In our article we outline the development of the specialized Health Pedagogy programme at the University of Silesia, and students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of educational experience. Our presentation employs quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Using the institution monograph method we present quantitative data on the content of the learning programme and learning outcomes in Health Pedagogy. Document analysis covers 12 years, beginning with 2001 when the specialization was introduced in the University of Silesia. Using content analysis we present the learning outcomes, including knowledge, skills and competencies acquired by graduates in the first and second cycle degree programmes, according to the Bologna process. To complete these findings we present individual cases, based on interviews, as examples of the occupational path of our graduates.

Pedagogika zdrowia jest dziś traktowana w literaturze pedagogicznej jako subdyscyplina pedagogiki, w ramach której są tworzone teoretyczne podstawy edukacji zdrowotnej. Ma teoretyczne oparcie w klasycznej pedagogice społecznej. Przedmiot jej badań ma charakter interdyscyplinarny i obejmuje zagadnienia dotyczące społecznej rzeczywistości zdrowotnej, które są analizowane z perspektywy pedagogicznej na podbudowie założeń współczesnej filozofii zdrowia oraz w powiązaniu z osiągnięciami nauk medycznych i społecznych w obszarach związanych z profilaktyką i promocją zdrowia. W artykule zaprezentowano kształtowanie się teoretycznych podstaw praktyki pedagogicznej ukierunkowanej na cele zdrowotne oraz zarysowujące się współcześnie koncepcje i sposoby uprawiania pedagogiki zdrowia.
In pedagogical literature health pedagogy is trated as a subdiscipline of pedagogy, within which the theoretical foundations of modern health education are created. It has theoretical support in classical social pedagogy. The subject of research of health pedagogy is interdisciplinary and it covers issues related to a social health reality, which are analyzed from a pedagogical perspective and on the basis of the assumptions of modern philosophy of health and in connection with the achievements of medical and social sciences in the areas related to the protection and promotion of health. The article presents the formation of the theoretical foundations of pedagogical practice focused on health goals and the concepts and methods of practicing health pedagogy that are emerging today.

Historyczne i społeczno-kulturowe uwarunkowania zainteresowaniem problematyką zdrowotną w Niemczech oraz w naszym kraju wykazują odmienność. Jednak fakt wyodrębnienia w języku polskim i niemieckim takich terminów, jak: „pedagogika zdrowia” (Gesundheitspädagogik), „edukacja zdrowotna” (Gesundheitsbildung), „wychowanie zdrowotne” (Gesundheiterziehung) czy „oświata zdrowotna” (Gesundheitsaufklärung) sprzyja analizie porównawczej refleksji pedagogiki zdrowia w Polsce i krajach niemieckiego obszaru językowego. W piśmiennictwie anglojęzycznym wymienione terminy najczęściej są określane jednym pojęciem health education. Status pedagogiki zdrowia w Polsce i w Niemczech jest zbliżony nie tylko ze względu na analogie pojęciowe, ale także interdyscyplinarny charakter tego obszaru refleksji i badań. Inspiracją dla rozwoju pedagogiki zdrowia w naszym kraju mogą być implikacje praktyczne, które wykraczają poza edukację zdrowotną dzieci i młodzieży oraz profilaktykę realizowaną przez placówki opieki zdrowotnej. Pedagogika zdrowia w Niemczech znajduje coraz większe zastosowanie promocji zdrowia w miejscu pracy, co sprzyja zwiększeniu świadomości zdrowotnej, poprawie kultury zdrowotnej dorosłych, a także wzrost wydajności pracowników.
Pedagogy of health is a subdiscipline of educational sciences, which in Poland has its sources in the social pedagogy of Helena Radlińska. In a situation of social and civilization changes, it requires development and scientific strengthening. Interest in health is constantly growing, society's health problems are changing, the approach to health-related issues in science takes on an interdisciplinary dimension, knowledge on health protection and disease control is expanding, and access to health knowledge is conducive to increasing health awareness.In the search for opportunities to develop health pedagogy in Poland, it is worth referring to foreign experiences. Historical and socio-cultural conditions of interest in health issues in Germany and in our country show differentness. However, the fact of distinguishing in Polish and German terms such as: pedagogika zdrowia (Gesundheitspädagogik), edukacja zdrowotna (Gesundheitsbildung),  wychowanie zdrowotne (Gesundheiterziehung), czy oświata zdrowotna (Gesundheitsaufklärung)  favors comparative reflection of German language pedagogy in Poland and countries. In English-language literature, these terms are most often referred to as one concept of health education.The status of health pedagogy in Poland and Germany is similar not only because of conceptual analogies, but also because of the interdisciplinary nature of this area of reflection and research. The inspiration for the development of health pedagogy in our country can be practical implications that go beyond the health education of children and adolescents and prevention carried out by health care facilities. Health pedagogy in Germany is increasingly used in the promotion of health at work, which contributes to increasing health awareness, improving the health culture of adults, as well as increasing employee productivity.

