    This article reflects on technical and technological progress in light of society aging and on its impact on the society and economy, as well as on the states’ socio-economic development from the perspective of social science. The author also discusses the complex effects of population aging and describes the last stage of human life. The elderly face numerous limitations (especially health problems) and modern technology can provide appropriate solutions. Gerontechnology is the answer of modern science to the needs of the social class in question. The article provides examples of enhancing the quality and comfort of elderly people’s lives with the use of innovative products and services.

    As part of this article, research work aimed at acquiring new knowledge regarding the analysis and assessment of arbitrarily selected gerontechnology: personal care robots for older adults. The results planned to be achieved under the article have not been reflected in previous scientific studies. Until now, no research has been carried out to assess this technology regarding heterogeneous criteria. The existing research results only concern the study of the acceptability of the technologies used by older people to improve their quality of life. The opinions of prospective potential users were not considered as well as their age and place of posting or education. Neither were marketing, social and ethical aspects, competitiveness or innovation. The author will use the proprietary methodology of prospective technology analysis (PAT) to analyse and evaluate the technology. This methodology allows assessing the current state of technology. It enables providing knowledge on characteristic features of the technology, current and potential applications of a given technology and necessary for the development of analysed resource technologies, as well as the impact of technology on the environment and the environment on technology.

    The increasingly more visible trend of population ageing necessitates creating technologies supporting the functioning of older adults. Consequently, more gerontechnologies emerge designed to help the older adults in their daily functioning, from devices monitoring the health to special trolleys improving the mobility or Virtual Reality devices for active learning. This article aimed to determine the most desired group of gerontechnologies among current and future users. It focused on individual assessments of the most desirable group of gerontechnologies based on various criteria. The investigation aimed to find the criterion rated the highest in the selected group of gerontechnologies. The gerontechnology group was assessed against seven groups of criteria distinguished by the authors, i.e., Technology Innovation, Technology Demand, Social and Ethical Criteria, Technology Usability, Technology Functionality, Technology Ease of Use and Technology Use Risk. The survey was conducted in the form of a questionnaire, using CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) and CATI (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interview) methods, with the research sample comprised of 1 152 residents of Poland. Thus far, no studies have been conducted to evaluate this group of technologies based on the above-mentioned criteria.

Dlatego też zdefiniowano pojęcie „gerontechnologia”, przedstawiono genezę wykorzystania inżynierskich środków technicznych w omawianym obszarze, a także pokazano wybrane przykłady zastosowania gerontechnologii we wspomaganiu poprawy jakości życia osób starszych.
    In the article the subject of gerontechnology application was undertaken. Therefore “gerontechnology” term was defined, genesis of using engineering technical means in the defined area was introduced, and the selected examples of gerontechnology application for supporting the improvement of quality of life of older persons were shown.

    This article emphasizes the importance of development of new interdisciplinary branch of science called gerontechnology. The main goal of this publication is to reflect on the opportunity to adapt new technologies in the service of elderly people. In the first part I review the potential fields of application of new technologies in different spheres of life of an old person. I focus mostly on technologies used in social care, healthcare, those stimulating social and civic participation, as well as those aiming at education and entertainment. In the second part I point at various barriers and limitations that impede the applicability of new technologies on the practical ground. In the third part I elaborate on moral and ethical dilemmas which are inextricably associated with the emergence of new technologies and their exploitation by humans. Conclusions include, among others, a postulate to incorporate telecare and telemedicine solutions into the mainstream senior policy in Poland.
    Artykuł podkreśla znaczenie rozwoju nowej interdyscyplinarnej gałęzi nauki zwanej gerontechnologią. Celem publikacji jest refleksja nad możliwością zaadaptowania nowych technologii w służbie seniorom. W części pierwszej dokonuję przeglądu potencjalnych możliwych zastosowań nowych technologii w różnych obszarach życia człowieka starego. Szczególną uwagę poświęcam technologiom stosowanym w opiece socjalnej, służbie zdrowia, stymulującym partycypację społeczną i obywatelską oraz służącym edukacji i rozrywce. W części drugiej zwracam uwagę na bariery i ograniczenia, które utrudniają aplikowalność rozwiązań technologicznych na gruncie praktycznym. W części trzeciej podkreślam znaczenie dylematów natury etycznej i moralnej, które nierozerwalnie towarzyszą rozwojowi nowych technologii i ich zastosowaniu w służbie człowiekowi. Wśród wniosków pojawia się postulat włączenia rozwiązań z zakresu teleopieki i telemedycyny w nurt współczesnej polityki senioralnej.

