This paper highlights the storage charging and discharging issue. The study objective is to manage the energy inputs and outputs of the principal grid at the same time in order to maximize profit while decreasing costs, as well as to ensure the availability of energy according to demand and the decisions to either save or search for energy. A fuzzy logic control model is applied in MATLAB Simulink to deal with the system’s uncertainties in scheduling the storage battery technology and the charging- discharging. The results proved that the fuzzy logic model has the potential to efficiently lower fluctuations and prolong the lifecycle.

Opis:
The grid integration of large-scale wind power will alter the dynamic characteristics of the original system and the power distribution among synchronous machines. Meanwhile, the interaction between wind turbines and synchronous machines will affect the damping oscillation characteristics of the system. The additional damping control of traditional synchronous generators provides an important means for wind turbines to enhance the damping characteristics of the system. To improve the low frequency oscillation characteristics of wind power grid-connected power systems, this paper adds a parallel virtual impedance link to the traditional damping controller and designs a DFIG-PSS-VI controller. In the designed controller, the turbine active power difference is chosen as the input signal based on residual analysis, and the output signal is fed back to the reactive power control loop to obtain the rotor voltage quadrature component. With DigSILENT/PowerFactory, the influence of the controller parameters is analyzed. In addition, based on different tie-line transmission powers, the impact of the controller on the low-frequency oscillation characteristics of the power system is examined through utilizing the characteristic root and time domain simulation analysis.

Opis:
The publication describes one of the key elements of the new intelligent management system responsible for visual communication with car driver, indicating the parking space and displaying light messages regarding the directions. For a new parking solution with a reconfigurable structure, it is necessary to use a special LED grid that will be able to display the current solution regarding the number and size of places and their mutual arrangement on the surface of the parking lot. The LED grid that has been described has light points placed in aluminum mounting strips in the outer layer of the parking ground. The points can shine in different colors with continuous or intermittent light as needed. The parameter of this grid is 250mm, i.e. the distance between adjacent points in the X and Y axes. The LED grid system allows not only to highlight the selected free space for the driver, but also to display directions on the internal/maneuvering road of the car park.

Opis:
The distance relay using the transmission line impedance measurement identifies the type and location of the fault. However, any other factors that cause the failure of the measured impedance, makes the relay detect the fault in incorrect location or do not detect the fault at all. One of these factors is the fault resistance which directly increases the measured impedance by the relay. Another factor that indirectly alters the impedance of the transmission line is static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). When a fault happens, current injection by the STATCOM changes the measured signals by the relay and thus makes the calculated impedance incorrect. In this paper, a method is provided based on the combination of distance and differential protection. Firstly, from the current data of buses, faulted transmission line is detected. Then using the presented algorithm, the fault location is calculated on the transmission line. The basis of the algorithm is on the active power calculation of the buses. Fault resistance is calculated from the active powers and its effect will be deducted from calculated impedance by the algorithm. Furthermore, with choosing data of appropriate bus, STATCOM effect is eliminated, and fault location will be obtained.

Opis:
The electrical network is a man-made complex network that makes it difficult to monitor and control the power system with traditional monitoring devices. Traditional devices have some limitations in real-time synchronization monitoring which leads to unwanted behavior and causes new challenges in the operation and control of the power systems. A Phasor measurement unit (PMU) is an advanced metering device that provides an accurate real-time and synchronized measurement of the voltage and current waveforms of the buses in which the PMU devices are directly connected in the grid station. The device is connected to the busbars of the power grid in the electrical distribution and transmission systems and provides time-synchronized measurement with the help of the Global Positioning System (GPS). However, the implementation and maintenance cost of the device is not bearable for the electrical utilities. Therefore, in recent work, many optimization approaches have been developed to overcome optimal placement of PMU problems to reduce the overall cost by providing complete electrical network observability with a minimal number of PMUs. This research paper reviews the importance of PMU for the modern electrical power system, the architecture of PMU, the differences between PMU, micro-PMU, SCADA, and smart grid (SG) relation with PMU, the sinusoidal waveform, and its phasor representation, and finally a list of PMU applications. The applications of PMU are widely involved in the operation of power systems ranging from power system control and monitor, distribution grid control, load shedding control and analyses, and state estimation which shows the importance of PMU for the modern world.

Cybersecurity is still considered a purely technological challenge; however, despite all technological progress, this challenge remains unsolved – as emphasized by many high-impact attacks against public administration and industry worldwide. We postulate that the mere focus on technology fogs the bigger picture, since people generate, operate, and interact with all technological systems, thus making them socio-technical systems. Hence, in this commentary we argue for a change of perspective towards a holistic, interdisciplinary view on our technological infrastructure. By example of the European power grid – inarguably a critical infrastructure not only for daily life but also for the continuity of our polity – we show that through interpretation as a socio-technical system, systematic and interdisciplinary studies would allow to reveal how its (cyber)security is not only a technological matter. An interdisciplinary approach combining STEM disciplines and Social Sciences would additionally advance the understanding of stakeholders and their goals and mindsets as well as the manifold dependencies between technology and human actors. While interdisciplinary endeavours appear to be generally supported by funding agencies, reviewers, universities, and researchers, they rarely occur in practice. We discuss why this is the case and present ideas on how to facilitate more interdisciplinary research.

