Opis:
In the present article the author argues that, according to Thomas Aquinas, there is love in God, because the act of will by its nature involves love. God naturally loves all existing things since he calls them into being. Consequently, the term “love” means the essence of God, the breath of love, and the person of the Holy Spirit. God loves the created things through the Holy Spirit. Then, through the Incarnation and the work of Jesus Christ God shows us how deeply He loved us. Finally, the notion God’s love is strictly connected with the idea that God is just and merciful.

Opis:
This text aims to show that the core of human divinity according to Aristotle is exercising the divine mind for its own sake. Being happy and thus divine is auto-teleological, and must not be reduced to any sort of instrumental value. This reading of Aristotle excludes the theist interpretations of Prime Mover as well as the attempts at identifying the human mind with God, mainly because both these (different) interpretations seem to make auto-teleological bios theoretikos impossible. The first do this by introducing the divine provision which makes people act for God’s sake and not for their own sake. The others reduce the special status of humans by taking away the divine part, in my opinion being the sine qua non condition of the concept of human divinity. All the interpretations of human divinity which I have presented above can be useful nowadays in the ethical, (bio)ethical, social or even political discourse. This shows that the history of philosophy is not only about the past, but also about the future.

W artykule przedstawiono podstawy teo-logii Guardiniego. Kulminacją bliskości Boga jest wcielenie, dzięki któremu możemy mówić o „ludzkim” Bogu i możemy Go „zobaczyć”.
Romano Guardini, one of the greatest theologians of the 20th century, can be called a ‘man of borders’. Guardini was born in Italy but lived in Germany. He was an educated theologian and philosopher, with a passion for knowledge of literature, art, psychology and pedagogy. Being a ‘man of borders’ has resulted in a comprehensive and wide-eyed glance at God, world, man, and their reciprocal relation to life, which has contributed to the development of deep religious culture of his lifetime. This article attempts to present the basics of Guardini’s theology. Precisely, it concerns a narrow range of theology derived directly from etymology. The foundations of the Munich Professor’s theology about the ‘word about God’ lie in the creative tension expressed in the words ‘Close God – Remote God’. Being the God that can be defined as unknown, completely different, outside the ‘boundary’, God is also at the same time a close God – in the revealed mystery of creation, in the image and likeness of God, in the relationship ‘me – You’ to which He invites. Also in the mystery of Providence. The culmination of God’s closeness is the Incarnation, thanks to which we can speak of a ‘human’ God whom we can ‘see’. The summary of the article constitutes a presentation of God’s paradoxes oscillating between the poles of proximity and distance.

Unlike in  the atheist existentialism, the Christian one finds the individual in palpable situations, seen as opportunities in the process of personal accomplishment. The existentialism is not a quietude philosophy, but it asks for permanent effort. The religious man has a meaning, a purpose, The Encounter with Absolute, his entire life being part of Propedeutica. He replaces the anguish with hope, with the joy of being closed to God which occurs in each moment when we are aware that we follow our destiny.

Opis:
The subject of the article Alfred North Whitehead. The Philosophical Faith of a Scientist and Its Influence on Contemporary Theology and Religion is Whitehead’s concept of God, which constitutes the completion of his metaphysical system. The system provides a comprehensive vision of reality taking into account the modern state of science, and proposing a speculative solution to such persistent philosophical problems as the relationship between mind and body, God and evil, or freedom and determinism and indeterminism. Section 1 presents a brief biography of Whitehead highlighting his adolescent dissatisfaction with Anglicanism and moving closer to Catholicism, followed by a phase of secularism and agnosticism, and a later mature philosophical conception of God and religion. Section 2 presents the basic doctrines of Whitehead's metaphysics, and section 3 shows how process theism differs from classical, especially Thomistic theism. The dispute about the divine immutability and impassibility, questioned by Whitehead and his main intellectual successor Charles Hartshorne, is emphasized. Whitehead’s concept of God inspired many contemporary theologians and became an important competitor of classical theism. Process theism has not gained wider acceptance, despite the fact that it is more consistent with the scientific view of the world and better expresses certain aspects of popular Christian religiosity. This was mainly due to the rejection by process philosophers and theologians of traditional eschatology, and especially of the idea of subjective immortality. However, the process concept of God contributed, among others, to the emergence of open theism, which also had independent ancient sources, and to the adjustments made by many philosophers within classical theism. In Poland, Whitehead's metaphysics and philosophy of God influenced, among others, the work of Archbishop Józef Życiński. It is also worth mentioning that the Polish Socinians are regarded as precursors of process theism.

