The essence of the presented article is the analysis of four textbooks for teaching the German language which looks into typical elements of German culture as well as cultural universals. The analysis of the following textbooks: Stufen 3, Moment Mal 2, Mittelpunkt B2 and Mittelpunkt C1 has indicated that older ones (more than 10 years older) devoted more attention to typical German culture phenomena and culturally conditioned Polish-German differences than the most recent textbooks where universal areas of reality have been accepted, e.g. travelling, professional life, means of payment, environmental protection. Moreover, new phenomena such as globalization, internationalization, cloning and genetically modified food were mentioned in the textbooks published in 2008.

This article presents Slavic loanwords in the Austrian variant of the German language. Its aim is twofold: it discusses words of Polish, Slovakian, Czech, Serbo-Croatian, and Slovenian origin in the Austrian variant of German, as well as stressing the multicultural history of Austria and its influence on vocabulary (a significant number of Slavic loanwords refer to culinary lexis denoting the names of Slavic meals). The analysis will not only deal with the meaning and etymology of particular words, but will also scrutinize their description in the “Duden” dictionaries: “Deutsches Universalwörterbuch” and “Duden. Wie sagt man in Österreich?”.

All language systems change over time, meaning that no language can be completely described without reference to the history of its development. The diachronic considerations are receiving considerable attention in modern linguistics due to a growing number of research projects dedicated to studying the language change. The historical approach is not only being increasingly used as an efficient way to explain the synchronic language phenomena, but is also one of the main goals of academic teaching programs. The aim of this article is to discuss the current situation in the field of German Historical Studies in Poland. Special attention will be focused on the challenges facing the Polish historical linguists, including the public debate regarding the general condition of the Humanities Sciences.

Since the eighties of the last century, the Institut für Deutsche Sprache (Institute forthe German Language) explored in various ways the attitudes of the German populationtowards the national language in Germany. Aft er limited studies without statisticalrelevance, two representative surveys were conducted in 1997/98 and 2008/09. Th equestions asked concerned attitudes toward recent developments of the language, the regionalvariance of German, despecially the East- and West-Geman variants, and towardsforeign languages inside and outside of the country. Th e major statitical results are presentedand discussed.

The article attempts to present the impact of the co-existence of the Slavic and Germanic world on the formation of Slavic loanwords in German. The study focuses chiefly on the Russian loanwords in German. It presents and describes cultural, historical, political, and economic reasons for the transfer of the lexical elements of Russian origin to German. The aforementioned factors include: the impact of the hanseatic trade, political alliances, and conflicts. The work refers to loanwords of Russian origin that entered German throughout the ages. The article provides examples of words that describe typical Russian phenomena (e.g. Tundra), which counterparts had not existed in German before.

Opis:
The present article surveys the main directions of the contemporary lexical-semantic typology and how the German language data can be applied to the existing classifications. The diachronic aspect concerns the typology of lexical change, namely universals and particulars of semantic change, lexical borrowing and word formation. The synchronic aspect has two different perspectives: one is onomasiological, directed at the determination of universal and specific models of lexicalization of concepts; the other is semasiological, which is expressed in the comparative analysis of the semantics and structure of the polysemy of corresponding lexemes.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the changing role and status of writing skills in the methodology of German language teaching, as well as to sketch the most recent trends which point to this issue. Allowing for the idea of autonomy of language teaching, which has been thoroughly discussed during debates concerning foreign language teaching in recent years, an attempt to select and highlight particular competence which should distinguish a student being able to develop writing skills in a foreign language in an autonomous way, has been undertaken in the article. Moreover, the most novel trends in methodology, which can be taken into account in the problem raised in the article, have been briefly presented.

The article is a discussion of a study by Rafał Pokrywka titled Współczesna powieść niemieckojęzyczna (Kraków 2018). The author of the study analysed selected works written at the turn of the 21st century, and – in an interesting manner – developed his discussion around a progression of three dimensions of time: the past, the present, and the future, which constitute the contexts for reading individual narratives. The interpretations of German, Austrian, and Swiss novels, both these which exist as Polish translations and these which have not yet been translated, are accompanied by cultural and sociological contexts, while the (re)definitions of the words used in the title of Pokrywka’s volume presented in the introduction enable one to place this original overview in the context of modern studies on the most recent literature.

