OLD ANGLO-SAXON AND OLD NORSE GENEALOGIES
Opis:
The paper acquaints Polish readers with how Snorri Sturluson used the Trojan myth in his Edda; developing his version of it in the Prologue and using it as a frame story of Gylfaginning. The paper shows the medieval reception of the Trojan myth (Dictys, Dares), the background of Trojan myth inIceland(Trojumanna saga, Bretta sogur), and medieval strategies of using theTroymyth to demonstrate ancient origins of own nations, which, in emulation of the Romans was done by the Franks and the Britons. Snorri employs this myth for the sake of Scandinavians, developing euhemeristic story about the Æsir showing them as clever people fromTroy. To him it was rather a tool to underline the ancient descent of Scandinavian elites, a trick giving him the reason to write a long text about Old Norse paganism in Christian setting. For the author of the paper Snorri is undoubtedly the author of the Prologue. Some Frankish influence is suspected to be among the sources for his tale ofTroy.

Opis:
The Genealogies in the Book of Genesis present a challenge not only for common readers of the Holy Scripture but also for biblical scholars. For the former ones, their monotony slows down or even interrupts the flow of narration; for the latter ones, the genealogies’ monotonous rhythm can be a code to a theological enigma hidden in the holy text. One of the riddles in the genealogies of the Book of Genesis seems to be the shortening of human longevity between Gen 5 and Gen 11. Instead of looking for the causes of this process in human sinfulness or in human drifting apart from the garden of Eden, the author perceives this change as a result of God’s decision expressed in Gen 6:3.

Opis:
Most readers of Scripture do not normally consider genealogies among its more exciting parts. Their virtual dismissal by most lay readers contrasts sharply with biblical scholar's obsession with them. For the latter, genealogy may be more fascinating than narrative, because of the historical curiosity that most biblical scholars bring to the text. Of the opening eleven chapters of Genesis, two are exclusively dedicated to genealogical concerns - chapter 5 and chapter 10. Chapter 5 traces the genealogical lineage from Adam to Noah. Chapter 10 focuses on the three sons of Noah and their respective descendants, and the place where each of them settled. Similarly to the narrative account, the two lists serve as evidence of God's blessing upon these antediluvian patriarchs and upon the genealogical line that leads down to Abraham. Such a blessing is manifested in chronological succession (ch. 5) and territorial expansion (ch. 10).

Little is known about the genealogy and the biography of Eleonora Ziemięcka née Gagatkiewicz. Poland’s fi rst female philosopher (1819–1869). This article, the fruit of extensive archival research, now supplies the missing data. It not only fi xes her birth date – hitherto unknown – but also gives us an insight into the circumstances and reasons of her being brought up away from her parents. It has also been possible to collect a good deal of information about her relations, especially the Gagatkiewicz family (she was the granddaughter of Walenty Gagatkiewicz, the most distinguished physician of late 18th century Warsaw), and the family connections and the profi le of her husband, the portrait painter Antoni Ziemięcki.

Opis:
Group identities are often built on genealogies. Buryat culture appears to conform to this general rule. Elaborate Buryat historical genealogies have been written and preserved. Today, scholars regard them as a key source of insight into the structure and character of Buryat society. Most scholars treat Buryat genealogies exclusively as descriptions of kinship systems. In keeping with a rich anthropological literature, Buryat culture appears to fit into the paradigm of kinship as the “irreducible principle,” “atom” or an “elementary structure,” which, as the complexity of society grew, ceased to be the central organizational principle in favor of the state, politics, economy, etc. However, this interpretation occludes the meaning of Buryat genealogies as carriers of historical memory and understanding of the world. By insisting on treating it in ethnographic categories, the academic view of Buryat culture reduces the Buryat society to the level of a primordial one. In this article, I will use the findings of my fieldwork to briefly introduce the historical context of the Buryat genealogies in the broadly defined pre-Soviet, Soviet and post-Soviet periods. I am interested in the motives of those who created these genealogies, and the place these documents occupy in the contemporary Buryat society and culture. I will also note the coincidence of a revival of interest among Buryats in their genealogies in the 1970s and 1980s with the rise of Soviet modernization’s power to suppress local cultures.

This paper will focus on several sources from Scandinavia and the Balkans, and compare the types of genealogies portrayed in them – descent from gods, descent from another kind of supernatural being, descent from a legendary hero. The paper will examine the types of genealogies and the purpose they serve; how and why they were commissioned? Is there a difference in the establishment of the image of the ruler if the latter has descended from gods, legendary heroes, or a specific clan or dynasty? Does Christianity change the tradition of writing genealogies and the stories they retell? Are personal qualities enough to provide legitimate claims?

Opis:
A thorough analysis of the genealogies in Gen 4:17–5:32 has shown that they are the result of a highly creative (hypertextual) and at the same time strictly sequential reworking of an older text of Deut 2:9–23. This means that the theories postulating the genealogies in Gen 4:17–5:32 as having come from various hypothetical sources of the Pentateuch (J, P, etc.) are no longer necessary to explain their origin and function. Similarly, detailed analysis of the genealogies presented in Luke 3:23–38 and Matt 1:1–17 has demonstrated that the Matthean genealogy is the effect of a deliberate reworking of the earlier genealogy composed by Luke. That, in turn, means that the theory of the “Q source,” intended to serve as an explanation of the origin of the Matthean–Lucan materials that had not come from the Gospel of Mark, is also exegetically superfluous.
