    Представлена биография выдающегося военного востоковеда, генерал-майора Георгия Арандаренко (1846–1908), выдающегося ученого и государственного деятеля Российской империи второй половины XIX века. Приводятся данные о его древнем польском шляхетском происхождении от рода Яранда Брудзевского герба Помян, о его Запорожских предках, известными представителями которых были казацкие гетманы Тимофей Арандаренко и Тарас Трясило. Рассмотрены основные этапы его военно-административной службы, его научные, этнографические и статистическиеисследования Русского Туркестана. Приведены примеры его обширной благотворительной деятельности. Проанализированы его личные качества, вклад в завоевание и управление Туркестаном.
    The biography of an outstanding military orientalist, Major General GeorgyArandarenko (1846–1908), an outstanding scientist and statesman of the Russian Empire of the second half of the 19th century is presented. The data on his ancient Polish gentry origin from the Yaranda clan of the Brudze coat of arms of Pomyan, about his Zaporozhye ancestors, whose famous representatives were the Cossack hetmans Timofey Arandarenko and Taras Triasilo are given. The main stages of his military-administrative service, hisscientific, ethnographic and statistical studies of Russian Turkestan are strudied. Examples of his extensive charitable activities are given. His personal qualities, contribution to the conquest and administration of Turkestan are analyzed.

    Geographic information system (hereinafter GIS) enables space data to save, operate and analyse. Therefore it is primarily defined for branches that are based on dealing with spatially usable data (e.g. cartography, transport, public administration etc.). Nevertheless, GIS has its use in other branches as well – it can be applied in such cases when information of focused phenomenon is operated and when at the same time this phenomenon is connected with specific area (e.g. in archaeology, architecture, preservation of monuments etc.).

    The article aims to present the activities of Ludomir Sawicki (1884-1928), professor of Geography at the Jagiellonian University, with particular emphasis on his contribution to the organization of Polish science in this field. Ludomir Sawicki was born and raised in Vienna, but after graduating and defending his doctorate, he came to Krakow and started working as a junior high school teacher. Later - after obtaining his habilitation - he was a lecturer and professor at the Jagiellonian University, where he started organizing the Institute of Geography. He corresponded with Eugeniusz Romer regarding the publication of the Geographical and Statistical Atlas of Poland (Geograficzno-statystyczny atlas Polski). He actively participated in the works of many significant Polish organizations, including the collaboration with the Polish Country Lovers’ Society (PTK) in Warsaw, and was one of the founders of the Polish Geographical Society. He participated in geographic congresses in Geneva (1908), London (1911), Rome (1913) and Cairo (1925), and he organized the Second Congress of Slavic Geographers and Ethnographers, which took place in Krakow in 1927. He was also involved in expeditionary endeavors. He founded the Orbis printing house in Krakow, which published not only recognized works in the field of geography but also teaching aids for schools. His extensive activity infl uenced generations of students, including Wiktor Ormicki and Antoni Wrzosek.

    Opis:
    In this article, we present how, using the example of research studies connected with the perception of a landscape, some structured methods of data production used primarily in cognitive anthropology can be applied along with the possibilities of data analysis visualization using geographic information systems. We show the process of working with data gained by qualitative techniques and transferred, using semantic domain analysis, to the GIS interface, and outline the room for interpretation opened up by such a multilevel approach using various tools. Although we subjected the described procedures to pilot verification in our own research, the connection of the presented methodological approaches is still open to scientific discussion and, above all, to further experimentation.
    W artykule prezentujemy zastosowanie niektórych strukturyzowanych metod wytwarzania danych, używanych przede wszystkim w antropologii kognitywnej, równolegle z metodami wizualizacji danych za pomocą systemów informacji geograficznej (GIS) na przykładzie badań związanych z percepcją krajobrazu. Omawiamy proces opracowywania danych uzyskanych techniką jakościową i przeniesionych za pomocą analizy domen semantycznych do interfejsu GIS oraz definiujemy możliwości interpretacyjne, jakich dostarcza zastosowanie tak wielopoziomowego podejścia i zróżnicowanych narzędzi. Opisane w artykule procedury zostały wstępnie zweryfikowane w badaniach własnych, lecz powiązania między opisywanymi w artykule podejściami metodologicznymi powinny stanowić przedmiot dalszej dyskusji naukowej, a przede wszystkim weryfikacji doświadczalnej.

    W pracy przedstawiono analizę cytowań artykułów opublikowanych w 24 tomach rocznika „Problemy Klimatologii Polarnej” w latach 1992-2014 opracowaną na podstawie bazy Web of Science i serwisu naukowo-informacyjnego Google Scholar. Przeprowadzono również kwerendę takich cytowań w polskich publikacjach zwartych z zakresu geografii fizycznej, ekologii i biologii. Analizy ujawniły dużą liczbę cytowań w czasopismach z tzw. Listy Filadelfijskiej (164) i bardzo dużą liczbę cytowań w czasopismach i wydawnictwach polskich.
    The paper presents an analysis of citations of articles published in the yearbook ‘Problems of Polar Climatology’ for the period 1992-2014 developed on the basis of Web of Science and Google Scholar scientific- information service. A query of such citations in Polish shorted publications was also carried out in the field of physical geography, ecology and biology. The Journal is indexed by "Cold Regions Bibliography" and Polish "BazTech". 272 articles by 104 authors were published in 24 volumes of ‘Problems of Polar Climatology’. Research problems of vast majority of works related to the Arctic, including, in particular, Svalbard (133 articles), which was the focus of Polish scientists’ research activities. Issues relating to the Antarctic were discussed in 66 articles and focused mainly on the characteristics of different climatic elements and weather processes in the area of Arctowski Station in the South Shetland Islands. The analysis revealed a large number of citations (164) in journals indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded (Table 1) and a very large number of citations in Polish journals (705) and publications (441) – Table 4. Taking into account very large number of citations, thematically narrow profile of journals and a relatively small group of authors dealing with issues of polar meteorology and climatology in Poland, it can be concluded that this magazine plays an important role in spreading research achievements in this field.

    The ethnographic atlases hitherto published in Europe have been created to meet the needs of particular countries and nations rather than with any prospect of comparative studies in mind. Thereby, it is difficult to find maps which are comparable when it comes to systematics and chronology. Therefore, we believe it necessary to interpret anew source materials deposited in Cieszyn workshop of the Polish Ethnographic Archives – to deepen the systematics of mapped phenomena along with their chronology and earmark for future development and studies topicsthat appear in other European atlases. The resultant maps are to compose an innovative edition, tentatively entitled The Atlas of Cultural Heritage of the Polish Village. The present article familiarizes readers with the concept of the planned endeavour, including aims, preliminary assumptions of the project, and the methodology of research.
