Military metaphors matter. In war as in peace, the language of warfare serves communicative purposes for it appeals to fear to persuade or dissuade. Given the analogy between the experience of disease and the enterprise of war, public health communication has often been receptive to the use of military jargon and war-related metaphors. The global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year evidenced the role and value of the warfare metaphor in framing the understanding of the novel infectious disease and informing pandemic response plans to this unprecedented and multifaceted crisis. The versatile function of the warfare metaphor poses, however, more problems than it solves. The paper explores the multiple correspondences between the source domain of war and the target domain of disease to explain the merits and limits of the warfare framing of the COVID-19 disease. It offers also an analysis of the collocational properties of the ‘coronavirus’ and ‘COVID-19’ lexemes to show the visceral relationship between treating diseases and waging wars. The fear-driven implications of such conceptual link motivate the use of alternative, hope-oriented metaphors to reframe the COVID-19 disease.

Celem artykułu jest analiza tekstów zamieszczonych na portalu Twój Styl, oznaczonych tagiem „medycyna”, z perspektywy wykorzystanych w nich chwytów retorycznych. Zebrany materiał został podzielony ze względu na gatunek wypowiedzi (celowy wybór konwencji), następnie poddany analizie z uwagi na zastosowanie językowych i pozajęzykowych środków, które mają na celu oddziaływanie na odbiorców (od przyciągnięcia ich uwagi po nakłonienie do proponowanych postaw). Dzięki tak przeprowadzonemu badaniu możliwe było nakreślenie strategii komunikacyjnych, służących pozyskiwaniu odbiorców przez autorów tekstów. Główną konkluzją wynikającą z przeprowadzonego badania jest fakt intencyjnego, ukierunkowanego chęcią realizacji funkcji nakłaniającej ukształtowania treści dotyczących zdrowia.
The article offers an analysis of texts posted on the Twój Styl website tagged as pertaining to “medicine” from the perspective of rhetorical strategies deployed therein. The research material has been divided into categories on the basis of the character of the statement (conscious choice of convention) and subsequently analyzed with the view to capturing the linguistic and extra-linguistic tools employed to affect the recipients (from capturing the readers’ attention to propagating specific attitudes). The study conceived in such a way enables an overview of communication strategies used by the authors to attract the recipients. The main conclusion of the study is that health-related content is intentionally shaped in such a way that would persuade the addressees to embrace particular behaviours.

Background Drug-resistant bacteria are one of the main reasons of deaths worldwide. A significant group of these bacteria are carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE). The goal of this study was to develop a diagnostic and therapeutic model targeted at asymptomatic carriers of CPE. Material and Methods A team of experts from different branches connected to health care, discussing the topic based on the data collected from previous research. Working sessions were dispersed between June and December 2022. The consensus has been reached via repeated discussion and literature search. Results The facility where CPE are detected is required to create an alert pathogen note and to notify sanitary-epidemiological station and National Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Microorganisms – neither these institutions, nor the patient are required to notify the primary care physician. In primary care clinics, it is possible to work towards breaking the transmission of CPE by educating patients with CPE and persons who were in contact with them, and to undertake actions in order to look for patients with risk factors for CPE colonisation. In order to improve communication between individual levels of the health care system, standardised information could be introduced to the discharge note about a case of CPE, which will be electronically transmitted to the primary care facility. It might contribute to effective combating of the spread of CPE, by serving as a source of knowledge and education for patients and by checking the patient’s risk factors, which will improve the performance of tests for CPE colonisation. Conclusions The established model of good practice requires a change of legal regulations and its implementation, which will reduce the spread of CPE in health care facilities and will enable its future improvement.

