This article explores the political implications, both at the time and for present-day readers, of the way La Princesse de Clèves calls into question gender norms/roles. Analyzing plots and characters in Lafayette’s text and readers/critics’ reactions in various contexts, it foregrounds the unsettling potential of a text that paradoxically moved from the position of hapax-cum- media-sensation to that of a paradigm of the early-modern novel. By focusing on its continued efficacy in disturbing heteronormative stereotypes, it sheds light on the way literature from before the modern era can contribute to identifying and analyzing queerness and gender dissidence in past historical contexts.

The empirical research reported in this article is based on the Moral Foundations Theory proposed by J. Haidt. Objectives. The author examines the impact of moral foundations arguments on early adolescents’ moral judgments regarding violating moral rules and explores gender-related differences between moral foundations preferences. Method. The effect of moral foundations arguments was measured by a newly developed meta-ethical position test (MEPT). The MEPT consists of a pretest questionnaire, treatment by moral foundations arguments, and a posttest questionnaire. The sample contained 178 early adolescents from the Czech Republic (84 females and 94 males). The influence of the moral foundations arguments was analyzed by comparing the pretest with the posttest. Results. 91% of teenagers changed their moral judgment due to confrontations with the moral foundations arguments. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test found that the moral foundations arguments were significantly relevant, since the P-value was lower than 0.001. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed the importance of the gender aspect: P-value care equals 0.01 and liberty 0.01. Girls have a preference for care foundation (21% more than boys), while boys tended to liberty (27 % more than girls). It seems that moral foundations arguments strongly change early adolescents’ moral judgments and can be practically applied as a valuable platform for early adolescents’ moral development.

The article is an evaluation of the contribution of women to the development of the “Onomastica” journal in the years 1955–2016. The author presents the “feminised” history of the journal as an equally valid alternative to the “typical” masculinised timeline. The theoretical context here is based on M. Foucault’s concept of power-knowledge and the idea of herstory in science. The article shows general numerical tendencies regarding women’s contributions to the article throughout 60 years of its existence and describes differences and discrepancies. The author outlines how during the first 30 years of the existence of the journal (1955–1985), there were not many female contributors, but their number grew between 1985 and 2016. The author argues that the reason for such changes is the emancipation of female scholars in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and structural changes in the academic life in Poland after the Second World War. She highlights the work of scholars whose influence on the journal has been the most significant since the establishment of the journal, such as M. Karpluk, M. Malec or H. Popowska-Taborska.

This paper is an exploratory study that uses Bourdieu’s ‘Field of Power’ theory to contextualize and place the expressed and hidden centers of power within the domestic violence shelter system, as a function of direct feedback from agents within that system. Data for the study was collected from Reddit, a popular ‘chat-room’ style forum for a variety of social and technical issues. Direct feedback about domestic violence shelter experiences from all participants in that ecosystem was coded based on agent/power dynamics. Results from the study indicate that certain actors within the domestic violence shelter system, namely abusers represent a hidden center of power.

Celem niniejszego tekstu była analiza wizerunku męskości przedstawionego w podręcznikach języka polskiego dla szkół gimnazjalnych. Przeprowadzona została krytyczna analiza dyskursu podręczników, a następnie interpretacja uzyskanych wyników przy pomocy narzędzi teorii postkolonialnej. W rezultacie określone zostały znaczenie oraz funkcja kreowanych w analizowanym materiale męskich tożsamości, zawarte w nich obszary wykluczeń oraz znaczenie tych tożsamości w szerszym kontekście społecznym oraz kulturowym.
The aim of this paper was to analyze the representations of masculinity in the Polish literature textbooks for upper-secondary schools. A critical discourse analysis was conducted and, subsequently, the findings were interpreted in the light of the postcolonial theory. Consequently, meanings and functions of male identities in the textbooks and spaces of exclusion in the representations of masculinity were specified. Their meaning in broad socio-cultural context was presented.

This paper discusses the effects of robot design (machine- like, humanoid, android) and users’ gender on the intention to work with social robots in the near future. For that purpose, the theoretical framework afforded by the theory of planned behavior (TPB) is used. Results showed effects for robot design and users’ gender. As the robot got more human-like the lower the intention to work with it. Female participants showed lower intention to work with social robots. These effects are mediated by the variables of the TPB. Perceived behavioral control and subjective norm are the main predictors of the intention to work with social robots in the near future.

Sarah Gubbins and Joey Soloway’s recent series “I love Dick” – an adaptation of a cult feminist novel by Chris Kraus – demonstrates a rare, visceral grasp of the deep roots of gender oppression. The response to this oppression is intersectional, anti-racist, gender-queer empowerment and feminist desire. It’s inspiring and must be defended from (misunderstanding vis-à-vis) the perspective of the heteronormative gaze, still dominant together with the masculinist and racist gaze in the maturing 21st century. In its deviations from the novel, the screen adaptation activates intersectional connections that remain underdeveloped in the original. If the novel mines sexual oppression and gives voice to feminist desire in its raw and terrific power, I read the series as excavating sexual oppression at the intersection of sex, gender, race and class, and giving voice to (gender-)queer desire in all its fantastic force.

