Introduction and aim. Global and national care recommendations indicate that women with high-risk pregnancies should receive personalized and qualified care during this period. This study was conducted to determine the distress levels in high-risk pregnant women and affecting factors. Material and methods. The cross-sectional this study was conducted with total of 416 high-risk pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria in the obstetrics clinic of a training and research hospital. The study data were collected with data collection form and “Tilburg Pregnancy Distress Scale (TPDS).” Results. The mean TPDS total score of high-risk pregnant women was 18.25±6.85. It was found that planning pregnancy, gravida, and diagnosis of gestational hypertension, systemic diseases, and gestational diabetes in the present pregnancy was associated with pregnancy-specific distress (p<0.05; β=0.291, β=0.158, β=0.272, β=0.137, β=0.116, respectively). Conclusion. It is advised that health professionals assess the distress levels of high-risk pregnant women and give personalized care during prenatal period.

Background The competencies of medical staff in the public health emergency system and evaluated the effects of system-based professional training were investigated. Material and Methods A competency model for individuals in a public health emergency management system was developed, which contained 33 items with 5 domains. A competency-based intervention was performed. A total of 68 participants from 4 health emergency teams in Xinjiang, China were recruited and randomly divided into 2 groups: the intervention (N = 38) and control groups (N = 30). Participants in the intervention group received competency-based training, while those in the control group received no training. All participants responded to the COVID-19 activities. The competencies of medical staff in the 5 domains were then analyzed in the pre-intervention, post-first training, and post-COVID-19 intervention using a self-designed questionnaire. Results Participants’ competencies were at the middle level at baseline. After the first training, competencies in the 5 domains significantly improved in the intervention group; in the control group, there was a significant increase in professional quality compared in the pre-training. After the response to COVID-19, the mean scores of competencies in the 5 domains significantly increased in both the intervention and control groups compared with those in the post-first training. Psychological resilience scores were higher in the intervention group than in the control group, whereas no significant differences in competencies were found in other domains. Conclusions Competency-based interventions provided practice and showed a positive effect on improving the competencies of medical staff in public health teams. Med Pr. 2023;74(1)

Purpose: The aim of the article is to present the theoretical assumptions of the model of professional competencies in health care units. It was assumed that competences are a multidimensional concept and require an integrated approach that allows for the construction of a competency model that reflects their real complexity. A list of professional competencies will be presented, which will be subject to empirical verification in the course of future research by the authors in order to identify key competencies. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed lists of professional competencies (six domains) was created and are based on the analysis of healthcare competencies models the study of the literature - and the Authors’ observations of the analyzed entities. Findings: Presented model of professional competencies in health care units contains six domains with sub-competencies. The importance of assessing competences is undeniable. Competence recognition offers a way to develop workforce planning and career opportunities of practicing medical staff. Having an instrument that identifies existing competences and those that need to be acquired becomes significant for distinguishing the singularity of actions for a professional practice which is safe, humane and with no risk to the client, the medical staff or the health care organization. Originality/value: An identification the professional competencies of health care units managers significantly shaping competences of such organizations especially relevant in pandemic time.

In its broadest sense, how people function in the work environment is a point of interest for researchers from many scientific disciplines. Currently, research tends to focus increasingly on issues related to stress experienced in the workplace, various coping strategies and consequences manifested in many spheres of human life. Adverse working conditions can contribute to the emergence of the burnout syndrome, resulting, according to the classical concept, from a mismatch between the employees’ intentions and realities of the job caused by inadequate coping strategies. Professional burnout has diverse effects on wellbeing and health of employees. Firefighters are particularly exposed to the adverse impact of stress and professional burnout. This paper presents the phenomenon of professional burnout, an analysis of its causes, symptoms and consequences, as well as methods of its prevention. Original articles and case reports on firefighter burnout published from January 2002 to November 2022 were reviewed in Web of Science. The review identified the problem of burnout in the professional group of firefighters including potential directions for burnout prevention.
W najszerszym ujęciu funkcjonowanie człowieka w środowisku pracy jest punktem zainteresowania badaczy z wielu dyscyplin naukowych. Obecnie badania coraz częściej koncentrują się na zagadnieniach związanych ze stresem doświadczanym w miejscu pracy, różnymi strategiami radzenia sobie z nim oraz konsekwencjami przejawiającymi się w wielu sferach życia człowieka. Niekorzystne warunki pracy mogą przyczynić się do powstania zespołu wypalenia zawodowego, wynikającego, zgodnie z klasyczną koncepcją, z niedopasowania intencji pracowników do realiów pracy, spowodowanego nieadekwatnymi strategiami radzenia sobie. Wypalenie zawodowe ma szereg skutków dla samopoczucia i zdrowia pracowników. Strażacy są szczególnie narażeni na negatywne skutki stresu i wypalenia zawodowego. W artykule przedstawiono zjawisko wypalenia zawodowego, analizę jego przyczyn, objawów i konsekwencji, a także metody jego zapobiegania. Dokonano przeglądu oryginalnych artykułów i opisów przypadków dotyczących wypalenia zawodowego strażaków opublikowanych od stycznia 2002 r. do listopada 2022 r. w bazie Web of Science. W wyniku przeglądu określono problem wypalenia zawodowego w grupie zawodowej strażaków, a także możliwe kierunki profilaktyki wypalenia.