The article presents research into borrowings from German to the Polish language. That research was initiated in the 19th century. German lexical borrowings were linked to other linguistic issues, such as morphology, syntax, phonology or semantic field theory. The most important researcher of German borrowings in Polish were Aleksander Bruckner, Leszek Moszyński, Ludwik Zabrocki, Wilhelm Kästner, Alicja Karszniewicz-Mazur etc. The article is a critical analysis of the most significant publications on this subject.

Review: Janusz Siatkowski, Studia nad słowiańsko‑niemieckimi kontaktami językowymi, Warszawa: Uniwersytet Warszawski 2015, 503 pp.The article reviews a volume in which Professor Janusz Siatkowski presents lexical and word-formation borrowings from Slavic languages to general German and to German dialects. The book considers the entire area of Slavic-German contact (Livonia, Eastern Prussia, Western Prussia, Pomerania, Silesia, Czechia, Moravia and Austria) as well as Lusatia and territories more distant from the centuries-old language border, namely Saxony, Thuringia, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg. Special attention is paid by the author to borrowings in the works by the Upper-Silesian German language writer Horst Bienek.The reviewed work distinguishes a number of language contact constellations: 1) borrowed lexical roots with borrowed derivational suffixes; with direct counterparts in Slavic languages; 2) borrowed lexical roots with borrowed derivational suffixes; without direct source words in Slavic languages; 3) Slavic derivational suffixes with roots of German etymology; with counterparts in Slavic languages; 4) Slavic derivational suffixes with roots of German etymology; without source words in Slavic languages.Janusz Siatkowski argues that, especially in bilingual territories, language contact was so strong that derivational suffixes could be productive in German dialects irrespective of lexical borrowings. The rich lexicological material is discussed on an excellent scholarly level, in accordance with all criteria of philology and current state of research. Janusza Siatkowskiego przedstawia zapożyczenia leksykalne i słowotwórcze z języków słowiańskich do języka niemieckiego oraz do gwar niemieckich. Książka uwzględnia całość historycznego areału kontaktów słowiańsko-niemieckich (Inflanty, Prusy Wschodnie, Prusy Zachodnie, Pomorze, Śląsk, Czechy, Morawy i Austria), a także Łużyce i tereny odległe od wielowiekowej granicy językowej, mianowicie Saksonię, Turyngię, Brandenburgię i Meklemburgię. Szczególną uwagę kieruje autor omawianego tomu na zapożyczenia w utworach górnośląskiego pisarza niemieckojęzycznego – Horsta Bienka.W pracy tej wyodrębniono szereg różnych konstelacji kontaktowych: 1) zapożyczone rdzenie leksykalne wraz z sufiksami derywacyjnymi, mające bezpośrednie odpowiedniki w językach słowiańskich; 2) zapożyczone rdzenie wraz z sufiksami derywacyjnymi, niemające bezpośrednich wzorów w językach słowiańskich; 3)słowiańskie sufiksy derywacyjne przy rdzeniach z etymologią niemiecką, mające odpowiedniki w językach słowiańskich; 4)słowiańskie sufiksy derywacyjne przy rdzeniach z etymologią niemiecką, niemające wzorów w językach słowiańskich.Janusz Siatkowski dowodzi, że zwłaszcza na terenach dwujęzycznych kontakty językowe były silne do tego stopnia, iż sufiksy derywacyjne mogły być produktywne w gwarach niemieckich niezależnie od zapożyczeń wyrazowych. Bogaty materiał leksykologiczny jest omówiony na wyśmienitym poziomie naukowym według wszystkich kryteriów filologicznych i na podstawie rozległego stanu badań. Książka może służyć jako kompendium zapożyczeń słowiańskich do gwar niemieckich.

The former German Language Island Markowa (Eastern Poland) was grounded in the 14th century. There is only one written testimony of its language preserved – the Court Book. In was written in 16th and 17th century by two writters. The second one was the local priest Thomas Kraus who was born in the neighbor village of Albigowa. The language of the Court book consists many characteristics of the Central German.