Opis:
One of the most common clichés of our culture defines Judaism as the “religion of the Father.” For some this is just a neutral description referring to the fatherly aspect of the JewishGod; for others this is the very epitome of the patriarchal prejudice which privileges the masculine Father Figure at the expense of everything maternal. In my essay, however, I would like to challenge this staple association, by pointing to the simple fact that Jews themselves very rarely – if ever – describe their religion in openly patriarchal terms. In fact, when described in psychoanalytic terms, the role of the Father is here merely transitory: he is to inaugurate a series of subsequent detachments, starting from the disintegration of the first bonds of love (to maternal body and, more generally, to the body of nature) and ending with the complete neutralisation of the “family romance.” The Father Figure, therefore, is called upon only to counteract the power of the primordial “attachments” and initiate a process of separation which will allow the subject to establish himself as a free and mature moral agent, truly “born” into the world.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca, called the Younger or Philosopher, is the most important figure of the Roman Imperial Period. This Stoic philosopher made a lasting contribution to Stoicism. Seneca lived during difficult times and he was engaged in politics during the reign of his disciple, Cesar Nero. Seneca agrees with earlier Stoics, that God is corporeal and is a part of the world. Seneca discusses virtue as the ideal of “becoming like God” and thinks, that the virtuous man is an equal to the God. So he claims, that we have to learn virtues. However in this case we have the help of God, who gives us the intellect when we are born. Seneca reminds, that the life is not easy and only the indications of the philosophy concerning virtue preserve from the unjust fortune.

Opis:
The article aims at considering two general criticisms often formulated against the natural theology. First criticism is based on the thesis that the conclusions of the natural theology are not adequate with the religious beliefs of non-philosophers. It is widely known as opposition between God of Religion and God of Philosophers. One can find that argument in the writings of Blaise Pascal. I’m arguing for the thesis, that the natural theologian cannot fulfill the criteria given by the proponents of this argument. This is because the argument of the natural theology cannot contains the premises taken from the Revelation. If the argument of the natural theology would contain the premises taken from the Revelation, then it would be the argument of religion. But philosopher of religion (natural theologian) can’t do this, if he wants to formulate an philosophical argument. The second criticism is based on the notion of a rational person. In the light of this argument, the natural theology is successful only, if every rational person will accept the conclusion “God exist”. I’m trying to show that there is no philosophical argument that can guarantee it’s acceptance by some rational persons. The acceptance of the conclusion of the argument of the natural theology is a matter of personal decision. There is no logical argument, which can “force” rational persons (rational subjects) to accept it’s conclusion. But if this is true, the arguments for the existence of God are no worse than other philosophical arguments.

Ojciec św. Franciszek w adhortacji apostolskiej Evangelii gaudium wezwał do odnowy duszpasterskiego zaangażowania. Autor artykułu odniósł to papieskie wezwanie do księży-spowiedników.
Pope Francis called for a renewal of pastoral commitment in apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium. He pointed out that the way to this target is to participate in the “revolution of tenderness”. It involves imitating the way in which merciful God addresses a weak, sinful man in need. The author of the article referred the Pope’s call to priests-confessors. In the light of the numerous speeches of the Holy Father, he pointed out that the attitude of sensitivity is the imitation of the pattern set for us by God the Father, which found its embodiment in the person of Jesus Christ. He as a Good Shepherd becomes the point of reference for the attitudes and mode of action of a confessor towards an penitent. He pointed out that Pope’s incentives have above all positive character, because they emphasize the possibility of following God’s tenderness. However, they also contain in the form of a warning – some negative examples and an imaginative comparison of a confession with torture. These two aspects of teaching are complemented by the personal story of Francis – an indication of the significant number of confessors who have been authentic witnesses of God’s tenderness and mercy.

In my paper I undertake an analysis of chosen short stories of Jorge Luis Borges in which the problem of mysticism occupies an important place. I claim that Borges, whose works are known for covering philosophical issues of most fundamental importance, is a writer who describes the impossibility of reaching a mystical experience in the modern world. As far as philosophical background of Borges is concerned there exists a well-spread opinion that Borges, who readily confessed his admiration for Berkeley and Hume, was an idealist himself. My point is that even though the Berkeleyan epistemology influenced Borges, there is a fundamental difference between those thinkers which consists of the fact that in the philosophy of Berkeley there is a place for God. As a result it can be claimed that the world as an object of God's experience has a stable existence. There is no place for such a privileged being neither in the ontology nor epistemology proposed by Borges. The world as described by him can be called a fiction because there is no privileged subject whose experience would not be accidental and private. For that reason the description of mystical experience is always a failure when it refers to modern times. I demonstrate it at length by the analysis of the short story entitled The Aleph, while taking into consideration other texts as well.

