Introduction/background: The article discusses the subject of group learning among prison service officers based on the example of group supervision. Aim of the paper: Based on the studies of the subject literature and the authors’ own research, an attempt was made to identify the benefits and barriers which accompany the implementation of group supervision within the framework of the prison system. Materials and methods: The research was conducted in 2020, and the research method was individual interview with a standardized list of searched for information (semi-structured). The selection of study participants was carried out through purposive sampling; the respondents were prison service officers acting as psychologists with at least 15 years’ experience in active service, defined as "experts". Results and conclusions: The respondents agree concordantly that group supervision is a valuable method of group learning, emphasizing benefits such as: expanding awareness, understanding the dynamics of relationships with inmates, coping with difficult emotions, and obtaining valuable feedback. Among the barriers preventing officers from using this form on a permanent basis, the respondents mentioned: budgetary constraints in terms of financing, lack of regularity and cyclicality of meetings, and low awareness among superiors as to the beneficial aspects of supervision.

In the modern world, foreign languages are a tool being used in work by many young persons, and as a consequence – students are interested in the practical knowledge of a foreign language. There are not many useful tools to learn Russian on the market, and those available do not satisfy the needs, so we use different methods in the process of teaching – exercises with the elements of competition, games and its mechanics (e.g. our original project of a language game, city language game). It allows us to watch to which extent students are aware of group processes they participate in, and how those processes influence their motivation to learn a foreign language. The results of our research show that the methods we use have the impact on the social competencies of students and the effect they have on each other is linked directly with their motivation to improve their language skills. It is crucial to recognise the impact of group processes on a person, because when these processes are efficiently managed they become a useful tool in planning the strategy of teaching in order to improve students’ efficiency in obtaining their goals. However, the group influence on a single person and the facilitation are not new issues, they are still interesting and requiring new research.

It is known that the language classroom is the place where teachers and learners come together for interaction and students can learn English in natural settings. Group work is a teaching strategy at all levels of education and researchers have observed that group based assignments and discussions are a common feature of tertiary education. The effective use of group work in the language class can provide a valuable learning experience to students and give them the opportunity to practically experience the language exposure of the ideas presented and strengthen their learning. In this regard, this paper attempts to identify the efficiency of individual and group work teaching strategy of the students to excel at foreign language learning. Then, the paper aims to define the effect of individual and group work of students’ value participation in academic communication. Finally, the paper tries to determine the most effective methods for working in a group and individually with the help of the data obtained with the help of a purpose-designed questionnaire to assess their preference for different teaching methods.

In the study carried out by using qualitative methods, a research instrument for measuring the applicability of principles recommended for the elderly learning in an age-heterogeneous group was created based on geragogy reference sources. The action research of one group showed that most of the principles of geragogy were applied in the study process, although the respective training course was not specifically designed for the elderly. In this combined-age learning group, elderly learners experienced some problems, and recommendations are proposed to solve them.
W badaniu przeprowadzonym przy użyciu badań jakościowych stworzono narzędzie badawcze do pomiaru zastosowania zasad rekomendowanych dla uczących się osób starszych w grupie zróżnicowanej wiekowo. Narzędzie to powstało w oparciu o źródła odniesienia do geragogiki. Badania w działaniu (action research) przeprowadzone na jednej grupie wykazały, że większość z zasad geragogiki miała swoje zastosowanie w procesie uczenia, mimo że szkolenie nie było skierowane wyłącznie do osób starszych. W tej uczącej się, zróżnicowanej wiekowo grupie, starsze osoby doświadczyły pewnych trudności podczas uczenia się. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu zaproponować rozwiązania dla owych problemów.

