Opis:
In this paper we reflect on some analysis conducted by researchers as Laura Balbo, Mary Catherine Bateson and Martha Nussbaum who, although having not had direct relations among them or specific partnerships, have greatly contributed to elaborate concepts and categories regarding our new vision of the well-being. This concept, so dear to the economist Amartya Sen, draws nourishment from thoughts and lived belonging to women’s life experience, particularly as concerning their capacity to organize their daily and family life, taking care of others, shouldering the vulnerabilities and building their biographical paths with creativity and adaptation. So we can understand what is a good life through the realization of our abilities, that is of each person, and not using a utility calculation. This involves a new approach to life quality and human development, that is exactly the capabilities approach described by Sen, rehashed by Nussbaum but, for some aspects, it was already present into the studies which characterize the gender prospective.

Polycrisis reality has introduced a novel context for examining the evolving values and daily functioning of individuals and families. By juxtaposing the visions of a good life and values of two family generations, the article investigates what young Poles and their parents consider to be important in their lives. The article begins with a literature review dedicated to intergenerational transmission of values and conceptual framings of “good life.” Drawing on data from 70 interviews (involving 35 family dyads) conducted in 2021, the empirical analysis focuses on five primary categories that emerged from the participants’ narratives regarding “good life” and values, namely: health, self-identity, family and friends, material and financial well-being, and the social contract. The article contributes to identifying the degree of intergenerational similarities and differences, as well as the crucial role of family in transmitting values and shaping visions of a good life.

The presented study focuses on the role of applied ethics(cist) in managing the quality of life in the post-risk society. Given that, from an ethical point of view, it is appropriate to reflect the quality of life also through other than quantitative, i.e. objective and therefore also measurable indicator, it is important to be also focused on the action of a person that leads to increasing his/her satisfaction, the feeling of happiness as a subjective indicator. The aim of this study is to point out the importance of ethical parameterization of the quality of life as well as the search for suitable concepts in its fulfilment.

Climate change has become a popular topic with a strong presence in media, political, scientific and ethical debates. This raises a question as to why we are not acting in accordance with our knowledge and are unable to do enough to protect our future. The paper argues that the problem partly arises from a lack of philosophical reflection about relations between different aspects of our personalities. Those different aspects are presented based on the reflections of Thomas Nagel on good, moral, and rational ways of life. I claim that all three need to be taken into consideration in order to answer challenge raised by the environmental dangers we are facing.

This paper is an attempt to illuminate today’s economic science with the light of Aristotle’s philosophy of economics. The author first describes Aristotle’s thoughts about the economy. Then, he distinguishes and discusses three Aristotelian principles: (a) economics should be a classical practical or moral science, (b) economics should not look for an unlimited wealth, but for the wealth necessary for the good life, and (c) economics should be aimed at the common good.

Our reasoning is based on the belief that contemporary applied ethics are closely related to innovation and the creation of good life. At present, it is increasingly connected with technical sciences or art. An increased risk has shown that applied ethics are not only a fashion trend, but also an important part of human protection, control of dubious practices of companies and public institutions, quality of life, environment as well as assessments of the impact of modern technologies. Its current theoretical potential and implementation experience suggest that it can be an important part of positive change and humanity's vitality. Its underperformance can lead to serious consequences and an increase in social collisions. Applied ethics is not only a tool for solving problems, but also by setting up preventive mechanisms and project creation and vision for the future.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to indicate that there is quite strong support in the text of the Nicomachean Ethics for the argument that its inquiry is “political” rather than “ethical” in character – the textual evidence provides reasons to challenge the traditional belief that Aristotle separated ethics from politics and started the rise of ethics as a new branch of philosophy. In addition, one can posit a hypothesis (and this has already been done) that the reader, whom Aristotle had in mind while writing what we now know as the Ethics, was a politician-lawgiver (and not just any educated Greek or – which is even less probable – any human being). So the reader aimed at in the Ethics is the same as the reader aimed at in the Politics – a politician-lawgiver. The Ethics and the Politics are a two-part but inseparable compound that together make a textbook for a politician-lawgiver. Both parts should be read together because the one cannot be understood correctly (i.e. as closely as possible to the intentions of their author) without the other. Aristotle studies human good not from the point of view of the individual but from the point of view of the human community. The highest human good – the philosopher’s eudaimonia – is achieved not by individual effort (or not fundamentally by that) but as a result of good laws and a well-organized life in a polis.

Opis:
The article discusses popular Stoicism (a modern, simplified, and often commercialized version of ancient Stoicism), which is offered as an answer to the uncertainty of modernity. The financial, political, climate, and health crises have been detrimental to the sense of agency and control over one’s life, leading individuals to seek ways of (subjectively) regaining it. Popular Stoicism can be viewed as an expert system providing individuals with a specific vision of happiness and the good life, in addition to offering practical knowledge on how to define an area of individual agency by negotiating the boundaries between that which is within one’s power and that which is not. Reflections begin with a juxtaposition of ancient and contemporary Stoicism, focusing on their different socio-cultural origins, followed by a synthesis of the principles of ancient Stoicism on happiness and the good life and a detailed interpretation of the ‘offering’ of popular Stoicism in the relevant areas. In the latter context, two chosen Stoic exercises (necessary to achieve happiness and the good life) are discussed—the ability to recognize what things depend/do not depend on us and Stoic emotion work. The practices and techniques recommended as a part of constant work on oneself are also supposed to teach individuals to adapt to their unstable reality. As a result, the popular version of Stoicism perpetuates the mechanisms of the culture of individualism, which holds the individual fully responsible for their life, and the therapeutic and counseling culture (based on one’s readiness to constantly self-improve), which is a new form of disciplining in a neoliberal society. Both are important elements of the everyday life and lifestyle of the middle class. This class is interested in self-fulfillment and is the primary target audience of contemporary Stoic handbooks. The consideration is based on fragments of books on popular Stoicism, mainly written by Polish philosophers, subjected to qualitative content analysis.

