Investigations of social pedagogy are nowadays more and more frequently focused on areas which cover a wider context and go beyond one’s own scientific discipline. There is diagnostic research on recognizing health state of certain social groups or communities. The article presents the research results of subjective assessment of health state of the residents of Tychy. However, it is only a part of a larger project which began in April 2017, whose goal is to create Social and pedagogic model of local diagnosis and social participation in terms of health protection and promotion. The conclusions reached may contribute to actions aimed at increasing the health potential of local communities.

The aim of the study was to investigate and compare the health behaviours of patients with cirrhosis. The study was conducted from February to June 2012. Before starting the study, the consent was received by the Bioethics Committee at the Medical University of Lublin. The group of 92 patients with cirrhosis was examined, in Świętokrzyskie, Lubelskie and Mazowieckie voivodeships. The main criteria of selection were: known cirrhosis during the hospital treatment and acceptance for participation in the study. The Health Behaviour Inventory (IZZ) by Juczyński was extracted in the study. It contains 24 statements that describe the various types of health-related behaviours and are divided into 4 categories describing health behaviours. For the purposes of the evaluation such behaviours as: proper eating habits, proactive behaviours, health practices and positive mental attitude have been defined. The study group was characterized by average health behaviors, the results were within the 5 and 6 Sten. Studies have shown a higher intensity of health behaviors in the category of a positive mental attitude and proactive behaviour, while less intensity was visible in the category of proper eating habits and health practices. It has been shown that there are statistically significant differences between health behaviour, gender and age of the respondents. Women had significantly higher intensity of correct eating habits and proactive behaviours. Respondents aged 51 years old or older had the best health behaviours in all the categories of health behaviours. The study showed no statistically significant differences between health behaviour and the time of diagnosis, place of residence and education of the respondents.

The issue of eating behaviour may be considered both from the perspective of medical and social science. Unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity (PA) are well known risk factors for the appearance of many chronic diseases in adulthood. Along with sedentary lifestyle they are the main cause of the increasing prevalence of obesity in adolescents. The aim of this paper is to present eating habits of students in light of Polish and international research within different variables. Polish and international research conducted on a possibly large study material were used for comparison. It can be concluded that there are many irregularities with reference to eating behaviours. The most common nutrition mistakes made by teenagers are not eating breakfast and snacking between meals (usually sweets, chips, fast-food products).

Opis:
The built environment, which refers to human-made or modified features of the physical neighbourhood, such as homes, schools, workplaces, or parks and recreational areas, undoubtedly has a great impact on our lifestyles and health behaviours. The objective of this paper is a review of the literature on the correlations between neighbourhood environment and weight status of local residents. This paper presents factors in the built environment which may be related to overweight and obesity prevalence among local residents, resulting in changes in energy balance and affecting BMI. The focus is especially on the relationship between the distance from home to parks and green spaces and physical activity levels, and between the access to fast food restaurants and BMI status or obesity prevalence among residents. The results of recent studies are inconsistent, primarily because of several limitations and methodological problems, and due to multifactorial and complex relationships between the built environment and lifestyle. However, with the still unsolved problem of the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity, even small changes in individual health behaviour may be important and have a positive impact on the reduction in BMI over time. Therefore, all activities aimed at shaping neighbourhood environments in ways which facilitate healthy food choices and create opportunities for as well as encourage physical activity should be supported.

Introduction: Health education is the child of medicine and pedagogy, and they share a common focus on humans. The aim of this study was to assess the preferred behaviours associated with health as well as the health locus of control of the tested patients.Materials and methods: The study included 300 patients from surgical wards (group I) and 300 from non-surgical wards (group II), studying them using the Health Behaviour Inventory (HBI) and the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC) scales. Results: For the six statements contained in the Sanitary Behaviours Letter concerning proper nutrition, the surveyed patients received the lowest average values. Among the preventive behaviours, participants reported that they complied with medical recommendations, conducted settled family and social life, and reduced their smoking, but that they did not attach sufficient importance to rest or weight control. In relation to the four examined categories of behaviour, general indicators of the severity of health behaviour did not differ significantly between the groups, which both reported a low level of health behaviour. The majority of women expressed the conviction that their health depends on themselves, demonstrating internal health control, while men tended to claim that their health was dependent on fate or luck. Inhabitants of rural areas exhibited internal control and blamed their own health behaviour for their well-being. Urban residents, on the other hand, showed a stronger belief in the influence of others on their health. Conclusions: The majority of patients showed poor attention to health matters, especially in terms of preferred health practices. However, the less education the participants had and the worse their financial situation grew, the stronger the care for their own health became.Key words:Health behaviours, patients, HBI, MHLC

