Malaria is perceived as the world’s most devastating infectious disease, and is responsible for very high morbidity and mortality. A number of socioeconomic, environmental and behavioral factors affect the disease prevalence. Despite these factors, the impact of climate on probability of malaria transmission remains contentious.

    In this article, the author analyzes the terms for ‘woodpecker’ in the dialects of the Slavic languages, using the materials of the General Slavic Linguistic Atlas (OLA). The analysis contains two parts: the fi rst refers to the geographical distribution of the terms for ‘woodpecker’ in the Slavic-speaking area according to the stations covered by the OLA – about 850 settlements in the Slavic-speaking territory; the second part includes etymological and semantic analysis of the individual terms. From the analysis, it can be concluded that there is a great lexical diversity of these terms in the dialects of the Slavic languages, although the term dětьlъ is dominant in the Slavic-speaking area. Lexical diversity largely depended on the surrounding. Other factors, such as the contacts with other linguistic populations, infl uenced too. Recognizing the origin of the individual terms, we can establish that the forms are most often processed by onomatopoeia. But apart from the audacious perception, the motives for naming the woodpecker arose from the visual perception – the color of the feather, as well as the abilities characteristic of this kind of bird.

    The article aims to identify the shortcomings of the statistics describing the size and structure of passenger car parc in Poland, and to formulate the consequences of these limitations for geographical research. Analysed in detail, the shortcomings are divided into three groups: (1) ‘dead souls’, i.e. an overestimation of the number of vehicles which have not been on the road for a long time but remain on the register; (2) ‘cars with a grid’ (cars registered as trucks in which the cargo part is separated from passenger seats by a metal grid), i.e. an underestimation of the number of passenger cars and overestimation of the number of trucks related to the mass phenomenon of registering passenger cars as large goods vehicles (LGV-approved cars); and (3) company cars, i.e. an overestimation of the number of vehicles in cities where leasing companies and large enterprises owning those cars have their headquarters. The article determines the scale of car ownership overestimation in Poland and the areas where this overestimation is the highest, using districts (PL: powiaty) as basic spatial units. We conclude that the present motorisation statistics do not fully re flect the real geography of car ownership in Poland.

    The paper contains informations on the descriptions and analyse of various authors’ opinions as to the ocurrence and systematic position of species belonging to the genus Xylothrips. As the result of the analysis Calophagus has been downgraded to a subgenus of Xylothrips – Xylothrips (Calophagus) n. comb. – and Xylothrips geffroyi (n. syn.) synonymized with X. religiosus. At the end a key to the identification of all known species of Xylothrips is presented, together with a catalogue and maps showing the geographical distribution of particular species.

    Very large hail is known as a presence of a hailstone greater or equal to 5 cm in diameter. This phenomenon is rare but its significant consequences, not only to agriculture but also to automobiles, households and people outdoor makes it essential thing to examine. Hail appearance is strictly connected with storms frequency and its kind. The most hail-endangered kind of storm is supercell storm. Geographical distribution of hailstorms was compared with geographical distribution of storms in Poland. Similarities were found. The area of the largest number of storms is southeastern Poland. Analyzed European Severe Weather Database (ESWD) data showed that most of very large hail reports occurred in this part of Poland. The probable reason for this situation is the longest period of lasting tropical airmasses in southeastern Poland. Spatial distribution analysis shows also more hail incidents over Upper Silesia, Lesser Poland, Subcarpathia and Świętokrzyskie regions. The information source about hail occurrence was ESWD - open database, where everyone can add report and find reports which meet given search criteria. 69 hailstorms in the period of 2007 – 2015 were examined. They caused 121 very large hail reports. It was found that there is large disproportion in number of hailstorms and hail reports between individual years. Very large hail season in Poland begins in May and ends in September with cumulation in July. Most of hail occurs between 12:00 and 17:00 UTC, but there were some cases of very large (one extremely large) hail at night and early morning hours. However very large hail is a spectacular phenomenon, its local character determines potentially high information loss rate and it is the most significant problem in hail research.

    In this article we review the distribution and new data on the occurrence of Xylocopa valga Gerst. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Poland. This is also the first report of X. valga occurring in the Białowieża Forest, where it was captured visiting flowers of Lychnis flos-cuculi L. in a sandy grassland adjacent to the forest in the vicinity of Grudki, a small village near Białowieża. All 15 known records of this species in Poland are compiled into a detailed list and the location of each sighting is presented on the map. In two cases, the known distributional data have been corrected and were brought up to date. The first case is a forgotten record of the species (Popov 1947) that was reconstructed based on museum specimens collected in the 1870s at Karolath, Silesia (formerly Germany, currently Poland: locality now named Siedlisko) and this record was added to the list. However, the second case concerns a record from Tuchla near Jarosław (Banaszak 1989), which was excluded from the list, because it had been published as a result of misinterpretation of the label on the old museum specimens. Information on the species’ biology, especially on preferred habitats and nesting in dead wood, are also presented. X. valga is regarded as a saproxylic species occurring in forests, but its ability to inhabit the steppe zone is also discussed in this article. Furthermore, a list of flowering plants (95 species representing 30 families) visited by this bee species has been prepared based on data from the literature as well as our own observations. The new record of X. valga in the Białowieża Forest in combination with recent data from Western Europe suggests that this subpontic-mediterranean species is expanding its natural range probably due to climate change.     Opis:
    The occurrence of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) outside its natural distribution limits in the Baltic and Wielkopolsko−Pomorska Natual−Forest Regions depends mainly on anthropogenic factors and climatic conditions: annual precipitation sum and air temperature amplitudes. Dispersed stations in north−western and western Poland may indicate the expansion of its natural range possibly as a result of current climatic changes. The condition of mature stands and natural regeneration in the examined sites were good. For efficient silvicultural management of fir outside its natural range it is advisable to apply the cutting system with longer regeneration period and effectively protect the existing natural regeneration.