Cel badań. Celem badań jest wyjaśnienie zależności upowszechniania wzorów kultury zdrowotnej przez nauczycieli od ich poczucia koherencji i zachowań stanowiących o stylu życia. Założono, że nauczyciele pełniący rolę liderów procesu oraz nauczyciele wspierający nie różnią się dojrzałością zachowań zdrowotnych. Zachowania te są naśladowane przez uczniów i prowadzą do internalizacji wzorów kultury zdrowotnej. Materiał i metody. Zastosowano sondaż diagnostyczny z wykorzystaniem kwestionariusza zachowań zdrowotnych oraz kwestionariusza orientacji życiowych SOC-29. Badaną grupę 98 nauczycieli podzielono na trzy podgrupy: posiadających formalne kompetencje nauczyciela zdrowia, ubiegających się o nie w trybie studiów podyplomowych oraz kandydujących do zdobycia w trybie studiów podyplomowych formalnych kompetencji pedagogicznych. Wyniki. Zarejestrowane przejawy zachowań zdrowotnych można uznać za poprawne, jednak nie gwarantują one uzyskania pozytywnych efektów oddziaływania wychowawczego za pomocą przykładu. Poczucie koherencji u badanych jest na tle innych grup zawodowych wysokie. Wnioski. Wykazano związki stanu zachowań zdrowotnych oraz poczucia koherencji z rolą pełnioną przez nauczycieli w procesie wychowania zdrowotnego. Istnieje też zależność między poziomem ich poczucia koherencji a wybranymi przejawami zachowań zdrowotnych.
Background. The purpose of the study is to explain the dependence of teachers’ participation in the dissemination of health culture patterns from their sense of coherence and lifestyle behaviours. It was assumed that the teachers who acted as process leaders and those supporting them did not differ in the maturity of their health behaviours. The teachers’ health behaviours are followed by their pupils and lead to the internalization of health culture patterns. Material and methods. The authors applied a diagnostic survey, with a health behaviour questionnaire and the SOC-29 life-orientation questionnaire. The studied group of 98 teachers was divided into three subgroups: those who had formal competence of a health teacher, those applying for the competence during postgraduate studies, and those who applied for formal pedagogical competencies during postgraduate education. Results. The registered manifestations of health behaviours can be considered as correct; they do not guarantee, however, positive effects of the pedagogical influence by means of own example. As compared with other professional groups, the sense of coherence among the studied teachers is high. Conclusions. The research showed a relationship between the status of health behaviours and the sense of coherence on one hand and the role played by the teachers in the process of health education on the other. A relationship between the level of their sense of coherence and selected health behaviours was also observed

