In today’s organizations, the degree of generational diversity increases among employees, moreover the age difference between employees will further increase due to legal changes in the field of pension rights. The issue of age management becomes more crucial and it is important to see it as a comprehensive issue not only in the particular age group. Discrimination based on age is a common problem in the organization. In the media and among public opinion exist stereotypes about certain generations on the labor market, which can lead to unfair generalizations. Not only the elderly, but also young people are becoming a minority in organizations. The key to understand the reasons for potential conflicts is to focus on a greater role of perceived generational differences rather than the actual.

Celem artykułu jest systematyzacja wiedzy na temat inteligencji generacyjnej i jej roli w zarządzaniu, a także diagnoza inteligencji generacyjnej polskich menedżerów. Wykorzystano metodę krytycznej analizy literatury i autorski kwestionariusz do badania inteligencji generacyjnej. Badania przeprowadzone na próbie 200 przedstawicieli kadry kierowniczej wysokiego i średniego szczebla wskazują, że poziom ich inteligencji generacyjnej jest wyższy niż przeciętny przy istotnym zróżnicowaniu wyników w poszczególnych podskalach. Badani uzyskują wysokie wyniki w podskalach: „świadomość odmienności pokoleniowej i jej akceptacja” oraz „współdziałanie i dzielenie się wiedzą”. Jednocześnie mają problemy we współpracy z osobami z młodszej od nich grupy wiekowej. Przejawia się to w postaci relatywnie niższej gotowości do korzystania z wiedzy tej grupy pracowników, niskiego rozumienia używanego przez nich słownictwa, w słabszym rozumieniu punktu widzenia oraz postaw młodszych współpracowników. Obraz ten uzupełniają negatywne emocje, odczuwane przez menedżerów w sytuacji, w której osoby od nich młodsze potrafią wykonać coś lepiej od nich.
The aim of the article is the systematization of knowledge on the topic of generational intelligence and its role in management and the diagnosis of generational intelligence of Polish managers. Methods of critical analysis of literature and author's questionnaire were used for examining generational intelligence. Research conducted on a sample of 200 representatives of managerial personnel on high and medium positions indicates that their level of generational intelligence is higher than the average, with variations in certain subscales. Research subjects scored high in the following scales: ,,awareness of generational differences and acceptance of such” and ,,cooperation and sharing of knowledge”. Simultaneously they have problems in cooperation with people from the generation younger than theirs. It is revealed in relatively low capability of using the knowledge of this group of employees, low understanding of vocabulary used by young workers and low willingness to understand their point of view and organisational attitudes. This image is complemented by negative emotions appearing in managers in situations when younger people can do something better than them.

Thirty years after the onset of democratisation in Central and Eastern Europe, the first generations of post-communist societies have been raised, educated and become professionally active. Objectively, they are a specific group of people whose primary and secondary socialisation occurred during a period that differed profoundly from that of their parents and older acquaintances. The article presents the results of a qualitative study conducted among Polish and Ukrainian students to diagnose their subjective generational self-identifications. The aim of the study was to determine whether and how young people in both countries perceive themselves and their social environment, and whether they identify themselves in terms of a unique generation.

The main aim of this paper is to juxtapose the normative aspect of intergenerational solidarity with specific care practices against the backdrop of Poland’s public debate on social expectations, costs and changes needed in the system of pensions and social benefits offered to elderly citizens (the systemic context of intergenerational solidarity). The paper presents grandparents’ practices in offering care to their grandchildren and children’s practices in supporting their elderly parents. Such practices originate not as much from the emotional aspect of intergenerational solidarity as from culture-defined expectations of specific age categories, reinforced by unavailability of public care institutions. The analysis, based on qualitative and quantitative data, finds that intergenerational solidarity in Poland is a source of multiple tensions (including gender-related ones).

The article analyzes changes over time (temporal variation) in the name of three old farming habits: pierzak, dożynki and szczeblik. The author analyzed the materials obtained today in terms of generational diversity and compared them with archival data – Adam Tomaszewski and Atlas of the language and folk culture of Greater Poland. The analyzes showed that the generational differentiation is insignificant among the surveyed informants, while the chronological changes of the surveyed names show a varying degree of transformation.

There is now a wealth of research that explores the relationship between identity and foreign language teaching. This paper, by analysing stories delivered by teachers of varied professional experience, is intended to show that teacher identity can be viewed not just in relation to the cognitive dimension of the self, but rather with respect to the professional discourses prevailing in a particular historical period. Conceiving identity in this way requires a focus on the professional aspects of teaching theories and practices, along with issues of individual identity development situated in socio-political contexts and identifications with communities of practice. The paper centers on the contextually embedded factors that are liable to change with the social, cultural and historical discourses of practice.

