Opis:
Dało to podstawy do różnych identyfikacji.
The article discusses the hyrax (dassie), a small Biblical creature which over the centuries has caused translators and exegetes of the Bible many problems of identification (see Lev. 11:5; Deut. 14:7; Psalm 104:18; Prov. 30:26). Early in this process, in place of the otherwise unknown Hebrew term saphan the Septuagint translators introduced a likewise not widely-known Greek equivalent, choirogrillios. This inevitably gave rise to several different identifications, with references to the hare, hedgehog, or even hog. Over time, the resultant Biblical exegesis, based on compounded inaccuracies and misunderstandings, introduced still other misinterpretations. In this way, the one Hebrew word saphan began to be perceived as two distinct animals and commented upon as a hedgehog and a hare (Augustine). A reverse phenomenon also occurred, whereby the features of two different animals used as saphan equivalents were actually combined into one composite creature (St. Jerome). Nevertheless, the present article attempts to organise all the relevant information concerning the identification of saphan. It also lists testimonies, preserved in texts of the Church Fathers, indicating that in their day the hyrax had in fact already been identified. Unfortunately, due to the creature's limited geographical range, the readers/audience of the Bible were not usually familiar with this animal. That is why accurate information about the hyrax has not been spread and used more widely. Thus, the complicated issues concerning saphan present challenges, even today, to the researchers, scholars and authors wishing to write about it.

Opis:
Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę zgromadzenia w jednym miejscu najpopularniejszych mitów, symboli i opisów postaci związanych z Księżycem. Druga część to próba naukowej weryfikacji opisanych wcześniej wierzeń i mitów.
This article is an attempt to gather in one place the most popular myths, symbols and characters associated with the Moon. It has been divided into two parts. The first part refers to legends and presents residents of the Silver Globe (Chang’e, bunny/rabbit, toad/frog, Wu Gang) and objects located there (cinnamon tree, Moon Palace). The second part is an attempt to scientifically verify these beliefs and myths. It refers to such issues as frog deity and Moon deity in the context of femininity, fertility and immortality. Next, it deals with the relationship between Moon and number “seven.” The last two sections briefly discuss the traditional Chinese holidays, connected with the Moon (Mid Autumn Festival and Double Seventh Festival) and the Chinese Lunar Exploration Project, which could be a modern proof of the Chinese people’s attachment to traditions and popular beliefs (names of space vehicles).

The article examines the ways in which two autographic peritexts tie in with the main texts of two verbatim plays they precede. The discussion addresses the question of transactions between peritext and text in view of interrelated aspects. Invoking background knowledge and the context of other verbatim plays, the inquiry concentrates mainly on The Permanent Way and Stuff Happens, staged in the years 2003-2004. While the main inquiry concerns the broader subject of constructing authorship in peritext, the further question involves the use of narrative frameworks to connect the peritext with the main text. The analysis concentrates on the ways a writer asserts, or declares, and stages his authorship, sometimes his authority, originating the process with significant enunciations in the prefatorial zone. Dealing with verbatim plays, the article invites reflection on the nexus of authorship, authority, authorization or authentication and “truth”.

This article explores the role of an international open society of mental health stakeholders in raising awareness of values and thereby reducing the vulnerability of psychiatry to abuse. There is evidence that hidden values play a key role in rendering psychiatry vulnerable to being used abusively for purposes of social or political control. Recent work in values-based practice aimed at raising awareness of values between people of different ethnic origins has shown the importance of what we call “values auto-blindness” – a lack of awareness of one’s own values as a key part of our background “life-world” – in driving differential rates of involuntary psychiatric treatment between ethnic groups. It is argued that the vulnerability of psychiatry to abuse stems from values auto-blindness operating on the judgments of rationality implicit in psychiatric diagnostic concepts. Acting like a “hall of mirrors,” an international open society of mental health stakeholders would counter the effects of values auto-blindness through enhanced mutual understanding of the values embedded in our respective life-worlds across and between the diverse perspectives of its constituents. The article concludes by noting that a model for the required open society is available in the contemporary interdisciplinary field of philosophy and psychiatry.

