Opis:
The study describes a new method of assessing the average age of the forest range with significant share of stands in the regeneration class. In proposed method, average age of stands in regeneration layer is calculated as a mean age of tree layer as well as layer of upgrowth, recruitment and saplings weighed by these layers fraction. Example of calculation of average age was performed for 7 ranges located in Kotlina Kłodzka (SW Poland) with total area of 48 653 ha. Average age of stands calculated by proposed method vary from 62 to 73 years and is lower in comparison to average age calculating according to current regulations from 5 to 14 years. Proposed method of calculation the average age of stands in shelter wood cutting system takes into account composed structure of stands in regeneration period by using age and share of all trees generation in stand.

Opis:
The article is a comparative study of the forests of the city of Poznań and the State Forests in Poland concerning functions of forests and forestry management (recreational development, economic division, harvest cutting, fellings, renewals, afforestation and the type of the forest management plan). The study objective is to demonstrate and analyse the basic differences in the function and management method between urban and state forests. In Poland 77.3% of forests are administrated by the State Forests National Forest Holding, while the urban forests constitute only by 0.2% of all Polish forests. They differ not only in terms of ownership and participation, but also in the species and age structure of the stands, their functions and principles of forest management. There is no appropriate instructions concerning the principles of the management in urban forests, whereas this problem does not appear in the State Forests. However, irrespective to the owner, a common definition of 'forest' is included in the Forest Act. Regulations relating to forest management in the forests of the city of Poznań are a reflection of the expectations of society that urban forests are for residents of the city, primarily a place to satisfy their needs of rest and recreation. It was the reason for adapting the principles of forest management. In contrast, forests managed by the State Forests are governed by completely different rules and perspective on forest. It results in a different structure of forest functions, the occupied area and legal requirements concerning this group of Polish forests. Foresters from the State Forests conducting forest management have clearly defined rules that are missing for other Polish urban forests. Excluding city of Poznań that is a very good example that one can meet the expectations of the foresters of urban forests and offer guidance on forest management, taking into consideration the specificities of urban forests and the expectations of society.

Opis:
The issue of rot detection in standing timber or stocked wood is very important in forest management. Rot flaw detection used for that purpose is represented by invasive and non-invasive devices. Non-invasive devices are very accurate, but due to the cost and complicated operation they have not been applied on a large scale in forest management. Taking into account the practical needs of foresters a prototype of low-frequency flaw was developed. The principle of its operation is based on the difference in acoustic wave propagation in sound wood and wood with rot.
Zagadnienie wykrywania drewna zmurszałego w drewnie drzew na pniu, w mygłach czy też na składach leśnych ma istotne znaczenie w gospodarce surowcem drzewnym. Wykorzystywana do tego celu defektoskopia murszowa jest reprezentowana przez liczną grupę urządzeń pracujących w technikach inwazyjnych i bezinwazyjnych. Urządzenia bezinwazyjne są bardzo dokładne ale ze względu na koszty i skomplikowaną obsługę nie znalazły zastosowania na wielką skalę w gospodarstwach leśnych. Biorąc pod uwagę potrzeby praktyczne służby leśnej, opracowano prototyp defektoskopu niskoczęstotliwościowego. Zasada działania urządzenia opiera się na różnicy w propagacji fali akustycznej w drewnie zmurszałym i zdrowym.

W opracowaniu dokonano analizy zmian leśnictwa jako miejsca pracy. Obecnie we wszystkich „leśnych” krajach europejskich obserwuje się tendencje spadku zatrudnienia bezpośrednio przy realizacji prac leśnych. Z badań przeprowadzonych w Zakładzie Ekonomiki Leśnictwa SGGW wynika, że gospodarstwo leśne o powierzchni 15 tys. ha kreuje 587 miejsc pracy, w tym tylko 90 w formie zatrudnienia bezpośredniego, zaś pośrednio aż 471 miejsc pracy i 26 miejsc w formie zatrudnienia indukowanego. Jedna osoba pracująca w leśnictwie posiada na utrzymaniu w wspólnym gospodarstwie domowym ponad trzy osoby.
After a short historical review, the forest as a working place creating jobs is discussed. Present trends in the forestry workforce in practically all European countries show a continuing sharp decline in the total number of jobs in the forests. When analyzing forest as a working place at local level it appears that a forest holding of 15 000 hectare contributes to creation of 587 jobs including 90 jobs as direct employment, 471 jobs as indirect employment, and 26 jobs as induced employment. Forest jobs provide subsistence for four times more people than the directly employed.

Opis:
The paper presents the concept of a schematic division of a forest into stand farms using two criteria i.e. forest function and natural forest type. Forest function is understood as the function dominating in a stand, namely productive, protective or social. The natural forest type was identified with the name of a habitat type because in forest typology habitat characteristics and stand attributes are treated jointly.
