    The article deals with the collection of stories by J. Barszczewski Nobleman Zawalnia, or Belarus in Fantastic Stories (Szlachcic Zawalnia czyli Białoruś w fantastycznych opowiadaniach, 1844-1846) in the context of Gothic literary tradition in Russian literature of the 30-40-es of the XIXth century. The author comes to the conclusion that folk motives in the cycle Nobleman Zawalnia... transform under the influence of Gothic literary tradition, which could be perceived by J. Barszczewski indirectly, through the oeuvre of other authors. The usage of comparative methods allows to find out typological relations between the cycle by Barszczewski and the cycles of stories Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka by N. V. Gogol and An Evening on Khoper by M. N. Zagoskin.

    The present paper is devoted to the question of the past in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings in reference to the Gothic Novel and the way it approaches this subject. As an introduction I provide some background as to the definition and origins of both gothic and fantasy genres. I want to prove that they share many similarities and point out the connections between them. In the main part of my paper I present the creation of the past in the Gothic Novel and in The Lord of the Rings, showing that the past plays a very important role on both extratextual – as an inspiration for a writer – and intratextual levels – as a source of nostalgia, fascination and fear. This article was based on my bachelor’s thesis Elements of the Gothic convention in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

    The article deals with phenomena of the Gothic the most often described as a set of often-linked elements rather than a fixed genre. The text presents a variety of cultural incarnations of the convention: from the eighteenth century novel by horror movies to subcultural style of Goths. This essay also examines the basic Gothic concepts, like the uncanny and the abject, which determine the worlds depicted in Gothic narratives, especially characters who remain in close connection with the space formed as a labyrinth. Finally, the article is an attempt to answer the question about the source of the expansion of the aesthetics of the Gothic in the contemporary culture.

    The paper is devoted to the analysis of Mrs de Winter, one of the main characters from Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, as an example of a Gothic figure. The analysis traces the stages in the development of the heroine by demonstrating how she first becomes, through the process of gothicisation, “the Gothic damsel in distress.” Vulnerable and easily threatened, she is defined solely in relation to Mr de Winter, her aristocratic husband, whose status she is unable to match. As a result of her growth as an individual, Mrs de Winter is degothicised.We witness a change in her attitude toward her tormentors: she no longer feels intimidated; she starts developing in what we view as an identity-building process her public and personal sense of a mature and independent individual.

    The article is an attempt at presenting Joanna Bator’s novel Ciemno, prawie noc as a book belonging to engaged literature and using the popular convention to criticise society. The first part contains examples and theoretical considerations about the changes in the convention of the horror novel, which consists of a gothic novel with various genres such as horror, thriller and detective story. The matter of their social dimension was touched on, for instance, with reference to Noël Caroll’s theory, Scandinavian detective story or the books by Alice Munro. The second part of article is composed of the review of conventional implements used by Bator that are typical of gothic novel, detective story, horror and fairytale. The use of specific implements, their accumulation and the disturbance of the convention are interpreted as a way of getting the readers to loose the well-known schema and drawing their attention to the relevant social problems. The convention of popular literature in Ciemno, prawie noc is designed for something more than only entertainment.
    Artykuł stanowi próbę przedstawienia powieści Joanny Bator Ciemno, prawie noc jako utworu należącego do literatury zaangażowanej i wykorzystującego popularną konwencję w celu dokonania krytyki społeczeństwa. W części pierwszej znajdują się głównie poparte przykładami teoretyczne rozważania na temat przeobrażeń konwencji powieści grozy. Zalicza się do niej powieść gotycką z jej dalszymi odmianami gatunkowymi, takimi jak horror, thriller i kryminał. Kwestia ich potencjalnego wymiaru społecznego zostaje poruszona w nawiązaniu między innymi do teorii Noëla Carolla, kryminałów skandynawskich czy utworów Alice Munro. Na część drugą tekstu składa się przegląd wykorzystanych przez Bator konwencjonalnych narzędzi przynależnych do powieści gotyckiej, kryminału, horroru i baśni. Użycie określonego instrumentarium, jego nagromadzenie i zaburzenie konwencji jest zinterpretowane jako sposób na wytrącenie odbiorcy ze znanego schematu i zwrócenie jego uwagi na istotne problemy społeczne. Konwencja literatury popularnej służy w Ciemno, prawie noc czemuś więcej niż tylko rozrywce.

