Opis:
Studies of the till structure and composition of the Baltija (Pomeranian) Stage of the Nemunas (Weichselian) Glaciation in Lithuania has enabled recognition of a multilayered till structure. This can be seen visually (colour, bed structure, interlayers, insertions of different composition and so on) and established from features determined by analytical and statistical methods (physical and mechanical properties, material composition, orientation and dip of longer axes of pebbles). Borehole log data from boreholes drilled during geological mapping showed heterogeneity within the subglacial till of the Baltija Stage and provided a preliminary picture of variations of its multilayered structure from S to N. This showed that two layers predominate in the subglacial till in the area of the South Lithuanian Phase while three layers are present in the area of the Middle Lithuanian Phase farther north. The petrographic composition of the gravel fraction as well as the orientation and dip of the long axes of pebbles measured in till beds in natural exposures and quarries further demonstrated the multilayered structure of the Baltija till. Research at key sections in areas of the subsurface extent of till of the East, South and Middle Lithuanian phases of the Baltija glacial recession confirmed the increase in the number of till layers from S to N. The physical and mechanical properties of the till also reflect its multilayered structure. Relative entropy values calculated for the grain-size frequency distribution of the Baltija till enabled evaluation of a change in its sorting along the direction of glacial ice advance from N to S. There is a correlation between the higher values of entropy of grain-size distribution and the rate of development of preferred orientation of longer axes of pebbles throughout the till section vertically. The formation of themultilayered structure of the Baltija till is ascribed to cyclic dynamics of the subglacial processes associated with the receding ice sheet; consequently, the number of subglacial till layers may be related to the marginal moraine ridges of different phases left by oscillation of the ice sheet margin during glacial recession.

Pollen analysis was conducted on organic deposits on a kame ridge at Haćki in northeastern Poland. The deposits are referred to the Eemian Interglacial. Slope sediments only covered these biogenic deposits. The glacigenic landforms therefore relate to the Wartanian Glaciation, and so this area has not been occupied by an ice sheet of the Vistulian Glaciation.

Documented type sections (Vyazivok, Stayky, Uman, Troitskoye, Altestovo, Roxolany and Lebedivka) provide a basis for Pleistocene stratigraphy between Kiev and Odessa, and have been used to characterise the heavy mineral composition and part of the light fraction of the Bug loess in this area. These sections document an almost complete succession of climatic change during the last 780 ka, worked out mostly using loesses and palaeosols though also in the case of the first two sections, of glacial deposits. The heavy mineral composition of the Bug loess in these sections documents five mineral groups on the basis of their resistance to weathering and susceptibility to deflation and aeolian transport. Radar charts with particular mineral groups indicate mineralogical and genetic trends in the loesses. Moreover, in some sections the light fraction of the loess investigated contains derived microfossils (mainly foraminifers) of Cretaceous age, indicating source areas for the loess-forming material, and constraining the palaeowind directions. The data obtained allow distinction of three accumulation zones of the Bug loess in this area, reflecting loesses derived from different source areas and transported by winds from different directions. In northern sections (zone A), the Bug loess was accumulated by winds blowing from the west and north-west. More to the south (zone C), the same loess was accumulated by winds from the east and south-east. Loess preserved in zone B, between these areas, could be accumulated by winds from either of these directions.

Opis:
The glacial history of the Svalbard archipelago is often a hot topic for researches, but the articles usually refer to a particular piece of Svalbard. The authors of this work studied many scientific articles based on the researches to find and collect this history.Svalbard archipelago is located in the Arctic, at the edge of the continental shelf of Europe. The end of shelf boundary noted occurrence of ice caps in the past glaciations. In turn, the main elements of the landscape of the archipelago are glaciers that are currently in a recession. Spitsbergen (the biggest island of the archipelago) sets the limit of Pleistocene glaciations, and the current state of glaciers allows determining the place where the recession is intense. The main aim of the authors in this study is to show this history only from the late Vistulian to the late Holocene (the beginning of 21st century). Interstadials and Stadials start time varies, as their duration in different places, according to various authors. It is very hard to collect all information and describe this history. By knowing the history of glaciation, we can distinguish in the late Vistulian: Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), Bølling/Older Dryas/Allerød and Younger Dryas (YD). LGM was the stadial in which was the maximum extent of ice sheet in late Vistulian. After this period, ice sheet began to retreat from the continental shelf. In turn, YD was the stadial in which the last advance of glaciers took place, about 11 000 years BC. In the Holocene we can distinguish Holocene Climatic Optimum (in the meantime short Cooling Holocene), Revdalen Stadial, Medieval Warm Period, Little Ice Age (LIA) and 20th century warming. The maximum extent of glaciers in Holocene was in LIA. In LIA, the extent of glaciers was bigger than in YD. In 20th century a warming started and continues until now.
Svalbard jest obszarem, gdzie zachowały się w różnym stopniu „ślady” zdarzeń glacjalnych. Dowodami ich wystąpienia są między innymi osady oraz formy glacjalne i fluwioglacjalne (np. Boulton 1979; Boulton i in. 1982; Landvik i in. 1998; Mangerud i in. 1998; Pękala, Repelewska-Pękalowa 1990; Lindner, Marks 1993ab; Ingólfsson, Landvik 2013). Bliskość tego obszaru w stosunku do centrów zlodowaceń powodowała, że kolejne epizody glacjalne „zamazywały ślady” poprzednich, niszcząc je lub przekształcając (np. Landvik i in. 1992; Mangerud i in. 1998; Zagórski 2007). Po deglacjacji następował zazwyczaj okres intensyfikacji działania procesów nieglacjalnych (paraglacjalnych), np. morskich, peryglacjalnych (Mercier, Laffly 2005; Strzelecki 2011; Zagórski i in. 2012). Stąd najlepiej zachowały się pozostałości najmłodszych zdarzeń i epizodów glacjalnych, np. małej epoki lodowej (np. Baranowski 1977abc; Lindner Marks 1993b; Werner 1993; Wójcik, Ziaja 1999; Reder 1996ab;  Birkenmajer, Łuczkowska 1997; Svendsen Mangerud 1997; Zagórski i in. 2008, 2012; Rodzik i in. 2013).