    W artykule przedstawiono możliwość zastosowania analizy morfologicznej Zwicky’ego w projektowaniu ergonomicznym urządzeń wspomagających aktywność sportową osób z niepełnosprawnościami. Dla przykładu przenalizowano wózki biegowe do maratonów, które w większości cechuje bardzo podobna forma. Dla wybranych alternatyw w ramach atrybutów przeanalizowano ich zalety i wady, co w kontekście projektowania ergonomicznego umożliwia odrzucenie nieakceptowanych rozwiązań. W analizowanym przykładzie, jako atrybuty istotne uznano następujące kategorie: Liczbę kół (Ai), Pozycję na siedzisku (Bj), Kierunek ustawienia pasażera wózka (Ck), Uchwyt na część ciała (Dl), Skrętność kół (Ei), Przenoszenie siły poprzez określoną część ciała (Fm). Ostatecznie wykazano, że nawet przy niewielkim wysiłku dla szeregu rozwiązań funkcjonujących niezmiennie można znaleźć ciekawe alternatywy.
    The article presents the possibility of using Zwicky’s morphological analysis in the ergonomic design of devices supporting sports activity of people with disabilities. As an example, running trolleys for marathons were analyzed, which in most cases have a very similar form. The advantages and disadvantages of the selected attributes have been analyzed for the selected alternatives, which in the context of ergonomic design makes it possible to reject an unacceptable solutions. In the analyzed example, the following categories were considered to be relevant attributes: Number of wheels (Ai), Position on the seat (Bj), Direction of the passenger’s wheelchair position (Ck), Handle body part (Dl), Wheel steering (Ei), Power transmission through a specific part of the body (Fm). Finally, it was shown that even with a small effort for a number of solutions functioning invariably, interesting alternatives can be found.

    Zachodzące procesy starzenia się ludności indukują potrzebę aktywności naukowej w kierunku rozwiązywania problemów przez nie generowanych, w tym kwestii związanych z mieszkalnictwem. Wynika to z faktu, iż segment osób starszych jako potencjalnych odbiorców oferty mieszkaniowej, będzie odgrywał coraz istotniejszą rolę. Rozpatrując problemy związane z mieszkalnictwem dla seniorów, należy dostrzec, iż populacja ta jest silnie zróżnicowana wewnętrznie. Heterogeniczność ta implikuje konieczność pojawienia się szerokiej i zróżnicowanej oferty mieszkaniowej adresowanej do osób starszych. Niezależne mieszkania, dostosowane architektonicznie oraz wyposażone w technologie dedykowane seniorom stanowią jedną z możliwych form mieszkalnictwa senioralnego. Celem opracowania jest eksplikacja znaczenia gerontechnologii w ramach koncepcji srebrnej gospodarki. Temat ten wydaje się być szczególnie aktualny w obliczu problemu starości demograficznej, jak i tendencji demograficznych warunkujących obecny i przyszły kształt zasobów mieszkaniowych dla seniorów. Opracowanie stanowi studium przypadku – w pracy omówiono przykład wzorcowego mieszkania dla seniorów zlokalizowanego na warszawskich Bielanach, w którym zastosowano szereg rozwiązań z zakresu gerontechnologii
    The ongoing ageing of societies entails the need to intensify research aimed at solving problems of seniors. Housing is one of the most acute problems of the elderly. However, solving this issue is by no means an easy task as the population of seniors is highly heterogeneous. The great diversity means that the housing offer for this group should also be wide and comprehensive. Independent living forms, adjusted to the needs of the elderly, are among many potential dwelling options. The aim of this paper is to explain the meaning of gerontechnology as part of the silver economy concept. The issue is of special importance in the light of the ongoing demographic changes. The basic method applied is case study – the author presents the model example of an apartment for seniors in Warsaw, Poland, where many gerontechnological solutions have been applied.

