Opis:
The present paper aims at analyzing one of the most recent Divov’s stories entitled Рыжий пес Иж (2016). The text is interesting both due to its literary genre hybridity (it embraces elements of a melodrama, a horror story, a detective story, urban fantasy and a fairy tale) and the topics it touches upon (especially animalistic issues). Divov deploys the well-known literary and cinematic motif of a soul penetrating an object and creates a story of motorcycle haunted by a dog’s soul. Due to its original solutions (inter alia referring to films) Divov’s story is an interesting work illustrating the permanent interrelations between literatures and movies as well as the author’s exploration within this scope. Moreover, the manner of creating the animal character and placing it within the structure allow for including Divov’s story into the group of contemporary literary works reflecting the proanimal trends in Russian culture.

A perennially fruitful activity in Gothic studies is to track the development of Gothic tropes as popular literature evolves. Joseph Conrad’s career, which spanned Victorianism and early Modernism, provides examples of the evolution of certain Gothic conventions between early- and late-career work. Conrad’s collaboration with Ford Madox Ford on Romance (1903) is an early example of Conrad’s exposure to, and use of, Gothic tropes, especially relating to Catholic ghost-seeing. This paper demonstrates similarities between Romance’s uses of the trope of Catholic superstition and those of three classic Gothic novels, and also outlines the trope’s lasting effect on Conrad’s later work.

GREEK LITERATURE
Opis:
The prologue of Euripides' Hecuba is delivered by the ghost of Polydorus, one of the sons of Hecuba and Priam. Polydorus tells the spectators about his own fate and mentions the earlier apparition of the spirit of Achilles, who demanded that the Greeks sacrifice the captive Polyxena to him. The present article centres on the questions of why Euripides introduced the ghost of Polydorus on stage and what his spectre has in common with the dream related by Hecuba just after the prologue. It is argued that, by introducing the ghost scene, Euripides creates a link between his play and Sophocles' Polyxena.

This article is a study devoted to the BBC adaptation of a ghost story by Montague Rhodes James, “Oh, Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad.” The ideas of the spectral gaze and sympathetic spectreship are used to submit that in the film the setting itself is the spectre, with which/whom the viewer is invited to identify. This rearrangement-in comparison with the situation in the original story-casts the spectral setting both in the role of the haunting presence and the victim of an otherworldly (human) intrusion. A detailed analysis of the use of the camera supports the argument.

A hybrid watermarking algorithm with an optical watermark image based on singular value decomposition (SVD) ghost imaging is designed. Simultaneously, the blended watermarking algorithm is designed based on 4-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT), discrete cosine transform (DCT) and singular value decomposition (SVD). The 4-level diagonal sub-band image is obtained by performing 4-level two-dimensional wavelet transform on the original image, and the coefficient matrix is produced by applying the discrete cosine transform on the 4-level diagonal sub-band image. Then, three matrices are obtained by performing the singular value decomposition on the coefficient matrix. In addition, the optical watermark image is encrypted by an SVD ghost imaging system. The system could generate a secret key, and unauthorized users could not decrypt and reconstruct the original watermark image without this key. Later the encrypted watermark image is generated into the other three matrices by singular value decomposition. Afterwards, the encrypted watermark is embedded in the host image by mutual operation of different matrices in the algorithm. Simulation results validate the feasibility of the proposed hybrid watermarking scheme.

Opis:
The Ghosts of the Louvre by Enki Bilal embodies  an exhibition of this artist which took place in this same place. The author offers an unusual visit to the museum: he has chosen works from which he brings up so many ghosts. The artist juxtaposed the ghosts and the photographs taken and built a biography for each protagonist. Using geocriticism, we will answer the following questions: how does the author take over the museum to build multiple and heterogeneous parallel worlds? How does the museum become both a place of terror and of admiration?

Am in Eskew is the epitome of an independent podcast, written, produced and performed by two people – Jon Ware and Muna Hussen. It tells the story of David Ward (Jon Ware), a man trapped in the city of Eskew, where nightmares become real. The story offers manifold answers and interpretations, depending which genre and mode of reception we choose to follow. On a literal level it is a fantasy horror story about a cursed city that tortures its entrapped residents by creating cityscapes full of monsters, spatial and body horror (Eskew as a landscape); on a metaphorical level I Am in Eskew is a representation of mental illness and mental disorders (Eskew as a mindscape). The present article discusses the use of medium in I Am in Eskew and the capabilities of podcasts in creating an immersive horror story (Eskew as a soundscape) as well as possible interpretations of the podcast, focusing on the concept of hostile architecture as an expression of the late capitalist inclination to dehumanize various aspects of human life (space, relationships etc.). The article discusses hostile architecture as a form of narration and narration as a form of hostile architecture through the lense of Derridian hauntology.

