Opis:: The answer to the question whether teaching of geography nowadays respects the universal ideas of the great geographer, is not clear. A critical look at teaching achievements of Wacław Nałkowski, as well as at the contemporary state of geographical teaching, seems to be difficult due to the individual views and personal experiences. This paper is an attempt to assess the extent to which the important educational concepts of Nałkowski are respected in contemporary educational practice. The author particularly emphasizes the idea of geography as a synoptic field, which was to integrate the arts and the sciences, the „rationality” principle in geography, the views of Nałkowski concerning the use of maps, and the role and shape of geographical handbooks. In conclusion it was ascertained that the guiding principles of teaching geography, which were developed by Nałkowski and introduced by him to educational practice, today are mainly plain postulates. Although these principles did not lost their validity, what is confirmed by numerous authors, educational practice, form and content of geographical textbooks still deviate from Nałkowski’s recommendations. Also in geographical education at academic level many educational ideas of Nałkowski are not implemented.

Opis:: The expression „geographical course of history”, currently seen as old-fashioned or obsolete, seems to be typical in geographical works of Nałkowski. It combines two fields that were very close to him just from the very beginning of his scientific career: geography, to which he has devoted his whole life, and history, which was for him a source of information necessary to explain the diversity of landscapes. The origins of the concept can be found in works of German geographer, educator and philosopher Ernst Christian Kapp, which were poorly known in the Russian language area. Nałkowski had an opportunity to acknowledge Kapp’s instructions during his studies in Leipzig. The scholar wrote about three political-geographical circles of culture (germ. Political-geographische Kulturkreise), which also correspond with the stages in the development of civilization. For Nałkowski „the geographical course of history” is a specific point of view on history. Its essence is the movement of global (political and economic) center of civilization in three successive stages of social evolution. The first stage is connected with the great rivers of the ancient East, the second corresponds with the classical Greece and Rome (the Mediterranean), and the third is the period of dominance of the so-called West (the Atlantic stage). The Atlantic stage was to be replaced with the Pacific stage, before the advent of the global era. From the dawn of history until today the center of civilization shifted westward and this direction is the constant element of the concept. The article includes the results of empirical, geo-strategic and macroeconomic research, which confirm the validity of Nałkowski’s predictions. His concept became an inspiration not only to historians of civilization such as Feliks Koneczny and Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski, but also indirectly influenced the well-known theories of George Modelski, Peter Taylor and Samuel Huntington.

Opis:: The study shows the evolution of plans of teaching and curriculums of geography studies at the Pedagogical University of Cracow (former Wyższa Szkoła Pedagogiczna) in Cracow in 1946–2001. On the basis of literature and their own research, the authors distinguished some stages of changes introduced into geography-teachers training, taking into account formal and curricular aspects and professor Jan Flis’ contribution to the notion of geography-teachers’ training. The first chapter illustrates the changes that have taken place at the Cracow’s University in the last 65 years in the area of plans and curricula of geography teachers’ training courses. It constitutes a background for the idea Jan Flis had for teaching geographers and geography teachers, which is presented in the second chapter. The introduction of fieldwork into the curriculum of teacher training and the issue of the pedagogic content of the training were discussed in great detail. Additionally, the question that was strongly stressed was that of professional training for students that balances factual content (of geography as a science) with pedagogical content, geography didactics and practical education within internships served by students at schools. Finally, the third chapter relates to the developed theories of geography-teachers training in relation to the contemporary challenges we face. Taking into consideration training course for geography teachers, it is exceptionally justified to examine its conception in light of cultural, socio-economic and political changes that continuously occur.

Opis:: Celem publikacji jest odniesienie do koncepcji „T-shaped people” w obszarze nauczania projektowania systemów geoinformacyjnych. Idea „T-shaped people” rozpropagowana została przez Tima Browna, dyrektora firmy IDEO, jednej z najbardziej innowacyjnych firm Doliny Krzemowej. Podejście to z powodzeniem jest stosowane przez szereg światowej sławy firm, takich jak np. Apple, Intel czy Nike. Dobry projektant oprócz licznych kompetencji twardych powinien charakteryzować się szerokim wachlarzem umiejętności społecznych, które umożliwią mu odniesienie sukcesu w pracy zawodowej, a także zrealizowanie z powodzeniem najbardziej wymagających projektów IT. Autorki przedstawiają techniki służące rozwijaniu kompetencji miękkich wśród studentów, stosowane na przedmiotach Zastosowanie systemów informacji przestrzennej (Wydział Inżynierii Lądowej i Geodezji, WAT) oraz Inżynieria systemów informatycznych (Wydział Geodezji, Inżynierii Przestrzennej i Budownictwa, UWM w Olsztynie) oraz podsumowują doświadczenia z ostatnich dwóch lat realizacji zajęć.
The aim of the paper is the reference to the concept of “T-shaped people” in the area of geoinformation systems designing. “T-shaped people” paradigm has been popularized by Tim Brown, the Head of IDEA Company, one of the most innovative companies in Silicon Valley. This approach is used by many worldwide companies such as Apple, Intel or Nike. A good designer should not only have a wide range of hard skills, but also the soft ones, which help to successfully realize the most demanding projects. The authors present the techniques, which support development of students’ soft skills and are used in the course of Application of geographic information systems at the Military University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy and in the course of Systems engineering at the University of Warmia and Mazury, Faculty of Geodesy, Geospatial and Civil Engineering for the last two years of studies.