Objectives The specific job demands of the Prison Service (PS) may affect the health of officers. The job demands-resources model (JD-R) model was used to design a survey of the consequences of working subject to particular job demands. The aim was to gain an insight into the relationship between job demands, personal resources, occupational stress and burnout and selected health consequence indicators (such as behaviors associated with the consumption of alcohol, stress symptoms). Material and Methods A total of 1732 PS officers in Poland were surveyed. The following tools were used as part of the survey: the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ II), the Multidimensional Inventory for Assessing Coping Responses (COPE), the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and a form with a respondent’s particulars. Path analysis using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was performed. Results The assumed hypotheses were partially confirmed by the results. Out of 4 job demands categories only work pace turned out not to be a significant predictor of burnout and stress. For alcohol related behaviors, stress level was the only significant predictor, both as a direct and indirect effect taking into account job demands. It transpired that support from superiors rather than support from colleagues or self-efficacy was a significant moderator in the emotional demands – stress relationship. Limitations of the study and perspectives for its continuation are also presented herein. Conclusions Based on the obtained results it may be concluded that job demands and support from superiors do have an impact on stress in the PS group. This is also consistent with available reports in literature. At the same time stress is a significant predictor of alcohol related behaviors. Coping through the use of psychoactive substances was not a significant factor in statistical analyses and it has still not been subject to sufficient scientific analysis.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to present healthcare professionals’ opinions on their sense of health security in relation to their jobs in the pandemic situation and to assess effectiveness of the work environment management. Design/methodology/approach: Management of Polish healthcare institutions, due to a strategic role of this sector and its connection with public finance, has been a source of numerous problems for many years. All weaknesses of the healthcare system in terms of human resources and organisation have been clearly exposed in the time of COVID-19 pandemic. Being faced with it, healthcare institutions and their employees struggle with problems of a greater work-related burden, arduous working conditions and continued concerns about their health and life. The research was conducted in December 2020 on a representative sample of healthcare professionals with the aim to identify their opinions on functioning in the workplace during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the research purposes, the CATI technique was applied with a Likert scale-based questionnaire. Findings: The research findings outline the work environments of healthcare professionals during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic and their effects on the sense of security. Research limitations/implications: Due to the period of the research conduct, its results have a unique quality and enable depicting the current situation and problems of the medical community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the worldwide scale of the COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented situation considering its spread, the use of resources as well as organisational and political solutions, problem research literature on the subject was unavailable in the process of preparing the study. Practical implication: The conclusions of the research draw attention to the need of using modern technologies in strategic management of internal communication systems, especially during crises such as a pandemic. Originality/value: The results of the research give a unique picture of healthcare professionals’ opinions referring to sense of health security and the state of the health system during the pandemic.

The aim of this article is to provide quantitative information about occupational health and safety professionals' working conditions and professional independence. The data were obtained through questionnaires applied to employees in the field of occupational health and safety. The validity value of the questions in the questionnaires was calculated as 0.901. The obtained data were analyzed with descriptive statistical techniques. According to the results, the wages and job satisfaction level of occupational health and safety professionals are average, but below what it should be. Health and safety professionals are employed above legal limits. Some of them cannot adequately benefit from their rights such as overtime pay, annual leave, rest breaks and severance pay. On the other hand, there is no job security to ensure the professional independence of health and safety professionals.

