Opis:
Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide. DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) are the most dangerous lesions which can lead to carcinogenesis. Nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) is an important pathway, that allows for recovering DNA by direct end joining. The XRCC6 and LIG4 genes encode respectively Ku70 protein and human ATP-dependent DNA ligase, which are the components of the NHEJ repair pathway. The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of XRCC6 C1310G and LIG4 T9I genes polymorphisms on colorectal cancer risk among Polish population. Materials and method: Genotyping was performed using TaqMan probes based on analysis of PCR products amplified in Real Time PCR. The research has been carried out on the material obtained from 100 patients with colorectal cancer and 100 cancer-free individuals who were age and sex-matched as a control group. The results were developed using the chi – squer test and odds ratio (OR). Results: Odd ratio analysis indicates reduced risk of colorectal cancer for LIG4 T9I polymorphism in heterozygotus model C/T (OR= 0.2717 95% CI= 0.1247-0,5918) and homozygous model T/T (OR= 0.3593 95% CI= 0.1394-0.9266). Similar situation we observed for XRCC6 C1310G gene polymorphism, which indicated on heterozygotus variant C/G (OR= 0.1181 95% CI= 0.0145-0.964) and homozygotus variant G/G (OR= 0.0972 95% CI= 0.0097-0.9713) to decrease the risk of colorectal cancer. Conslusions: Our research revealed XRCC6 C1310G and LIG4 T9I polymorphisms are associated with diminished risk of colorectal cancer. However, to confirm obtained results, a further investigations should be carried out.

Conservation of bamboos for future exploitation as fuel, fibre and as an ingredient for cosmetics depends on knowledge of its natural genetic variation. The study of molecular genetic diversity in bamboos will provide important information for its conservation. This article reports on the genetic diversity in 25 species representing five genera of bamboos found in Indonesia using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers. Out of 40 primers, 24 primers produced 1107 total bands and 86.21% of polymorphic bands across the 25 species. Sixteen bands were uniquely found in one species only and their presence or absence helped to define nine bamboo species. RAPD band sizes ranged from 162 to 2247 base pairs. A dendrogram based on the similarity coefficient of Dice divided the bamboo species into three big clusters. In conclusion, RAPD can capture the diversity among five different bamboo genera and has a great potential to be used in the study of genetic diversity in Indonesian bamboos.

Opis:
Due to its complex and microscopic nature, genetics is a difficult subject for many learners to conceptually grasp. Graphics, animation and video material can be extremely helpful to their understanding. A wealth of educational online content about genetics has been created over the past decade in the wake of the human genome being sequenced. However, these digital resources are distributed across disparate sites and it requires a high level of content and pedagogical knowledge to orchestrate the progression and choice of material available to the learner, as well as technical expertise to bundle the resources in a meaningful and accessible format. A contextualised learning sequence, called ‘Gene Medicine’, has been designed in LAMS by the author, a student teacher who has a doctorate in human genetics, and who has undertaken a career change to teach science to secondary students. This paper reflects an ongoing professional learning experience as the author integrates her high-content expertise and developing pedagogical knowledge within the LAMS digital environment.

Opis:
Nutrition is a factor of major importance for health and also for development of diet related disorders. Nowadays there is no doubts that interaction between genes and nutrition plays a key role in health risk prediction and disease prevention. Individual nutritional status is determined not only by food availability but also by genes that control food intake, nutrient absorption and metabolism. On the other hand nutrients can significantly influence different genes expression and metabolic processes. Knowledge of genetic susceptibility to disease will help identify people at enhance risk and their response to diet. The prevalence of the types of genes of interest may differ between populations. The same genotype does not confer the same risk in all populations because of differences in environmental factors and nutritional habits. Therefore, populations should not simply copy each other’s dietary recommendations. Based on genetic and nutritional studies the best way for expression of healthier phenotypes should be found and used to promote health and prevent different diseases development.

This paper is a review of recent publications dealing with the consequences of the release of genetically modified (GM) crops into the environment. The summary of arguments and for and against is an attempt to summarize the debate in the media. This highly publicized issue, although only one aspect of the conflict between the biotech lobby, environmentalists and consumers. The controversy arises from the fact that neither the benefits nor the risks of GM crops are clearly defined. The study contains a summary of claims that there is a serious potential risk to the environment of positive cultivation of GM crops, with uncertain effects, and that basic manipulation of heredity could have tragic consequences. European scepticism about GM crops increases from year to year. This paper coincides with the Polish government’s introduction of a ban on the cultivation of genetically modified maize and potatoes on Polish territory. In conclusion, while a move away from GM crops is likely, the author argues that ultimately there is no turning back.

Lysenkoism was a political campaign against genetics and science-based agriculture conducted by Trofim Lysenko, his followers and Soviet authorities. Many books on this theme were forbidden in Russia and published abroad. Novel The White Robes by Dudintsev is a fictionalized version of the devastation, which Lysenko wreaked on Soviet genetic study. Novels Nikolai Nikolaevich by Aleshkovsky and The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin by Voinovich describe the topic in  a satirical style. The actuality of the theme is confirmed by its presence in Russian mass media in the form of materials aimed at justifying Lysenko's activity in the recent years.

Modern forest selection programs concern natural and protected populations of trees characterized by a great genetic variability and also production stands frequently deformed by human activity. In the latter, artificial regeneration is prevailing. Forest nurseries working in the organizational structures of State Forests can guarantee the proper provenance (genotype)of seeds and the quality of seedlings obtained from them. The condition, however, is a close uniformity in the conservation of forest gene resources, and selection breeding of forest trees. The success of the program depends also on the development of modern infrastructure for forest nurseries and applied technologies. The latter task was the field of activity of Professor Bolesław Suszka, Ph.D., and his many-year research and organizational and didactic activity in Poland and abroad. The methods in long-term storage and their pretreatment in case of dormant seeds, developed by Professor Suszka, created the theoretical and practical basis for the conservation of forest gene resources not only in Poland.

Sport genomics is a comparatively new scientific discipline concentrating on the organization and functioning of the genome of elite athletes. It seems to be the most promising tool for sport selection, individualization of the training process, sport traumatology, and also in illegal ‘gene doping’. With genotyping more available, research of gene variants’ influence on several phenotype traits related to physical performance have been widely carried out worldwide. This review not only summarizes the current findings of sport genomics study of molecular markers, their association with athlete status and training responses, but it also explores future trends and possibilities. The importance of genetics in modern sport increases every year. However, the recent studies still represent only the first steps towards a better understanding of the genetic factors that influence human physical abilities, and therefore continuing studies are necessary.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to highlight the achievements of human behavioural genetics. It begins with a brief overview of the field of contemporary human behaviour genetics. Then, the general principles of behavioural genetics, research methods used, the concept of heritability and areas of rapid advancement in the field are identified. While classical twin studies have been a powerful tool to find heritability or the genetic correlation between different human behaviours, new tools are now available to help identify the genes responsible for individual differences. In particular, association studies and DNA methylation studies are crucial to advancing knowledge on the genetic basis of human behaviour as well as on the epigenetic factors that mediate genetic and environmental effects on behaviour. Several results on the heritability of human behaviour, relationships between genetic polymorphisms and behaviour as well as the consequences of DNA methylation are reported in this article.