Opis:
This paper is a summary of the results of research on the accumulation conditions of the Upper Younger Loess (LMg) in Poland and Bug loess (bg) in Ukraine from the maximum stage (MIS 2) of the Vistulian (Weichselian) Glaciation in central and eastern Europe. These studies included an analysis of the morphological (topographic) situation of the loess cover, its grain size and heavy mineral composition, the preserved structures of loess sedimentation as well as mollusc and pollen analyses of this loess. They revealed that the accumulation of Upper Younger Loess (UYL) might have been more dependent on the prevailing moisture conditions than previously thought. These conditions could have been caused by cold air masses from an ice sheet and warm air masses from the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic coming together in the Carpathians and the Holy Cross Mountains and favouring the formation of dust storms and precipitation. In this process, a loading of loess dust (formed from local rocks weathering in periglacial conditions) by atmospheric moisture particles was especially significant. The moist substrate not only favoured the periodic development of vegetation and molluscs but also enabled the interception of dust and the accumulation of an increasingly thick loess cover. Westerly and south-westerly winds predominated in the UYL as indicated by the topographic position of loess patches and the mineral composition of the studied loess. Periodically an increased air circulation from the east and northeast occurred.

Opis:
The study was conducted in the Rzymsko esker, in the Eastern part of the Turek Upland Plain, within the range of the Warta Glaciation (Saalian II). The form was accumulated in a tunnel valley, which was partially filled with esker sediments. Lithofacies analysis, extended by a detailed analysis of clasts, made it possible to identify a considerable variability of sedimentation conditions. At the initial stage, transport and accumulation of sediments took place in the conditions of high energy hydraulic flows or hyperconcentrated flows. The flow energy rose cyclically, which was recorded as sediments coarsening. Deposits of boulders as well as massive and cross-bedded gravels were identified, a record of catastrophic glacial floods. During the later stage of esker formation, sandy and gravelly sediments were accumulated in an open crevasse. The strong erosional force of subglacial water is confirmed by an extremely high content of local rocks in the gravelly fraction (30–87%) and its very good roundness. Zingg shape analysis (1935) revealed a clear predominance of oblate forms among local clasts and equant fennoscandian erratics. A dependency was also found between the processing method and petrographic characteristics.

Wśród narzutniaków wskaźnikowych nie znaleziono ani jednego egzemplarza skały węglanowej.
Sandy and gravel deposits, originating from the ice sheet transgression during the younger stadial of the Warthanian glaciation in Łubienica-Superunki, have been examined in terms of petrographic composition of the middle-coarse gravel fraction and pebble fraction. The distinct predomination of crystalline rocks, no carbonate rocks and a 10% share of sandstones have been ascertained. Quartz has reduced its share from about 9% in the middle-coarse gravel fraction to 0.6% in pebble fraction. The Scandinavian erratics have been identified within the 20–60 mm fraction. Among them the indicator erratics from the Åland Islands, neighboring Uppland, North Baltic bottom and Småland have been found. There was no single carbonate rock found among the so called statistical erratics.