    Przedmiotem niniejszego tekstu jest prawo, zgodnie z którym „Każdy gatunek pojawił się współzależnie w czasie i przestrzeni z wcześniej istniejącym i blisko spokrewnionym gatunkiem”. Powyższe prawo łączy ze sobą i tłumaczy ogromną liczbę niezależnych i dotychczas niewyjaśnionych faktów. Naturalny system uporządkowania istot żywych, ich geograficzny rozkład i następstwo w warstwach geologicznych, zjawiska reprezentatywności i wymienności grup we wszystkich ich modyfikacjach, a także najbardziej niezwykłe cechy szczególne budowy anatomicznej są przez powyższe prawo wyjaśnione i zobrazowane. Prawo to, jak się wydaje, nie tylko nie stoi w sprzeczności z żadnym z wielu współcześnie znanych faktów, ale także jest z nimi całkowicie zgodne. Wykazuje ono także wyższość względem wcześniejszych hipotez, ponieważ nie tylko wyjaśnia istnienie czegoś, ale także tłumaczy, dlaczego to istnieć musi. W myśl tego prawa wiele najważniejszych zjawisk przyrodniczych musiało zajść, wynikają one z niego niemal z taką koniecznością jak eliptyczne orbity planet z prawa grawitacji.
    The theme of present paper is the law that „Every species has come into existence coincident both in time and space with a pre-existing closely allied species”. This law connects together and renders intelligible a vast number of independent and hitherto unexplained facts. The natural system of arrangement of organic beings, their geographical distribution, their geological sequence, the phenomena of representative and substituted groups in all their modifications, and the most singular peculiarities of anatomical structure, are all explained by it, in perfect accordance with the vast mass of facts which the researches of modern naturalists have brought together, and, it is believed, not materially opposed to any of them. It also claims a superiority over previous hypotheses, on the ground that it not merely explains, but necessitates what exists. Granted the law, and many of the most important facts in Nature could not have been otherwise, but are almost as necessary deductions from it, as are the elliptic orbits of the planets from the law of gravitation.

    The aim of this work was to expand current knowledge on the species composition and distribution of the jewel beetles (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in the Białowieża Primeval Forest (BPF) based on research conducted in the years 2000–2018 and a literature review. The BPF is considered the best-preserved forest of the European lowland and is a reference point for all forest research. Thus, knowledge of its fauna is vital. This research was conducted and incorporated the whole Polish part of the BPF, including Białowieża National Park (BNP), using standard methods for faunistic studies of terrestrial beetles. We also investigated potential microhabitats of saproxylic buprestid beetles and reared larvae from inhabited host material. Collected larvae and/or pupae were identified in the laboratory or grown to the adult stage. However, most specimens were collected using various traps (Lindgren, Moericke, barrier type Netocia and IBL-2), especially traps placed in the upper tree canopy. Two species previously unrecorded in the BPF (Agrilus graminis, A. mendax) and new information on several of the rarest Central European Buprestidae species (Buprestis splendens, Eurythyrea quercus, Anthaxia chevrieri, Chrysobothris chrysostigma, Agrilus antiquus croaticus, A. ater, A auricollis, A. convexicollis, A. pseudocyaneus) are presented here. Currently, 54 species of Buprestidae are known to occur the BPF area, of which 49 were collected from the Polish part and 26 were collected from the Belarusian part, whilst two species (Dicerca berolinensis and Eurythyrea austriaca ) have no specific location data. In the BNP, which covers about 17% of the Polish part of the BPF, up to 39 species of buprestid beetles have been found. We also provide an original key for differentiating Agrilus nicolanus – a species recently discovered in Poland (BPF and Biebrza Valley), that was previously known to occur only in Asia and the Lipetsk region in the European part of Russia – from Agrilus betuleti species group. In conclusion, the BPF is an important refugium of buprestid beetle richness including known forest relics.

    Opis:
    An integrated approach is proposed in the study of rational schemes for the distribution of cargo flows at a regional transport loop for multimodal transportation, considered within the framework of an oligopolistic market. A technique has been developed for the parallel application of two approaches, differing in their mathematical nature, to the issues of increasing the economic efficiency of these transportations. The results obtained by the previously developed method of economic and geographical delimitation of «influence areas» of loading stations serve as a justification for the correctness of the results obtained by using an algorithm based on the Pareto optimization of the freight transportation process. Rational variants for organizing the freight transportation, taking into account time and cost indicators, have been obtained. The system of analytical calculations is used as a software tool to obtain a mathematically sound and transport–logistic diversified model of a regional oligopolistic freight market.