In this paper, I will report qualitative research findings on how undergraduate students at a small-sized university in Thailand perceive Facebook group usage in a writing class. The findings suggest that the Facebook group can be used as blended learning (a hybrid instructional model) and learning management system (posting announcements and comments relevant to the class and their writing assignments) for the students to learn with, not to learn from, as facilitated by the instructor. The reasons were that they positively viewed the Facebook group usage as a practical, trendy and beneficial teaching tool, which helped to motivate them to learn English virtually and enhance their positive attitudes towards learning the language. When they encounter virtual communication apprehension, the Facebook group usage appeared to be a booster neutralizing their positive attitudes towards virtual interactions. Such positive results may derive from the fact that the students grew up as digital natives and the Millennial Generation using Facebook, the prominent social network site, as parts of their daily life. Teachers of English, who may be seen as digital immigrants or digital immigrant accent, may need to consider use of learning technologies in their writing class.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) represents a major development and change in educational practice that continues to have a large impact across subjects and disciplines worldwide. PBL is a successful teaching and learning strategy used to engage students in deep rather than surface learning and where the learning is student focused rather than teacher focused (Biggs,1999). The paper presents the comparison of PBL with traditional learning in the teaching of geography in high school. Comparative analysis of the results of the pedagogical experiment, which included three high schools, 14 classes with 339 students, is carried out. In the statistical analysis of data t-test was used to check the hypothesis on the differences of the arithmetic means. The results of the final test showed that there was a significant difference in the arithmetic means between the students who had taken a PBL course and the students who had taken a traditional course. It can be concluded that PBL has a positive impact on improving student achievement in the learning of geography in elementary and secondary schools.

Aim. Cooperative learning (CL) is a widely recognised pedagogical practice which involves students working together to achieve common goals that they could not complete individually. Johnson and Johnson are among the main theorists behind the movement. In 1994 they announced five elements essential for the successful incorporation of CL in the classroom: (a) positive interdependence; (b) face-to-face promotive interaction; (c) individual and group accountability; (d) interpersonal and small group social skills; (e) group processing. In this study we seek to understand how primary school teachers implement cooperative learning and include the above-mentioned aspects in their classes. Methods. The qualitative case study was conducted at a primary school in Vilnius, Lithuania. Two lessons were recorded, transcribed, and analysed to gather evidence concerning variables that mediate cooperative learning. The teachers planned the lessons together, using the principles that are outlined in a professional development method called Japanese lesson study. The study involved two teachers and 40 (20+20 pupils in two classes) fourth graders. Also, interviews were conducted with the teachers and three pupils from each class. Results and conclusion. The forms of cooperative learning observed in the classrooms were markedly different, even though the lesson plans were almost identical. In Lesson 1 the teacher paid more attention to interdependence, interaction, and reflection. Consequently, students mentioned cooperation, assistance, and specifics of group workmore frequently. In Lesson 2, there was more traditional group work than CL schemes, and less interdependence, interaction, and reflection. The five essential elements were unequally represented in the lessons, highlighting the varied understanding of CL. ‘In situ’ research revealed which elements of cooperative learning need to be stressed inteacher pre-service and in-service settings. The study also deepened the understanding of which aspects are more difficult to implement, or which have made significant inroads into classroom practice. Originality. Situational research involving both CL and Japanese Lesson Study techniques provide valuable insights into the professional development of teachers who aim to improve their classroom practice.

W artykule autorzy zwracają uwagę na rolę i znaczenie treningu psychologicznego, który może być bardzo pomocny w prowadzeniu zajęć dydaktycznych dla studentów psychologii. W okresie istotnych zmian społeczno-kulturowych zachodzących we współczesnym świecie obserwuje się zwiększenie tempa życia, presję czasową oraz wzmożoną rywalizację. W konsekwencji prowadzi to do częstych sytuacji stresowych, a ponadto do pojawiania się nowych zjawisk psychopatologicznych (np. wzrost występowania zaburzeń osobowości, depresji czy uzależnień). Trening psychologiczny jest aktywną formą zajęć, w których ważną rolę odgrywa grupa i proces dynamiki grupowej będący bardzo ważnym zjawiskiem wpływającym na możliwość lepszego poznania zasad funkcjonowania grupy, lepszego poznania siebie oraz innych osób. Jego obserwacja umożliwia samopoznanie, integrację grupową, sprzyja budowaniu postaw tolerancji, akceptacji innych i uczeniu się zachowań prozdrowotnych. W trakcie zajęć treningowych uczestnik uczy się także empatii, syntonii, poznaje swoje mocne i słabe strony. Uczy się kontroli nad swoimi reakcjami emocjonalnymi oraz zachowaniem. Odpowiednie ćwiczenia mogą pomóc w opanowaniu stresu. Grupa jest także źródłem wielu ważnych informacji zwrotnych. Trening może być zatem formą edukacji sprzyjającej poznaniu zjawisk występujących w pracy przyszłego psychologa.
In the article, the authors draw attention to the role and importance of psychological training, which can be very helpful in teaching classes for psychology students. During the period of significant socio-cultural changes taking place in the modern world, an increase in the pace of life, time pressure and increased competition are observed. As a consequence, this leads to frequent stressful situations and, moreover, to the appearance of new psychopathological phenomena (e.g. increase in the appearance of personality disorders, depression or addiction). Psychological training is an active form of classes in which an important role is played by the group and the group dynamics process, which is a very important phenomenon affecting the possibility of getting to know the principles of the group’s functioning, getting to know oneself and other people. Its observation enables self-knowledge, group integration, helps to build tolerance attitudes, acceptance of others and learning pro-health behavior. During training classes, the participants also learn empathy, syntony, their strengths and weaknesses. They learn to control their emotional reactions and behavior. Appropriate exercises can help to manage stress. The group is also a source of many important feedback. Training can therefore be a form of education conducive to learning about the phenomena occurring in the work of the future psychologist.

