Opis:
The aim of the experiment was to determine suitable substrate type and optimal plant size for transfer of plantlets from in vitro to ex vitro under experimental outdoor conditions. Tests focused on the effect of substrate type (muddy and sandy) and starting size of plantlets gained through in vitro seed germination (0-3, 3.1-5,5.1-6, 6.1-10 cm) on plant growth. Three parameters (fresh weight, length, and the number of leaves) were compared to evaluate growth. Basic water parameters in experimental water tanks were regularly measured (pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, shadow intensity) and controlled to reach similar conditions to those in the natural habitat of this species. Overwintering was studied in a cellar with newly defined size categories (<6, 6.1-8, 8.1-10, 10.1-12, 12.1-15 cm). Both substrate type and starting size of plantlets significantly impacted growth. Plantlets grew better in the muddy substrate while a 100% success rate of rooting was gained with a starting size of 6.1-10 cm in both substrates. The biggest increase in fresh weight was observed with a starting size of 3.1-5 cm and 5.1-6 cm in both substrates. The greatest increase in fresh weight was observed in plants with a starting size of 3.1-5 cm in the muddy substrate (more than 95% increase). The best overwintering results were gained in the 6.1-8 cm size category.

The paper presents the results of research on the genetic variability in the growth characteristics and plasticity of Polish provenances of Norway spruce, tested on thirty plots established in Europe and Canada in the IUFRO 1972 provenance experiment. Special consideration was devoted to the plots in Poland, especially in Knyszyn. The variability in the growth and quality characteristics of the provenances, found at experiment level, is high (within 6.099 standard deviation units). At provenance level, it ranges between 4.674 for Kartuzy and 2.192 for Rycerka Zwardoń. This indicates that the performance of the provenances depends much on environmental conditions. Although no provenance can be considered adaptable to any conditions thatmay occur in the cultivation of spruce, the Istebna Bukowiec and Zwierzyniec Lubelski provenances, having a very high breeding value and high plasticity, may be recommended for a wider use in reforestation.

A pot experiment was conducted in the green house to determine the effect of municipal solid waste on the growth of maize (zea mays). Growth parameters of percentage emergence, plant height, leaf area and number of levers per plant were collect and subjected into statistical analysis, using ANOVA and fisher’s L.S.D. at 5 % probability level. Plant growth parameters decreased with increase in cropping cycle. Similarly, maize grown on dumpsite soils did better than the control soil samples. It show increase in plant height, leaf area and number of leaves per plant at a range of 16.82 cm to 12.87 cm, 5 to 4 and 64.69 cm to 59.88 cm for the dumpsite and control samples respectively. Soil PH, organic matter (OM), total Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Sodium (Na) and Effective Cat-ion Exchange Capacity (ECEC) decreased with increase in cropping cycle respectively. The Dumpsite soil sample recorded higher mean values than the control (P < 0.05). There is every indication that municipal solid waste is beneficial to plant if only proper and careful sorting and separation of hazardous waste is done.

Agricultural wastes management is a step toward sustainable agriculture. Peanut shelles as remained wastes of cultivating peanut has considerable volume which its compost can be used as available sources of ornamental plants medium. A factorial experiment based on randomized completely blocks design was conducted to investigate the impact of peanut shelles compost as the growth medium of Camellia in different concentrations of potassium. Fifteen treatments, every treatment at three replicates and 45 plots were used for experiment. The rooted cuttings of Camellia were planted and periodic watering with Hoagland solution was performed two times per week. After five months, the plants growth indices and the concentration and uptake nutrients were measured. Results showed that peanut shelles compost increased growth indices than in the control. In the most growth indices, the plant indicated a better response to 40% (w/w) compost and finally 60%. The results are indicator of providing the needed potassium for plant by peanut shelles compost than in the control.
W odniesieniu do większości wskaźników wzrostu, rośliny wykazywały lepszą reakcję w przypadku 40% i ostatecznie 60% dodatku kompostu (% wag.). Wyniki wskazują na skuteczniejsze dostarczanie potasu potrzebnego do wzrostu roślin w przypadku kompostu z łusek orzechów ziemnych w porównaniu z kontrolą.