Introduction and objective. The nursing profession entails many negative factors and high risk of chronic diseases, including overweight and obesity. The aim of the study is to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and health enhancing behaviours in Polish female nurses, and associations between overweight and 4 groups of such behaviours, age and shift work. Materials and method. The analysis covered data obtained through cross-sectional survey carried out in a group of 994 nurses with an average age of 43. The analysis covered answers about 29 health-enhancing behaviours divided into 4 categories (subscales): 1) nutrition, 2) physical activity, 3) sleep, rest and behaviours related to mental health, 4) preventive behaviours. They were analysed through the validated Positive Health Behaviours Scale for adults. The analysis also covered answers about avoiding drinking large amounts of alcohol in one go, not smoking, avoiding passive smoking, not abusing unprescribed drugs. Results. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 44%. Of 29 health behaviours concerned with nutrition, physical activity, sleep, rest, and mental health, preventive behaviours, 3 were exhibited always or almost always by over a half of the nurses. Health behaviours were more common in nurses whose BMI was normal than in nurses with BMI ≥ 25.0. Age and low physical activity levels were related to overweight and obesity in nurses. Conclusions. The study revealed a high prevalence of overweight and obesity and many deficits in health behaviours. Obesity and health behaviour deficits pose risks to the health of nurses, limit their involvement in prevention and treatment of patient obesity and impact as health educators. It is essential to engage in actions for health promotion among nurses.

Opis:
Introduction. Problems concerning occupational safety and health are commonly found in the construction industry, including falling materials, tools or people from a height, stepping on objects, and injuries caused by hand tools. An important factor in occupational safety in the construction industry is the use of scaffolds. All scaffolds used in construction, renovation, repair (including isolating, painting and decorating) and demolition, should be erected, maintained and dismantledin accordance with safety procedures. Therefore, it is crucial to deal with the safety of scaffolds and risk assessment in the construction industry; thus, the way of undertaking the assessment and the liability of assessment seems to be essential for professionals. However, it has been found that those professionals are prone to rely heavily on their own experience and knowledge in decision-making regarding risk assessment. Materials and method. The Scaffold Use Risk Assessment Model (SURAM) has been developed for assessing risk levels at various stages of the construction process in various work trades. The SURAM is the result of a research project carried out at 60 construction sites in Poland and Portugal where 504 observations have been completed including both harmful physical and chemical factors, stress level, workers’ habits, as well as a hundreds ex-post reconstruction of construction accidents scenarios. Results. It was found that the workers’ Health Behaviour Index (HBI) seems to be a more direct predictor for development of the unsafe chain of events leading to an accident than the workload, and concentration of harmful factors at the workplace. Conclusions. The developed HBI module of SURAM seems to be beneficial for predicting high-risk construction activities, and thus preventing the occurrence of accidents, based on a set of historical accident data.