A lot of data indicate that people who experienced malignant tumours are more anxious than the healthy population. However, we should pay attention to inner mental resources of oncological patients that can be a buffer against disorders of mental health. Education of patients helps them make normal activities. The education, called pedagogy of health, is increasingly seen as an essential element of the holistic behaviour of therapeutic effect. The aim of this study is to indicate correlations between the ways of coping with difficulties and the forms of emotional health by patients after mastectomy, as compared to the control group. The results indicate that in the groups of people that experienced malignant tumours differing in forms of emotional health, the factors affecting forms of psychological health are connected with the ways of coping with difficulties. The health pedagogy impact should allow for differences between oncological patients resulting from the forms of their emotional health. Education of patients should be oriented towards teaching active, focused on a problem ways of coping with malignant tumours.
Wiele danych świadczy o tym, że osoby dotknięte rakiem są bardziej lękowe i depresyjne niż zdrowa populacja. Jednakże należy zwrócić uwagę na wewnętrzne zasoby psychiczne pacjentów onkologicznych, które mogą pełnić funkcję bufora chroniącego przed zaburzeniami zdrowia psychicznego. Podejmowaniu, mimo choroby, normalnej aktywności sprzyja, określana mianem pedagogiki zdrowotnej, edukacja pacjentów. Celem podjętych badań było wskazanie zależności między formami zdrowia emocjonalnego a sposobami radzenia sobie ze stresem w grupie kobiet po mastektomii i w grupie kobiet, które nie były dotknięte chorobą nowotworową. Wyniki badań wskazują, że w grupach osób dotkniętych chorobą nowotworową różniących się formami zdrowia emocjonalnego czynniki decydujące o formie zdrowia psychicznego są powiązane ze sposobami radzenia sobie ze stresem. Oddziaływania z obszaru pedagogiki zdrowotnej powinny uwzględniać różnice istniejące między pacjentami onkologicznymi, wynikające z formy zdrowia emocjonalnego. Edukacja pacjentów powinna być nastawiona na uczenie aktywnych, nastawionych na problem sposobów radzenia sobie z chorobą nowotworową.

Ukazuje rysujące się przy tym problemy, związane z szacowaniem dorobku przeszłości, określeniem specyfiki pokolenia, zawartości archiwum pedagogicznego i dwoistości widocznych współcześnie w pedagogice zdrowia.
The text refers to the debates of the 10th All‑Poland Pedagogical Congress (organized in Warsaw by the Polish Pedagogical Association), and instigated by Lech Witkowski as part of the Special Symposium on the subject: The Heritage of Ideas and the Dramatic Fates of the Leading Figures of Polish Pedagogy in the 20th Century: History, Analysis, and Criticism of the Intergenerational Ties and Breaks-offs. The study is an attempt to show the possible impulses resulting from the duality paradigm for broadening the scope of modern health pedagogy. It also shows issues that arise, which are related to estimating the achievements of the past, determining the specifics of the generation, the content of the pedagogical archive, and duality visible today in health pedagogy.

Opis:
The article portrays the aims of health‑related education at schools and the necessity of educating teachers in the area of health pedagogy. The first part introduced the health condition of German children and youth from the perspective of social inequality, to underline the key part of the school in the context of health, as an institution which has the possibility to get to all social groups in the important stages of growing up. The second part of the article talks about the “Good healthy school” model, which initiates the health‑related education to the program of educating teachers at the Paderborn University. Further, the method of short videos was represented and used in the seminars of preventive treatment and health‑related education in the thought of empowerment and participation and the notion of „learning by hand, head and heart” (Pestalozzi). The conclusion of the article displays the important role of the health‑related pedagogy in teacher education and its advantages, such as: increasing the teacher’s competence, strengthening the management of health at schools and at the same time increasing the quality of education.
Artykuł podnosi cele edukacji prozdrowotnej w szkołach oraz konieczność kształcenia nauczycieli w obszarze pedagogiki zdrowia. W pierwszej części został przedstawiony stan zdrowia dzieci i młodzieży w Niemczech z perspektywy nierówności społecznej, aby w kontekście zdrowia podkreślić kluczową rolę szkoły jako instytucji, która poprzez wychowanie i edukację ma możliwość dotarcia do wszystkich grup społecznych w ważnym etapie dorastania dzieci i młodzieży. W drugiej części artykułu omówiony został model „Dobrej zdrowej szkoły”, który wdraża edukację prozdrowotnądo programu kształcenia nauczycieli na Uniwersytecie Paderborn. Zaprezentowana została także metoda filmów krótkometrażowych wykorzystywana w ramach seminariów profilaktyki oraz prozdrowotnej edukacji w myśl zasady empowerment and participation oraz idei „uczenia ręką, głową oraz sercem” (Pestalozzi). Konkluzją artykułu jest przedstawienie ważnej roli pedagogiki prozdrowotnej w kształceniu nauczycieli wszystkich przedmiotów oraz płynących z niej korzyści: podwyższeniakompetencji nauczycieli, wzmacniania managementu zdrowia w szkołach, a tym samym podwyższenia jakości edukacji w szkołach.