The efficiency of a system based on porous tubes in maintaining soil water potential during water extraction by plants in growth chamber experiment was evaluated. The effect of porous tubes area, soil type and density on water flow through porous tubes as induced by various water potentials was evaluated. The rate of change of soil water potential in response to pressure change depends strongly on the area of ceramic tubes per soil volume. If rapid changes or precise control of soil water potential are needed, the area of ceramic tubes per soil volume should be large. Experiments in which porous tubes are used for maintaining water potential should reach a compromise between plant water demands and permissible disturbance caused by the presence of porous tubes in the soil environment.

Based on a three-year field experiment under controlled condition in Ji’nan, China, the effects of peanut growth on the variation in the abundance and community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) before and after peanut growth were investigated through quantitative PCR and cluster analysis of terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Our results show that the community composition of AOA and AOB was greatly affected by the peanut growth leading to the decreased abundance of AOA and increased abundance of AOB. Furthermore, AOA and AOB community structures varied before and after peanut growth. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all AOA and AOB community sequences were clustered into the uncultured group. Altogether, the results suggested that the abundance of AOA and AOB in soil and their community compositions can be greatly affected by the peanut growth.

A pot culture was carried out with Oryza sativa L. vari-Co-39, to investigate the effects of supplementary calcium chloride on plants grown at NaCl (50mM) concentration. Treatments were: (1) Control: nutrient solution alone (C); (2) nutrient solution plus 50mM sodium chloride (NaCl); (3) nutrient solution plus 10mM calcium chloride (CaCl2); (4) nutrient solution plus 15mM calcium chloride (CaCl2); (5) nutrient solution and 50 mM NaCl plus supplementary 10 mM CaCl2 (NaCl + CaCl2); and (6) 50 mM NaCl plus additional mixture of 15 mM CaCl2 in nutrient solution (NaCl + CaCl2). The plants grown under salt stress produced low dry weight and relative water content than those grown in standard nutrient solution and in CaCl2 alone. Supplemental calcium chloride added to nutrient solution containing salt significantly improved growth and relative water content. Membrane permeability increased with high NaCl application and these increases in root membrane permeability were decreased with supplementary Ca. The concentration of chloride (Cl) increases highly for all treatments. Sodium (Na) concentration in plant tissues increased in both shoots and roots at high NaCl treatment. Application of supplementary Ca lowered Na concentration. Concentrations of Ca. K and N were at deficient ranges in the plants grown at high NaCl levels and these deficiencies were corrected by supplementary Ca. The ameliorating effect of Ca on growth and physiological variables could reduce the negative effect of salinity of Oryza sativa L., plants.

Provenance trials with forest trees provide valuable information about growth and adaptability of populations often transferred over large geographical and climatic distances. In this study we evaluated growth and survival of 19 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) populations representing most of the natural range of the species in Europe, growing in a 30-year-old provenance trial in the northeastern Poland. We used cluster analysis to investigate differentiation among those populations in growth and survival. We also used published data on needle morphology and allozyme and DNA marker variation for those same populations to compare groupings of populations based on growth and needle traits and markers. We found significant variation among tested populations in all investigated traits – the largest variation was found for stand volume which integrates information on growth and survival. Variation in growth traits was related to the latitude of population origin with populations from the latitudinal band between 49° N and 54° N showing the best performance. Populations originating from both north and south off of that region showed lower productivity, which for southern provenances resulted from their particularly low survival, reflecting the lack of adaptation to the environment of the research site. Grouping of populations based on growth traits revealed three clusters corresponding to the three latitudinal regions – northern, central and southern. Needle morphological traits were not appropriate as markers of productivity. Clustering of populations based on needle morphology, and especially based on biochemical and molecular markers, did not correspond to the grouping based on growth traits.