The present article examines the beginning of the recipe for hare meat (leporis vero si novellae […]) preserved in Chapter 13 of the dietetic treatise De observatione ciborum written in the first half of the 6th cent. by the Byzantine physician Anthimus. In the initial part of the study, the author briefly discusses key events in the doctor’s life, explaining the circumstances which brought him to the royal court of the Frankish ruler, Theuderic. Next, the author analyses Anthimus’ competence in the field of dietetics and proves that he composed his treatise in line with ancient and Byzantine materia medica. The key part of the article scrutinises the most popular methods of preparing hare meat according to ancient gastronomical literature (Ἡδυπάθεια by Archestratus of Gela, De re coquinaria) and compares them with Anthimus’ recommendations. This allows the author to reconstruct the culinary techniques that Anthimus most probably proposed be applied in the preparation of hare meat. The author concludes that Anthimus’ treatise is a clear example of the practical application of both dietetics and materia medica in culinary practices performed in the physician’s lifetime.

The purpose of this essay is to present a brief outline of the Hare Krishna movement in Brazil. Initially, it shows the extent to which the Hare Krishna movement was able to fit into the context of Brazilian society, during the nineteen-seventies when its presence was first perceived. This is followed by a description of a case concerning a specific Hare Krishna temple in the south of Brazil, Porto Alegre. Tensions were observed among the followers of the Hare Krishna doctrine in Porto Alegre, especially between a family of devotees who financially supported the Temple – functioning in their vegetarian restaurant – and the ISKCON’s leadership and its congregation. Finally, a short analysis is made on the idea of considering the Brazilian Hare Krishna movement a typical way of doing a traditional Hare Krishna movement – in Brazilian societal attributes. In other words: Is it possible to consider the Hare Krishna movement originally rooted and traditionally genuine from any country?

Due to the fact that game animals in Poland over the last hundred years or so have been subject to statistical registration of their abundance and exploitation level, the history of animal species threatened by extinction, i.e. hare, partridge, capercaillie and black grouse and red deer, roe deer, wild boar, fox and beaver in the peak of their population success has been described. Attempt was made to establish the cause of the permanent negative or positive abundance dynamics for these species throughout the country. In addition, a forecast for the future development of these species was formulated.

This paper presents the issue of new threat for the brown hare population, which in recent last decades is experiencing a significant decline in numbers in Poland and many European countries. This threat is a recombinant rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus, type 2 (RHDV2) of rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV). While the RHDV virus was present only in rabbits, both wild and breeding, and was described as absent from hares, and experimental infection attempts were unsuccessful, the strain RHDV2 was found in dead brown hares in several European countries and Australia. It is, therefore, a serious threat to the hare health status, and thus an agent further decline of the population of this species. The clinical signs and anatomopathological findings are almost the same as for in rabbits, and mortality can reach up to 90%. The new strain is dangerous because it overcomes the current resistance of animals to viruses of the Lagovirus genus, including European brown hare syndrome (EBHS) and also RHD viruses.

In this article we investigate the possible political character that lies in engaging in religious practices. For this, we seek to understand how the Hare Krishna movement constitutes its own ontology that guides the action of its followers. The study was carried out from a field experience in the ‘ISKCON Sul Yatra’ network of temples and from the selection of excerpts from texts published in the magazine 'Carta de Sankirtana', produced by members of the movement. We are inspired, when analyzing such qualitative data, in the conception of political ontologies and in the notion of 'well living', relating it to the native conception of 'nectar'. We found that the main activities of the movement, the distribution of books and food, imply collective engagement in the search for this 'nectar'. We also identified the youth characteristic as a hallmark of the Hare Krishna movement, since most of its members are young people and we define it, therefore, as a youth collective. We conclude, therefore, that the ontology of the Hare Krishna movement can be understood as politics, as it expresses itself a conception of becoming and, simultaneously, causes engagement in collective activities, based on feelings that are themselves described as adherence factors.

