Opis:
Modern man-made engineering materials demonstrate excellent mechanical properties, but the lack of the ability of self healing, i.e. the ability to remove or neutralise microcracks without (much) intentional human interaction, which is typical for most materials as encountered in nature. Such self-healing behaviour requires the presence of mobile species, atoms or molecules, in an otherwise solid material. Upon the occurrence of damage the mobile species directionally flow towards the damage location and once arrived there restores the contact between the two crack faces and the mechanical integrity. This directional flow may occur during regular use conditions (self healing behaviour) or conditions during which the mobility is temporarily increased (stimulated self healing). In this manuscript a brief overview of the routes and mechanisms which have been used to create self healing behaviour in the principal classes of engineering materials: polymers, metals, ceramics, concrete, asphalt, fibre composites, is presented.

Opis:
Desirable sound of music has a wide range of psychological and physiological beneficial health effect among diverse population in different conditions. Research for example showed when music is selected according to its motivational qualities, the positive impact on performance (e.g., increased endurance) and psychological states (e.g., enhanced affect) are even greater, which has important implications for exercise adherence in male and female participants. On the other hand, healing sounds have always been considered in the past an important aid in medical practice, and nowadays, medicine has confirmed the efficacy of music therapy in clinical setting and in aging population. It seems healing harmony as a source of inspiration in science is an effective approach to improve quality of life in different individuals. Hence, music intervention as an easily, inexpensive, noninvasive approach to improve public health is notably recommended

Opis:
Wound healing is a dynamic process aimed at restoring homeostasis and functionality of damaged tissue. It is a highly complex, multi-stage process, the disruption of which leads to complications and health problems for the injured person. The discussed process takes place in the human system in two ways. The first of them is granulation and the second is healing per primary. Regardless of the method of wound healing, the individual phases of this process overlap each other, where before the end of the previous phase, the next begins. Demarcation of individual phases is purely practical. There are four phases of healing: the hemostasis phase, the inflammation phase, the proliferative phase – in other words the replication and synthesis phase – and the remodeling phase. The process of wound healing is a natural, long-term, and complex process that occurs in the body when injured. Incorrect healing may result in chronic wounds, necrosis or excessive scarring. Wound treatment supports this naturally occurring process in the body. In cases that require such support dressings are used, which are an essential element applicable in health care. An ideal dressing should create a barrier against external factors, maintain an appropriate environment in the wound bed (appropriate temperature, optimal humidity, slightly acidic pH, gas exchange), absorb excess of blood and exudate, keep the wound clean – cleanse it of necrotic tissue and toxins – do not adhere to the wound to avoid wound damage during dressing replacement, do not show sensitizing or irritating effects.
Gojenie się ran to proces dynamiczny, którego celem jest przywrócenie homeostazy oraz funkcjonalności uszkodzonej tkanki. To wysoce złożony, wieloetapowy proces, którego zaburzenie prowadzi do powikłań i problemów zdrowotnych osoby poszkodowanej. Omawiany proces przebiega w ustroju ludzkim dwiema drogami.

Opis:
Angiogenesis, the formation of new capillaries from pre-existing vascular network, plays an important role in physiological and pathological processes such as embryonic development, wound healing, and development of atherosclerosis. Extension of the circulatory network is also considered to be one the most important factors during cancerogenesis. Inhibition of angiogenesis may lead to inhibition of tumor growth whereas stimulation may improve wound healing. Research achievements suggest the use of plants and their extracts as potential therapeutic agents with pro- or antiangiogenic activity. Since the anticancer and antiangiogenic properties of many phytomedicines have been amply reviewed elsewhere this paper will focus on the treatment of vascular insufficiency in wound healing. Globally accepted herbal drugs are thought to be safe and effective, however, there is a need for more evidence-based confirmation in controlled and validated trials. Among the most frequently studied proangiogenic phytochemicals are ginsenosides from Panax ginseng, beta-sitosterol from Aloe vera, calycosin from Radix Astragali, and extracts from Hippophae rhamnoides L. and Angelica sinensis.

Colon anastomosis is therapeutically challenging because multiple, usually undetectable factors influence a spectrum of repair mechanisms. We hypothesized that low molecular weight heparins, routinely administered perioperatively, may differentially affect gene expression related to colon healing. Twenty pairs of untreated and enoxaparin-treated rats underwent left-side hemicolectomy with a primary end-to-end anastomosis. Normal colon and anastomotic bowel segments were resected on day 0 and on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 after surgery, respectively. Serial anastomosis transverse cross-sections were evaluated microscopically and by microarray (Rat Genome 230 2.0, Affymetrix). Differentially expressed probe sets were annotated with Gene Ontology. We also examined the influence of enoxaparin on fibroblast proliferation and viability in vitro. Among the 5476 probe sets, we identified differential expression at each healing time point, yielding 79 subcategories. Most indicated genes were involved in wound healing, including multicellular organismal development, locomotory behavior, immune response, cell adhesion, inflammatory response, cell-cell signaling, blood vessel development, and tissue remodeling. Although we found no intensity differences in histological features of healing between enoxaparin-treated and control rats, treatment did induce significant expression changes during early healing. Of these changes, 83 probe sets exhibited at least twofold changes and represented different functional annotations, including inflammatory response, regulation of transcription, regulation of apoptosis, and angiogenesis. Fibroblast culture confirmed an anti-viability effect of enoxaparin. Enoxaparin affects colon wound-related gene expression profiles, but further studies will resolve whether heparin treatment is a risk factor after intestinal surgery, at least in some patients.