Opis:
The Macroregion of the Mazurian Lake District and the adjoining mesoregion of the Sępopol Plain were formed during Baltic glaciation and in the post-glacial period. The existing habitat differentiation, especially large variations in the soil cover, is divided into three distinct landscape zones. The northern areas of the district are typical heavy and very heavy soils, composed of tight clays and loams, represented by brown soils and black earths. They contribute to the ecosystem stability. Hydrogenic soils occupy only a small area. Agricultural production, when carried out correctly, should not threaten the habitat and should be in harmony with the area in question. The central, moraine area of the Mazurian Lake District, with unique natural qualities, is comprised of different soil forms and various soil covers. Brown and lessive soils are dominant among mineral soils. Deluvial soils are common, which is a warning sign on the danger of erosion. Contribution of hydrogenic soils is clearly seen. Protection of these soils, as well as re-naturalisation of the selected areas, is becoming vital. This area badly requires ecological farming. Light and very light soils, mainly rusty and podzo! soils, accompanied by large areas of sensitive for transformation hydrogenic, muck, and mucky soils occur in the southern part of the district, in the area of outwash plains. Outwash plains call for complex solutions to improve the quality of their mineral soils, as well as utilisation and protection of hydrogenic soils.

Opis:
The most representative and long Late Pleistocene pollen sequences covering the late glacial of the penultimate glaciation (Warta/Pripiat), the last interglacial (Eemian/Muravian) and the early glacial of the Last Glaciation (Vistulian/Poozerie) from the territory of Poland and Belarus have been correlated. The resemblance ofpollen spectra in these pollen sequences and a parallel succession of Regional Pollen Assemblage Zones in the considered time intervals suggest that the natural environment of Poland and Belarus underwent synchronous changes under unidirectional climatic transformations. Qualitative and quantitative features of the Regional Pollen Assemblage Zones show similarities and differences in vegetation and climate changes in the study area. A comparison of the pollen spectra from Poland and Belarus suggests that both territories were affected by a similar climate particularly during the cold intervals. Some differences between the compositions of the pollen spectra were noticed as concerns the interglacial period. For instance, Abies and Taxus pollen as well as significantly high percentages of Calluna vulgaris pollen in NE Poland towards the end of the period are present only in the Polish sections. This may suggest a more Atlantic type of the climate during the Last Interglacial in Poland than in Belarus.

Opis:
In this paper we have analyzed the influence of the Weichselian ice sheet advance on the groundwater system in the Odra lobe area using hydrogeological numerical modelling performed with the finite difference method. The results indicate entire re-organization of the groundwater system in relation to non-glacial times mainly affecting the flow directions, velocities and fluxes. The re-organization of groundwater flow was caused by the pressure gradient imposed by the sloping ice sheet surface especially obvious under the ice margin and some distance in front of it. Simulated groundwater flow velocities are significantly higher than the present velocities in that area while the major groundwater flow direction is to the south, i.e. opposite to the present direction. Coupling the simulation results with assumed basal melting rate suggests that only a small fraction of basal meltwater [~24%) could have drained through the bed. The surplus water likely accumulated at the ice/bed interface facilitating faster ice flow of the Odra lobe due to enhanced basal sliding and bed deformation.

Southern part of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet terminated in large lobes projecting tens of kilometres beyond the main ice sheet margin. One of the main ice lobe was the Odra lobe localized in NE Germany and NW Poland. In this study concise description of current morphology of the Odra lobe area is given with special reference to subglacial hydraulic conditions during the ice sheet advance. Subglacial conditions were simulated by using time-dependant three-dimensional numerical model, and obtained results were compared to geological observations. The results show entire groundwater system alternation that affected the ice/bed coupling and influenced formation of specific subglacial landforms. Coupling the simulation results with empirical estimates of basal melting rate suggests that only a small fraction of basal meltwater could have drained to the ice forefield as groundwater. Adverse slope of the low-permeable ice bed hampered water drainage, and led to water accumulation at the ice/bed interface that in turn facilitated basal sliding and bed deformation.

Opis:
Lacustrine sediments representing Marine Isotope Stage 11 (MIS 11) were found in Hermanów (SE Poland) in a present-day closed depression under a thin cover of Weichselian and Holocene deposits (1.4 m). These sediments filled a palaeolake created as a result of melting of a dead-ice block at the end of MIS 12. Geological research has excluded the presence of an ice sheet during MIS 12 in this area. The lobe of the ice sheet of this glaciation was located several kilometres to the west of Hermanów. The palaeolake was part of a larger palaeolakeland in southeastern Poland, formed during MIS 11. The palaeomorphology of this interglacial is evident in the contemporary relief of the area and the outline of the lakes corresponds to the pattern of the closed palaeodepressions. Based on the record of sediments from Hermanów, a new perspective regarding the sub-division of MIS 11 is presented. Two regressive phases are observed in the Holsteinian Interglacial (MIS 11c) - OHO and YHO. The subsequent substages with five cold fluctuations according to the newest stratigraphic standards should be assigned to MIS 11b with a very clear cooling and a slightly warmer MIS 11a. Carbon isotopic composition of organic matter corroborates geological and environmental analysis. The isotopic composition suggests two cooling periods: OHO and MIS 11b. Stable climatic conditions with little temperature fluctuations persisted between the cooling periods.