    Older adults experience difficulties in their daily lives as their health deteriorates. Gerontechnology (the compilation of terms “gerontology” and “technology”) helps in the resolution of problems faced by older adults by improving their quality of life and, above all, developing tools to facilitate the access of older adults to all goods, services and infrastructure, which is also the understanding of the term used in this paper. The article mainly aimed to assess the selected gerontechnology that improved the quality of life of older adults in terms of different criteria, namely, innovation, demand, socioethics, usability, and functionality. It also analysed whether the respondent's age and gender had any influence on the assessment. Care robots were chosen from among the variety of gerontechnologies. The survey was conducted in the first quarter of 2018 and involved 643 people from different voivodships of Poland. Two types of questionnaires were designed. The electronic form of the survey was distributed using social media and snowball techniques, and the paper form was sent by traditional post to all nursing homes in Poland.

    W artykule sfinansowanym ze środków przeznaczonych na badania statutowe Instytutu Inżynierii Produkcji Politechniki Śląskiej przedstawiono tematykę wybranych współczesnych inżynierskich środków i sposobów poprawy jakości życia osób starszych. Skoncentrowano się na projektowaniu uniwersalnym, którego celem jest opracowanie systemu oraz jego otoczenia w taki sposób, aby był on dostępny dla wszystkich ludzi, w największym możliwym stopniu, bez potrzeby adaptacji bądź wyspecjalizowanego projektowania. W artykule opisano również filozofię Technology Assessment, która zakłada wykorzystanie danych o opiniach o eksploatacji środków technicznych, wyrażanych przez ich eksploatatorów (użytkowników/obsługujących) w zarządzaniu eksploatacją bądź w projektowaniu środków technicznych. Przedstawiono również podstawy gerontechnologii jako nauki o technologii i starzeniu się celem poprawy życia codziennego ludzi starych. Artykuł kończą wnioski, zawierające informację o perspektywach badań, które będą realizowane w przyszłości.
    In the article, funded for statutory research performed in Institute of Production Engineering of Silesian University of Technology the subject matter of the selected contemporary engineering means and ways of improvement of quality of old persons’ life was presented. The focus is on universal design, which aims to develop the system and its surroundings in such a way that it is accessible to all people, to the greatest possible extent, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. The article also describes Technology Assessment philosophy, which assumes the use of data on opinions about the exploitation of technical means, expressed by their exploiters (users/maintainers) in operation and maintenance management or design of technical means. It also presents the gerontology basics as the study of technology and aging to improve the old peoples’ everyday life. The end of the article are conclusions, which includes information on perspectives of research performed in the future.

    Wraz z postępującym procesem starzenia się populacji krajów najwyżej rozwiniętych oraz akceleracją procesu podwójnego starzenia się wzrastać będzie zapotrzebowanie na usługi opiekuńcze świadczone zarówno w miejscu zamieszkania osoby starszej, jak i w wyspecjalizowanych placówkach całodobowej opieki. Jednak przy wzroście zapotrzebowania maleć będzie jednocześnie potencjał opiekuńczy populacji, również w Polsce, do zapewnienia wystarczającej liczby opiekunów. Nadzieją na wypełnienie luki opiekuńczej stają się zatem nowoczesne technologie, w tym szczególnie telemedycyna i teleopieka. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie obecnie funkcjonujących rozwiązań w tym zakresie i wykorzystywanych w opiece technologii oraz wskazanie barier w rozwoju teleopieki i dylematów etycznych pojawiających się w związku z coraz szerszym wkraczaniem techniki w sferę opiekuńczą, czyli rozwojem gerontotechnologii.
    Along with the progressive aging of the populations of the most developed countries and the acceleration of the double aging process, the demand for care services provided both in the place of an elderly person’s residence as equally in specialized 24-hour care centers will increase. However, with the growth in demand, the potential of the caring population, including the Polish population, to ensure a sufficient number of carers able to meet growing needs will simultaneously decrease. Hence, modern technologies, especially telemedicine and telecare, become the hope for filling the ‘care’ gap. The aim of this article is to present the currently functioning solutions and technologies used in care and to identify the barriers to the development of telecare, as well as any ethical dilemmas arising in connection with the increasingly widespread implementation of technology into the care sector, i.e., the developmen t of gerontechnology.