Suffering and pain are part of every human life, despite the fact that modern science has made enormous efforts to eliminate them. In this paper, we deal with the mystery of suffering from a philosophical and biblical point of view. We pay special attention to the thought message of P. Strauss, a Slovak doctor and convert, according to which pain is a part of the concept of life. The second part presents the practical-pastoral aspects of care for the sick and suffering. The Christian understanding of this care is about the realization of Christ’s power and love. At the same time, it is important to maintain sensitivity to the inner attitudes of the suffering person, his value equipment and religious beliefs.

The article discusses Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony with a focus on textual manifestations of the figure of the trickster. The theme of shape-shifting and transformation that one usually associates with tricksters is linked here with the theme of (non)dualist timespace, the notion of interbeing, which in turn introduces the theme of trauma healing. The author combines two perspectives-Paula Gunn Allen’s view on timespace in her The Sacred Hoop, and Gerald Vizenor’s writings concerning trickster aesthetics-in order to show that the narrative structure of the novel can also be seen as an embodiment of the trickster: trickster-timespace, trickster-relation, and trickster-processuality; these three manifestations of the trickster are analyzed from the perspective of one more actualization of the trickster, that of a psychopomp, the “Guide of Souls” (which is manifested both at the level of plot and narration).

The article concerns the interrelation between the three soteriological categories: salvation, liberation and healing, in order to better highlight their characteristics and, above all, to show their complementarity. After discussing the initial issues related to etymology and the contemporary spiritual, religious and social context, salvation is presented in the light of the three phenomena present in today’s piety: fatalism, dolorism, and demonism that distort its proper meaning. Then salvation was shown in the perspective of human aspirations for liberation: first in historical approach, bringing out the difficulties what kind of relationship he encountered, especially in the last three centuries, and in the second part – in the theological approach, which the center is the work of Christ, realized in the Holy Spirit. It was supplemented in the last part of the article, where it was proved that liberation and healing always indicate the fullness of salvation of the human being.

ntroduction: Lower limb amputation is a surgery performed as a last resort, when all other therapeutic options have been exhausted. The duration of treatment lasts from a few to several months and depends on the extent of amputation, the patient's overall health and the course of the stump healing process. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis was performed using the database of the General and Vascular Surgery Ward of the Nikolay Pirogov Regional Specialist Hospital in Łódź. Patients who underwent lower limb amputation at the transfemoral level in 2017 were analyzed. 92 patients undergoing surgery were qualified for the study. Patients were divided into two groups: those with no healing complications and those with stump healing complications. Medical records of both groups were analyzed for risk factors for impaired healing. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Patients with impaired stump healing most often had minimal bleeding and higher ASA scores compared to patients without healing complications. No differences between the two groups were found for the remaining parameters. Patients with complications needed an average of 28 days to heal the wound and spent an average of 40 days in hospital, compared to 14 and 21 days, respectively, for patients without complications. The percentage of deaths in the group of patients with complications was also significantly higher (35%) than in the group of patients without complications (5%). Conclusions: Statistically significant factors increasing the risk of impaired stump healing include high ASA scale and minimal muscle bleeding during surgery. Patients who experienced this complication are at greater risk of prolonged hospitalization and death in the postoperative period. This study showed statistically significant risk factors for impaired stump healing following amputation and confirmed the negative impact of this complication on the length of hospitalization and risk of death.

Wound healing is a complex and time-phased process. The occurrence of numerous negative conditions as well as external factors have a significant influence on the risk of potential complications. Preparing the patient for surgery, attention should be paid to a number of factors determining the proper healing process. The aim of the study was to compare the results of the early period of surgical wound healing process with access via laparotomy using techniques, which are self-adaptive sutures and mechanical staplers used for skin closure. Material and methods. The study included 120 patients divided into three groups, according to the degree of wound continence, in accordance with the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). Exclusion criteria based on objective analysis were applied for patients with a higher risk of complications. In all cases the skin layer was closed with monofilament suture or single-patient use stapler. A ten-day observation of the wound healing process was implemented. The study was randomized. Results. In the case of patients groups identified as a “Clean Wound “ and “ Clean / Infected Wound“ no significant differences were discovered. In the group “Contaminated/Infected Wound “significantly higher percentage of wound-healing complications were reported (p < 0.05) for which monofilament sutures was used. Conclusions. The study showed, that mechanical stapler is recommended for contaminated/infected surgical wounds due to significantly lower risk of complications. In the case of wounds divided as a “Clean” and “Clean/Infected” type of suturing material has no significant effect on wound healing.

2 Kings 5:1–27 describes the healing of a foreigner, Naaman the Syrian, a high officer of the King of Damascus, by Elisha, a prophet in Israel. Naaman the Syrian suffers from a kind of skin disease called “leprosy” in the Bible. He thinks that, being rich and powerful, he is in possession of the means to get healed. He has to change his mind and his behaviour, though. He is healed when he agrees to listen to an Israelian maidservant, a slave, to the prophet Elisha, and to his own servants. When he bathes in the Jordan, he symbolically enters the Promised Land because he is healed and, at the same time, he acknowledges that Yhwh is the only Lord of the universe.