Opis:
The Middle Miocene (middle Badenian) "gypsum-ghost" limestones composed of calcite and/or sulphur pseudomorphs after selenitic gypsum, are a salient feature of the Polish sulphur deposits from the northern Carpathian Foredeep (S. Poland). Sulphurous rocks (including the gypsum-ghost limestones) are present within the evaporite unit, the so-called "Chemical Series", and are commonly believed to be lithological equivalents of synchronous gypsum deposits, resulting from regionally extensive, wholesale replacement of the sele-nite lithofacies by limestones and limestone + native sulphur. However, detailed geochemical examination of regional major and minor element compositions in these unusual carbonates suggests considerable internal differences. Distinct variations in chemical distribution along the main development of the Osiek-Baranów Sandomierski native sulphur deposit, together with the associated barren limestone areas, are clearly recognized. The pattern of the geochemical parameters of these gypsum-ghost limestones is inconsistent with an epigenetic model of formation of the Polish sulphur deposits (wholesale replacement of sulphate deposits by carbonates + native sulphur) and argues for their formation within a sedimentary-early diagenetic regime.

The fourth instalment of the ‘Nubica onomastica miscellanea’ series offers a massive batch of corrections to personal names found in Christian Nubian sources. The anthroponyms discussed in this paper come exclusively from Old Nubian documents discovered at Qasr Ibrim and published by Gerald M. Browne and Giovanni Ruffini. The article includes simple re-readings of anthroponyms on the one hand and more elaborate reinterpretations of whole phrases containing them on the other. Identification with known foreign names and etymologies for many local Nubian names are proposed, greatly contributing to our understanding of medieval Nubian naming practices. Last but not least, many ghost-names are identified and their true meaning is explained.

In this article, a systematic solution for mitigating the DFG (Derelict Fishing Gear) problem has been presented using an example of a DFG wreck operation. The planning process has been described in detail and the influence of ghost net recovery on the marine environment has been shown. The research was performed on selected wrecks found in the Polish economic zone and the method consisted of scanning the sea bottom using 2D sonar. Based on the information obtained by the sonar, the ghost nets were later retrieved using a creeper (in cases where the ghost nets were lying on the sea bottom) or with the help of divers (in cases where the nets were sitting on the wrecks). The results have shown that, taking into consideration the research area of the Baltic Sea, the presented method will be satisfactory in most cases.

The article considers the association between puppets and the occult before examining aspects of the show and how representations of historic and contemporary performances differ. Finally, the authors’ utilization of the Punch and Judy tradition in the stories is analyzed.

This paper offers corrections and new readings to names found in eleven inscriptions originating from Faras. Inscriptions were discovered at different periods, ranging from the visit of Karl Richard Lepsius in 1844 to the rescue excavation by the Polish archaeological mission of Kazimierz Michałowski in 1961–1964. The material covers different types of sources (epitaphs, visitors’ inscriptions, subscriptions, and an owner’s inscription) in three languages (Greek, Coptic, and Old Nubian) and spans roughly the whole Christian period in Nubia, from the seventh to the fourteenth or even fifteenth centuries. The corrections include both ‘cosmetic’ improvements in reading (e.g. from the form ⲁⲛⲁⲛⲉ to ⲁⲛⲁⲛⲏ) as well as identification of ghost-names (e.g. the highly unusual name Theoria, which is in fact a misreading of Theophil).

It is God who is the subject of creatio continua; in Christianity it is a triune God. Fundamentally divine nature, Divine Persons: God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit, who in the logic of the internal life of the Trinity is third and in relation to the world the most direct. The personal specificity of the Third Divine Person predestines it to activity, creativity, to stirring creative power and action in created beings. The Holy Spirit develops and unites, creates the interior of the beings, combines them and strengthens the link with the Creator. This ongoing creation is encoded in the act of creation and is in keeping with the workings of Providence, which also is a creation of the Trinity, and indirectly a creation of people: individuals and societies. Participation in the act of creation stands in proportion to the growth in holiness, which means it is proportional to becoming a person. Created beings personalize themselves through participation in creatio continua, and by participating in this act, they personalize themselves. All this is implemented though the activity of the intellect, will and emotions. It is Jesus Christ in his capacity of God and man who occupies the centre stage of the ongoing creation.