Opis:
This paper studies innovative application of sliding mode control (SMC) for a Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES) in grid-connected and autonomous modes of operation. The considered HRES includes a photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT) based on a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). The PV generator is coupled to the common DC bus via a DC/DC converter. The latter is controlled by an MPPT algorithm based on the Adaptive Perturbation and Observation Algorithm Method (APOAM) to search the optimum working of this source. A SMC is utilized to manage the PV voltage to achieve the Maximum Power Point (MPP) by altering the obligation duty cycle. The battery interfaced by a bidirectional buck-boost DC/DC converter can be charged or discharged depending on the production situation. On the one hand, the wind turbine conversion chain is equipped with a PMSG and a rectifier controlled to regulate the operating point of the wind turbine to its optimum value. During a Stand-Alone Mode (SAM) operation, the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) was used for controlling the output voltage in terms of amplitude and frequency delivered to the AC load. However, in Grid-Connected Mode (GCM) operation, the VSC was adapted to control the electrical parameters of the grid. To better appreciate the advantages of the proposed SMC approach, we have proposed a series of comparative tests with the conventional PI control in the operating modes GC and SA and under different scenarios. The proposed control strategy has undeniable advantages in terms of control performance and very low total harmonic distortion THD value compared with the conventional PI control. Finally, It is concluded that the proposed approach improves the quality and provides a stable operation of the HRES.

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are becoming more and more popular around the world, and Latvia is not an exception. This is mainly due to the increased efficiency and reduction in price of PV modules. However, Latvia still ranks below most European Union countries in the use of PV modules for electricity production. A significant problem for many farms and households in Latvia which use PV modules, is the lack of storage for the produced electricity. As a result, large amounts of electricity are sold for a relatively low price and while being bought from the main grid for a relatively high price. The aim of the study is to determine and compare the electricity consumption and PV systems producing electricity each month on the Jasmini Farm during 2020. The study shows that during the year, only 25.4% of all the electricity used on the Jasmini Farm was from PV modules, but the rest of the electricity was bought from the main grid. Furthermore, from all the electricity which PV modules produced in 2020, only 29.5% was used on the farm, while the rest was sold to the main grid.

Opis:
This paper presents the effects of BESS operation in the HV transmission network. The considerations undertaken in this paper are mainly focused on issues concerning the relationship between active power and frequency. It was checked how BESS influences the process of primary frequency regulation. Three types of frequency regulators have been modeled, which are part of the whole energy storage regulation system. The model of "droop" type and PI regulator, has been implemented. Moreover, due to the increase in the share of sources connected to the network by means of a power electronics converter, and thus the decreasing inertia of the system, it was decided to examine the influence of virtual inertia on the frequency response of the system. For this purpose, the PWM converter control system introducing virtual inertia into the system was modelled.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present a one-year performance analysis of four grid-connected PV systems installed at Ghardaia city in Algeria’s Sahara. The grid-connected PV systems are based on four different PV module technologies which are: monocrystalline silicon (m-Si), multi-crystalline silicon (mc-Si), cadmium telluride (Cd-Te) and amorphous (a-Si) PV module technologies. The PV systems based on the thin film technologies have their performance ratio better throughout the year when the performance ratio of the mc-Si technology is better in the winter season. The a-Si PV system has its performance ratio about 6.13 % more better than mc-Si and 8.90 % better than m-Si. The AC energy produced with the a-Si PV system is 13.32 % more than what the mc-Si system produces. It was found that the a-Si PV system performs better than the other technologies under the Saharan climate conditions of Ghardaia city. The energy payback time (EPBT) and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions of the different PV systems were analyzed. The EPBT and GHG emissions per year, vary from a minimum value of 2.8 years to a maximum value of 5.73 years and from 13.24 tons to 32.03 tons of CO2/kWh for CdTe and m-Si respectively. The CdTe PV system performs better in terms of EPBT and GHG emissions compared to the other technologies (m-Si, mc-Si and a-Si) due to its low life cycle energy requirement.

The smart grid concept is predicated upon the pervasive use of advanced digital communication, information techniques, and artificial intelligence for the current power system, to be more characteristics of the real-time monitoring and controlling of the supply/demand. Microgrids are modern types of power systems used for distributed energy resource (DER) integration. However, the microgrid energy management, the control, and protection of microgrid components (energy sources, loads, and local storage units) is an important challenge. In this paper, the distributed energy management algorithm and control strategy of a smart microgrid is proposed using an intelligent multi-agent system (MAS) approach to achieve multiple objectives in real-time. The MAS proposed is developed with co-simulation tools, which the microgrid model, simulated using MATLAB/Simulink, and the MAS algorithm implemented in JADE through a middleware MACSimJX. The main study is to develop a new approach, able to communicate a multi-task environment such as MAS inside the S-function block of Simulink, to achieve the optimal energy management objectives.

The article contains the results of the initial exploration of a new problem field in the area of energy security, covering a wide spectrum of complex threats and systemic risks facing the power industry undergoing rapid transformations towards cyber-physical systems. The purpose of the exploration, identification, and initial theoretical processing (conception, structuring, etc.) of the complexes of cognitive, decision-making and projection-organizational problems, which for the safety and reliability of the electricity supply, resulting from the rapid increase in internal complexity as well as complex synergies and interdependencies arising from the convergence of two-speed technologies - energy systems and information and communication technologies. The tendencies of such complex, turbulent systems for chaotic behavior and their ability to self-organizing behavior "without human intervention" threaten with sudden, unpredictable, dangerous initiating events that can cause uncontrolled cascades of disorders capable of overcoming all protective barriers, firewalls, and layers of protection. The spectrum of catastrophic consequences of large-scale power failures puts into question the current safety management model based on threat elementarization, vulnerability analysis, risk assessment, and crisis management, and prompts the search for a new paradigm in security management that would prepare critical energy infrastructures for 'normal disasters' better. The author of the article considers the usefulness of the security model based on systemic threats and risks as well as resilience management as a new energy security paradigm.