Celem artykułu było określenie, jakie postawy wobec szczepionek przejawiają użytkownicy sieci w dobie pandemii. Przyjęto, że działania internautów mieszczą się w założeniach o aktywności użytkowników mediów, memy internetowe zaś są jednym ze sposobów manifestacji stosunku nadawców do określonych kwestii. W artykule skupiono się na teoriach aktywnego użytkownika mediów, przybliżono także zagadnienie memów internetowych jako kluczowej jednostki w prowadzonym badaniu. Materiałem do badań były komunikaty opublikowane na portalu Demotywatory.pl, które poddano analizie zawartości. Zebrany materiał podzielono ze względu na związek z koronawirusem. Następnie poszukiwano odpowiedzi na pytania o postawy internautów – czy są zwolennikami, czy przeciwnikami szczepień, skupiono się także na wydźwięku poszczególnych przekazów. Uzyskane wyniki pozwalają na określenie stosunku wybranej grupy do problemu szczepień, uświadamiają ponadto, że często kwestie zdrowotne są przyczynkiem do szerszej dyskusji (krytyki) na płaszczyźnie komunikowania politycznego.
The aim of this article is to discuss the attitudes exhibited by internet users to vaccines during the pandemic. It is assumed here that the activities of internet users fall within the general category of the activity of media users, while memes are a way to manifest the users’ attitude to specific issues. The article employs the active audience theory and elaborates on the phenomenon of internet memes as a key category of research. The research material comprises messages posted on Demotywatory.pl that are subject to content analysis. The material is first categorized on the basis of its connection to the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, the internet users’ attitudes are determined – whether they support or reject vaccinations – and the implications of particular messages are analysed. The research results make it possible to pinpoint the attitude of a given group to the issue of vaccination. Further, they show that health issues are often a starting point for a broader discussion (and critique) on the level of political communication.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy zawartości telewizyjnych reklam farmaceutyków w kontekście peryferyjnej drogi perswazji. Badania przeprowadzono na podstawie 4052 spotów wyemitowanych w trzech ogólnopolskich stacjach telewizyjnych w listopadzie 2020 roku i styczniu 2021 roku. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników wykazano, że w przeważającym stopniu reklamy związane z tą grupą produktów nie opierają się na odwołaniach do medycyny. Autorzy tych przekazów rzadko wykorzystują obraz przedstawicieli zawodów medycznych jako ekspertów. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych analiz nie stwierdzono również kreowania narracji z wykorzystaniem takich narzędzi perswazji jak sceny nawiązujące do środowiska medycznego oraz specjalistyczne słownictwo. Zebrany materiał badawczy wykazał, że rolę autorytetu w reklamach leków OTC, suplementów diety oraz wyrobów medycznych bardzo często spełniają członkowie rodziny i przyjaciele. Najczęściej wykorzystywanym rodzajem scen są przestrzenie nawiązujące do życia codziennego. Na podstawie przeprowadzonego badania wskazano na nowe trendy zaobserwowane w telewizyjnych reklamach farmaceutyków, które wynikają zarówno z uwarunkowań prawnych, jak i pogłębiającej się mediatyzacji w obszarze medycyny.
The article presents the results of the content analysis of TV commercials for pharmaceuticals in the peripheral way of persuasion. The research was based on 4,052 spots broadcast by three TV stations in November 2020 and January 2021. The obtained results showed that, to a large extent, advertisements related to this group of products are not based on references to medicine. The authors of these reports rarely use the image of medical professionals as experts. The analysis also did not show creating a narrative using persuasion tools such as scenes referring to the medical environment and specialized vocabulary. The collected research material has been demonstrated that family members and friends often play the role of authority in advertising OTC drugs, dietary supplements, and medical devices. The most frequently used type of scenes are spaces related to everyday life. Based on the conducted research, new trends were identified in televised Natalia Moczoł 114 advertisements for pharmaceuticals, resulting from both legal conditions and the deepening mediatisation in medicine.

Given that organ transplant is a standard medical technology admitted in medical practice, and taking into consideration that Polish transplantology is regarded among the most advanced in the world one should expect to find similarly high levels of acceptance in interviewees asked for their opinion on vital organ transplantation and their willingness to donate a paired organ ex vivo, or a vital organ ex mortuo in order to rescue the life of a recipient with a missing vital organ. The paper presents research build on the societal assessment of vital organ donation and transplant policies in Poland with the focus on students. Data have been collected at three different universities (Boratyński et al., Questionnaire on the Bases of Transplantation Medicine 2016/7). Various assessments concerning a vital organ donation have been observed. The authors discuss educational factors contributing to these variety including factual knowledge and ethical issues.

The article discusses problems arising in communication between a health care professional (doctor, nurse, medical rescuer, dentist, physiotherapist, pharmacist) and the patient. The author indicates the asymmetry of these relations, shows the difference between the two ways of communication – authoritarian and partner, and tries to study and describe the obstacles that hinder the patient–doctor relationship. Based on individual examples, she tries to show how contemporary media, especially the press, undertake and implement this topic.
Artykuł omawia problemy pojawiające się w komunikacji pomiędzy pracownikiem służby zdrowia (lekarzem, pielęgniarką/pielęgniarzem, ratownikiem medycznym, stomatologiem, rehabilitantem, farmaceutą) a pacjentem. Wskazuje na asymetrię owych relacji, pokazuje różnicę pomiędzy dwoma sposobami komunikacji – autorytarnym i partnerskim. Próbuje zdiagnozować i opisać przeszkody, które utrudniają relację pacjent–lekarz. Na pojedynczych przykładach starano się pokazać, w jaki sposób współczesne media, przede wszystkim prasa, podejmują i realizują niniejszą tematykę.

North Cameroon displays nearly sixty local languages for an estimated 3,500,000 people. Such a multilingualism is offset by the use of a major trade language, Fulfulde or Fula (spoken by Fulɓe or Fulani), which allows basic exchanges to take place in many settings. Owing to increased rates of school attendance, French has been taking on a greater but still limited role in interethnic communication. The question of language comes immediately to the fore in any medical consultation, yet there are also prior cultural factors in play which have a strong impact on the procedure.

Mobile Telecommunication is one of the fastest growing technologies in the world. The effects of its high frequencies and complex modulations to the exposed population are considered in this paper. Experimental studies examining a variety of effects on all levels of the organism, ranging from effects on single cells to effects which manifest themselves as reactions of the entire body, there have been a number of epidemiological studies in order to establish the possible causal correlations between higher exposures to HF EMFs. Recommendations on the reduction of the effects of EMFs of Mobile Telecommunication on humans was presented.