W konsekwencji stałego przyspieszenia procesu cywilizacyjnych zmian, w znacznym stopniu generowanego dynamicznym rozwojem technologii informatycznych, w ostatnich latach doszło do istotnych przemian niemal wszystkich otaczających nas i współtworzonych przez nas przestrzeni świata życia codziennego. W efekcie powyższych tworzą się, nieistniejące wcześniej, nowe płaszczyzny pokoleniowych relacji – subświaty teraźniejszej przeszłości i teraźniejszej przyszłości, oraz nowe linie podziałów, skutkujące nowymi sposobami realizacji roli przedstawiciela własnego pokolenia. W subświecie pokoleń obserwujemy coraz wyraźniej zarysowujące się modyfikacje cech charakteryzujących tożsamość społeczną pokoleń oraz zmiany w procesie dyferencjacji pokoleń. Prezentowany tekst stanowi próbę wstępnej diagnozy zasygnalizowanych powyżej zmian.
In recent years, significant changes in almost all areas of everyday life have occurred due to the constant acceleration of civilizational progress, mainly caused by the dynamic development of information technologies. As a result of these changes, new territories of generational relations (sub-worlds of the present-past and the present-future) and new dividing lines are being created. Contemporary people play the role of being members of their own generation differently. In the sub-world of generations, we observe more and more clearly visible modifications of the features characterizing generations' social identity and changes in the process of generational differentiation. The presented text is an attempt at a preliminary diagnosis of the changes mentioned above.

The generational situation of contemporary Polish youth is quite special and is the result of changes both on the macro scale, which include the dominance of the culture of consumer capitalism, the rapid progress of civilisation (mainly the development of communication technologies), globalisation, accession to the EU and on the micro scale – unique, and intense changes in patterns of socialisation. The generational situation of young Poles (born 1990-1997), presumably representing the first cohorts of a new generational group, has three prime components: 1) a societal break with historic roots; 2) the continual, intensive, multi-source, but until now rare, impact of external stimuli; and3) the fact that they live in a world with a variety of addictions and become dependent on them. In my opinion we should in the future observe carefully all the features discussed in this article, because for the first time in many years we have seen clear signs of a completely new quality in the sense of identity of the young generation, not only in their regional incarnations, but also on a global scale.
Pokoleniowa sytuacja współczesnej polskiej młodzieży jest dość szczególna i stanowi efekt zarówno przemian w skali makro, do których wypada zaliczyć dominację kultury konsumpcyjnego kapitalizmu, szybki skok cywilizacyjny (głównie rozwój technologii komunikacyjnych), globalizację, akcesję do UE, jak i mikro – dotychczas niewystępujące w podobnej skali zmiany wzorów socjalizacyjnych. Na pokoleniową sytuację interesujących nas dzisiaj młodych Polaków (roczniki 1990-1997), przypuszczalnie stanowiących pierwsze kohorty nowej grupy pokoleniowej, składają się przede wszystkim trzy elementy: 1) socjalizacyjne „wykorzenienie z historii”; 2) nieustanne poddawanie niespotykanemu dotychczas, intensywnemu, wieloźródłowemu wpływowi bodźców zewnętrznych oraz 3) fakt, że żyje w świecie zróżnicowanych form uzależnień i ulega im. Warto będzie się wskazanym cechom w najbliższych latach uważnie przyglądać, gdyż odnoszę wrażenie, że pierwszy raz od wielu lat obserwujemy wyraźne znamiona zupełnie nowej jakości młodzieżowej pokoleniowości, i to nie tylko w swoich regionalnych wcieleniach, lecz również w wymiarze globalnym.

The paper is an attempt to analyse the influence of generational differences on social relations and psycho-social atmosphere in the contemporary work environment. The starting point of this analysis is the category of Echo-Boomers, which is how the generation of Millennials (also named Generation Y) is called due to certain qualities that make them similar to Baby Boomers, who were born in the twenty years after World War II. The subject of this analysis are some overlapping areas of both generations regarding value systems, attitudes, as well as cultural practices related to professional activity and balance between work and the private sphere. The purpose of this analysis is to verify the hypothesis that there is a significant similarity between both generations, a generational resonance.