Introduction/background: Nowadays realities of social life create the need for unified, fundamental mechanisms of forming the motivation of future managers for their comprehensive understanding of not only the economic processes, but also the peculiarities of human life. That’s why the particular importance becomes to improving the professional training of future managers in the context of forming their health-oriented management skills. Aim of the paper: To substantiate the neediness and features of formation the health-oriented management skills of students-future managers in Ukraine. Materials and methods: The research was conducted during 2020-2021. The study involved 345 persons from Lviv region (Ukraine): 320 persons aged from 25 to 55 years, who work in the organizations and 25 students of the third and fourth years of study, which are trained in the specialty “Management”). The following research methods were applied: theoretical analysis and synthesis of professional scientific literature, analysis of Internet resources, pedagogical observation, surveys (questionnaires). Results and conclusions: The research data indicate the neediness to change not only the structure, content, forms, and methods of the system of professional training of future managers for the formation of their competence in health-oriented management issues, but also to search the new, non-standard motivational factors. The educational system of training of future managers, which includes the mechanisms of formation their readiness for health- oriented management, should be specially structured and include certain motivational parts, components and indicators. Management which is based on a human-centred approach, focused on the fact that the highest value of the organization is not just human resources, but the health of each individual employee, we define as health-oriented management. Using of substantive theories of motivation for the training system in health-oriented management for the future management is a necessary condition for their successful future professional activity.

Autorki przedstawiają studencką inicjatywę edukacyjną On-line on-Soul, dla której bezpośrednim impulsem była zmiana formy kształcenia akademickiego w okresie narastania zagrożenia COVID-19. Merytorycznym punktem skupienia grupowej aktywności stała się możliwość podjęcia dyskusji nad konsekwencjami globalnego stanu izolacji dla zdrowia psychicznego osób i grup społecznych oraz jej prowadzenia w warunkach komunikacji zdalnej. Zainicjowany w kwietniu 2020 r. proces jest przykładem dobrej praktyki edukacji do pracy socjalnej, która – w zmienionych warunkach nowej codzienności – rozwija kluczowe kompetencje zawodowe: zdolność do współpracy, bliskości, otwartości oraz uczenia się i nadawania sensu sytuacjom kryzysowym.
The authors present the On-line on-Soul student education initiative, which was directly stimulated by the change of the form of academic education in the period of increasing COVID-19 threat. The substantive focus of group activity was the opportunity to discuss the consequences of the global state of isolation for the mental health of people and social groups, and to conduct it in the conditions of remote communication. The process, initiated in April 2020, is an example of good practice in education for social work, which – in the changed conditions of new everyday life – develops key professional competences: the ability to cooperate, closeness, openness as well as learning and giving meaning to crisis situations.

Niniejszy artykuł poświęcono wybranym problemom, dotyczącym reżimu odpowiedzialności zawodowej lekarzy. Mając na uwadze specyfikę zawodu lekarza oraz kierowane nierzadko pod jego adresem wyobrażenia społeczne (co de facto nie pozostaje obojętne z punktu widzenia samej istoty wspomnianego reżimu odpowiedzialności), podjęte rozważania rozpoczęto od analizy empirycznej, prezentującej społeczne oceny wobec osób wykonujących wspomniany zawód. W dalszej kolejności odwołano się do regulacji ustawy o izbach lekarskich. Przedmiotem szczegółowych rozważań uczyniono przesłanki odpowiedzialności zawodowej członków izb lekarskich, jak również normatywne wskazania rządzące wymiarem kary, orzekanej w przypadku popełnienia przewinienia zawodowego.
This article is devoted to selected problems concerning the regime of professional liability of doctors. Bearing in mind the specific nature of a doctor’s profession and often social ideas directed at it (which de facto does not remain indifferent from the point of view of the very essence of the aforementioned regime of liability), the considerations started with an empirical analysis, presenting social assessments towards people performing the said profession. Subsequently, reference was made to the regulations of the Act on Medical Chambers. The premises for professional liability of members of medical chambers, as well as normative indications governing the level of punishment imposed in the case of professional misconduct have been the subject of detailed consideration.