The role of ethicists is to provide a genuine ethical theory to help non-ethicists interpret and solve moral dilemmas, to define what is right or wrong, and, finally, to clarify moral values. Therefore, ethicists are taught to address morality with rational procedures, to set aside their moral intuitions and emotions. Sometimes, professional ethicists are prone to falling into the archangel delusion – the belief that they are beyond the influence of their own emotions. This can lead to ousting moral intuitions from the space of ethical reflection, thus making ethicists unaware of them. They may treat intuitive beliefs about morality as an expression of primal moral feelings. The main question pursued in this article, is how those feelings may influence moral theories, which should be developed by professional ethicists. Ethicists may provide an ethical theory which is merely a rationalisation and justification for their own suppressed moral emotions, rather than the effect of genuine, rational moral reasoning. To help ethicists cope with this delusion, a model of cooperation between descriptive and normative ethics is proposed. Ethicists should therefore use the research tools of descriptive ethics to determine their own intuitions, and the moral emotions in which these intuitions are grounded. --------------- Received: 09/06/2021. The article examines a kind of community of aesthetic tastes that was connecting Arab and Byzantine courtly culture. This community concerned the secular and luxurious works of art. The silver casket, called a Saracenic-Sicilian, from the Wawel Cathedral Treasury in Cracow will serve as the starting point to gain a true appreciation of the complex artistic relationship between the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world in the Middle Ages. It appears highly probable that the casket was created in the twelfth century. It was published at once after the discovery (8th March 1881) and since then, researchers argue about the place of origin of the box. Some suggest that the casket could be a product of Arabic or Persian art, while others propose either Byzantine or Sicilian workshops. What is more, even an thorough stylistic and iconographic analysis does not allow for an unambiguous resolution of the problem of provenance of the Wawel box. Lack of a resolution suggests that this piece of art was directed to a member of the cosmopolitan elite of – Arabic or Byzantine – court, which took delight in sophisticated and expensive luxury items. It is worth noting that in this case, matter of religion did not play a crucial role. For this reason, the depicted scenes and decorative details have an universal character. In order to present this specific synthesis of Arabic and Byzantine secular art, the motifs of a griffin and a hare, decorating the casket will be considered.

Weight of body, carcass and internal organs as well as paranephric fat index (KFI) as the individual condition indices of the brown hare (Lepus europaeus) in eastern Poland. The conducted examination on the individual condition of the brown hare was based on animals obtained by means of group hunting in the western part of the Lublin district in eastern Poland. The weight of body, carcass and internal organs as well as paranephric fat index (KFI) was estimated and compared for separate age and gender groups. The body weight of young hares at the level of just over 4.0 kg and adults amounting to 4.7 kg is higher than in other parts of Poland as well as in the Lublin region compared to previous years. High individual condition is also confi rmed by the KFI index, which amounted to 3.6 and was high for this time of year. Carcass mass of acquired hares, which is labeled by means of “slaughtering capacity” (percentage ratio of meat carcass weight with internal parts to live weight of the slaughtered animal), at a level slightly exceeding 60% should be considered as average for the species. Somewhat discomposing are the results regarding the lower mass of internal organs; in particular heart and lungs. Those organs condition the possibility of signifi cant locomotive effort, which consequently plays a very important role in emergency situations when the basic defence reaction of a hare is to escape quickly. Obtained results indicate that the hare population in the western part of the Lublin region is characterized by quite high indicators of individual quality, which should have a positive impact on survivability and reproductive potential of the population. Correlation coeffi cients between body weight and the weight of internal organs were in most cases, except for adult hares, high and statistically signifi cant.
