Opis:
The modern geochemical classification of granitic rocks is based upon diverse criteria such as: mineralogy, geochemistry, tectonic environment and their origin. The alphabetic classification of S, I, M and A-type granites have been used to facilitate recognition of the origin, chemical composition and geotectonic setting. Of these, the A-type term has generated worldwide discussions in petrological communities. The authors discuss the geochemical, mineralogical and geotectonic features as well as the question of source rocks and co-genetic rock complexes of A-type granites at the example of the Mazury granitoid complex. The Mesoproterozoic Mazury Complex from the crystalline basement of East European Craton represents A-type group of granitoids, plotting in WPG (Within Plate Granites) and A2 type fields. The obtained results confirm usability and at the same time practical diagnostic value of the term of A-type for defining a special type of granites, distinguishable from the other ones.

Opis:
Twenty silver minerals of the sulphide, arsenide, selenide, telluride, sulphosalt and chloride groups were found in 13 locations in the Variscan Karkonosze granitoid pluton. Previously only one of these minerals was known from this area. The findings include species characterized in publications as rare or exceptionally rare, e.g., muthmannite and tsnigriite. They occur in pegmatites and quartz veins; their parageneses are described. The studies include determination of chemical compositions, formulae calculations and recording of XRD patterns. Inclusion studies in paragenetic quartz indicate that they crystallized from epithermal fluids with a common but low component of CO2. The results suggest that the minerals formed from trace elements (Ag included) in the Karkonosze granitoid due to very local degrees of recrystallization of the host granitoid.

Opis:
Petrological data and recently published U/Pb zircon SHRIMP ages reveal a protracted Variscan magmatic evolution in the Strzelin Massif (SW Poland), with three main stages of granitoid plutonism: 1 – tonalitic I, 2 – granodioritic and 3 – tonalitic II/granitic. The granitoids of the second and third stages form the Strzelin intrusion that is composed of three varieties: medium-grained biotite granite, fine-grained biotite granite and fine-grained biotite-muscovite granite. New SHRIMP data show that the medium-grained and fine-grained biotite granites comprise different zircon populations that reflect complex and prolonged plutonic processes. Two distinct magmatic events seem to be represented by well-defined zircon populations with apparent 206Pb/238U ages of 303 ± 2 Ma in the medium-grained biotite granite, and 283 ± 8 Ma in the fine-grained biotite granite. These dates, however, do not necessarily reflect the true magmatic ages, possibly being “rejuvenated” by radiogenic lead loss in zircons (impossible to resolve based on routine SHRIMP data). Based on field evidence, the third variety, the biotite-muscovite granite, postdates both types of biotite granites. The petrographic and geochemical features, including Nd isotope signature, along with various zircon inheritance patterns and ages, suggest that the parental magmas of the three granites originated from different crustal sources and were emplaced during three successive magmatic pulses.

Opis:
This article describes silver specimens of the size of tenths to a few millimetres, found in small pegmatites and quartz veinlets of the porphyritic granitoid area in 22 sites in the eastern part of the Variscan granitoid Karkonosze pluton, from 20 of which native silver occurrences were previously not known. The sites are scattered on the whole surface of the granitoid. The native silver occurred in wire, rod, platy, dendritic, anhedral granular and euhedral cubic and octahedral habits; in some specimens twins and fenster faces were also found. Associated with native silver small amounts of acanthite crystallized commonly, sometimes apparently formed by sulphur diffusion into silver. Inclusions of native gold, electrum, galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite occurred in the native silver. The parent fluids of the specimens were epithermal, because the homogenization temperature (Th) of inclusions in quartz, calcite and cleavelandite that were the host minerals of the native silver was generally 91–165ºC and for individual samples the Th range was 4–11ºC. The total salinity of the fluid was 2.4–7.2 wt. % with Na and Ca (hydro)carbonates as the main dissolved components and admixtures of K, Mg, Fe, Al, S, Cl and F. The parent granitoid contains Ag in trace amounts (0.034–0.056 ppm) and was probably the source of this element for the crystals of native silver. Migration of Ag was made easier by the presence of fluoride ions in fluids.

Opis:
There are few unresolved questions in the Earth Sciences which generate as much debate as the nature of the Hadean Earth: i.e. the rock record between the Earth’s formation and about 3.8 billion years ago. Current knowledge of the nature and origin of the earliest crust comes largely from studies of the mineral zircon (ZrSiO4). The oldest zircon grains on Earth (4.46 Ga) are found in Jack Hills, Australia. They represent a time capsule of what the Earth was like from ca. 4.4-4.0 Ga during the Hadean. The other ancien rocks (>3.8 Ga) are preserved in Antarctica, Canada, China, Greenland, Labrador, Western Australia and Swaziland, with the oldest known rochi on Earth from the Acasta gneiss in Northern Canada, dated at 4.03 Ga. Most likely, the second oldest rock record in the world (>3.9 Ga) may be derivedfrom the Nanok gneiss in the Nain Complex of the Saglek-Hebron area in the northern part of the Labrador Peninsula. Extensive investigation of these rocks will allowfurther characterizing the nature of the earliest preserved crust.

Opis:
The study presents fifteen oxygen-bearing secondary minerals of bismuth from the north-eastern part of the Variscan Karkonosze granitoid pluton in the northern zone of the Bohemian massif. The minerals were investigated by optical, electron microprobe, classic chemical, XRD, IR absorption and fluid inclusion methods. The late, very low temperature epithermal solutions most probably caused formation of sillénite, kusachiite, bismoclite, bismutite, beyerite, kettnerite, pucherite, schumacherite, namibite and eulytite. Solutions dominated by supergene (meteoric) waters were the parents for bismite, russellite, koechlinite, ximengite and walpurgite. The paper also contains information on early research on the investigated minerals.