Two provenance experiments with Norway spruce in Slovakia were used to reveal trends in the behaviour of provenances after their transfer. Regressions between the average height and survival of provenances and the differences between the geographic and selected climatic characteristics of the place of origin and provenance plots were significant for most of the characteristics tested. Data from the experiment with Polish and Slovak provenances from 1972 indicated that transfer into warmer regions with a longer vegetation period results in improved height growth and survival, with the exception of survival at initial stages. The experiment from 1964 with a broader altitudinal range of provenance plots, but with unadjusted latest measurements at individual plots available, revealed the best height growth of Slovak Norway spruce provenances after their transfer to sites with the mean annual temperature approximately 1°C higher and with the vegetation period 12 days longer than at places of origin. Transfer into lower altitudes, a warmer climate and a longer vegetation period improved survival. In both experiments, transfer to areas with increased rainfall had a negative effect on growth, which is probably associated with the fact that provenances are not able to exploit additional precipitation for the growth in areas with a colder climate and a shorter vegetation period.

Murraya koenigii L. (family: Rutaceae), commonly referred to as curry leaf, is a highly valued plant due to its aroma and medicinal features. Two dominant AM species Glomus mosseae and Acaulospora laevis were isolated from the rhizospheric soil of M. koenigii. A pot experiment was performed to verify the interactive potential of G. mosseae and A. laevis alone or in combination with Pseudomonas fluorescens on M. koenigii. Various morphological and biochemical parameters were measured after 120 days. Overall results suggest that all co-inoculation treatments showed beneficial effects on all the growth, physiological and oil content. The overall results demonstrate that the co-inoculation of bioinoculants, like P. fluorescens with AM fungi, promotes higher AM colonization and spore number enhancing the nutrient acquisition, especially phosphorus (P), improving the rhizospheric condition of soil.

Opis:
A field experiment in growing sweet basil was carried out in the period 2008-2010 in Fajsławice (Lublin region), on podzolic soil. The study evaluated the biometric traits of the plants, yield, the qualitative parameters of herbal raw material and weed infestation of the crop in dependence on growth simulators (Asahi SL, Bio-algeen, Titanit) and the forecrop (winter wheat or spring barley + white mustard cover crop). Plots without foliar application of the growth stimulators were the control treatment. Tillage, mineral NPK fertilization as well as mechanical and chemical weed control were typical for this plant species and consistent with the recommendations for herbal plant protection. A hypothesis was made that the application of growth stimulators would have a positive effect on basil productivity, raw material quality and weed infestation of the basil crop. It was also assumed that the phytosanitary and fertilizing effects of the cover crop would result in higher and qualitatively better yield compared to the cereal forecrop alone (winter wheat). The best quantitative parameters of sweet basil raw material and the highest reduction in air-dry weight of weeds in the crop were observed after the application of the growth stimulators. The forecrop – spring barley + a white mustard cover crop that is ploughed in – also had a beneficial effect on yield and weed infestation of the plant in question. The traditional crop protection method used in the basil crop, without the application of the growth stimulators, resulted in a lower plant height and a smaller number of shoots per plant. This caused higher weed infestation of the crop and a decrease in yield. The positive side of the non-application of growth stimulators was a better chemical composition of basil raw material. Asahi SL and Tytanit yielded the best growth and productivity of the basil plants.