    La Vampire, ou la vierge de Hongrie (1825) d’Étienne-Léon de Lamothe-Langon (1786-1864) fait partie d’un groupe fort hétérogène de romans gothiques, genre particulièrement fécond à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle. Le but principal de la présente étude est d’analyser le rôle joué par le sang dans l’ouvrage en question. Afin de mieux développer cet aspect du roman, nous esquisserons d’abord l’avènement du concept de vampire en Europe occidentale au XVIIIe siècle, en mettant particulièrement l’accent sur le rôle de Dom Augustin Calmet (1672-1757) et de son Traité sur les apparitions des esprits et sur les vampires (1751) dans ce processus. Par la suite, nous nous pencherons sur la manière dont Lamothe-Langon explore les traits typiquement vampiriques en construisant le personnage principal de son ouvrage, la démoniaque Alinska.
    La Vampire, ou la vierge de Hongrie [The Vampire, or the Hungarian Virgin] (1825) by Étienne- Léon de Lamothe-Langon (1786-1864) belongs to a very heterogeneous field of Gothic fiction, a genre which was particularly popular in the late 18th and the early 19th centuries. The main purpose of the present study is to examine the role played by blood in the analysed work. In order to demonstrate this aspect of the novel more successfully, it will be preceded by a general overview of the gradual popularisation of the vampire as a concept in the 18th-century Western Europe, with a particular emphasis placed on the role of Dom Augustin Calmet (1672- 1757) and his Traité sur les apparitions des esprits et sur les vampires [Treatise on the Apparitions of Spirits and on Vampires] (1751) in this process. Thereafter, a more detailed consideration will be given to the way in which Lamothe-Langon explores the typical vampiric traits while portraying the main character of his book, namely the demonic Alinska.

    According to the traditional understanding, the role of history in literary works was te- aching by example. History was expected to provide readers with ready formulae for appropriate behaviour, to introduce models to follow and to identify with, as well as to explain the difficulties of life. In the second half of the eighteenth century such an appro- ach to history tumed out to be inadeąuate. This article presents Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto - the first Gothic novel in English literaturę - as a work that subverts exemplary historicism by reversing the traditional exemplifying role of history. Published in 1764, when neoclassical ideals were still being promoted by such important writers as Doctor Samuel Johnson, Walpole’s novel commenced a new trend in literaturę that fully developed in Romanticism proper. It is not really intended to teach by example or to ren- der medieval history in terms of modem Enlightenment standards. Instead of rational explanations and balanced opinions its readers get an abundance of supematural pheno- mena and extravagant events. With its emphasis on entertainment rather than education, the story is a signum temporis, a significant step on the way towards the priority of aesthe- tic values in literary works. The article focuses on the novel in the context of its publica- tion in the Age of Reason. The two different prefaces are briefly analysed, and the chan- ging critical reception is presented. Some attention is also given to Clara Reeve’s The Old English Baron as an immediate successor of Walpole’s book, and simultaneously a strong criticism of his innovative perception of the role of literaturę. Despite the multitude of un- favourable comments by eighteenth-century writers and critics, the conclusion reached in this article is that such Gothic novels opened up a new perspective in the literary world. Walpole’s role as the forerunner in this field remains unquestionable.

The popular novel was not only a product of emerging mass culture, but also an interesting social document.     Tekst poświęcony jest dziewiętnastowiecznej przestrzeni Londynu oraz nierównościom społecznym widzianym w świetle sensacyjnej, taniej powieści zeszytowej The Mysteries of London. Popularne dzieło stanowiło nie tylko produkt rodzącej się kultury masowej, ale i ciekawy dokument społeczny. Jego autor ukazał w nim radykalną diagnozę istniejących nierówności, całość zaś przyoblekł w niejednoznaczny garnitur powieści grozy.

    The paper proposes to read the dialogue of two generic traditions: the novel of manners and gothic fiction in Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. The generic dialogue in Northanger Abbeyconstitutes a particularly interesting case, as it appears at the very inception of the manorial tradition in fiction and thus bears a strong modelling function. The paper argues that Northanger Abbeyrepresents a subversive version of the novel of manners, which contextualizes and substantiates the transgressive character of the gothic.