Pupils’ spontaneous questions and statements represent interesting research material from the point of view of the effects they have on the actions taken by the teacher (explanations, assessment, control, etc.) as well as on the kind of knowledge pupils acquire (about the world and about themselves) as a consequence of the teacher’s actions. The research into the functioning of children in the course of educational activities described in this article is merely an example of possible attacks on the problems of subjectivity. The research results enrich the present knowledge of the teacher’s actions (taken in connection with students’ knowledge or lack of it). They also point to the possibility of further research into students’ spontaneous speech at various levels of education.

In recent years, a number of studies have been conducted with regard to communication strategy training and performance on communicative tasks (Lam, 2009; Nakatani, 2010; Naughton, 2006). This study aims to add to the literature by examining how two strategies, clarifying/confirming and extending a conversation, and two methods of teaching the strategies, affected the interactional sequences and overall group discussion performance of EFL students at a university in Japan. Pre and posttreatment small-group discussions were recorded for assessment, and a stimulated recall interview was administered to determine the participants’ perceptions of their learning and language use. Posttest results reveal that the experimental groups that were taught predetermined phrases aimed at clarifying/confirming and extending a conversation employed such phrases more frequently than the control group. However, this employment of phrases did not lead to higher gains in group discussion skills as the control group enjoyed the largest gains from pre to posttest. The researchers consider the findings in light of previous research, and conclude with recommendations for future research on the topic with special regard to research design.

This study describes how students of pedagogy perceive group collaboration. The first part of this study sets forth a theological introduction to the basic concept of collaboration and its significance with regard to contemporary culture and to the profession for which the youth who participated in this study are preparing. The second part provides an analysis of qualitative data obtained during this study. According to our findings, the majority of the candidate-participants preparing to enter the field of pedagogy perceive group collaboration as something advantageous that fosters their development. Group collaboration can be a way to enrich the humanistic values of education, including respect for and trust of another person, which are essential to build a community of learners. It is difficult to introduce these values into the education system, however, because institutions are often pressured to increase their quantitative rankings, improve their scores, and compete with each other.
Celem tekstu jest opis sposobu postrzegania współpracy w grupie przez studentów pedagogiki. Struktura tekstu obejmuje dwie części. Pierwsza zawiera teoretyczne wprowadzenie w problematykę współpracy w podstawowym zakresie oraz uzasadnienie jej ważności w odniesieniu do współczesnego kontekstu kulturowego, a także specyfiki zawodu, do którego badana młodzież przygotowuje się. Druga część obejmuje prezentację jakościowej analizy danych. Wynika z niej, że wśród badanych kandydatów do zawodu pedagoga, dominujące jest postrzeganie współpracy w grupie, jako formy dającej wiele korzyści, sprzyjającej rozwojowi uczestników. Ta forma może być drogą do uobecniania w procesie edukacji wartości humanistycznych: szacunku i zaufania do drugiego człowieka, które są podstawą budowania uczących się wspólnot, jednak ich powstawanie jest bardzo utrudnione w systemie edukacji poddanej presji ilościowych rankingów, punktacji i rywalizacji.

