that prevent individuals’ participation in such activities. The income level, the marital status, the spouse’s employment status, having children, and time spent at the place of residence are important factors preventing participation in sportive recreational activities. This study is expected to help individuals gain a perspective about participation in sportive recreational activities, and to provide more evidence in raising the awareness about the protection of individual health. In addition, it is expected to help shape the behaviors aimed at being healthy by improving one’s own health-related beliefs.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to provide quantitative information about occupational health and safety professionals' working conditions and professional independence. The data were obtained through questionnaires applied to employees in the field of occupational health and safety. The validity value of the questions in the questionnaires was calculated as 0.901. The obtained data were analyzed with descriptive statistical techniques. According to the results, the wages and job satisfaction level of occupational health and safety professionals are average, but below what it should be. Health and safety professionals are employed above legal limits. Some of them cannot adequately benefit from their rights such as overtime pay, annual leave, rest breaks and severance pay. On the other hand, there is no job security to ensure the professional independence of health and safety professionals.