Problematyka praw kobiet jest stale poruszanym zagadnieniem w kwestii publicznej. Początki walki o równość płci sięgają XVIII wieku, jednak kobiety wciąż padają ofiarami dyskryminacyjnych praktyk. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zwięzłe przedstawienie podstawowych nurtów feminizmu jako ruchu walczącego o równouprawnienie płci oraz jaki wpływ na sytuację prawną kobiet miała zrodzona z niego feministyczna jurysprudencja. W dalszej części zarysowano mechanizmy antydyskryminacyjne w systemie Rady Europy oraz sposób ochrony kobiet w sferze zatrudnienia. Artykuł wieńczy przedstawienie kilku wyroków Europejskiego Trybunału Praw Człowieka.
The issue of women's rights is continuously debated in the public domain. The beginnings of the fight for gender equality began in the eighteenth century, but women are still subjected to discriminatory practices. The aim of this article is to briefly present the main trends of feminism as a movement fighting for gender equality, and what influence feminist jurisprudence has on the legal situation of women. In the following part of the paper, anti-discrimination mechanisms are presented in the system of the Council of Europe and the way women are protected in the sphere of employment. The article finishes with the presentation of several judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.

Political activity is a type of social activity displayed by citizens. Observations and research indicate that gender can be a factor which conditions its degree and forms. Apart from biological gender, which shapes the societal roles of women and men, additional factors that are supposedly responsible for their activities include elements of the system of beliefs (i.e. acknowledged political values, conviction that political activity has an importance, level of satisfaction with democracy as well as individualism and collectivism understood as an element of individual’s mentality). The impact of those factors on degree of conventional political activities among women and men is the subject of surveys which were conducted in 2004, 2010, and 2014 on a group of 1048 students from Polish universities. The received results show that differences in political activity between surveyed men and women as well as varying determinants in both groups are slowly fading away. The most important predictors of women’s political activity include: conviction of its significance in democracy and (dis)satisfaction with the way it functions.

Acquisition of the theory of mind (TOM) is a very important milestone in the development of preschool children. TOM is especially important for the development of children’s social skills. The goal of the present study was to examine the effects of age, gender and executive functions (EF) on the acquisition of TOM. The sample in this study consisted of 116 preschool children aged 36-72 months (mean age 58.8 months, SD= 9.5 months). In relation to the child’s gender, there were 56 girls (48.3%) and 60 boys (51.7%). The Sally Anne test- a task purporting to measure TOM, was used as a dependant variable and age, gender, and EF measures were used as the predictors. Logistic regression was used as a method to determine the effects of predictors on TOM. The results of this study indicated that success on the TOM test can best be predicted by the inhibitory control, followed by verbal fluency and child’s age. The gender of the child was not associated with TOM acquisition. The overall model explained between 27% and 38% of the variance in the TOM scores. Inhibitory control is the executive function that had the greatest predictive power for the results on the theory of the mind task. The findings of this study can help early interventionists in the modification of existing preschool curricula, so that they include more activities that would foster the development of the theory of mind in preschool children. Future studies should aim to find a better model of theory of mind predictors by examining the effects of other executive function constructs, such as working memory.

This paper examines the Chechen Black Widows and how they carry symbolic terrorist attacks against Russian targets – the authors’ newly created concept of feminevil. By and large, feminevil is a growing phenomenon of girl-militancy in human violence. The theory used in this paper is Symbolic Convergence Theory (SCT). Developed by Bormann (1972), SCT posits that a group can unite to form a collective culture so as to achieve ambitious objectives. Whether it is a word, phrase, narrative, or physical symbol, each tenet – (a) fantasy theme, (b) symbolic cue, (c) fantasy type, and (d) saga – merges with all the others to recognize anything that helps generate, increase, and sustain a rhetorical society’s awareness.

Artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie o znaczenie społecznego przywiązania dla funkcjonowania mechanizmów regulacji emocji wstydu oraz poczucia winy u młodych dorosłych. W badaniach uzyskano rozbieżności w zakresie regulacji emocjonalnej dla kobiet i mężczyzn o podobnych wynikach na wymiarach przywiązania. W przypadku mężczyzn zaobserwowano ujemną korelację unikania i poczucia winy oraz dodatnią korelację lęku przywiązaniowego i eksternalizacji winy. U kobiet zanotowano dodatni związek unikania ze wstydem oraz dodatni związek lęku przywiązaniowego ze wstydem i poczuciem winy.
The article is an attempt to answer the question about the meaning that social attachment has on the functioning of shame regulation mechanisms and the feeling of guilt within the young adults. In research there were considerable discrepancies in the range of emotional regulations between men and women who achieved the same results on the basis of their level of attachment. There was a negative correlation between avoidance and the feeling of guilt, along with a positive correlation between the fear of attachment and the externalization of shame among the male group. Whereas, among the females, both of the mentioned correlations were positive.

Male politicians are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that women have great power. Girls account for 50% of the population of school students. Women seem to be much better at handling the financial crisis than men. The recession primarily aftected the masculine part of business – widespread layoffs hit typically male industries, such as cars, tobacco, financial services. In the U.S., men account for 80% of people who lost jobs as the result of the recent crisis. Moreover, it is women that make most decisions relating to household expenses. They are also more inclined to save up for future. They typically spend money on things like education, healthcare, food and cosmetics. They also invest in their children’s future. At present, women have about $10.5 trillion at their disposal, while men have approximately $23.4 trillion. However, this disproportion is still getting smaller. The past decade saw the distance between these two worlds constantly diminish. Women control $12 trillion out of $18.4 trillion spent by consumers every year. Moreover, the increasing number of working women – as Michael J. Silverstein points – means that their income is increasing.

The aim of the paper is to discuss Polish sex positivity movement and its relationship to queer theory. This is done on the basis of a case study, i.e. the analysis of the book Warsztaty intymnosci [The Workshops of Intimacy] by Agnieszka Szezynska. The author of the article presents selected aspects of this publication, focusing on the typical features of sex positivity approach (in so doing, she refers to other Polish and English sources which represent or study this topic). Apart from that, the scholar shows conceptual overlaps between Szezynska’s perspective and queer theory. In conclusion, the author discusses the functioning and possible outcomes of this alliance in the Polish context.