One of the main tasks for the forest managers is to form the highly productive stands, and it is mainly performed by applying intermediate cuttings during the stand development. As the impact of thinning on the premature Scots pine, commercially most important species in Lithuania, has not been sufficiently investigated yet, our objective was to evaluate the impact of such treatments on the growth and yield of the pine stands by using data from the long term experimental plots. The described thinning experiment was established in 1983 in Kazlu˛ Ru−da (54.760395°N, 23.517736°E), in the 30−years−old Scots pine forest, growing in oligotrophic site conditions. Four square plots with the size of 0.25 ha each were set. The first one (5) was left as a control variant with no thinning, while the others were subjected to the treatments of different intensity. In variant 5A (slightly thinned) 15% of the basal area compared to the control plot was removed. Accordingly, in variant 5B (moderate thinning) 25% and in variant 5C (heavy thinning) 40% of basal area was subtracted. No additional thinning was implemented further during the experiment. Plots were re−measured at least 4 times with the last measurement in 2016, when the stand was 63 years old. The main result of this study was that after the 33 years no evident effect of various intensity of silvicultural treatments can be seen as the growth and yield of the un−thinned forest stand was the highest compared to the thinned ones. Growth and yield in the most intensely thinned stand reached 86 and 85% compared to the control variant, respectively. The best productive results were found for moderate thinning (92 and 89% of growth and yield of the un−thinned stand), while the worst – in the slightly thinned 5A variant (77 and 83% of values for the control stand). Further on, the number of trees and competition level in all plots were very different when the experiment was established. Yet after 33 years, these differences were remarkably reduced. Accordingly, the diameter distributions, being very different at the beginning of the experiment, eventually became very similar in all experimental plots. Finally, the results showed that in un− −thinned forest stand, natural mortality (self−thinning) of trees adjusted its density just in time. Thus this stand managed to keep its growing energy in later periods, avoiding degradation or destruction predicted by some theories.

Opis:
Effect of dried pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima D.) supplementation on growth performance, serum biochemistry and parameters antioxidant status of rats. The aim of the studies was to determine the effect of dried pumpkin, used in the diets for rats on parameters of growth, nutrient metabolism and antioxidant status of the animals. The experiment was carried out for 7 weeks with 30 growing male Wistar rats. The animals were classified into three groups, 10 individuals in each group, with the initial body weight of 108 g. The control group (G-0) was fed the semi-synthetic mixture without dried pumpkin additive whereas the experimental groups received the mixture with 5-% (G-5) and 10-% (G-10) additive of the dried pumpkin, Ambar variety. The dry substance was obtained from disintegrated fruits, deprived of seed nests, dried at temperature of 60°C. During the experiment weight gains and feed intake were controlled. After termination of the experiment, the rats were killed by anaesthesia; the blood samples were collected and biochemical indices and indicators of antioxidant status were determined. The dietary treatments had no effects on animal growth and feed utilization. In the animals receiving dried pumpkin in their diets (G-5, G-10) significantly lower level of glucose concentration in serum was found. In group G-0, the higher concentration of triacylglycerolsin relation to group G-10 was recorded. Also, the concentration of total cholesterol in group G-0 was higher in comparison to groups G-5 and G-10. In group G-0, VLDL concentration was also higher in relation to group G-10. In group G-10 vs. groups G-5 and G-0, the higher activity of glutathione peroxidise (GPx) was recorded. Total antioxidant status (TAS) was higher in group G-10 in comparison to groups G-0 and G-5. The effect of the administered diet on indicators of the degree of lipid oxidation was also found. In group G-10 vs. group G-0, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) concentration was lower.
Grupa kontrolna (G-0) żywiona była mieszanką półsyntetyczną bez dodatku suszu z dyni, natomiast grupy doświadczalne otrzymywały mieszankę z 5% (G-5) i 10% (G-10) udziałem suszu z dyni ambar. Susz uzyskano z rozdrobnionych owoców, pozbawionych gniazd nasiennych, suszonych w temperaturze 60°C. U szczurów otrzymujących w dietach susz z dyni stwierdzono niższe stężenie glukozy w surowicy w porównaniu do zwierząt z grupy kontrolnej (G-0). W grupie G-0 występowało wyższe stężenie trójglicerydów w stosunku do grupy G-10. W G-10 w porównaniu do G-0 stwierdzono niższe stężenie TBARS.