In the book Źródło i noc. Wprowadzenie do współczesnego absconditeizmu [The Spring and the Night: An Introduction into Contemporary Absconditheism] (Kraków: Wydwnictwo WAM, 2020), Miłosz Hołda thoroughly presents the discussed issues and proposes interesting solutions. When being an ambitious attempt to elaborate an original position in an vital area of Christian thought, the publication calls for critical reflection and highlighting main problems, which is the purpose of this text. It is especially about two questions of key importance for theism: God’s (in)activity in the world and how to reconcile the “God of philosophy” with the “God of revelation.” In the first one, the basic problem consists not only in the (partially) incorrect approach to the scientific picture of the world, but also to the philosophy of science and theology of science. In the second area, the main shortcoming of Hołda’s analyzes is the discrepancy between the manifested support for classical theism and the lack of a critical look at its elements that make it difficult, and in some aspects impossible, to express the essential content of the Judeo-Christian revelation. The remarks contained in the article do not completely refute the principal theses put forward by Hołda, but lead to their modification, and emphasize the value of a scientific worldview.

Opis:
The article is an analysis of the cathegory of Presence in the context of religion. The scope is to show the phenominon of presence as a fundamental cathegory in the aspect of religious existence. Article mentions definitions of presense known in both classical and modern philosophy. Especially interesting for the work is the concept of God’s presence through: the word, the Providence, the world and the mystical experience. The matter of God’s presence is complemented by analisys of God’s secrecy often discussed in the religious literature, especially in the theologhy of spirituality. The text is featuring reciprocal correlation, dialectics of both terms and the consequences for the spiritual life. There are mentioned antropological conditions of the posibility for religious relationship, especailly relationship in which the essence is the presence – that are: capax Dei (man’s ability (and need) to relate to the Divine) and quaerere Deum (man’s ability (and need) to seak for Divine).

Opis:
In his First Letter to the Corinthians, Saint Clement of Rome offers a conception of God based on biblical texts, philosophical arguments (especially Greek), and juridical reasoning (especially based on Roman law). Taking into consideration the various terms that refer to God in the Prima Clementis, the author of this paper analyzes those that occur most frequently, including theos, kyrios, despotes and pater. He attempts to uncover the meaning of these terms in the Prima Clementis and in the preceding tradition, as well as the theological ideas that these terms were intended to express. In this way, the author aims not only to present the concept of God as elaborated by Clement, but also Clement’s cultural background which hitherto has remained in the dark. The word theos indicates God’s omnipotence, emphasizing his power to create and justify; as kyrios God brings order to the created world and establishes harmony among its various elements; despotes, Clement’s favourite term, describes God as the one who invites man to change his behaviour, the one who chooses him and justifies him with his grace; pater refers to the God of peace who encourages all believers to collaborate, especially the community at Corinth.

The paper consists of two parts. In the first one the author proposes his own formulation of the metaphysical proof of God's existence. The point of departure in this proof is the affirmation of the existence of many different beings (things). The second part is devoted to a more detailed metaphysical determination of the nature of God.

Opis:
The fact that the „Kingdom of God” issue is rooted in Old Testament, indicates the originality of the kerygema by Jesus concerning the God’s lordship. Preaching about the imminent arrival of the „Kingdom of God”, Jesus directs this idea towards himself, to show the God’s interest in each human individual – the person’s world and the deepest concerns. For instance, John Paul II addresses this personal dimension in the encyclical letter „Redemptoris missio”, where the God’s lordship means the person – and the person is Jesus Christ. Both social and personal-individual dimensions of the „Kingdom of God” provides inspiration for activating dormant resources and possibilities in a person to be confronted with the truth about God and man

Opis:

Opis:
In April and July 1952 Brno and Prague were the scenes of show trials of alleged “agents in the service of the Vatican and the USA,” contrived by the Communist state security apparatus to dispose of opposition Catholic intellectuals and writers. The trials ended with one death penalty, one sentence of life imprisonment and long prison sentences of seven to twenty-five years. Those convicted included one of the most striking exponents of 1930s and 1940s modern Czech verse, Jan Zahradníček (1905–1960), who was jailed for thirteen years. In the extreme conditions of incarceration Zahradníček never stopped writing poetry, or rather reciting it to his fellow-inmates, who learned the poems by heart. On his release from prison under the general amnesty of May 1960 Zahradníček – in the five months of life left to him – reconstructed the poems. This essay focuses on the theopoetics of his prison poems which picked up on the main topic of his postwar poems (1946–1951): the crisis of man and the tragedy of a humanism without God. Zahradníček’s prison verse is typified by both its striking theopoetic dimension, arising out of the poet’s solidly Catholic faith and religious experience, and its anthropopoetic dimension: in other words, poetry being for man something fundamental, in certain circumstances vital to him and his survival, and affecting him in quite basic ways. It is a special form of freedom within one’s compressed self and a special form of intensified self-awareness. The poems of Zahradníček’s dark years behind bars are not only testament to religious experience in the extreme conditions of brutal totalitarian dictatorship, but also to the fact that under extreme conditions an aesthetic force becomes a force of aesthetic resistance, and to how this manifests itself.
