As couples tend to be referred to as “being together,” long-distance partners, who spend most of their time apart and in diff erent spaces, might face a challenge delineating and validating their relationship. Through in-depth interviews with 20 couples in a long-distance relationship, this study explores how long-distance partners linguistically and symbolically mark the boundaries of their relationship, and also transcend any real or perceived gaps between distance and closeness in the process. While they rarely shared a physical space, my participants created joint socio-mental spaces, which enhanced their sense of belonging and helped to expand defi nitions of intimacy and space.

Opis:
Many empirical studies have focused on the quantitative changes in the social networks of divorced and separated people. In this qualitative study, we use interviews with dyads to construct a two-sided view of the support network after separation. The aim of the study is to gain insight into the needs for support after a relational breakup. Including a network member in the analysis enables a more detailed view on the interaction at hand in the bond between these women and their supportive network members. The results show that personal coping resources are left untouched. Giving advice on ones daily activities is counter-productive. This is better understood by non family members compared to the women’s parents (especially the mother). With respect to the reciprocity in these relationships, network members do not expect a return in the period after the separation.

Opis:
The paper analyzes the role-making of an orchestral conductor. It is framed by the symbolic interactionist perspective and focuses on Ralph Turner’s role-making theory and the works of Alfred Schütz and Howard S. Becker and associates. The research project is based on grounded theory methodology. The applied techniques include semi-structured interviews, video-elicited interviews, observations of teaching conducting and opera rehearsals, video analysis, and secondary data analysis. The results reveal how the process of role-making is shaped during secondary socialization and indicate the social features of the role, such as high social prestige, awareness of the body, an exclusive social group, and teamwork. The role-making process is based on permanent interactions and negotiations with social actors: the composer and the musical score, the orchestra, soloists, ballet, and the audience. Additionally, it is influenced by cultural factors, such as the conductor’s gender, age, nationality and international experience, competencies, as well as the type of professional contract. At the same time, conductors need to actively maintain the image of determined and resolute individualists, as expected by the social actors they interact with.

The article addresses the issue of interactive practices of the social workers with people who are “mentally disturbed”. In the study, the author applied the grounded theory (Glaser, Strauss, 2009). Due to the nature of the selected method, it was essential that the daily routine of the social workers become also the daily routine of the author. The research was conducted at the Social Welfare Center and the author spent 6 months in the social work institution and additionally, the first 6 months at the internship in the same location. In the research, the following material sourcing techniques have been used: observation, document analysis and interviews (conversations) with the social workers.

A constructivist IR approach is blended with a Grounded Theory-based analysis of in-depth in interviews in an interpretive discussion of the US’s 2003 invasion of Iraq, its later soft power approach in country, and the responses of young Kurdish participants in an American program in that sphere. The invasion of Iraq is argued to have been the outcome of ideational and cultural as well as realist factors within American society. Analysis of interviews with Kurdish students reveals a) strengths and weaknesses of the American soft power approach, and b) their thoughts on their homeland, its culture, and its future.

Opis:
In the Polish literature on the subject, prostitution is analyzed from various theoretical perspectives, but, first of all, from the perspective of social pathology. This approach makes the researchers focus mainly on the social maladjustment of women providing sex services and the reasons for their violation of the normative order. In my ethnographic research conducted in escort agencies in Poland, I was willing to go beyond this narrow outlook. I have adapted an interactionist perspective to analyze the escort agencies as organizations where intense interactions between employees, as well as employees and clients, take place, the sex work process is organized, and the meanings of prostitution are negotiated. I conducted the analysis according to the procedures of the grounded theory methodology. It allowed me to see and describe such processes as: (re)defining the situation of providing sex services from vice to work, sex work as a collective action, performing sex work, secondary socialization for sex work. The adaption of an interactionist perspective opens some new directions for analysis, which could help to understand the phenomenon of women getting involved in and continuing to provide sex services for a long time.

Opis:
This study incorporates Honneth’s social recognition into awareness context theory by reconsidering a case study of the dialogue between Zainichi Korean and Japanese people in Japan. It revitalizes the theoretical significance of Strauss’ symbolic interactionism in terms of its focus on power dynamics and conflicts between the majority and minorities that differ in the cultural or ethnic background in modern global society. Incorporating critical theory into symbolic interactionism is a method of enhancing its contemporary significance. However, the discrepancy between them remains unresolved. There are some previous studies on Zainichi Koreans’ dialogue and the public sphere. Still, this case uniquely fits the aim of this study. As a result, it proposes both a substantive theory as a social justice inquiry in Japanese society and a modified formal theory of awareness context by adopting the theoretical perspective coined in this study and using abductive reasoning in the reconsideration. The substantive theory proposes a joint action characterized by unending mutual recognition and pragmatist dissent as a pragmatist public sphere between different ethnic persons in Japan. It is a method of grassroots communication that realizes liberal democracy as the form of modern society in Japan, liberating people from the Japanese communitarian mindset of Wa. The formal theory proposes new awareness contexts focusing on information and social recognition, which applies to the majority-minority relationship that differs in cultural or ethnic backgrounds from a theoretical perspective by focusing on conflicts between traditional cultural communities and modern society. Additionally, as an implication of this study, a pluralistic character of symbolic interactionism united by common frameworks of formal theories is proposed.

The paper presents new way of qualitative data analysis developed by Adele E. Clarke (2003, 2005) called “situational analysis”. Clarke’s project aims to further and regenerate grounded theory methodology after postmodern turn and shift it toward constructivist epistemology. There were presented main theses of Clarke’s approach in the article: critique of traditional grounded theory, grounded theorizing project using situational maps, social words/arenas maps and positional maps. The author of the article discusses reviewed approach, considering epistemological status of “situation” as a key concept in Clarke’s project, focusing on context instead of actions, introducing nonhuman actants into analysis and the problem of pre- conceptualization.