W artykule omówiona została tematyka rodzinnych relacji międzygeneracyjnych na odległość z perspektywy zamieszkujących województwo śląskie rodziców emigrantów. Podstawą empiryczną tekstu są przeprowadzone w 2015 roku badania ankietowe na próbie 300 osób. Zrelacjonowane zostało nastawienie badanych do emigracji własnych dzieci oraz ocena jej wpływu na więzi rodzinne i zaangażowanie w sprawy gospodarstwa domowego. Przedstawione zostały wyniki badań dotyczące częstotliwości kontaktów między rodzicami a dziećmi – zarówno bezpośrednich, jak również odbywających się za pośrednictwem cyfrowych narzędzi komunikacji. Istotną częścią rozpatrywanej problematyki jest także antycypacja własnej przyszłości przez badanych rodziców – w tekście podjęto próbę identyfikacji potencjalnych obaw związanych z własną starością respondentów, łączących się z funkcjonowaniem w ramach transnarodowej rodziny.
The article discusses issues concerning long-distance cross-generational relations within families from the perspective of emigrants’ parents who live in the Silesian Voivodship. The empirical basis is a survey conducted in 2015 on a sample of 300 people. It reports the attitudes of the respondents to their children’s migration and the estimates of migration’s impact on family ties as well as on the commitment to livelihoods issues. The article focuses on the findings related to the frequency of contacts between parents and children, both direct and through digital tools. An important part of the considered issue is the parents’ anticipation of their own future. The article attempts to identify the parents’ potential concerns regarding their functioning within the transnational family framework in the context of their senility.

The aim of this study is to present the Faculty of Law Enforcement of the National University of Public Service and the admission process awaiting the members of generation Z – and within it, those who wish to apply for officer cadet status – as well as the drop-out rates and their causes following successful admission, and also the prerequisite base competences expected within the framework of public service and in law enforcement. The young applicants admitted to the Faculty of Law Enforcement are supposed to represent a significant proportion of the future reinforcement of the professional service personnel, thus the member of generation Z not only stand at the gates of higher education but at the gates of the law enforcement labour market, too. Through our study, we would like to highlight the correlations emerging between the competence-based expectations of the law enforcement organs from the young career starters and the university admission process as well as the individual wishes of the applicants, and the level of contrast or synergy of the physical and intellectual status of the students in this matter. From this perspective, the question may arise whether it is necessary to implement any changes in the set of conditions, expectations or attitudes regarding the higher educational training or in the starting phase of the law enforcement career path.

The main purpose of this essay is to determine whether organized voluntary activity is always equated with social capital by evaluating the results of the research work entitled “YoungAdults, the Family and Pro-social Behavior: A Study of the Organized Volunteer.” The author also reflects on whether or not the young adults who voluntarily do such work are good fellows outside of that context (for example in their family life) and outside of the narrow sphere of their professional commitments (for example in society at large). For this reason, the author’s analysis is not confined to the voluntary activities of the young people but seeks to explore other dimensions of the issue. For the author, the research objectives of this paper can be achieved only by examining the familial, friendly and romantic relationships of the young people, along with their values and moral viewpoints.

Poles in the Republic of Lithuania are the best organized Polish minority abroad. They are represented at various levels of government, in the media, organizations, and there is an extensive system of education in their mother tongue. The cultural sphere is an important area of their activity. It is mainly focused on folklore. At the same time, there has appeared a number of youth groups performing various styles of music and functioning on the Lithuanian music market, which is, however, marginally covered in the press. Their work does not principally refer to the problems of the life of the Polish community, and it sometimes expresses critical content. However, these performers introduce the Polish language to a wide cultural circulation and strive for a slightly different shape of relations with the Lithuanian majority than the older generations perceive it. They also contribute to the integration of youth communities. Undoubtedly, the generational rebellion, which was often noticeable in the activities of the Polish musicians of young generation, was a response to the challenges of adulthood and, at the same time, constituted a form of patriotism.

Values define the directions of human activities and are related to people’s motivation to undertake specific activities and roles (Schwartz, 1994; Brown, 2002). Researchers and employers observe differences in motivation to work among representatives of different generations and genders (Twenge, Campbell, & Freeman, 2012; Gursoy & Karadag, 2013). In this research project, the authors asked what motivated contemporary employees, whether the intensity of their motives was different in different generations, what relationships there were between the dominant work motives and employees’ dominant values, and whether there were differences between women and men regarding work motives. To verify the hypotheses, they conducted a study with a sample of 307 professionally active people. They used their own Types of Work Motives Questionnaire designed for the purposes of the study and the Valued Living Questionnaire (VLQ; Wilson & Murrell, 2004). The obtained results indicate that younger employees choose the kind of work that gives them comfort and adequate pay. Regardless of age, however, social security support is the most important for all groups of respondents. For women, security and social security support are important at work. Moreover, the study has shown that there is a relationship between work values and work motives. For example people who appreciate values such as friendship and stability are motivated to work by good relationships and security, those who value recreation and stability are motivated by comfort and salary, those for whom respect and education are crucial are motivated by the possibility of development etc.
