    The article contains an interpretation of images of the Biała river in the Podlasie literature of the twentieth and twenty-first century in the context of imaginative geography and various forms of memory defined by Aleida Assmann. The analysis is based on texts written by Poles, Jews, and Belarusians living in Białystok. The article also shows the “politics of site” pursued by the city government in relation to the Biała river.

    Opis:
    The subject of this article is the problem of the imagined geography of the nineteenth century Europe in the Polish writing under the partitions in the period between uprisings. A distinction on the Europe of places and the Europe of spaces is the basic proposition of this paper.The Polish authors focused on the specific places – towns, monuments, museum, souvenirs and nature strangeness when they described the Western. They imagined this part of Europe as the collection of places. The spaces were only the complement of this image. The Eastern and North parts of Europe were described differently. The authors rarer referred to particular places. While writing about Volyn, Podolia or Ukraine the Polish authors depicted rampant and vast steppes. Similarly, they depicted the forest landscapes while they writing about Polesia and Lithuania. They perceived the extreme North as rocky and glacial spaces.

    Whereas Wincenty Pol’s topographical verse has usually been viewed as an expression of a ‘sentimental geography’, this article proposes a new reading of a well-known poem A Song about Our Land by Wincenty Pol in terms of ‘imagined geography’, a key term of an approach inspired by geopoetics and postcolonial studies. ‘Imagined geography’ refers to a poetic map, i.e. travelogue laced with motifs from the repository of national heritage. Its images, reshaped by the writer’s imagination, form an ideologically charged whole in which an emotive sense of place or scenery (‘touching the heart’) uncovers a complex cultural stratigraphy of the ‘imagined geography’. In the light of this approach, based on the insights of geopoetics, Wincenty Pol’s poem can be treated as textual representation of a map of the real and the symbolic territory of Poland.

    Tematem artykułu jest opis geograficzno-politycznego dyskursu wpisanego w międzywojenną krajoznawczą serię wydawniczą „Cuda Polski”. Zawarte w poszczególnych tomach opisy regionów przedwojennej Rzeczypospolitej zostały poddane przez autorów zabiegom symbolicznej polonizacji, sprowadzającej narodowościowe zróżnicowanie polskiego państwa do wymiaru etnograficznej barwności. Ujawnieniu tych ideologicznych mechanizmów posłużyły w artykule odwołania do badawczych założeń geografii wyobrażonej, polityki miejsca i polityki pamięci.
    The subject of the article is a description of the geographical-political discourse entered in the interwar tourist series “The Wonders of Poland”. The descriptions of regions of the prewar Republic of Poland included in the individual volumes were subjected by the authors to the symbolic polonization, which reduced the national diversity of the Polish state to the ethnographic patchwork dimension. The disclosure of these ideological mechanisms was enabled in this article by references to the research assumptions of imaginative geography, politics of place and politics of memory.
