    Rok 1920 (1920) is the most extensive text by Józef Piłsudski. The image of the author inferred from the linguistic features of the text is one of a typical user of general Polish in the interwar period, that is a representative of the Polish intelligentsia of those days. The idiolectal and regional characteristics are infrequent or occasional (in the phonetic, grammatical, and lexical layers). The stylistics of the treaty is primarily the stylistics of a realistic description and the author’s narrative, used effi ciently and displaying a great narrative talent and the knowledge of realities.

    The term literary language has many meanings nowadays. Beginning from the 70’s and the 80’s it’s been substituted with terms such as general language, general Polish language, nationwide language in consequence of transitions that underwent during the II World War and in the period directly it ensuing. The literary language term was fixed in linguistic studies codified language. In this meaning, in a diachronic approach, it has functional substantiation.

    Walka rewolucyjna w zaborze rosyjskim. Fakty i wrażenia z ostatnich lat dziesięciu (Revolutionary fi ght under the Russian rule. Facts and impressions over the last ten years) is a memorial feature article by Józef Piłsudski presenting the preparation, print, and distribution of the Polish Socialist Party’s underground pamphlets that were illegal under the Russian rule. The text is written in standard general Polish of the turn of the 20th century with a minor share of north borderland regionalisms, idiolectisms, and historisms. The style of the work combines “facts and impressions”, that is a realistic narration with a fictionalised description of various events related to the distribution of underground publications. The author of the feature article presents himself to the reader as an educated person using a language characterised by familiarity with the journalistic style.

    Opis:
    The article discusses the functions of a local dialect in texts understood as written or spoken linguistic utterances which are written again and which fulfil a specific cultural pattern – an all-Polish pattern or a folk pattern. Following the conclusions of M. Rak, I assume that texts written in local dialects represent three functional styles: the colloquial, artistic and literary style. In each of those styles the local dialect performs a slightly different function. A local dialect is usually introduced into texts written in general Polish with a particular purpose, and it is always related to valuing the local dialect. In all types of texts the local dialect performs both intentional functions (those related to giving information and other purposes) and unintentional functions which are strictly correlated with the awareness (or its lack) of introducing the local dialect into the text.
    Artykuł omawia funkcje gwary w tekstach rozumianych jako wypowiedzi językowe pisane lub mówione i potem wtórnie zapisane realizujące określony wzorzec kulturowy – ogólnopolski albo ludowy. Za Maciejem Rakiem przyjmuję, że teksty zapisane gwarą reprezentują trzy style funkcjonalne: potoczny, artystyczny i literacki. W każdym z nich gwara pełni nieco inną funkcję. Do tekstów pisanych językiem ogólnopolskim gwara zazwyczaj wprowadzana jest w określonym celu i zawsze wiąże się to z jej wartościowaniem. We wszystkich typach tekstów gwara pełni zarówno funkcje zamierzone (informacyjne i pozainformacyjne), jak i niezamierzone i pozostają one w ścisłej korelacji ze świadomością (lub jej brakiem) wprowadzania gwary do tekstu.

    The majority of studies on the Polish language didactics have so far focused on the subject of teaching Polish as a foreign language. The number of papers addressing the issue of teaching Polish as a second or inherited language is relatively modest. This paper aims at reviewing current terminology adopted in all the three fields of the Polish language teaching. The analyses performed involve the evolution of the Polish language didactics considered as a sub-discipline of the contemporary language didactics. Specification of scope of each of the [66] Przemysław E. Gębal teaching fields should contribute to further development of the Polish studies thought on language didactics.

    The aim of this paper is to discuss the major differences and similarities between the Corpus of Polish Sign Language (KPJM), which has been developed for a decade by the team of the Section for Sign Linguistics, Faculty of Polish Studies, University of Warsaw, and corpora of phonic languages (and in particular the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP)). The KPJM is a general corpus with an ambition to represent the whole language, used by the Polish Deaf. Unlike the corpora of phonic languages, which are collections of existing texts, the material of the KPJM was generated purposefully by recording and annotating an extensive set of videos. The paper shows that the sign language corpus should be viewed as analogous to spoken language corpora rather than to written language corpora. The KPJM can be perceived as a model of Polish Sign Language.

    This paper is an attempt at drawing attention to the role played by remarkable authors of the interwar period in creating the national language. It discusses selected statements of artists such as J. Tuwim, T. Boy-Żeleński, J. Przyboś, S. Żeromski, B. Jasieński, J. Kurek, and T. Peiper, for whom language is not only a literary material but also an object of studies and refl ection expressed directly, in separate quasi-linguistic texts. This served the purpose of exhibiting the methods of giving consideration to linguistic issues by non-linguists.

    At present, soldiers who want to serve abroad have to achieve a specific level of language proficiency both in its general and professional variety. To prove their competences, they have to take examinations compatible with STANAG 6001 standards. The purpose of this article is to present the impact of formal assessment on soldiers’ professional development in Polish military schools and the factors which are crucial to soldiers’ successful language learning.

    Artykuł wpisuje się w krąg badań glottodydaktycznych z zakresu dydaktyki nauczania języka polskiego jako obcego w odmianie akademickiej ogólnej oraz lingwistycznych w obszarze stylistyki języka polskiego i genologii. Porusza zagadnienie kształcenia językowego studentów z Ukrainy podejmujących studia w Polsce. Autorka analizuje specyfikę rozwoju kompetencji w zakresie rozumienia i tworzenia tekstów reprezentujących gatunki naukowo-dydaktyczne w perspektywie porównawczej polsko-ukraińskiej z uwzględnieniem zjawiska interkomprehensji i interferencji językowej. Na podstawie analizy praktyk edukacyjnych w Polsce i na Ukrainie, a także tekstów prac dyplomowych studentów z Ukrainy, opierając się na własnym doświadczeniu pracy dydaktycznej, autorka przedstawia propozycję katalogu gatunków akademickich oraz błędów w redakcji tekstów naukowo-dydaktycznych typowych dla osób słowiańskojęzycznych.
    The paper analyses the issue of academic writing in Polish. The author analyses the specific characteristics of the development of competences in the field of understanding and creating texts representing scientific and didactic genres from the Polish-Ukrainian comparative perspective, taking into account the phenomenon of intercomprehension and linguistic interference. Based on the analysis of educational practices in Poland and Ukraine, as well as the texts of the diploma theses of students from Ukraine, based on her own experience in teaching, the author presents a catalogue of academic genres and frequent errors in academic writing made by Ukrainian students.

    The article concentrates on achievements of the younger generation of emigrants in the mother tongue based on an analysis of General Certifi¬cate of Secondary Education (Polish). At its beginning, the author lays out some of the issues concerned with bilingual glottodidactics and Polish education abroad (the latter is presented in an exolingual context; here: based on England). In the further course, a reference is made to English educational system with a particular stress put on Key Stage 4 examinations, that is General Certificate of Secondary Educa-tion (here: in Polish). The data gathered come from one of the AQA centres in which the author of the present text worked.