Przedmiotem tekstu jest omówienie dwóch kierunków oddziaływań, które można zaliczyć do profilaktyki pozytywnej dręczenia rówieśniczego (bullyingu). Punktem wyjścia było wyjaśnienie istoty tego zjawiska, które jest rozumiane jako kompleks czynności agresywnych stosowanych systematycznie przez jednego ucznia lub grupę uczniów wobec innego ucznia, któremu z jakichś powodów trudno się bronić. Centralnymi właściwościami dręczenia są powtarzające się w różnej formie działania krzywdzące drugą osobę oraz nierównowaga siły między dwiema stronami tej relacji. Następnie wskazano dwie perspektywy analityczne dręczenia szkolnego, tj. perspektywę personologiczną i procesualną, oraz zasygnalizowano ich ważniejsze założenie i ustalenia. Zwrócono przy tym uwagę na potrzebę pozytywnej profilaktyki przemocy rówieśniczej i kompleksowego podejścia do tego zagadnienia. W efekcie tych rozważań wskazano i omówiono swoiste zabiegi odpowiadające ustaleniom wynikającym z perspektyw dręczenia rówieśniczego. Jako pierwszy kierunek, będący odpowiedzią na ujęcie personologiczne dręczenia rówieśniczego, przedstawiono społeczno-emocjonalne uczenie się stanowiące podstawę pozytywnego rozwoju dzieci i młodzieży. Biorąc zaś pod uwagę procesualną perspektywę zjawiska, skonstatowano, że oddziaływania profilaktyczne należy przemyśleć w sposób, który uwzględnia takie projektowanie procesów społecznych, aby były źródłem pozytywnych doświadczeń dla członków grupy rówieśniczej, co nazwano architekturą pozytywnych doświadczeń w grupie.
The subject of the text is a discussion of two strategies that can be included in the peer bullying positive prevention. The starting point was to clarify the essence of bullying, which is understood as a complex of aggressive behaviors applied systematically by one pupil (pupil) towards another who for some reason has hard time defending himself or herself. The central features of bullying are the repetitive behavior of the perpetrator and the imbalance between the two sides of this relation. Next, two analytical perspectives on school bullying were identified, i.e. person- and process- oriented perspective, and their main assumptions and findings were signaled. Attention was paid to the need for peer bullying positive prevention and a comprehensive approach to this issue. As a result of these considerations, specific strategies corresponding to the discussed perspectives have been identified and analyzed. The socio-emotional learning as a basis for the positive development of children and adolescents has been presented as a first direction and as an implication of person-centered orientation. Taking into consideration the processual perspective of the phenomenon it has been stated that preventive influences should be rethought in a way that takes into account the design of social processes so that they are a source of positive experiences for the members of the group, which is called the architecture of positive experiences in the group.

Podtrzymywanie i rozwijanie znajomości języka polskiego jako odziedziczonego, także przybliżanie dziedzictwa kulturowego kraju pochodzenia, nie jest łatwym zadaniem. Autorka wychodzi od określenia pojęcia języka odziedziczonego. Kolejno przedstawia wybrane problemy, z jakimi spotykają się uczący języka polskiego jako języka pochodzenia w szkołach poza granicami kraju. Zwraca uwagę na zróżnicowanie poziomu znajomości języka w grupach uczniów i wskazuje na jego uwarunkowania. Wskazuje też nowe konteksty: świat technologii – bliski uczniom oraz pandemię, która utrudniła naukę, ale także przyspieszyła unowocześnianie narzędzi dydaktycznych oraz podniosła kompetencje nauczycieli w posługiwaniu się nimi. Autorka dokonuje także krytycznej analizy podstawy programowej oraz oferty materiałów dydaktycznych dla szkół polonijnych – nie zawsze odpowiadających wymogom procesu dydaktycznego i nowoczesnym realiom.
Maintaining and developing the knowledge of Polish as an inherited language, and bringing the cultural heritage of the country of origin closer, is not an easy task. The author starts with a definition of the concept of an inherited language. Next, selected problems faced by teachers of Polish as the language of origin in schools abroad are presented. The author points to the differentiation of the level of language proficiency in groups of students and indicates its determinants. She also shows new contexts: the world of technology, which is close to the students, and the pandemic that made learning difficult but also accelerated the modernisation of teaching tools and increased the competence of teachers in using them. The author also makes a critical analysis of the core curriculum and the offer of didactic materials for Polish diaspora schools, which do not always meet the requirements of the didactic process or modern realities.
