Opis:
Peganum harmala is a valuable wild plant that grows and survives under adverse conditions and produces pharmaceutical alkaloid metabolites. Using different assemblers to develop a transcriptome improves the quality of assembled transcriptome. In this study, a concrete and accurate method for detecting stress-responsive transcripts by comparing stress-related gene ontology (GO) terms and public domains was designed. An integrated transcriptome for P. harmala including 42 656 coding sequences was created by merging de novo assembled transcriptomes. Around 35 000 transcripts were annotated with more than 90% resemblance to three closely related species of Citrus, which confirmed the robustness of the assembled transcriptome; 4853 stress responsive transcripts were identified. CYP82 involved in alkaloid biosynthesis showed a higher number of transcripts in P. harmala than in other plants, indicating its diverse alkaloid biosynthesis attributes. Transcription factors (TFs) and regulatory elements with 3887 transcripts comprised 9% of the transcriptome. Among the TFs of the integrated transcriptome, cystein2/histidine2 (C2H2) and WD40 repeat families were the most abundant. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signaling map and the plant hormone signal transduction map showed the highest assigned genes to these pathways, suggesting their potential stress resistance. The P. harmala whole-transcriptome survey provides important resources and paves the way for functional and comparative genomic studies on this plant to discover stress-tolerance-related markers and response mechanisms in stress physiology, phytochemistry, ecology, biodiversity, and evolution. P. harmala can be a potential model for studying adverse environmental cues and metabolite biosynthesis and a major source for the production of various alkaloids.

Opis:
The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) status of plants colonizing an area affected by leakage of salty water (Barycz near Kraków, Poland) was studied in 2000 and 2001. The occurrence of plants typical for soils of increased salinity was observed. Among the 13 examined plant species 7 were mycorrhizal. The abundance of mycorrhizal plant populations was increased in the second year of study. Strains of 4 species of AMF, including Glomus caledonium, G. claroideum, G. geosporum and G. intraradices were isolated using trap cultures. On the basis of morphological characters the presence of G. tenue was detected in plant roots of several species from the study area. The efficiency of mycorrhizal colonization and arbuscule formation by two strains of G. geosporum isolated from a saline area and a strain of G. intraradices from unaffected sites was tested in an experiment carried out on Plantago lanceolata cultivated on substrata of different salinity levels. The increase in mycorrhizal parameters with growing salt content was observed in the case of strains originating from the salt-affected area. At the highest salt level these strains formed better developed mycorrhiza than the strain from the non-saline site, suggesting a better adaptation of the strains from the saline area. The data on vitality (alkaline phosphatase test) of intraradical AM fungi gave a clearer picture than those obtained by the conventional aniline blue staining.

Opis:
Carex secalina, a species recognized as extinct in Poland for 40 years, was re-discovered in 2000 and it’s natural populations covered by monitoring. From among nine historic localities, only for two - Jacewo and Turzany, in the vicinity of Inowrocław - the occurrence of the species was confirmed. In the course of the field studies, six new localities, not previously recorded in literature, were discovered. The sedge occupies sub-halophytic habitats in which it occurs along with halophytic species (particularly, such as Glaux maritima and Pucinellia distans) and a group of ruderal taxons. One of the newly discovered localities of C. secalina comprises an anthropogenic habitat. On the whole, the population sizes ranged from 20 to 350 individuals. The studies revealed a positive correlation between the size of a population and cattle pasturing, i.e. C. secalina forms the largest populations in the habitats remaining under the intense pressure of grazing and treading. Moreover, it was found that the high generative reproduction rate compensates the damage caused by animal grazing. The results suggest that an active protection of the sedge populations through the agricultural use of its habitats is the only effective way of securing it’s further occurrence in Poland, while including the sub-halophytic pastures with C. secalina in the agricultural and environmental program should be a priority task in the nearest future.

The size and reproduction ability of the three field populations of Carex secalina Willd. ex Wahlenb. have been assessed. In the parallel garden study selected traits from the life history of the species have been studied, such as age at first reproduction, fertility, the size of seeds, their germination ability and size of seedlings. The populations of C. secalina discovered in Poland in 2000 are characterised by small abundance and small area. All individuals from the three populations in the garden produced generative shoots in the third year of life. Statistically significant differences between the populations were found in the production of shoots with unisexual spikes and bisexual ones, the latter had not been reported in the hitherto literature on the species. The seeds started germinating after a 6-months rest. The first seedlings were observed in the first decade of May. The largest seedlings were noted in the population producing the smallest seeds. The results contribute to explaining the renewal of the populations of this species in the field.

