We study the existence and nonexistence in the large of radial solutions to a parabolic-elliptic system with natural (no-flux) boundary conditions describing the gravitational interaction of particles. The blow-up of solutions defined in the n-dimensional ball with large initial data is connected with the nonexistence of radial stationary solutions with a large mass.

We examine the parabolic system of three equations $u_t$ - Δu = $v^p$, $v_t$ - Δv = $w^q$, $w_t$ - Δw = $u^r$, x ∈ $ℝ^N$, t > 0 with p, q, r positive numbers, N ≥ 1, and nonnegative, bounded continuous initial values. We obtain global existence and blow up unconditionally (that is, for any initial data). We prove that if pqr ≤ 1 then any solution is global; when pqr > 1 and max(α,β,γ) ≥ N/2 (α, β, γ are defined in terms of p, q, r) then every nontrivial solution exhibits a finite blow up time.

We prove Fujita-type global existence and nonexistence theorems for a system of m equations (m > 1) with different diffusion coefficients, i.e. $u_{it} - d_{i} Δu_{i} = \prod_{k=1}^m u_{k}^{p_k^i}, i=1,...,m, x ∈ ℝ^{N}, t > 0,$ with nonnegative, bounded, continuous initial values and $p_{k}^{i} ≥ 0$, $i,k = 1,...,m$, $d_i > 0$, $i = 1,...,m$. For solutions which blow up at $t = T <≤ ∞$, we derive the following bounds on the blow up rate: $u_i(x,t) ≤ C(T - t)^{-α_{i}}$ with C > 0 and $α_i$ defined in terms of $p_k^i$.

This paper proves global asymptotic convergence in a multitype epidemic model which encompasses both the S --> I and S --> I --> S epidemics. Systems are considered where the infection matrix may be reducible, and for which the system may be closed or can be open with a stable population size. New global asymptotic convergence results are obtained.

This paper is a contribution to the following question : consider the classical wave equation damped by a nonlinear feedback control which is only assumed to decrease the energy. Then, do solutions to the perturbed system still exist for all time? Does strong stability occur in the sense that the energy tends to zero as time tends to infinity? We prove here that the answer to both questions is positive in the specific case of the one-dimensional wave equation damped by boundary controls which are functions of the observed velocity. The main point is that no monotonicity assumption is made on the damping term.

Opis:
We are interested in the solution of Horizontal Linear Complementarity Problems, HLCPs, that is complementarity problems with more variables than equations. Globally metrically regular HLCPs have nonempty solution sets that are stable with respect to "right-hand-side perturbations" of the data, hence are numerically attractive. The main purpose of the paper is to show how the stability on conditioning properties of globally metrically regular HLCPs are preserved by a homotopy framework for solving the HLCP that finds a "stable" direcaion at each iteration as a local minimizer of a strongly convex quadratic program with linear complementarity constraints, QPCC. Apart from intrinsic interest in numerical solution of HLCPs, this investigation has application in solving horizontal nonlinear complementarity problems and more broadly in the area of mathematical programs with complementarity constraints, MPCCs.

Opis:
First, a fuzzy system based on if-then rules and with parametric consequences is recalled. Then, it is shown that the global and local ε-insensitive learning of the above fuzzy system may be presented as a combination of both an ε-insensitive gradient method and solving a system of linear inequalities. Examples are given of using the introduced method to design fuzzy models of real-life data. Simulation results show an improvement in the generalization ability of a fuzzy system trained by the new method compared with the traditional and other ε-insensitive learning methods.

Opis:
ASI/CGS contribution to CERGOP II project covered the following topics: landslide monitoring, production and quality check of zenith total delays estimated for a global as well as regional GPS networks devoted to meteorology applications, RTK and navigation tests, critical analysis of GPS long time series helpful for geodynamic as well atmospheric investigations. For what concern the landslides monitoring the two sites under investigation: Aliano and Avigliano are located in Basilicata region, (South of Italy). These sites are affected by a dramatic creep of the ground which in the past was the cause of severe damages to the buildings and roads in the areas. We will show the state of art of the activities comparing GPS with Perrnanent Scatter IN-SAR technique For what concern the routine production of ZTD we will show a critical comparisons of our solutions with radio balloon observations and a discussion about the assessment of their reliability. Finally the results of a navigation experiment by using differential correction provided by EUREF-NTRIP service will be shown.