The purpose of this paper is to explore and analyze three aspects of the relationship between general pedagogy and Health education. Two different doctoral dissertations on Health education, claimed to be written from different scientific positions (hermeneutic and positivistic), were analyzed from science--philosophical, knowledge-theoretical and methodological points of view. The analysis showed that none of the dissertations contained any deeper discussion on science-philosophical or knowledge-theoretical issues and that both of the dissertations were written mainly in the hermeneutic tradition. The reason for this is probably that Health education, especially promotive Health education, handles divergent questions that seldom, or never, can be handled with positivistic methods. One consequence of this is that the results of research on promotive Health education rarely, or never, are normative and can tell how to teach about health in a specific educational situation. Instead the results can be used as a background for didactic reflection whey planning and realizing Health education initiatives. Another consequence is that the present trend with demand for evidence based Health education, can be questioned! Because promotive Health education is so heavily loaded with divergent questions, and because pedagogical research, according to Habermas, has an emancipatory or critical “knowledge interest”. Research can explain what is going on in one situation but not predict what will happen in a similar, but other situation! Therefore this paper argues that the idea of evidence based, promotive health education is hard, or impossible, to realize.

Opis:
This article presents selected factors conditioning the sense of coherence among university students. Results were obtained after analysis of statistical data collected in a group of 467 students. Antonovsky’s Sense of Coherence Questionnaire (SOC-29) was used in the research. The results obtained showed a predominance of a moderate level of the sense of coherence in the group of studied students. The study confirmed the existence of a dependency between the sense of coherence and the sex, year of study, and civil status of the studied persons. The other two variables, i.e., course of studies and declared level of religiosity, only showed certain tendencies. The results presented in this paper confirmed the need to shape coherence through education and socialization as a socially significant personal predisposition. The sense of coherence facilitates both self-reflection and self-development in the individual. Conclusions formulated on the basis of the obtained results point to the necessity of taking up a contemporary pedagogical challenge, which is health education. An additional recommendation is to enrich educational programs with activities the goal of which is to create a high sense of coherence in their recipients, which, by definition, should have pro-health consequences for a wide group of beneficiaries.

For this purpose, a systematic review of research on the relationship between adolescents' use of social media and their mental health was conducted. The systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA standards. Its aim was to identify all studies exploring the association between adolescents' engagement in social media use and the state of their mental health, specifically targeting individuals aged 12-18 years. The EBSCOhost search engine was employed for this purpose, and databases such as Academic Search Ultimate, Education Source Ultimate, Applied Science & Technology Source Ultimate, Medline, Eric, and APA PsycArticle were searched from May to June 2023, aiming to identify studies published between 2013 and 2023. A total of 25 articles were identified from 16,787 records and subjected to evaluation. The results presented in these articles did not provide clear evidence for a linear, strong, and positive association between adolescents' use of social media and the occurrence of mental health problems. The majority of the evaluated research projects had several limitations, therefore it seems justified to conduct further studies with significantly improved measurement procedures, which could yield valuable and clinically relevant data on the relationship between social media use and the mental health of young individuals.