Opis:
Positive psychology is a rapidly developing branch of science and is gaining increasing popularity in the West and in Poland. Its main aim is to define the conditions necessary to achieve a subjective sense of well being. Considerable progress has been made in this direction already. There is no lack of ideas on the conditions that are required for living a positive, ‘full’ life, abounding in enriching experiences. The purpose of this text is to contrast the ideals behind certain concepts of positive psychology with the dominant values of consumer society. The vision of a good life set forward by, among others, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Martin Seligman, (the scholars who largely created the bases of positive psychology), would seem entirely incompatible with the priorities of consumer ideology. To what degree is it possible to harmonize the striving for well being with the challenges facing an ‘ordinary’ consumer? The author assumes that the contradiction could prove insurmountable and that the only choice provided by consumer society for psychological well being is economic well being.

J. S. Mill is commonly considered as a representative of psychological hedonism. However, his utilitarianism has also eudaimonic and perfectionistic aspects. Thus, various aspects are interelated with one another not only in his moral philosophy, but are present also in his political philosophy. Interpretators of Mill’s philosophy inquire: how those aspects can be reconciled and if Mill's conception can be consistent then? Main aim of the paper is to explain and justify the view, that the idea of happiness by J. S. Mill based on the greatest happiness principle is founded on both traditions present in the Ancient times: eudaimonism and hedonism. I assume, that: in philosophy of J. S. Mill, formulated in the perspective of both traditions of the idea of happiness and good life, hedonism can be reconciled with eudaimonism and perfectionsm. Philosopher can be qualified as many-sided and eclectic, thus denominating his exclusively as hedonist would be incomplete and would be a result of too hasty and imprecise reading of his works.

Artykuł prezentuje rekomendacje dotyczące zarówno diagnozowania i terapii przestępców seksualnych o niskim poziomie intelektualnym. Prezentowanymi metodami terapeutycznymi są Dawny Ja / Nowy Ja (Old Me / New Me) – metoda terapii grupowej, popularna i skuteczna w uczeniu osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną oceniania zachowań właściwych i niewłaściwych. Drugą jest Model Dobrego Życia (Good Life Model). Kolejną jest metoda służąca wydobyciu i wzmacnianiu dobrych cech, obecnych w każdej jednostce.
This article presents recommendations for both the diagnosis and therapy of sex offenders with low intellectual capacity. Although this group requires separate diagnostic methods, the same therapeutic methods can be used with them as the ones which are effective for offenders without intellectual difficulties. The sexual life of people with intellectual disabilities is more difficult and complicated than their functioning in other areas of life. In the case of sexual deviant behaviour, their social perception deteriorates, social ostracism increases and, at the same time, theirself-esteem decreases. This article presents several methods of diagnosingthe risk of illegal and inappropriate behaviours and the likelihood of reoccurrence of prohibited behaviours experienced by the diagnosed persons. The presented therapeutic methods are Old Me / New Me – a group therapy method, popular and effective in teaching people with intellectual disabilities to evaluate appropriate and inappropriate behaviours. The second method is the Good Life Model. Yet another one is a method used to reveal and reinforce the good qualities present in each individual.

The paper focuses on the relations between two 16th century works: Marcellus Palingenius’ The Zodiac of Life and Mikołaj Rej’s The Image of a Good Man’s Life. The philosophical poem Zodiacus vitae fell into oblivion in Italy, but has gained considerable popularity all over Europe since the 16th century. In Poland all the greatest Renaissance humanists, such as Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Rej, knew and read it. The latter, clearly inspired by the work of the Italian master, published The Image of a Good Man’s Life in 1558. Since the 19th century there have been some comparative studies of The Zodiac and The Image in the field of Polish literature. This article presents the current state of the research and points out general similarities and differences between these works, regarding both the story line and philosophy.

Opis:
The text presents thoughts of American philosopher of education Daniel R. DeNicola on liberal education contained in his book under the title „Learning to Flourishing. A Philosophical Exploration of Liberal Education”, published in 2012. He describes education realised in American Liberal Arts Colleges. Analysing paradigms in which liberal education developed and created its long and differentiated tradition, starting from the transmission of culture up to the skills of learning, DeNicola argues that none of them lost their validity. Building the thin (not thick) normative theory of liberal education aimed at the flourishing life, he states that we can still recall them all and rebuild the sense of that education. Its axiological distinctive features are freedom, autonomy, democracy and truth. DeNicola’s proposition is worth of discussing in Polish pedagogy where the prevalent equivalent of liberal education is general education. The main aims of the text are to strengthen the philosophical argument in favour of understanding general education more linked to liberal education because of its liberal elements, consequently to renew the sense of education as whole and finally to strengthen didactics philosophically.