Introduction. The biggest threat to life are cardiovascular diseases which are a serious problem in Poland, Europe, and worldwide. Therefore, it has become important to have proper health behaviours which significantly eliminate the occurrence and development of cardiovascular diseases. Objective. The main aim of this study is to present factors that determine health behaviours of the 50+ population with cardiovascular diseases. Materials and metod. The study was carried out among 411 individuals aged over 50 with cardiovascular diseases. The method used was a diagnostic survey. The study involved an authors’ survey questionnaire and the Inventory of Health-Related Behaviours (IHB). A detailed statistical analysis was carried out in the R programme, version 3.5.1. Results. The most common disease in the study group was coronary heart disease – 63.75%. The majority of respondents showed (via Inventory of Health-Related Behaviour [IHB]) that the level of their health behaviours was moderate – 41.12%; the highest level of health behaviours in the study group were related to health practices, while a slightly lower level was observed in the area of positive mental attitude. Statistical significance was also found between the level of intensity of health behaviours and age, gender, BMI, place of residence, education, professional activity and marital status of the respondents. Conclusions. Anti-health behaviours were predominant among the respondents; significant demographic and social factors determining health behaviour were determined, such as age and gender; a high level of health behaviours was found in the group of women with higher education and correct body mass, living in cities and married.

Opis:
Introduction: In an average Polish person aged 35–44, more than 16 teeth have or had been affected by dental caries. Of that number, almost half of the teeth have already been extracted. Oral health behaviours contribute to this civilization disease in 50%. Such poor oral health status limits the ability of the affected people to take many social and professional roles. Objectives: To evaluate current oral health behaviours and their trends among 35–44 year old Polish people during the period of recent 30 years. Material and Methods: The data were obtained from the International Collaborative Studies conducted in 1978 and 1988 at the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Łódź, Poland, under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as from 3 stages of the study on Nationwide Monitoring of Oral Health Status and Its Conditioning performed in 1998, 2002 and 2010. The researchers evaluated oral health behaviours and oral health condition of 5425 subjects. Results: Despite a noticeable improvement, poor oral health behaviours are observed in 30%–40% of the adults. In the analysed period, the number of people brushing their teeth at least twice a day increased by more than 10% and the number of people using dental floss increased by 38%. Only 60% of the adults visited a dentist at least once a year. Reduced accessibility of state-run, free-of-charge dental care has caused that over 58% of Poles paid for their dental services. Every 3rd person of working age has not visited a dentist for longer than 2.5 half years, primarily due to behavioural and financial reasons. Oral health behaviours of Polish people are among the poorest in Europe. Conclusions: Despite a noticeable improvement of the behaviours, gap between the Poles and citizens of other highly developed countries is around 20 years. A health promotion programme including oral health issues, if implemented in workplaces, might considerably reduce this gap.

Numerous studies indicate that a person's lifestyle has a positive impact on their health. However, in spite of the predominant anti-health lifestyle, the average length of life in the past few decades has increased. What is the relation between a lifestyle and life expectancy? Does the lifestyle affect human life span? Epidemiological and prospective-retrospective studies were used to evaluate a 20-year long population-based experiment, which involved in-depth studies, analyses and evaluations of three related families who resided in the same community, had the same education level, and the same period of socialization and tradition. To evaluate the collected research material, the authors used their own: Scale for evaluating nutrition habits; Criteria to assess health behaviours of subjects; Criteria for diet assessment. The studied families led a similar lifestyle, with prevalence of anti-health behaviours. Theoretically, subjects should live a similar number of years. However, the length of their lives varied. Members of families with higher number of anti-health factors lived, in fact, longer. The authors confirmed the hypothesis that the lifestyle of the examined families was an important contributor to their health, but certainly it was not the only factor to determine their life expectancy. The length of lives of the examined family members varied despite a similar lifestyle.

The aim of our study was to analyze the relationships between health behaviours and quality of life. Research was conducted on a sample of 144 women in the third trimester of pregnancy, participating in antenatal classes. The tools used for investigation of health behaviour was Health Behaviour Inventory and for the quality of life was Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQoL-Bref). The analysis of results between women with high, average and low General Index of Intensity of Health Behaviours (GIIHB) showed statistically relevant difference in quality of life only in the Environment domain ( p ≤ 0.05). Depending on GIIHB, there are different correlations between categories of health behaviours and quality of life. The present research confirmed the existence of correlations between health behaviours and perceived quality of life among pregnant women participating in antenatal classes. The observed correlations show a need for further investigation and taking into account also other individual and socio-economic factors.