The paper contributes to mental health studies of children and youth’s suicide and suicide attempts. Inspired by early sociological concepts such as Durkheim’s contribution to understanding suicide through social anomy, we ran statistical analysis of worldwide suicide rates and tested for correlation between suicide rates amongst children and youth and “Big Data” on social, educational, economic and environmental factors around the world. Amongst them we considered 88 variables including Human Development Index (HDI) and its indicators, rates of religious observance and denomination, and even the hours of sunlight and the average temperature in each country. The statistical section of the paper is preceded by the results of analysis from the anonymised mental health records of adolescents with suicidal and self-harming tendencies. The data came from a Polish psychotherapist and was accompanied by in-depth analysis of contributing factors from purposely selected, attempted suicide cases, in order to enrich the statistical perspective with biological, individual, environmental and situational factors. Finally, we identify trigger factors and protective indicators, derived from both the statistical and the empirical part of our study.

The article presents the development, directions and areas of scientific research conducted by scholars at the Department of Social Pedagogy at the University of Silesia in Katowice from the beginning of the Department’s existence (1980/1981) until 2018. The conducted analyses emphasize first of all the expansion of research areas and the successive formation of the so-called “school” of social pedagogy characteristic of our academic centre. The areas of interest of the Department’s research staff correspond to the cognitive and research needs resulting from the current socio-cultural transformations that are significant for the course of socialization and upbringing processes. The results of scientific research have been reflected, among others, in scientific publications (monographs and articles), and the titles of the most important ones are given in the article.

The coronavirus pandemic affects the whole world. This situation is a very challenging time for all humanity and social services no less. The present article explores how care and different forms of support can or should be offered to young people in the post-COVID-19 youth work. The objective of this paper is to reflect on how social work practitioners can adapt their daily clinical practice by focusing their interventions on the social pedagogical dimensions of social work. The article presents a generalised discussion of practice logics in social work and social pedagogy. Because of the meanings derived from knowledge on the importance of relationships between the helper and the help receiver, social practices in the post-COVID-19 world need to consider social pedagogical expertise in social work practice and the development of preventive assistance for young populations. This effort has been prepared as a part of the project “Social Professionals for Youth Education in the context of European Solidarity”.

The subject of the author’s discussion is to present the Snoezelen as a method supporting comprehensive human development, which can be used in the therapy and prevention of mental health. The starting point for considerations is the currently observed upward trend in the scope of the occurrence of difficulties in mental functioning, especially in Poland, affecting an ever wider group of people. The use of therapeutic support dedicated to individual patients was presented. The search for new solutions in the field of optimization of psychological and therapeutic help was considered, due to the growing need to mobilize interdisciplinary therapeutic activities. The Snoezelen method was indicated as a promising form of therapeutic support with high international effectiveness in various recipients. The author points out the need to include the Snoezelen among the fundamental methods of therapy, at the same time, reflecting the need to expand research in this area.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie problematyki wychowania do zdrowego stylu życia na wybranych przykładach dziedzictwa kultury zachowań społeczeństwa polskiego, jako ideacyjnego fundamentu działań aplikacyjnych w kulturze ponowoczesnej na przełomie XX/XXI wieku. Problem badań jest osadzony w paradygmacie interpretatywnym nauk społecznych, humanistycznych. W procesie badawczym zastosowano metodę badań jakościowych: jakościowa analiza tekstu/analiza jakościowa dokumentów, w której istotne są hermeneutyczne rozumienie oraz interpretacja tekstu źródłowego. Podstawę analiz stanowią historyczne źródła drukowane (materiały pierwotne) oraz opracowania naukowe dotyczące problematyki wskazanej w tytule.
The purpose of this paper is to present the issue of education for a healthy lifestyle based on examples of the Polish society cultural behaviours as the ideation foundation of actions applied in the post-modern culture at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The problem of research is set in the interpretative paradigm of humanistic, social sciences. A qualitative method was applied in the process of scientific research (the qualitative analysis of a text/qualitative analysis of documents), in which a hermeneutic understanding and source text interpretation is relevant. The analyses are based on historical printed sources (original materials) and scientific works concerning the issue indicated in the title.