Międzynarodowe doświadczenia w zakresie pracy socjalnej w sektorze opieki zdrowotnej pokazują, że czynności wykonywane przez pracownika socjalnego wywierają znaczący wpływ na zdrowie obywateli i są konieczne dla poprawy dobrostanu społeczeństwa. Cel. Celem badań było przeanalizowanie zaawansowanych rozwiązań teoretycznych opracowanych za granicą, dotyczących szkolenia pracowników socjalnych służby zdrowia pod kątem zastosowania ich na Ukrainie. Materiały i metody. Wybrano, usystematyzowano i przeanalizowano 53 opracowania naukowe i naukowo-praktyczne dotyczące zagadnień filozoficznych, psychologicznych, pedagogicznych, medycznych oraz problemów pracowników socjalnych zatrudnionych w sektorze ochrony zdrowia. Na podstawie porównania i syntezy otrzymanych informacji dokonano ich uogólnienia, a wyniki przedstawiono w formie wniosków. Wyniki. Działania pracowników socjalnych zatrudnionych w systemie opieki zdrowotnej bazują na dwóch podstawowych grupach teorii – podstawowych, opierających się na rezultatach działań socjalnych, oraz tych adaptowanych z psychologii, psychiatrii, bioetyki, opieki pielęgniarskiej, opieki zdrowotnej, socjologii i administracji. Wnioski. W pracy socjalnej w sektorze opieki zdrowotnej najczęściej wykorzystywane są teorie zachowań zdrowotnych (model przekonań zdrowotnych, teoria działań celowych, zachowanie zaplanowane), teorie bazujące na relacjach społecznych (zachowania społeczne, zachowanie w trakcie korzystania z usług medycznych), a także model transteoretyczny. W szkoleniu pracowników socjalnych, zatrudnionych w systemie opieki zdrowotnej, ważne są zarówno teorie podstawowe jak i te adaptowane. W praktyce ważne jest ich wszechstronne zastosowanie, a także wiedza eklektyczna w odniesieniu do interdyscyplinarnego charakteru takiej pracy socjalnej.
Introduction. The international experience of social work in the field of health care shows that such activities of a social worker have a significant impact on the health of the population in the country and is necessary to improve the well-being of citizens. Aim. The goal of the research was to study progressive foreign advanced theoretical developments concerning the training of social workers in the health-care for the implementation of such practices in Ukraine. Material and methods. 53 units of scientific and scientific-practical sources of philosophical, psychological, pedagogical, medical content and problems of social work in the field of health were selected, systematized and analyzed. On the basis of comparison and synthesis of the received information, its generalization was made and presented in the form of conclusions Results. The activities of social workers in the field of health-care are based on two main groups of theories – basic, found on the results of social work practices, and adopted from psychology, psychiatry, bioethics, nursing care, health care, sociology, administration. Conclusions. In the practice of social workers in health care, health behavior theories (health belief model, theory of deliberate actions, planned behavior) and theories based on social networks (social behavior, behavior in the use of medical services), transtheoretical model are most often used. For the training of social workers in the field of health, both the basic and adopted theories are important; it is important in practice to be able to apply them in a comprehensive way, rely on eclectic knowledges in relation to the interdisciplinary nature of the activity.

has dramatically increased. The number of visits to EDs can be an important indicator of the quality of primary health care. Objectives. To analyse: 1) the frequency of admissions to EDs, 2) the type and number of medical procedures performed in EDs, and 3) the type and number of services provided by PHC in the Kedzierzyn-Kozle district. Material and methods. A retrospective analysis of the statistical data regarding services provided by PHC in the Kedzierzyn-Kozle district within the National Health Fund (NHF) and data from the hospital emergency department in Kedzierzyn-Kozle (Opole Province, Poland). Results. The results showed an annual increase in the number of hospitalisations (13,815 – 2012, 14,192 – 2013, 15,123 – 2014) and the number of medical procedures performed in the ED (mainly those from I–III categories), as well as the low rate of admission from the ED to ICU (Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care). There was an increase in the overall number of consultations given by a primary health care doctor and the total number of healthcare services provided at night and during holidays. Conclusions. Reducing the number of non-urgent visits to EDs can be achieved by making efforts to meet the needs of patients at the level of primary health care, in particular through better coordination of services provided by EDs and PHC and better motivation of primary care doctors to perform the role of gatekeeper to the health care system