    The article analyzes two texts by the Canadian Nobel Prize winner, Alice Munro – Lives of Girls and Women and Who Do You Think You Are? Both books draw from the Bildungsroman tradition, and given such origin, they rather seem to represent the genre of short story novel than that of short stories collection. The article’s author concentrates on the manner in which Munro depicts the coming of age of protagonists while using certain aspects of space and the Gothic convention.

    Gotycyzm jest prawdopodobnie tą częścią tradycji romantycznej oraz preromantycznej, która w najsilniejszy sposób spośród wszystkich innych obecna jest we współczesnej (pop)kulturze. Jest zjawiskiem niezwykle żywym, nie tylko dyskutowanym przez specjalistów – historyków literatury – ale nieustannie konsumowanym w ramach kolejnych pozycji literackich, filmowych, muzycznych czy grach komputerowych, których odbiorcy bywają nawet nieświadomi XIX-wiecznego rodowodu ulubionych dzieł. Z powodu swojego granicznego charakteru gotycyzm bywa jednak zaniedbywany w kształceniu historycznoliterackim polonistów. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie propozycji zajęciowej, której realizacja mogłaby stanowić krok na drodze ku wypełnieniu tej luki w dydaktyce. Opiera się ona na zestawieniu kilku tekstów dawniejszych (Zygmunta Krasińskiego, Romana Zmorskiego, Anny Mostowskiej) oraz współczesnej powieści Jakuba Żulczyka (Instytut). Celem zajęć jest pokazanie, iż gotycyzm może funkcjonować jako ahistoryczny kod służący m.in. do mówienia o opresji.
    Gothicism is probably this part of the romantic and pre-romantic tradition which is most strongly present in contemporary pop-culture. It is an exceedingly lively phenomenon, not only discussed by specialists – historians of literature – but constantly consumed as part of subsequent literary, film, music or computer games, the recipients of which are sometimes even unaware of the 19th-century origin of their favorite works. Due to its cross-border nature, however, Gothicism is sometimes neglected in the history of literature education of Polish philologists. The purpose of this article is to present a class proposal, the implementation of which could be a step towards filling this gap in didactics. It is based on a juxtaposition of several older texts (by Zygmunt Krasiński, Roman Zmorski, Anna Mostowska) and a contemporary novel by Jakub Żulczyk (Insytut [The Institute]). The aim of the class is to show that Gothicism can work as an ahistorical code serving e.g., to talk about oppression.

Brak jednolitego stanowiska badaczy w tej kwestii i toczące się na ten temat dyskusje potwierdzają zasadność podjęcia wskazanej w temacie problematyki. W wyniku badań przeprowadzonych na tle współczesnej ukraińskiej nowelistyki oraz za pomocą metod – filologicznej, porównawczej, opisowej, analizy komponentowej i semantycznej stwierdzono, iż w nowelach prozaika współwystępują elementy różnych stylów: gotyku, hermetyzmu, medytacji, surrealizmu. Artystyczny świat nowel W. Nazarenki charakteryzuje atmosfera tajemniczości spotęgowana odpowiednią symboliką, splotem świata realnego i nierzeczywistego, wyobcowaniem bohaterów, zdystansowaniem się od tła społeczno-kulturowego, refleksją nad problemami egzystencjalnymi. Kontaminacja wskazanych wyżej cech pozwala mówić o stylistycznej polifoniczności nowel W. Nazarenki.
    The article analyzes the short stories in V. Nazarenko’s collection Mechanical Egg in order to identify the writer’s stylistic idiosyncracies. There is no single point of view regarding this, which determines the discussions around this issue and the relevance of our intelligence. Research is performed in the context of studying modern Ukrainian novels. As a result of research conducted using philological, comparative, descriptive methods, component and semantic analysis, it was found that Nazarenko’s novels include elements of different styles: Gothic, Hermetic, meditation, and surrealism, which are organically combined. The artistic world of his short stories is characterized by an atmosphere of mystery, enhanced by symbolism, the intertwining of the real world with the afterlife, the isolation of the characters and distance from socio-cultural background, and their reflections on existential problems. The combination of these features provides a basis on which to speak of the stylistic polyphony of V. Nazarenko’s novels.