Badania przeprowadzono na wybranych obiektach użytku zielonego zlokalizowanego w miejscowości Jarzębowo k. Wolina, w latach 2004-2007. P.F. Hunt & Summerh), z tendencją wzrostową populacji w trzecim roku badań.
The study was carried out in grasslands located in Jarzębowo near Wolin in the years 2004-2007. Floristic composition of analysed objects was differentiated and its character depended on soil and moisture conditions. Festuca rubra and Agrostis stolonifera communities were found on mud-peat soils (objects A and B) with ground water level from +2 to -10 centimetres. Communities of the type Festuca rubra, Carex disticha, Carex nigra, and Agrostis stolonifera with Carex disticha grew on mud-moorsh soils with ground water level from 0 to -60 centimetres (objects C, D, E and F, respectively). In these conditions most halophytes were found in the Agrostis stolonifera community. In the remaining communities, used as extensive pastures, the number of halophytes was lower with decreasing tendency in subsequent years. Most frequent species were Triglochin palustre L. and Triglochin maritimum L. Interesting community was the object C where Dactylioza majalis (Rchb.) P.F. Hunt & Summerh was found with increasing tendency of its population in the third year of study.

Opis:
The increasing salinity of water in reservoirs is caused by climate change. On the other hand, an increase in salinity promotes the group species, halophytes that tolerate or need NaCl for growth. The aim of this study was to identify the response of facultative halophytes’ photosynthetic apparatus efficiency (PE) to water salinity. The study covered the spiny water nymph (Najas marina L.) population in four mining subsidence reservoirs. Najas marina is a facultative halophyte which means that it can occur in both fresh and salt water. This plant has the characteristics of the species invasive, such as rapid biomass growth, and wide ecological tolerance. Water salinity, described by conductivity, in the reservoirs ranged from 646 to 3061 μS∙cm -1. PE was expressed in terms of chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, which were collected in situ using a Pocket PEA device. Water parameters using a YSI ProDSS probe were identified. Data analysis was performed using OJIP test and s the non-parametric Spearman’s rank test (p ≤ 0.05). The relationship between chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters and water parameters showed that conductivity, salinity, water clarity, and nitrate content statistically significantly affected PE (p <0.05). Generally, the higher salinity e.g. more than 3000 μS∙m -1, supports PE of facultative halophyte at the stage of optimum development in the vegetation season.

The aim of the research was to present a floristic and phytosociological assessment of „Łąki Pyzderskie” complex in terms of its natural and touristic attractiveness as well as the determination of existing and potential risks for the flora of this area. The research was conducted in the years 2012-2016. Natural values of grassland and pasture communities which influenced their touristic attractiveness were defined on the basis of a complex analysis of 226 phytosociological relevés completed with Braun-Blanquet’s method in representative areas of 50 m2. The results show that natural values of this area are determined by:geomorphology of the area i.e. small dry hills and basins; presence of halophile communities, especially with Glaux maritima, Triglochin maritima, Samolus valerandi; floral diversity visible in the richness of phytocenoses (30 communities from 5 phytosociological classes), richness in species (a total number of 233 observed species including 16 endangered and protected, inter alia: Samolus valerandi, Glaux maritima, Epipactis palustris, Orchis palustris, Dactylorhiza maculata, Triglochin maritima, Tetragonolobus maritimus), domination of native species, presence of numerous (89) melliferous plants, presence of 55 species with medicinal/herbal properties and 28 poisonous ones.

Obecnie halofity w rejonie Kujaw można spotkać m.in. w okolicach Janikowa i Mątew (dzielnica Inowrocławia) oraz w rezerwatach w Ciechocinku i Błoniu koło Łęczycy, gdzie zidentyfikowano 18 gatunków tych roślin.
In Kujawy there is the most significant concentration of unique salt-tolerant plants in Poland. Their presence is clearly associated with salt-affected soils, natural salt solutions, salt deposits, their exploitation and a soda factories, which often corresponds with this exploitation. Recently, halophytes in Kujawy are to be found in the vicinity of Janikowo and Mątwy (the latter being a district of Inowrocław), as well as within the halophyte reserves in Ciechocinek and Błonie near Łęczyca, where 18 species of such plants have been identified.

Organic farming is a holistic production management system that promotes and enhances environmental quality including biodiversity, bio-geo-chemical cycles and soil floral and faunal activities. One of the energy resources developed during recent years are the application of organic sources such as biogas slurry, blue green algae, compost, green manure farmyard manure, vermicompost and seaweed liquid fertilizer. During decomposition, these organic manures yield many organic compounds and organic acids as well as antibiotic substances as an intermediate product. Mangrove/Halophytes forest has an important ecological and socio economic value to man. In India, Tamil Nadu has a coastline of 950 km. Extensive mangrove wetlands are located in Pichavaram of Cuddalore district and Muthupet of Thanjavur district. It is reported that the nutrient values of halophytes were higher when compared to green manures (glycophytes). The objective of the present study is to highlight the efficacy of halophytic compost which are normally available in coastal areas on growth and yield parameters in pulse varieties. Various combinations of halophytic composts used, Suaeda compost + farmyard manure + phosphate solubilising bacteria treatment showed an increased in biomass and yield, number of root nodules and microbial activities when compared other halophytic compost and control. This study shows the feasibility of using halophytic composts in the coastal area to improve soil fertility and productivity.