Opis:
The article aims at presenting the symbolic interactionism as a useful and flexible theoretical perspective in research on the human body. It shows the assumptions of symbolic interactionism in their relation to the human body, as well as explains how basic notions of this theoretical perspective are embodied—the self, social role, identity, acting, interacting. I depict the unobvious presence of the body in the classical works of George H. Mead, Anselm Strauss, Howard Becker, Erving Goffman, and in more recent ones, such as Bryan Turner, Ken Plummer, and Loïc Wacquant. I also describe the Polish contribution to the field, including research on disability, hand transplant, the identity of a disabled person, together with the influence of sport, prostitution as work, yoga, climbing, relationships between animals and humans based on gestures and bodily conduct, the socialization of young actors and actresses, non-heteronormative motherhood, and the socialization of children in sport and dance. In a case study based on the research on ballroom dancers, I show how to relate the theoretical requirements of symbolic interactionism with real human “flesh and bones.” I depict three ways of perceiving own bodies by dancers: a material, a tool, a partner; and, two processes their bodies are subjected to: sharpening and polishing a tool. I draw the link between the processual character of the body, of the symbolic interactionist theoretical perspective, and process-focused grounded theory methodology.

The intention of the author is to encourage the methodological reflection on the possibility of using the grounded theory methodology in the analysis of the situation of a person affected by a chronic somatic disease and their family. The author presents the key assumptions of classical grounded theory methodology developed by Barney G. Glaser and Anselm L. Strauss. Then, the author describes the constructivist grounded theory methodology by Kathy Charmaz, comparing its concept with classical approach. The rest of the text presents the experience of chronic somatic disease as a research area in which the methodology of grounded theory may be useful. Referring to the system model of the family, the author argues that the disease impacts the patient and their family. It should be considered by a researcher who uses the grounded theory methodology.

Throught grounded theory and networked agenda-setting approach the author presents media coverage categories that shape the narrative about the Polish baptism. His findings indicate the domination of individual perspective on the baptism of Mieszko, rather than a collective one about the baptism of the country. Furthermore, the data show a significant impact of the so-called “Millennial thought” of the card. Wyszynski presented in the analyzed media coverage.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this research is to explore the appropriate behaviors and characteristics of Patients for Patient Safety (PFPS) against the Chinese cultural background, especially the types and internal logical relationships of behaviors of PFPS.Material and MethodsIn this research, Glazer’s methodology principle of the traditional grounded theory was adopted, and the methods of objective sampling, theoretical sampling and snowball sampling were employed. Considering the diversity of the interviewed subjects’ gender, age, professional title, qualification and demographic characteristics, representatives of hospital management staff, doctors, nurses, patients and their family members from different provinces and cities across the country were selected for semi-structured in-depth interviews to assess the behaviors of PFPS against the Chinese cultural background. In addition, some PFPS reports were collected from network media to supplement the interview data. All interviews were recorded and collated into Word text documents. Qualitative research data analysis software Nvivo 12 was used to sort out the collected data, and the theme was separated out through the strategy of substantive coding and theoretical coding.ResultsIn this research, the appropriate behaviors of PFPS were taken as the research content; 6 categories of appropriate behaviors of PFPS were separated out; and a model diagram of PFPS was constructed accordingly.ConclusionsA model diagram of the appropriate behaviors of PFPS against the Chinese cultural background was constructed to provide theoretical guidance for relevant research and practice.

Zaakcentowałam zastosowane rozwiązania metodologiczne, tj. wywiad epizodyczny i metodologię teorii ugruntowanej w danych w ujęciu K. Charmaz. Uwzględniłam także wybrane stanowiska przedstawicieli fenomenologii i konstruktywistycznego nurtu w naukach społecznych. Zależało mi, aby tekst stworzył przestrzeń kulturową dla rozważań o namyśle nauczycieli wczesnej edukacji dotyczącym pracy z uczniami.
The article is an attempt to present the reflection models concerning working with students, which were constructed based on the analysis of the data gathered in a research project. I focused on providing the answer to the question of how doing reflection on working with students is documented in the narration of the research participants, i.e. early education teachers. I also tried to reconstruct a specific reflection way, which was created and followed by the interviewees. I tried to consider such aspects as: what triggers reflection?; how does reflection proceed?; what does it lead to?; when does doing reflection end? Moreover, I presented a strategy which was documented in the empirical data, and which the research participants used in order to stimulate their own thinking process, and named it talking for thinking. I emphasised the methodological solutions which were used in the research, i.e. an episodic interview and the grounded theory from the perspective of K. Charmaz. I took account of the following theories which allowed me to build a theoretical framework for thinking about reflection and methodological proceeding: constructivism from the perspective of H. Berner, N. Goodman and K. J. Gergen; the constructivist model of cognition and the non-classical sociology of knowledge from the perspective of A. Zybertowicz, A. Gidden’s structuration theory, H. Blumer and E. Goffman’s symbolic interactionism, phenomenology from the perspective of E. Husserl, P. L. Berger and T. Luckmann, and A. Schütz, J. Burner’s sociocultural approach, J. Dewey’s concept of reflective thinking, J. Kozielecki’s concept of human cognition and E. J. Langer’s notions of mindfulness and mindlessness. In the paper, I made an attempt to create a cultural space for considerations about early education teachers’ reflection concerning working with students.