W artykule poruszono problematykę związaną z rolą i specyfiką czasopism branżowych skierowanych do środowiska medycznego. Periodyki, o których mowa, stanowią organ prasowy reaktywowanego po 1989 r. samorządu lekarskiego w Polsce, a zatem przynależą także do przestrzeni tzw. mediów lokalnych i regionalnych. Szczególnej analizie poddano historię, strukturę, misję oraz rozwój pisma „Pro Medico”, wydawanego przez Śląską Izbę Lekarską w Katowicach. Jego ewolucja (od 1989 r.) jest znakomitym przykładem profesjonalizacji regionalnej prasy branżowej, a także skutecznej współpracy ze środowiskiem medialnym.
The article discusses the problems associated with the role and the peculiar nature of specialised periodicals devoted to the medical community. The periodicals in question constitute a press organ of the medical self-government which was reinstated after 1989, therefore they also belong to the area of the so-called local and regional area. A particularly in-depth analysis was conducted upon the history, the structure, the mission and the development of the periodical known as “Pro Medico”, published by the Silesian Medical Council in Katowice, whose evolution (since 1989) aptly exemplifies the professionalisation of the regional specialised press, as well as the efficient collaboration with the media community.

Regardless of how the contemporary young generation is described, there is no doubt that their permanent connection to the Internet and an incredible expertise in using information and communication technologies are one of the features that define those who grow up at the present time. Such strong involvement in digital media entails a number of health and development consequences for children and teenagers. In order to minimize the potential risks and negative effects of new media, it is essential to take action aimed at increasing awareness in terms of positive and negative aspects of using digital devices as well as at gaining abilities to use them in a way that is the most optimal and favourable for health. Currently, this issue constitutes a great challenge for teachers, parents, and carers for whom implementing health-seeking attitudes and behaviours of the young generation may be, taking into consideration the attractiveness of electronic media and virtual world, an enormously difficult task.

ObjectivesIn the Czech Republic, an outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID‑19) has been decelerated by quickly adopting strict and strongly limiting government measures. In this study, the authors present the preliminary results (April 1–5, 2020) of a public risk perception study of COVID‑19.Material and MethodsThe online questionnaire survey was announced in the national TV and radio stations with the nationwide coverage. Respondents were recruited through the website of the University of Ostrava during the first 5 days of the survey (N = 7966). The data covered risk perception with a focus on physical and psychological aspects, the current socio-economic situation and adaptation to the lockdown. The authors used Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests, as well as ordered logistic regression, with a significance level of 5% using STATA version 15.ResultsFrom the total sample of the respondents aged 40 years on average (a range of 15–87 years), the present study shows that women (p < 0.001) and elderly people (p < 0.001) perceived the health risk related to COVID‑19 as significantly worse than others. Older people (>60 years) perceived their mental health as significantly better than younger participants (p < 0.001). Most of the respondents assessed the adopted measures as adequate (71%) and believed in their effectiveness (69.7%).ConclusionsThis study contributes to understanding the risk perception as a public response to the COVID‑19 pandemic.

Miejscowość Szczawnica, usytuowana na granicy Beskidu Sądeckiego i Pienin, stała się na początku XIX w. uzdrowiskiem. Wiązało się to z napływem turystów kuracyjnych. W przeciwną stronę rozchodziły się produkty uzyskane w uzdrowisku, m.in. wody mineralne. Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą ukazania stanu komunikacji drogowej oraz wodnej na odcinku Krościenko nad Dunajcem – Szczawnica i jego wpływu na wybrane aspekty funkcjonowania uzdrowiska.
The town of Szczawnica, situated on the border of the Beskid Sądecki and the Pieniny Mountains, became a health resort at the beginning of the 19th century. It was connected with the influx of curative tourists and outflow of products obtained in the health resort, e.g. mineral water. This article is an attempt to show the condition of road and water transport on the section Krościenko nad Dunajcem-Szczawnica and its impact on selected aspects of functioning of the health resorts.

The application of new technologies in health units suggests the materialization of an advanced Electronic Health Record as a central axis in medical information management. The aim of present study is to point out the position Information and Communications Technology has in the health field and how it can play a major role in the materialization of an advanced Electronic Health Record, offering major filing capacity in small volume, while strong huge medical data, based on international standards which are directly accessible and processable.

Young adulthood is a critical period because it is the time when young people begin to live on their own, and adopt health behaviours which can influence their lifestyle and health status. In social practice there are many community belongings and community-ba-sed support systems and programs in health, which aim to increase young adults’ health literacy and offer learning possibilities and support services.The study focuses on the education and the literacy as determinants of health, seve-ral fields of health education and health promotion related to young adults, elements and determinants of health culture, the links between health and learning, adults’ interest and claims related to learning process, methods, topics.In my research I made a survey of learning methods and contents with the help of the analysis of the scientific literature and by questionnaires. I examined young adults’ (18 to 30) concepts of health and healthy lifestyle, motivations, forms of communication, learningmethods and participation in community platforms of health. We use the results of this research to improve programs that support young people’s learning activities for health.
